however, if the league was able to grant its own wish and produce more 7 game series’, then why don’t they?

Many people operate with the belief that the league does, in fact, extend series regularly (the most egregious example being Kings-Lakers game 6 back in the early 00’s, though I’m more inclined to think that was just a case of basic incompetence).

We do know that they send memos to refs that can influence outcomes. If Miami is up 2-0, for instance, they can tell the officiating crew of game 3 that Bam Adebayo is getting away with too many fouls and they need to clean it up. That’s not a “fix”, per se. It’s just an easy and legitimate way to help produce a desired outcome.

Another trick they’ve been purported to do is send certain crews who have high home-court bias to ref a home game the home team needs to win.

And when they really need to get the job done, they send Scott Foster.

This is your daily reminder that Game 3 tickets are available including fees from $120 plus you can get 5% off with a promo code. If you’re fancy 100 Level tickets available for $194. If anyone else is going I’ll buy you a beer there 👍🏾.

According to Pat Riley a couple of series started yesterday 🙂

Siakam got some help, Kawhi is rusty and Durant is packing to bolt again…

    I love the playoffs

I’m guessing your rivals are AC Milan and Juventus

    You’re right Cyber…

Big difference, there’s respect and the classic “city bragging rights” with AC Milan’s fans, while the real bitter rivalry is with Juventus (sort of Yankees-Red Sox multiplied 100 times).

L2M really is a useless exercise.

Sure fine possibly the jersey tug and Hart bumping into Maxey are marginal fouls if you slow it down frame by frame. But how in the world is the Maxey push-off “marginal contact”? It’s a two hand shove with arm extension that knocks the opposing player back 5 feet, freeing Maxey to get the ball. And when Brunson originally loses the ball (which DDV eventually got), Lowry literally dives into Brunson’s legs — that is a foul in the regular season — and yet that is not called. Even if the ball is loose, you can’t just dive into the other player’s legs. But of course L2M is fine with that.

And in real time, the jersey pull is basically imperceptible – you can’t tell me that that’s more contact than the Maxey pushoff.

(sidenote on DDV getting the ball — that’s a classic 50/50 ball. Brunson and Lowry are on the floor. Philly has two players (Embiid/Maxey) who are the closest to the ball. Maxey has inside position on DDV and Hart is several feet farther from the ball than either Embiid or Maxey. And yet at the time the ball is picked up, both DDV and Hart are the closest ones. It’s not so much that they want the ball more, it’s that their reaction time is much faster.

The whole thing is just dumb unless the purpose is to drive engagement, which it has.

There’s actually a website with ref statistics for calls, and home/away bias against the spread. It’s pretty interesting but I can’t remember the address right now.

Max, I went to the San Siro in 2010 for a group match during Spurs first run in the Champions League. We got reduced to 10 men in the first few minutes and the match turned into a 4-0 route. But in classic Knicks fashion (Spurs are the Knicks of the EPL after all) Gareth Bale mounted a fake comeback on his own with a second half hat trick (including 2 in added time) to make it 4-3 and give us all something to feel good about for our efforts to travel.

In the reverse fixture at North London Bale continued to just obliterate Inter in a 3-1 win fondly remembered for fans singing “taxi for Maicon” after the 3rd goal (Maicon being the overmatched RB who Bale had constantly run by for 90 minutes).

L2M really is a useless exercise.

Correct. And it doesn’t provide the legitimacy it purportedly does. We know there are fouls on lots of plays. No one expects every single foul to be called. Was Maxey fouled? Absolutely. Were the Sixers robbed? Absolutely not. In a million years I wouldn’t expect those calls to be made for us if we were in that position.

    Hubie,
I was there that night too and I remember those two games very well 🙂

    P.S.
Due to family connections I’m a Spurs “sympathizer” since the late ’70s 😉

The entire discussion about fouls is preposterous.

    1. The league made the game more physical after the all star break and is always more physical in the playoffs.

    2. The refs have never wanted to decide the game on a marginal call in the last seconds. It always gets a bit more physical.

    3. If they did start calling every foul down the stretch, everyone that’s whining now about calls that weren’t made would be whining that the game should be decided on the court by the players and not the refs.

One of the reasons I have gone off soccer in the last few years (other than internationals) is the increased whining about refs. VAR technology was supposed to be the fix, but seems to have made it worse as it is just another layer to complain about. As long as the L2M remains toothless (unlike VAR) it seems harmless enough but then what is the point?

As a Roma “sympathizer”/Lazio hater 🙂 I was in Milano fiera in 2010 and there was the game that night in San Siro and I just went straigt to curva nord…I didn’t make a sound , head move or an eye contact for two hours:) 1:1 it ended.
After the game almost at midnight I ate the best gnocchi with tomato sauce ever, the house was packed with people eating and drinking like it was no tommorow at two Am as I left …

Oh,and HI to everyone…still endlessly lurking but have no desire to inetrupt good times in Nova Knickton…no predictions – just a wish – let the bball gods be on our side!!!

Farfa and slovene knick in the house!

At the end of the day, I’d rather have a pivotal missed call than a questionable made call decide a game. But if the tables were reversed, I’d be pissed.

Anyway, onward! I expect the Sixers to regroup and be a formidable opponent on Thursday. Embiid didn’t tweak his knee last game so the 3 days of rest might help him. We still haven’t shown an answer for Maxey, who hit two massive shots to put them in position to win 9 times out of 10. Nurse probably isn’t going to mismanage the last 40 seconds like he did that time. And if we lose game 3, Philly will start believing.

Brunson better snap out of it. We need him to show up big time.

BJ, I won’t be at game 3 but I am coming up Philly for game 4. It’s amazing how badly MSG has warped our brains about how much tickets should cost. $200 for good-not-great seats in Philly felt like I was being done a personal favor.

Convenient for the whiners that Lowry’s ridiculously overturned foul on Donte happened juuuuuust outside the 2 minute mark, huh? Anyway, I’d have no problem admitting otherwise but I continue to see nothing call wise at the end of the game that falls outside the bounds of what any team should expect given subjectivity, the well-known playoff whistle phenomenon, etc.

    Here’s a fun throwback.

I expect Philly to handily beat us in game 3. We need Pags to be in the best apotropaic shape of his life.

I don’t think OG is any better than Jaden Mcdaniels. Watching him dominate on defense vs PHX and his offense seems to show more future room for improvement than OG. OG definitely isn’t worth 35 Million a year.

Jaden McDaniels signed a 5 year / $131,000,000 contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, including $131,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $26,200,000.

Thanks for the link TNFH. Made me want to go to the Breen link and see if the following quote from Joel–“everyone on the floor was trying to call a timeout, myself included“–was true. Well, guess what…

EDIT: on closer inspection he does clap his hands twice, not sure what that signifies…

I expect Philly to handily beat us in game 3. We need Pags to be in the best apotropaic shape of his life.

My pre-series prediction was two incredible close games at MSG followed by us turning in our best performance in game 3 to land the haymaker. I’m sticking with it even though the refs may legitimately make it impossible to win.

If it comes back to the Garden 2-2, Pags’ sense of impending doom won’t even stand out anymore. It will just blend in with the rest of the thread.

Over/Under for Embiid FTs tomorrow is what? 19.5? Higher?

I’m taking the over. Hell, if it was at 21.5 i’d probably take the over too. 😛

Chiming in to say that Juventus sucks utter ass

Hahaha! So we have a team we hate in group. 😀 Well, there’s a lot more people hating them, they’re well known cheaters.

Howdy Farfa, and how are you, everything ok in beautiful Bologna? Well, if we’re still talking about calcio, Bologna is doing great! 😉

Most people picked Knicks in 6 so therefore we should probably expect the series to be tied 2-2 after 4 games.

I’ve been to Milano, but not to San Siro. It sounds amazing to watch a game there. One of these days i might go support my beloved FC Porto at San Siro to check it for myself.
    Welcome back, slovene_knick! 🙂

Howdy Farfa, and how are you, everything ok in beautiful Bologna? Well, if we’re still talking about calcio, Bologna is doing great! 😉

I’m quite fine and starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel 🙂

Bologna calcio is doing something I’ve never thought I’d see in my life: competing for a CL spot 😀 kinda like seeing the Knicks in the finals!

“Most people picked Knicks in 6 so therefore we should probably expect the series to be tied 2-2 after 4 games.”

I was more in the “up 3-1, lose at home, win game 6 in Philly” camp. But hey, any way that gets us to the second round is fine by me, including a sweep.

Refs can lean on a game to push it towards one team by calling a bunch of fouls. But if one team comes out and just dominates there is nothing they can really do to sway it the other way.

I’ve been leaning towards Philly winning game 3 and making a series out of this. But I’m starting to think Hubs might be right and we might land the haymaker punch in game 3.

My thinking is Philly seems to be hung up on the idea that they’re better than us and they was robbed in game 2, etc. I feel like Nurse isn’t going to make any major adjustments because they have been successful so far in neutralizing Brunson and that gives them the best shot at winning.

But outside of Embiid and Maxey, they got no one. Lowry is crafty but he can only do so much.

Meanwhile everyone is saying we’re not as good as them and we didn’t deserve to win game 3. I think this is only going to motivate our team even more and this team’s character is such that if they get motivation like that, they perform well. Thibs is going to adjust to get Brunson going and if Brunson gets going, Philly is fucked. And I also think defensively Thibs is going to adjust to slow down Maxey.

And the extra time off might help Embiid but I still say he is compromised and I feel like he can’t last all 4 quarters, so he’s getting gassed in the second half.

So I don’t know. Could be wrong but I could see us jumping out and crushing them in game 3 and whatever BS the refs try to pull won’t matter. If we get up by 10 or 15 in the first quarter, Philly is going to panic and that will be all she wrote. We know our bench can dominate theirs.

My thinking is Philly seems to be hung up on the idea that they’re better than us and they was robbed in game 2, etc. I feel like Nurse isn’t going to make any major adjustments because they have been successful so far in neutralizing Brunson and that gives them the best shot at winning.

    I agree with this, but…

Interjection: FYI I’ve made a commitment to not criticize Thibs during the playoffs. It’s part of my campaign to stop worrying and love the Thibs.

…but I am afraid Thibs won’t make any adjustments, either. This is not a criticism of Thibs, it is a statement about my own concern.

I decided to be blindly optimistic and expect Thibs to come up with something over the course of these two days to help Jalen Brunson. But I’m not exactly brimming with confidence. The specter of 2021 Randle is looming over this team right now.

The specter of 2021 Randle is looming over this team right now.

Nah. Philly is just a tough match up for Brunson and we are up 2-0. So the pressure is on them, not us. And Brunson might feel pressure to do better, I know he is, but he also knows that his team guy out a win even when he isn’t playing his best. So the trust has to be high right now. Randle literally had no other real options against The Hawks except for the animated corpse of Derrick Rose.

Knicks down to 16-1 to win it all, second best odds in the East. Milwaukee third at 21-1. That of course bakes in a potential Giannis return, but it will be interesting to see what happens when/if Giannis actually does return.

Celtics are only +115 to win it all, barely more than even money.

The specter of 2021 Randle is looming over this team right now.

With the minor exception of the fact we are up 2-0 and not tied at 1-1 and we have 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th options not named Barrett, Noel, Bullock and Payton (yes… those were the other game one starters in 2021).

As much as it would be my life’s honor to be Nobly FaceHumped in person I am unfortunately in Chicago for the weekend and am unlikely to be able to get to Wells Fargo in time for the early game. Have fun at what will basketball gods willing the clincher my friend.

Sounds like the Sixers might run into a little bit of entitlement tilt in Game 3? Am I employing that correctly?

I think Embiid is a hard matchup for Brunson. He’s so good at beating his defender but what’s amazing about him is that he often really creates just a tiny crack which he somehow can ruthlessly exploit. When Embiid is the help defender I think that tiny crack hasn’t been quite enough.

Enter PTMilo to tell me that Brunson has actually shot worse with B-Ball Paul as the secondary defender than he has with Embiid.

    RE: KD
Warts and all..I would absolutely trade for him in a deal that includes Randle if they’d be interested. He’d be a great fit slotted between Hartenstein or Mitch and Anunoby. I’m not calling for it to happen though, because Randle is a great fit there too with the way he has played this season. But…I’m just sayin…

The irony of that deal would be the Knicks got Randle as a fall back option when KD decided to pass on coming here and go to Brooklyn. If it takes Randle and a pick the Knicks should make the deal. KD is the superior offensive player and would take the pressure off Brunson.

God I would hate KD here after what he said about The Knicks. I would also worry about his DIVAesque attitude ruining the vibes.

That being said…he is pretty good at putting the ball in the basket.

Randle did come here when nobody else would , but if it takes Randle and a pick the Knicks should make the deal. KD is the superior offensive player and would take the pressure off Brunson.

Hard pass. KD posted just 4 BPM this year, his worst mark since he was a sophomore in 2009. He’ll be 36 next season. Even all-time greats are like snowballs in hell at that age — our window would be just a little wider, but slamming shut much faster.

Thibs might try some stuff to help Brunson, but I’m mostly expecting Brunson to help Brunson. They’re defending the hell out of him, but as discussed he’s also rushing stuff. He’s had enough good looks during each game to score in the 30s if he’d just make the shots he usually does. If he progresses to the mean we’ll be fine. Not much Thibs can do there except say platitudes like “Calm down.”

On the flip side, my feeling is Thibs can also game plan for Maxey, but the kid is a force. Like many stars he’s going to get his. The upside is that he got his the last two games and we won both. So my expectation is that’ll continue — hopefully both results!

I don’t think OG is any better than Jaden Mcdaniels. Watching him dominate on defense vs PHX and his offense seems to show more future growth than OG. OG definitely isn’t worth 35 Million a year.

This is where it gets difficult to judge defensive ability. Luckily, we don’t necessarily need to judge defense in order to differentiate these two.

McDaniels is an excellent defender and is a big part of the TWolves #1 defense. But he also shot 33% from 3 this year on low volume. Those are marginally lower than Josh Hart’s career numbers.

EPM has OG as a neutral offensive asset at exactly -0.0. McDaniels is at -2.0. Just because OG is primarily known as a defender, that’s not his entire value.

You can’t exploit OG. You can’t sag off him like you can with Josh Hart or McDaniels.

FWIW, OG also has a defensive EPM of 3.1 and McDaniels is at 1.6.

I’m not sure where to find all the matchup data, but OG also has 50lbs on McDaniels per BK-Ref’s listing. I’m not sure McDaniels is switching onto Embiid or Jokic the way OG can.

Durant is just at the fall-off-cliff stage of his career and for the most part his teams tend to underachieve. We have avoided the mistake of acquiring guys like that in recent years and I hope for that to continue. The KD as a Knick ship has sailed.

He’s also kind of an ass. So there’s that.

Really enjoyable bit in the Bill Simmons podcast today just ripping on the Sixers for filing a grievance and whining:

“Here’s a fucking news flash: you’re at MSG, it’s a playoff game, the crowd’s going crazy, you’re probably not gonna get the touch foul on Tyrese Maxey with 12 seconds left. You’re not getting that call. It’s the way the league has worked for the entire time I’ve rooted for it.”

    Simmons is spot on.

Like Nurse is only half ass calling for a time out, hesitating, etc. The place is going wild, they’ve said they’re allowing more contact and there were potential fouls on both ends being committed.

    Sack up.

Asked about the 2-minute report, Tom Thibodeau says he’s more concerned about ‘the 46-minute report.” Says that he knew refs couldn’t call fouls there because of the way they officiated Jalen Brunson during Game 2.— Ian Begley (@IanBegley) April 24, 2024

I mean, this is simply a great quote.

Gotta love Thibs. I know people have their issues with him but the way he answers reporters questions, etc…is always very entertaining.

With the minor exception of the fact we are up 2-0 and not tied at 1-1 and we have 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th options not named Barrett, Noel, Bullock and Payton (yes… those were the other game one starters in 2021).

All solid points, Bob. But here’s the thing: any time a star player comes out of the gate with back-to-back stinkers that seem directly attributable to a new way he’s being defended, I personally will have 2021 Randle flashbacks until said player has one good game.

Kevin Durant is going to have a very, very hard time in retirement. For all his flaws and quirks, that dude exists to play basketball. I’d expect to see him play to 40 at minimum. Won’t be any good, but he’ll keep taking contracts so long as he gets to dribble a basketball. Might even be one of those guys who goes to China and wins MVP at age 43 and is treated like a mega-celebrity by 1.1 billion people.

Tyrese Maxey is a hooper, too. Cannot believe the Sixers managed to find Embiid a Kobe to his Shaq. Knicks in 4.

The thing with a tight whistle on Embiid is that it becomes very hard for the refs not to have a tight whistle on Brunson too – and that might help get him going.

    @IanBegley
Asked about adjusting to a specific Sixers coverage, Jalen Brunson said, ‘The easy answer is I need to adjust and…be more poised; understand what they’re doing & flat-out be better. There’s no gimmicks to it. It’s just, ‘Jalen you need to be better.’ It’s that plain & simple.’

    This is good.

    @KyleNeubeck
De’Anthony Melton was able to practice today and Nick Nurse believes he may be able to suit up for Game 3

    This is less good.

Guys I know we all want to be cool like Pagliacci and embrace the existential dread that lies at the core of being a Knicks fan, but Jalen Brunson is just not 2021 Randle. He has proven himself to a higher standard, and his toughness and mental strength and stability are in a different stratosphere. He is this teams leader, and even though so far it’s been his troops winning the battles, he is not the type to lead from behind. He will study, he will adapt to the physicality and length and silent whistle and he will WILL this team to victory.

    Hey KBers.
Long time no see. I haven’t posted for a long time after several mysterious login failures made me think I was permanently locked out.
An urge to share knicksy euphoria following this auspiscious start moved me to try again and it finally worked.

I have nothing smart or witty to say.
I will just assert my irrational unjustified confidence that
    – JB is going to show up soon
    – Maxy will cool off a bit
    – Collective Knicks grit will gently put Jojo’s dreams of a ring to bed for another season

Many people operate with the belief that the league does, in fact, extend series regularly

I know many people think this. And I know the league has all the tools they need at their disposal to effect outcomes in their lust for money.

    My questions are:

    1) why does the league mainly use these tools to annoy the fans, rather than to create actual revenue?

    2) if you truly believe the league willfully effects outcomes, why do you spend so much time talking about the minutia of the game as if it matters, and why do you place bets on teams, and why on earth would you ever go on record predicting a sweep in this series?

The thing with a tight whistle on Embiid is that it becomes very hard for the refs not to have a tight whistle on Brunson too – and that might help get him going.

I know I pledged to stay positive but other players getting ridiculous calls has not stopped Brunson from getting beaten up all day in the past. The league tends to reward ref whining and does not like popular series to end prematurely, so we very well may be walking into a 30-10 FT disparity on Thursday.

Might even be one of those guys who goes to China and wins MVP at age 43 and is treated like a mega-celebrity by 1.1 billion people.

Hahaha. That’ll be hilarious. I’m already imagining KD in his house in China, using his account and several burners accounts to fight the 50 or 60 chinese that don’t agree he is the MVP! 😀

I expect Philly to handily beat us in game 3. We need Pags to be in the best apotropaic shape of his life.

I gave my word of honor that I would stay positive until at least game 5. Is it possible that I have doomed us by selling my soul for a Game 2 victory?

Guys I know we all want to be cool like Pagliacci and embrace the existential dread that lies at the core of being a Knicks fan, but Jalen Brunson is just not 2021 Randle. He will study, he will adapt to the physicality and length and silent whistle and he will WILL this team to victory.

Personally, I am sticking with my predictions that Brunson will be under 50% TS for the series and will not shoot over 50% in any game.

“But Pagliacci,” you say. “You promised to be positive if we won Game 2!”

Well, I am. We’ll win the series anyway because all the king’s horses and all the king’s men haven’t actually reduced out offensive efficiency as a team at all.

In terms of actual data, the only referee effects I’ve seen proven to a serious level of certainty are Home Court Advantage, which on average is one extra foul called for the home team per game. (Ignoring Tim Donaghy effects and Scott Foster vs CP3 effects) I guess technically that home court advantage would also serve to extend series by giving the presumably worse lower seeded team a better opportunity to avoid getting swept. But claiming anything bigger than that seems more like you’re tilting at windmills…

Which means less watching his right eye try to spasm its way out of his socket. As always lmk if anyone else is going I’ll buy you a beer there 👍🏾

All solid points, Bob. But here’s the thing: any time a star player comes out of the gate with back-to-back stinkers that seem directly attributable to a new way he’s being defended, I personally will have 2021 Randle flashbacks until said player has one good game.

Try some deep breathing exercises or this before game 3 🙂

A + + on the Moody Blues link Bob…perfection personified…i love their music so much…progressive rock, before it was even a thing…so much depth with their music…it’s like being wrapped in sound…

okay, fair play – this one comes from some Wingstop commercial…just loved the beat, turns out it’s an okay tune too…son actually semi acknowledge my coolness for playing it…

    No Flex Zone

dang, just saw the song is 9 years old – man, i need to get out more…

i’m embarrassed to say, but, a bunch of music i like comes from some marketing thing…

I grew up with Riley’s Knicks who 5 times played a Game 7 so a long, extended series was pretty common back then.

i’m embarrassed to say, but, a bunch of music i like comes from some marketing thing…

Let the record show that, while the causal arrow sometimes runs the other direction, I had and liked the Militarie Gun album before the first song became a Taco Bell commercial song.

A lot of my musical taste is informed by songs featured in movies and TV shows I like. I have a very long playlist featuring stuff from The O.C. soundtrack, most notably.

i like it E…i can’t think/link the actual commercial though – you’re talking about: Do It Faster?

i had been thinking about doing it for a while AL, but, one of my better recent subscription situations was with youtube premium…especiall with the nature vids…

nothing like staring at some babbling brook for a few hours to cleanse the mind…here’s a recent fave for that:

i can no longer resist the urge…sometime very soon – seems i’ll be starting a Fallout 76 account…

well, there will go a few hundred hours of my life…

just wanna go walk the wasteland for a while, see what it looks like now…

I gave my word of honor that I would stay positive until at least game 5.

Well, then there’s a chance that you’ll have to stay positive forever because there might be no game 5! 😀

Only slightly more interesting than Fallout 76, whatever that is:
Only 17 players played in all 82 games this season (Buddy Hield played in 84 out of a possible 85 games that he could have played in), and only 29 players played in 80 or more games (including our own ‘Nova hustlebunnies Josh Hart and DDV). Load management schmoad management.

    don’t you dare doogie…

bethesda studios were change gaming…they figured out how to bring out the most OCD behavior in any gaming form…

worse than tetris, candy crush, a slot machine, scrabble, sudoku, crack, food – whatever man…

they brought storytelling, ethics and the absolute NEED to check every fucking nook cranny and box in their entire environments – to the next level, in gaming at least…

and their environments are gargantuan, and memorable…lighting, coloring, rendering, superb…

combat systems/mechanics is truly an individual choice – what ya want…

however, there should be diversity and at least some balance – hard to achieve in player versus player games…

i haven’t done Call of Duty in a while…i haven’t played Fortnite in a long time either – i watch it constantly around the boys…my home feels like a warzone at times – rez me, rez me, why didn’t you rez me, it’s all your fault i just died…over and over and over again…for what’s it’s worth – i correct them, put the dog in their space (dog softens the boys up), take the mic, yell, scream…sadly, it usually takes reverting to my military mode – very frank and plain speaking (read: cruel), with liberal doses of cussing…

you know KfniNJ – i heard scientists say that cussing adds authenticity to your audience’s interpretation of truth/authenticity…

if those speach patterns are comfortable to you, i guess…

#1) why does the league mainly use these tools to annoy the fans, rather than to create actual revenue?#

Nba is not Jesus Christ to be truthful and fair. It’s an extremely successful Business. Using its tools to multiply competition and suspense is part of what made it Huge.

i love when the youngest plays Minecraft – the music is beautiful, combat fun…

they also use it as a teaching aid in school…youngest knows all kinds of “crafting” materials…inventory management – oh yeah 🙂

    i still don’t know what’s going on with Roblox – i don’t understand or like it…

    not a sex/violence thing, more like a weird gambling vibe…i don’t know…

I still don’t understand what’s going on with any of that, or even what it is. But I know that I don’t seem to understand or like it.

#2) if you truly believe the league willfully effects outcomes, why do you spend so much time talking about the minutia of the game as if it matters, and why do you place bets on teams, and why on earth would you ever go on record predicting a sweep in this series?#

    Sweep means big disparity.
    Betting means gamble addiction.
And talking about your team endlessly means need for communication.
Everything in this life comes with limitations.
Expecting from this league to be Perfect and Holy is at least Utopic.

quiet day so, Hubie reminded me of something the other day – the doctor strangelove title and embracing that which you so logically fear…

long story short is that at some point, it’ll be necessary to use ai to maybe protect ourselves from ai…why not…

yeah at the very least, maybe time to start getting more comfortable with the situation, and see what HAL can do for me:

I know I’ve never completely freed myself of the suspicion
that there are some extremely odd things about this mission.

i had the chance to have a computer lab in school back in the late 70’s…the lunar game captivated me…i was very familiar with the visuals of the space program – but, i had never seen it from the text perspective…

late 70’s code…combining the science with the audio and visual is fascinating…bethesda studios fans – are generally really really big math nerds – or they get frustrated and rage…like keeping game spreadsheets…data…lots and lots of data…endless inventorying…

time – while working – at one point, maybe 20 to 30 hours a week…nowadays, about 20 or so…nature vids, lots of nature vids…

adding the facet of “competing” with other “game chair” nerds can be enthralling…more time please…

    i don’t know, maybe it’s a sign of severe introversion – i do get outside…

    I don’t know what’s funnier — geo’s rambling or doogie’s subsequent paralysis.

I looked up ol’ Kev’s numbers this year. 27.1 pts, 6.6 rbs, 5 assts, 41% from three. 626 TS%. Not bad for an old fart. Still don’t want him.

Fios just got booted from my building in Manhattan. Does anyone know if Spectrum carries MSG networks? I cannot find out from the Spectrum website as is balky. Thank you

Mitchell Robinson is listed as questionable for Game 3 with left ankle injury management.Joel Embiid (left knee injury recovery) and De'Anthony Melton (back injury recovery) are both questionable for the 76ers.— Fred Katz (@FredKatz) April 24, 2024

Ugh. A few of us mentioned we saw him limping pretty badly. Would be utterly devastating.

    Would be utterly devastating.

I’d agree, except that almost nothing seems to be devastating to this team

Ugh. A few of us mentioned we saw him limping pretty badly. Would be utterly devastating.

FUCKING SHIT MOTHERFUCKING COCK BALLS FUCK!

100% chance Melton and Lowry will play, and of course Embiid goes without saying.

    FUCK!

If he’s not listed on the injury report as “deceased” I assume Tom Thibodeau will send him out there

I picked the Knicks in 5, and I think tomorrow is the one we give them.

Rest Mitch. Win game 4 in a blowout. Close the series at home.

PS — also use tomorrow to get Jalen right. Let him score 30+ in the loss.

The Heat are shooting over 50% from 3 on high volume, the Celtics are shooting 5-15, and the Heat are losing by 4.

Fios just got booted from my building in Manhattan. Does anyone know if Spectrum carries MSG networks? I cannot find out from the Spectrum website as is balky. Thank you

    It does.

The Heat have zero chance in this series but I hope they at least make the Celtics sweat a little.

I HATE rooting for the Heat, but I hope they kick the Celtics’ asses.

Up by 10 in the third. Fingers crossed.

Spo putting Herro on KP, freeing up Bam to guard Tatum or Brown. If Mazz can’t figure out a way to make the Heat pay for that, could be interesting.

If a Knicks playoff win is a 10 in terms of happy feelings, a Boston loss is at least a 7

60% of shots taken by the Heat tonight are 3PAs. I think they probably need to keep this up to make up for the talent deficit.

They may win this, but this Boston team does give me a bit of pause when they face close games. I am not sold on them.

If a Knicks playoff win is a 10 in terms of happy feelings, a Boston loss is at least a 7

    It’s an 8, Porzingis is 1-9

Wow. No Butler, no Rozier, no problem.

I am so happy we got Philadelphia instead of Miami.

i like that shot of those asshole fans staggering out of the arena in Boston…nooice!

It’s not going to happen, I don’t think, but if the Heat were to Heat against this Boston team, it would be one of the most hilarious things ever.

Nice to see Porzingis wilt under pressure.

Imagine this series tied 2-2 and Jimmy Butler comes back.

No it won’t happen, but if the Celtics get down double figures in game 3 their sphincter’s will get pretty damn tight.

Imagine this series tied 2-2 and Jimmy Butler comes back.

I think he’s out for 4-6 weeks. So just about in time to face the Knicks in the conference finals.

somebody on here a few weeks/months back said Spo was only good because he had hall of famers or some shit like that…that dude is one of, if not the best, playoff coach in the league…period.

I love this Heat team, with the Celtics history against them I’m sure they will panic with this loss.

They’ll very likely still win because of sheer quality difference, but it’s nice to see Boston fans sweating.

Spoelstra> Greg Popovich. This current Heat roster would be a lottery team under Popovich.

    Just thinking GOAT level coaches

Credit Spo for getting them to shoot a bunch of 3s, but come on, hitting 23-43 is not a coach thing, it’s an insane thing.

i was just thinking this…Pop is hanging on to try and ride Wemby’s coat tails…i would take Spo over him any day of the week…

Miami taking Porzingis out of the game and forcing them to take more twos is coaching

KP was 7-13 with 4-8 from 3 just last game. He had a terrible game (I love it), but let’s see if this continues the rest of the series. Yes, getting Boston off the 3pt line is a good defensive thing.

Spo is great, don’t get me wrong, but this game can also be a total outlier based on 3pt shooting.

Shout out to Thibs for tanking 14 games to avoid a first round matchup with the Heat.

Porzingis still has big issues with small guys on him. It’s huge for Miami because it allows Bam to roam around as a defender

OKC is still playing, but so far out of all 1 and 2 seeds, only Boston has lost a game. If you expand it to 3-6, the Bucks also lost a game but at least they have a significant absence.

“Spo is great, don’t get me wrong, but this game can also be a total outlier based on 3pt shooting.”

This was the excuse that a Celtics diehard fan used to explain last year’s playoff loss to the Heat. My guess is that Spo is just fine with the C’s believing that this is an outlier.

From my pov, it looked like the Heat simply outplayed the Celts on both ends.

From my pov, it looked like the Heat simply outplayed the Celts on both ends.

I think the Heat had a good plan, but if they hit a still great 42% of their 3s rather than 55%, they lose this handily.

#somebody on here a few weeks/months back said Spo was only good because he had hall of famers or some shit like that…that dude is one of, if not the best, playoff coach in the league…period.#

I’m the one calling Spoelstra Riley’s puppet of the year and I’m ready to take the L if the Heat manage to lose the next 3 games by less than 20p each!

I guess I’m going to listen to Simmons’ next podcast and see what he thinks of this.

Bill Simmons is going to invite Pagliacci as guest host for his next podcast to see if the Circus of Despair has a Boston Annex…

“I think the Heat had a good plan, but if they hit a still great 42% of their 3s rather than 55%, they lose this handily.”

In last year’s playoff series vs. the Celts, the Heat shot 43.4% from 3. Their wins included:

    Game 1: 51.6%
    Game 3: 54.3%
    Game 7: 50.0%

It’s definitely a strategy, and it worked last year to perfection. Spo seems to give his guys outsized confidence that if they execute his game plan and fire away, they will be successful. It will probably not win them this series because of the on-paper talent differential, but today’s game was not an outlier. The Heat, especially without Jimmy, are even more dependent on seeking and making open 3’s than they were last year.

Go out there and shoot 50% from 3 is a tactic they should use in more games, including game 1, where they shot 32% from 3

The NBA is a copycat league, I think everyone should emulate that strategy and shoot 50% from 3. Hell, I hope Thibs tells the team to do that tomorrow.

“Go out there and shoot 50% from 3 is a tactic they should use in more games, including game 1, where they shot 32% from 3”

I’ll clarify for you, since it seems like you are having trouble understanding what I said, including confusing the meaning of strategy and tactic.

Strategy: Try to generate as many quality 3pt looks for your shooters as you can.
Tactics: The little things you do to generate those quality looks.

Outcome: On average, a higher 3pt% than expected.

Variance: If your team shoots 43+% over a 7-game series, there are likely to be some where you shoot over 50% and you are likely to win those games. In their last 9 playoff games vs. the Celts, the Heat shot over 50% from 3 four times, and won all four games. They are 1-4 in the five games where they shot under 50%.

Just because you have a strategy and tactics, it doesn’t mean you will succesfully execute it. Seems like Spo’s team executes it quite well in the playoffs, and quite often.

I also think that what sets Spo apart as maybe the best coach in the game is that he’s able to adjust strategies and tactics over the course of a given series, and sometimes even in a game, faster than his opposing coaches can counter. Thibs, for example, is slower to conclude that something isn’t working and needs to be adjusted. That’s why I am very happy that we are facing the Sixers and not the Heat right now. Even without Jimmy and Rozier, Spo came up with a game plan that, if successfully executed, could overcome the vast talent differential between the two teams. It depended on generating lots of good looks from 3 and then knocking them down at a high percentage. Tonight it worked!
