Knicks acquire No. 2 pick in G League draft: Why does it matter?

  • 75 replies on “Knicks Morning News (2024.10.27)”

Watched Ice Cube again this morning and I’ve half-jokingly concluded that he should get a World Series ring if the Dodgers win. There was a nonzero impact of him looking right at the Yankees dugout and singing “bow down to a team that’s greater than you.” I had a friend text me “I want to undo all my Yankees bets for tonight after watching Ice Cube”! This could usher in a new era of baseball where Pregame Rapper becomes as important as Starting Pitcher.

“It’s not really an iso if you just blow by your guy in a couple dribbles” is the 2024-25 version of “The 11th pick in the draft isn’t really a lottery pick.”

I don’t really even follow baseball, but I hate the f’n Dodgers and their fans so much, and it’s going to be unbearable when they beat both NY teams to win the World Series.

I really feel for CDiggy. Baseball is where he’s supposed to get one over on his SoCal friends & family. Alas our lineup is a dull knife after the top 4 thanks to Brian Cashman, while the Dodgers are carrying an AK47 with no easy outs like a large market team is supposed to.

The Knicks are just gonna have to make it up to him.

I spun Jealous One’s Envy on the record player this morning. It is my only Fat Joe album, and it is still a banger. He’s an inspired choice for game 3. Maybe KRS-One is present for A Bronx Tale?

I’m counting on him more than Clarke Schmidt to save the series. (Someone said it yesterday but not holding Rodon back to pitch in YS was dumb.)

In box score meandering, Randle looked like he had a decent game last night, Donte continues to struggle with his shot (not a single comment on my Donte-Deuce comparison yesterday after two games?!), and Grimes gets 5 minutes of garbage time and two fouls to show for it.

Raven, so far it’s looking like a good trade for both teams. Randle has been quintessential good Randle and Towns dominated a pretty good C in Myles Turner. Both are clearly helping their teams and seem to be great fits. I’ll stick with my main premises from yesterday, which is that Towns and Randle are similarly good and similarly flawed, just in different ways, and that we won’t really know how this trade worked out until deep into the playoffs, especially given that Randle’s contract situation is uncertain.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes some time for Donte to come around. I can imagine that the trade totally blindsided him and that he’s putting on a good face but ultimately struggling to deal with it. But he’ll come around.

Grimes and Deuce are a good contrast, in that Grimes looked promising as a rookie and sophomore but then stagnated, while Deuce looked like a train wreck offensively but kept developing. I don’t know whether Deuce ever gets to the level that Donte was at last year, but I wouldn’t bet against him. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Grimes has some sort of resurgence…but it really wasn’t worth waiting around for it. I wonder if the same will happen with Huk vs. Sims…

It’s been a weird opening to the Knicks season…3 days between games, two blowouts in opposite directions against conference rivals…and another conference rival game coming up. I think that helps us in that we are really trying to develop chemistry.

not a single comment on my Donte-Deuce comparison yesterday after two games?

I had said that Donte was our most expendable player on the best contract – and he was expendable not only because Mikal is a 20% upgrade, but because the replacement backup was 80% of him. So it made sense to trade him, and Deuce is who he showed us to be. I still think he’s only 80% of Donte, but that’s damn good for a backup making $3 mil a year. Good management by the Knicks… With the usual caveat that I’m still bummed we didn’t get to see that team play.

With Mitch coming back eventually, mostly we could use a big wing. Precious could be good enough, maybe? We have to hope so until we have a chance to add some depth next off-season.

Kind of amazing to have 2 and maybe 3 legit point guards. Cam is better than Elfrid Payton and he’s our backup.

Deuce on this team may better than 100 % of Donte given his efficiency and usage. Donte as insurance for an injury to one of our top three scoring options is the rub between those two. The size helps. But Deuce is a little blunderbuss and he’s proving Thibs faith in him. Taking the extra height from Donte and reassigning it to grow Randle into KAT makes all the sense.

I was busy betting on horses and preparing for the Breeder’s Cup races this weekend most of yesterday. I didn’t get a chance to follow up on yesterday’s thread. I’m glad I didn’t. 😉

I just can’t agree with anyone thinks Randle is either better and/or a better fit in NY than Towns or that Bridges and Mikal are close either. To me, it’s feel more like disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing and discussion than anything else.

On offense Towns and Randle are completely different players playing different positions. So it’s hard to value individual skills. But overall they do a similar amount of scoring. The thing is, Towns does his WAY more efficiently. He’s also not a ball stopper like Randle and he’s a huge space provider where Randle is often a space reducer.

IMO Towns is a natural C. He’s going to be more impactful for us most nights playing C than he was at PF next to Gobert. You can already see it in his rebounding like I predicted, but he’ll also probably block a few extra shots and get to the rim more without a negative space guy like Gobert at C. He’s going to have a lot more space too.

The ball is going to move better and that extra space is also going to help Bridges, OG and Hart with their drives and cuts. When you have a guy like Brunson, that extra space is HUGE plus.

We all agree, Towns is not a plus defender, but neither was Randle. Net basis, imo we have better perimeter defense with Mikal, OG and Hart than we had with DDV and Randle starting but weaker rim protection than with I-Hart or Mitch. It’s probably pretty close to a wash on defense. But Mitch is in the background if certain matchups become problematical.

Random stat from last night – Grizzlies’ bench outscored the starters 66-58, including 18 points from some guy named Jay Huff.

totally jealous that memphis pulled him out of thin air. he looks like a legit rotation stretch 5.

“Why should we trust fan highlight reels to be representative samples? That’s an insane assumption. Please show some actual evidence.

Here, KAT takes 100% of his shots out of iso/post:
    Towns isolation highlight reel”

KAT’s post-up highlight reel that you posted is 4:28 long and he played 62 games last year.

This Randle post-up highlight reel is 20:08 long…and he played only 46 games.

(Is the Towns sample incomplete? I’m certainly open to seeing more evidence!)

It shouldn’t be all that surprising that there are nearly 5X more clips, since KAT was assisted on 64% of his 5.5 made 2’s per game, while Randle was assisted on only 42% of his 6.9 2PA per game.

If you project 47 games worth of Randle’s stats out to 62 games, Randle would have had 430 made 2’s to KAT’s 343 made 2’s. Multiplying them by their unassisted percentage, Randle would have had 252 unassisted 2’s, while KAT had 123 unassisted 2’s. And despite the more difficult types of iso’s that Randle took compared to KAT that should be clear to anyone who watches both videos above, their 2pt% was .011 apart. The difference in their TS% was mostly due to 3pt% and FG%, where KAT is clearly superior.

KAT is not in Randle’s league as an iso player. It’s just not his game, never was. Randle’s dominance in the iso game is the primary reason he is a 2X all-NBA player. KAT has never been assisted on less than 50% of his shots and is 60% for his career, Randle has been assisted on 42% or less of his shots every year he has been with the Knicks, including only 38% in 2022-23. That’s getting toward Carmelo Anthony territory.

If folks want to ignore these stark differences in both volume and iso type to conclude that KAT is better in iso than Randle, have at it! I’m not buying it.

The good news is, KAT will never have to carry the offensive burden that Randle had here, at least so long as Brunson stays healthy.

Unfortunately, you are so correct, my guy. It’s going to be a insufferable rest of fall if the Dodgers beat both NY teams: I’ll have to take the L for the Mets too.

This is how cruel Friday night was: my wife and I were watching Game 1. Despite being part of the Greek chorus of LA fans, she doesn’t follow sports too closely. So imagine being completely despondent while having to explain WHY Freddie Freeman’s grand slam win the game along with what a “walk-off home run” is.
Add to that the trolling texts coming thru my phone at the same time. Yeah…

from some guy named Jay Huff.

I have a friend who is a grizzlies fan so I took a look at the box score for their first game and saw a guy named j. Huff had a nice game. I didn’t know who that was so I clicked to his player page and got a laugh seeing J Huff was Jay Huff

Strat, I agree with the premise that there’s an excellent chance that KAT is a better fit with this team than Randle was. There’s also an excellent chance that Randle is a better fit with the Wolves than KAT was. Where we part ways is the notion that KAT is so much better as a player than Randle that it’s not even close. I think it’s actually very close. Both players have tremendous gifts and glaring flaws.

I think Randle has consistently been given short shrift here because folks don’t like the optics of his game, similar to Melo and at times Ewing. In 2022-23, Brunson and Randle were neck and neck as the team’s best player until Randle hurt his ankle late in the season and never really recovered. In 2023-24, they were again neck and neck when Randle blew out his shoulder after being named an all-star and well on his way to another all-NBA season. I would have liked to have seen him get one chance at playing with this squad, and that is even more true now that he has shown that his shoulder and ankle look completely recovered. So it will take a while before I am convinced that this wasn’t just a lateral move at best, especially when Donte is part of the calculus. But I promise you, I am keeping an open mind and rooting hard for KAT. He’s been through a lot in his personal life, and it would be a great feel-good story if he makes the big difference that we all hope he makes.

I just can’t agree with anyone thinks Randle is either better and/or a better fit in NY than Towns or that Bridges and Mikal are close either. To me, it’s feel more like disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing and discussion than anything else.

Randle was 12-2 with the good version of this team and we had like a 20 point MOV. So yeah, it’s definitely debatable.

There’s also an excellent chance that Randle is a better fit with the Wolves than KAT was.

i’ll take the under on that. here’s the bet. last year ant, gobert and kat played 1350 minutes together scoring 121.5 per 100 at plus 7.9 per 100. i’ll take the under on both ortg and net rating for randle ant gobert this year, so you only need to win one. winner gets gift shop credit from the virtual pastiche exhibit owen happily attends with his wife during the first 3 1/2 quarters of game 4 of the 2025 ecf.

I didn’t know who that was so I clicked to his player page and got a laugh seeing J Huff was Jay Huff

    Shades of Homer Jay Simpson…

got happy for a moment when i noticed the giants weren’t on the schedule today, thought maybe they had a bye…was gonna count that as a win, for me…

so, looks like the yanks, g-men, and knicks are all playing on monday…okay…

cavs are already 3 – 0, this will be their toughest test this season though…looking forward to it – now that josh hart and mikal bridges are no longer terrible this pre-season/season…

i know i’m giving OG a pass for only scoring 4 points that first game…grading on a curve though…

It’s way to early to mean anything, but one of the areas of concern for me regarding Towns has been his tendency to commit bad TOs. He’s like Randle in that regard. He has a tendency to dribble into traffic and either lose the ball or force a tough pass. I was hoping Thibs and all the space we have might help since keeping TOs down has been an area of focus for the Knicks. So far Towns has zero TOs in the 2 games.

Actually Strat you can make a case that both NY football teams should swallow their pride and pull a Process for at least two seasons. Starting with this season… right now lol.

BTW Hubert, Ice Cube is one of three of my most influential hip hop artists. I began listening to him in junior high, my formative years as a hip hop fan. (It was him, Heavy D and Public Enemy). So it pained me some when he threw his hat in the ring of the whole East Coast/West Coast rivalry of the mid-90s. He didn’t need to.

That said, I just watched Ice Cube’s performance and… yeah I can’t be mad at him. Bet he was grinning on the inside too.

    *sigh*

I’d rather the Jets be good, but having them be this completely inept is pretty funny. James Dolan is a better owner than Woody.

If any team in professional sports should tank, it’s the current Jets.

Not at all, they should trade their draft picks for more over the hill Green Bay WRs

Wow, Ohtani is expected to play in Game 3?!

He’ll probably end up pitching a few innings too. Supermen are cool like that.

Just turned on the Pacers v Sixers game. Pacers were up 5 with a minute left. Halliburton misses a technical free throw(!), then turns it over three straight times. Sixers take a 3 point lead. Then Halliburton throws in a double-teamed off-balance 3 at the buzzer to tie it. Way to keep people guessing, Tyrese.

Eric Gordon is in the new team every year phase of his career…he’ll hit some big shots against us in the playoffs this year…no doubt

KAT is not in Randle’s league as an iso player. It’s just not his game, never was.

Unless you measure success by things like “average amount of points scored in isolation possessions,” in which KAT has a consistent, and often significant, advantage. Other than though, there’s no comparison. Just look at the runtime of those YouTube highlight reels baby!

“Unless you measure success by things like “average amount of points scored in isolation possessions,” in which KAT has a consistent, and often significant, advantage. Other than though, there’s no comparison. Just look at the runtime of those YouTube highlight reels baby!”

Sez the genius who wanted to dump Randle for peanuts at the first opportunity, and called him the most detrimental player in the NBA. You have no credibility left on the topic of Julius Randle. Give it a rest.

Not a good sign for a fully healthy and largely returning Pacers team that they lost to a Philly team missing Embiid and PG13. They better get it together.

The Nets appear to be starting Ben Simmons as a PG-Center hybrid (as the tallest player and primary playmaker) and are bringing Claxton off the bench… might as well try something, I guess.

League pass puts a cover on each game with the best player on each team’s face on it. I don’t recognize the guy in the Nets jersey and can’t even make a guess as to who it may be.

When Eric Gordon was good he was not particularly good and that was legitimately a decade or more ago, it’s fascinating he’s been able to hang on for so long.

Watching TNFH eviscerate Z-Man feels like rubbernecking a horrific accident on the highway. I should look away, but I can’t. I mean, he’s asking for it right? Like its obviously just masochism?

He’s become quite decent over time, but when Bobby Portis is your third-best player, that’s not a good thing.

I’d love to hear TNFH explain his takes on this thread, you know, one that is actually relevant right now? Please read carefully, there are some real doozies there!

BTW Minny already blew up the KAT-Gobert championship core. But sure, hybrid method for the loss!

PS it’s cute that you keep going back to the Bargnani argument that happened 11 years ago and one in which you totally mischaracterize my position. You have been moronically wrong about Randle and about Leon, on a scale that for most folks would be somewhat humbling. But you just keep on being sarcastic, condescending, and cocksure, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.

If I am wrong about Randle vs. Towns, it will be like a drop in the bucket compared to how much of a fool you made of yourself in summer 2022. Really, stop it!

PS Jalen Johnson is good! Not my cup of tea (I think he’s an extremely talented but low-IQ shiny object in the Christian Wood mold, but we’ll see!) in the and not someone I lose sleep about passing up, but he would have been a much better pick than Quentin Grimes.

“Watching TNFH eviscerate Z-Man feels like rubbernecking a horrific accident on the highway. I should look away, but I can’t. I mean, he’s asking for it right? Like its obviously just masochism?”

Nice to see you come out of the woodwork to defend your buddy, just like you did, let me see, was it during the Lamelo Ball vs. Killian Hayes argument?

    virtual pastiche exhibit

I spent the length of a full Knicks basketball game today, plus double overtime, at an Oxi day celebration – it’s where Greeks celebrate their resistance to the Axis invasion and the heroic fight they put up. It was all Greek to me of course but you have to do what you have to do sometimes

I would definitely have been more excited about a virtual pastiche. Although apparently my kids great grandmother was one of the actual women carrying guns and ammunition to the troops through the mountains. Which is pretty cool.

I am glad Sho is ok. He’s the most interesting athlete in sports right now and it would suck if he got hurt.

And I started Titanium Noir. Seems pretty good.

Also, I saw the Lana Del Rey news. Has anyone checked on Jowles?

Behold the pettiness of the man who has encyclopedic knowledge of every take made by every Knickerblogger in the history of the site, and who can reference them any time one of his own bad takes is getting singled out for ridicule. That is retired-guy-who-runs-the-HOA level pettiness. If there was a highlight reel of that pettiness, it would be 20 minutes long.

It’s kind of cool the Nets have Cam Thomas, who wants to shoot more than just about anyone in the NBA and Ben Simmons, who wants to shoot less than anyone in NBA history on the same team. Balances out nicely.

Good lord, I forgot about Jowles and Lana Del Rey. Of course, the guy she married looks like he only has another five or so years before he is entirely devoured from within by skin cancer.

She’s also (arguably?) the most normal-looking woman in pop music. No disrespect, Jowles, that’s kind of a compliment.

JK, it was you who got petty yesterday. Rather than respectfully disagree, you said “One of the dumber arguments I’ve seen you make here.” Before that, the argument was pretty civil. You later invoked your go-to “childish” reference. You needlessly insult posters, particularly me, even though your general takes, including your clever “chrome and leather vs. nuts and bolts” takes (see the linked thread from 2022) turned out to be laughably wrong (if Randle and Brunson aren’t chrome and leather, I don’t know what is.) You have one of the nastiest streaks of any poster here and are among the quickest to resort to petty name-calling. So, as I’ve said many times over the years, go fuck yourself.

You’re wrong about shit as much as anybody else and you act like you’re the definitive fucking authority on everything. And you’re so petty you still have Killian Hayes takes bookmarked years later to prove just how much smarter you are than everybody else.

It’s pretty fun watching this site dunk on your soft brained YouTube take and seeing your panties get all in a twist over it. This is the kind of entertainment I come to this site for. It’s really fun when a blowhard gets some well deserved comeuppance.

Now go check your Rolodex again and tell me about a take I made in 2019 that hasn’t panned out.

“You’re wrong about shit as much as anybody else and you act like you’re the definitive fucking authority on everything.”

Nah, just on little things like “Is Julius Randle good?” or “Does Leon have a plan?”

“It’s pretty fun watching this site dunk on your soft brained YouTube take and seeing your panties get all in a twist over it.”

Whatever, I was dunked on for defending Randle and Leon…how did that turn out?

“It’s really fun when a blowhard gets some well deserved comeuppance.”

Who is more deserving of comeuppance than you? You’ve been literally choking on crow for the last 2 years!

“Now go check your Rolodex again and tell me about a take I made in 2019 that hasn’t panned out.”

Believe me, I don’t have to go back that far. You’ve been wrong about pretty much everything important since then. Must feel liberating to puff out your chest and hurl insults about this relatively minor quibble now!

Also, are you proud that you brought up my personal life and employment status in making your argument? Ageism much?

It’s genuinely pathetic that you’re a retired principal and this is how you conduct yourself online. If that’s ageism I don’t care

I’m absolutely fucking done with friends wanting to know if I’ve seen the Substance.

The ironic thing is that this argument will never be resolved because KAT wouldn’t dare iso as much as Randle does. Good thing he will never need to, it wouldn’t end well.

“It’s genuinely pathetic that you’re a retired principal and this is how you conduct yourself online. If that’s ageism I don’t care”

Just that statement alone is enough to make me not give a shit about what you think.

    well clarence – have you?
    🙂

I remember hearing some buzz about the film…

watching venom last night reminded me what a great time it is to be one of Stan Lee’s: True Believers…

not sure what he meant exactly by the term, but yeah, cool to see how the comic world has become so mainstream…

the end credits hinted at some big bad villian, not sure who exactly it was, will need to google…

I thought venom 2/carnage was a little too grim/dark, so it was nice to see venom 3 keep things a lot lighter…venom just seems better suited to young teens…

next up at the movies: Moana 2…

I did see it Geo. It was an uncomfortable experience for me. I was dosed on a particularly zippy hybrid edible and it’s an extremely gory affair. It kinda reminded me a little of Gaspar Noe’s penchant for making “visceral” mean leaving an imprint on your nervous system. I’m not opposed to that weird Euro thing of making the discomfort (as observed by the perceived intentions of the artist) of the audience being functional, but… yeah… I have seen it. The Apprentice was great. A very strong to great biopic. Strong’s Roy Cohn was incredible. Highly recommend.

Curry injured his ankle, limped to locker room.

Norman Powell is ballin pretty good right now. Always liked him!

    Tyrese Maxey is a problem.

absolutely fucking done with friends wanting to know if I’ve seen the Substance.

You’d have to pay me to see that. Which isn’t too day I assume it’s bad; just so aggressively Not My Thing….

Also, Zubac has been really good. Before tonight he was averaging 22-12-3.5 per 36 and tonight he had 23-17-6 in a nice win over GSW. If they get a healthy Kawhi back, they will not be a fun team to play.

It won best screenplay at Cannes… Anora, on the other hand, was the first American film to win the Palms D’or and it was quite good. Sexy even.

It’s kind of cool the Nets have Cam Thomas

Can Thomas! I have no idea what he looks like, but I know have a guess as to who was in the League Pass cover photo. Thanks!

re: Cam, I have a couple friends who teach in Brooklyn and 11 year olds in BK sincerely think he’s like the best basketball player alive, it’s pretty funny

Just that statement alone is enough to make me not give a shit about what you think.

    thumbs up emoji

whoa, thanks for the warning clarence, yeah i might be okay without that experience for awhile…

not overly squeamish, scary enough though that i’ll probably wait a while, i liked the premise a lot though…

ha, reminds me of my hesitancy to watch nomadland, took me years to finally watch that film, i knew it would hit hard…

well, if you haven’t seen it yet, i can totally recommend The Wild Robot…one of the kids fell asleep, the other liked it though, as did i…

looking forward to watching the new alien movie once it hits free streaming…

If you think Julius Randle is chrome and leather, the entire concept whooshed right on over your head.

There’s never been a movie in my long cinema experience where my opinion deviated so much from the critics’ as The Substance. Terrible movie — long, pedantic, inartful, distrustful of the audience. There was one Metacritic outlier, Dana Stevens, who had the stones to call it like it is. Kudos to her.

The ironic thing is that this argument will never be resolved because KAT wouldn’t dare iso as much as Randle does.

To the contrary, the “argument” — it really isn’t one other than to Z-Man — is completely “resolved.”

Championship aspiration teams don’t want 4s with a 553 TS%, low BBall IQ, and high propensity for turnovers running iso for themselves. That’s a straightforward, mainstream basketball statement that’s easy and straightforward to understand and doesn’t warrant a bunch of pedantic caveats, asterisks, or wait-a-second-thoughs.

If you want to move up in the basketball world, you don’t defend and rationalize Julius Randle’s isos — you rid yourself of them.(*)

The offense didn’t become completely dysfunctional here as a result because of elite offensive rebounding and multiple possessions (i.e. Moneyball). That isn’t a championship formula. OTOH, being top three in ORat, TS%, and eFG% (where the Knicks stand after two games, as hoped for) is.

(*) This has been the case virtually from the moment he got rolling as a Knick. Hallelujah they finally did it.
