Alcaraz? Anyone see it? Straight sets?! Whaaaaat?!
Ouch.
No one actually guards Mitch unless he’s directly under the basket. And teams intentionally provide him with the easiest way to score points in basketball. So 2.2 points per 36 given those particular set of circumstances is actually light years better.
Wow – woke up to the Carlitos news and am crushed. Not like he died but I was really looking forward to watching him.
Jason Tatum’s son is named Deuce. Are we conflicted?
I just read somewhere that some sports gambler had $25,000 to win on him to win just $250. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh at him or cry for him.
I didn’t see any of it, but with an upset like that I’d have to think he wasn’t feeling 100%.
I didn’t see it, either, but commentators are not mentioning any physical ailment. Rather they are “analyzing” Alcaraz’s mental state, looking for any cause of lackadaisical play.
On the other side: “Van de Zandschulp, who contemplated quitting tennis earlier this year, said he was lost for words when it was over. — He defended resolutely, covering incredible amounts of court and producing difficult shots on the stretch and under pressure time and again. Coupled with a winning strategy of rushing the net, where he won 28 of 35 points played, the Dutchman simply outplayed Alcaraz.”
Crazy. Tip of the cap to the underdog. Carlos has many more victories in his future.
I was including not being mentally 100% as part of potentially being less than 100%. These guys are not machines. He’ll be fine.
Or maybe he had some people taking the other side… that’s never happened before in tennis…. https://www.cnbc.com/2016/01/18/tennis-rocked-by-grand-slam-match-fixing-allegations.html
It’s a good thing he’s only 21… this has been a rough few weeks for Carlitos.

😂🤣😂
hey cyber, hmmmmmm, maybe julius’ shoulder is feeling pretty alright now…
The key with sports gamblers is to always laugh at them.
I watched Alcaraz’s practice session the day before and he was dumping volleys into the net left and right… during warmups. Not even coming in on points play, and just missing the approach. He was standing inside the service line and just… missing.
It was kind of odd. He looked like me out there.
And then he showed up to the match and couldn’t win a service point to save his life. Very odd.
Carlitos will be fine. He played too many matches between winning on clay and grass and then losing a final on clay. He always needs a few matches to adjust and his ranking let him have that ability to let him gear up against poorer opponents. This time he played a guy ( who I have seen in person play a blinder before ) deliver a blinder
And Owen, enjoy Flushing Meadows today!
Van de Zandschulp hadn’t beaten a top 100 player since noted clay-hater Chris Eubanks at Madrid this year.
This is a Nadal/Rosol or Djokovic/Istomin level of flopping, except Alcaraz lost in straight sets and never had a remote chance of getting into the match. And this is the US Open, not Shanghai or Paris where the serve basically rips through the court and turns good returners into servebot fodder.
It’s inarguably the worst loss of his career and he had only played one match since the Olympics ended. Fatigue should not be an issue here.
I don’t watch much if any tennis anymore but I remember the excitement and anticipation back in the day whenever Sampras and Agassi were playing each other.

Deuceeeee! 🏀
Another hustlebunny makes good!
Richly rewarded for all the pain he has caused us over the years
Tiafoe- Shelton very fun. Crowd staunchly behind Big Fo which is bugging Shelton it looks like
Yes! Watching in an airport. Folks locked in at the bar.
Shelton hits bombs but his forehand is a little wild I think for a world class talent. Should dial it in and use more spin.
Super impressive when it goes in though.
Yeah, like my son, Shelton always hits like he never wants to see the ball ever again 😉
Even the mighty Secretariat had bad days.
Caitlin Clark must see TV tonight
that’s funny kba…
Yeah Strat….I’m on Clark too this evening…I can’t believe they didn’t put her on the olympic team…generational talent…
Almost to preseason. If you haven’t done Fisher’s A Terrible Splendor and you like tennis it was a great read. Prolly even if you don’t like tennis but like history. Or words.
I wonder what Djoker’s odds are at right now
Does anyone think Caitlin Clark is getting sick of people trying to say Angel Reese should be ROTY yet?
Popyrin’s gotta serve it out on this second chance now, right? Right?
EDIT: Right. Wow. Gotta be something in the water this year.
