Was just looking at some Mavs stats before the game tonight. Derrick Lively is kinda awesome, isn’t he? I thought he was just a rim runner like young Mitch but he’s more than doubled his assists this year (4.9 per 100). He also has a career net rating of plus 27, and he’s still 20 years old.

It’s weird to think that as bad as Mikal has been, the Knicks (on the court) would be worse if they had kept Donte and he was having the season he is having. A sub .500 TS% with the highest turnover rate of his career. Yikes.

As bad as Bridges has been, he’s still playing the most minutes in his career at 38.1 a game. Maybe let him catch his breath here and there?

“Cleaning the Glass had them as the top ranked unit in the league (and thus the top offense of all time at the moment) following the win in Denver.”

    Well then.

Great video. I noticed that on all of those defensive possessions, a player was being selectively “ignored” at the 3pt line…Westbrook, Watson, Braun…? Seems that it didn’t work nearly as well vs. Utah.

It’s amazing the data that is available now.

Twenty years ago you were cutting edge if you knew that a three pointer was worth 50% more than a two pointer

pt I think the advantage is it aggregates a lot of data and highlights that were previously dispersed throughout various sites like CTG, the NBA stats page, BRef, etc.

Danny Dimes to Minnesota. I would be amused if they’re able to resurrect his career the way they have with Darnold.

“Danny Dimes to Minnesota. I would be amused if they’re able to resurrect his career the way they have with Darnold.”

Practice squad, not the main team.

I was a little leery of using OG at the 4, but it looks like it is his natural position.

I don’t think OG can be pigeonholed into a “natural position,” in fact, his “positionlessness” is what makes him so valuable. That was pretty clear in watching Benjy’s film breakdown. There are obviously 2 positions where he does not fit as well on offense, the 1 and 5, and he’s a bit clunky at the 2, but he’s fine as either a 3 or 4 with forays into the 2-5 on O and the 1, 2, and 5 on D.

For example, if KAT plays the 4 next to a rim protecting big e.g. Mitch, OG’s “natural position” becomes the 3 and he’s perfectly suited to play there.

As I mentioned yesterday, I don’t think we can gauge this team until we play more games vs. the elite teams, particularly the Celts, Cavs and Thunder.

I think going big against the Cavs should be effective….put Mitch (or Precious) on Allen and KAT on Mobley, or vice versa. That would free up OG to roam, and now you can focus on figuring out a way to hide Brunson with either Hart or Bridges on the floor. I just don’t like the KAT+OG vs. Allen+Mobley matchup because OG sort of has to lock in more.

OTOH I like the KAT+OG pairing better vs. the Celts because they don’t have the size at the 4. KAT can focus on KP/Horford and then you can sort of mix and match the other 4 guys…or you can try something radical like putting Brunson on KP when he’s spotting up 25 feet out and switching when he comes inside. It’s just hard to figure out how to hide Brunson vs. Jrue and White, or to keep him out of switches to even worse mismatches. I hope Thibs can come up with something better than “hope they are cold from 3.”

One matchup I am particularly curious about is our game vs the Magic next week. I’ve always been a lot higher on them than most. Last year they were the team I most wanted to avoid in the playoffs. This year they have not missed a beat with Banchero out.

I think they are very much our equal in the East, albeit in a completely opposite manner. They score 106 ppg and give up 102. It’s like they play in a different league.

This year they have not missed a beat with Banchero out.

Franz Wagner is doing an uncanny Paolo Banchero impression

I see the Magic as Rockets East. This kind of hyper-athletic great defensive team with questionable shooting may be our worst matchup. Our offense has been great, but it seems to suffer against the best defenses. Given that only 3 of our games have been against top 10 defenses, our gaudy Ortg might be a little inflated. It seems like our offense doesn’t hold up against great D, while our defense is highly vulnerable to shitty offenses.

Our window really kinda hinges on sneaking in deep runs before teams like these catch up with their solid foundations of young talent. HOU already seems to have gotten there, and ORL with a healthy Banchero looks like they may have as well. Unless our defense improves to at least middle of the pack, we are probably capped at the 4th seed in the East.

Danny Dimes to Minnesota. I would be amused if they’re able to resurrect his career the way they have with Darnold.

The Vikings have the best OT combo in the league (pass blocking win rate) and the 9th best overall OL. A fine place to recover from his PTSD from being clubbed like a baby seal for years.

Going to a place like LV to be able to play and continue the S&M made zero sense.

I joined Bluesky last week just so I could follow a handful of people that are not posting on X anymore. I’m already getting scantily dressed women following me and asking me to hit them up. It’s less than a week and it’s the same nonsense, but in lower volume for now and with fewer sources of good information.

I find that if I block anyone that’s abusive, don’t accept retweets from anyone that overdoes it with topics I’m not interested in, always stay on Following and not For You, my X timeline is much improved. It contains my primary interests and a balanced view of politics and economics so I can keep track of what all sides are thinking and why. I don’t need to live in a bubble. I’m soft, but not that soft. 😉

Also on /r/timberwolves, they aren’t so thrilled with our old buddy Randle: https://www.reddit.com/r/timberwolves/comments/1h14gvo/the_timberwolves_are_11_points_per_100_worse/

Somehow swapping Randle for KAT has wrecked their defense even more than swapping iHart+Randle for KAT wrecked ours.

Anyone miss anything about Randle at all? I don’t. He’s worse than Kat in every aspect of offense basically, and he seems to be killing their defense even playing next to the perennial DPOY…

That Reddit thread is a trip.

Deep inside I still identify as a fan of a laughingstock NBA franchise. I know where they are.

One area where I remain a staunch Berrite is quarterbacks. Every time I have turned on a Giants game the past few years Daniel Jones was getting sacked. Nobody can play the position without protection and all the best guys generally have great protection

My X feed has changed so much in the past three months. So much strange alt right stuff bubbling out of nowhere. Makes me want to leave but it’s still fun for Knicks stuff.

Makes me want to leave but it’s still fun for Knicks stuff.

Macri, Edwards, Katz, Popper, Bondy, Vorkunov, Zach, Tommy Beer, Ben Stiller, Jason Concepcion, and a whole bunch of other Knicks/NBA people have already started BlueSky-ing. The NY Basketball account is there, though for the moment it still seems to be posting game stuff live on Twitter and then republishing content overnight after games. The migration of Sports Twitter has really picked up in the last couple of weeks, to the point where I’ve stopped going to Twitter at all except to post links to my stuff. (And even that seems somewhat pointless, since the algorithm is now designed to suppress links unless you’re a paid subscriber.)

    Here’s Vorkunov’s NBA starter pack:

    Berrite?

daniel jones should have run the ball, even more, while he was here…

what a mess, for so so long…gotta be ownership, right?

we’ve had a run of not so great gm’s…i still think if they had handled the eli situation better, they could have actually rebuilt the team…

didn’t matter how many times he got run over back there, somehow he could still play, well enough for a rebuild 🙂

suck, rebuild your lines, acquire merc skill positions, draft some lotto skill positions in later rounds, strenghten your lines…

and run the ball more…do that and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll make it past the first round occasionally…

do whatever it is the g-men are currently doing, and more of the same: stuck in suck…high skill position drafts…dumb asses…

Geo, the only constant is John Mara, and the whole nepotistic infrastructure he has maintained since taking over from his dad. I thought going outside the usual circle of people to hire Schoen and Daboll was a huge step in the right direction. Now I fear that their failure will only encourage Mara to retreat to the same handful of people he already knows.

nepotism is definitely a fatal flaw to just about any system…

have you been able to set the simpsons’ thing to either your ringtone, or maybe voicemail answering message yet?

edit: except for chores around the house – very suitable use of nepotism in that regard…

Tyler Kolek has been added to Knicks injury report with an “illness” and is questionable. The Mavs have a few players listed with “illness.”

Berri wrote about football. Basic gist was that quarterbacks are far more context dependent than generally understood.

And he created a metric to demonstrate that of course.

Now I fear that their failure will only encourage Mara to retreat to the same handful of people he already knows.

    At least he knows Belichick.

Thank you for the clarification, Owen. Didn’t quite understand the context of your reference.

The Raiders and Giants are locked in a fierce tank battle for the #2 and #3 picks, which is where the only two elite QBs will be selected. Both teams have upped the ante as the Giants have jettisoned Danny Dimes and the Raiders will be without Gardner Minshew for the rest of the season.

This is normally the time of year when the Raiders fire their coach in-season and sabotage their tank when the team rallies behind the new guy with a pointless 3-1 streak to end the season, leading to the interim coach getting re-hired for the following season, then going 2-9 and getting fired in-season, thus extending the beautiful cycle of futility.

Mark Davis is still rocking that haircut.
