I’m on my annual spring road trip with my son, hanging out in South Florida for the next few days. Spring Break is literally No Country for Old Men. Hope I can pick up the late games in our hotel, watched the last one on MSG+.
Cable sucks, of course, but I love that I can watch the Knicks anywhere on my phone because of it. I was visiting my wife’s sister and her family recently in CA, and they just had the Knicks/Warriors game on in the background, and I couldn’t help but “visit” while watching the game the whole time. 🙂
Hope you two have had/continue to have a fun trip!
This OG injury is giving me strong “questionable until they announce he’s done for the season” vibes I’m trying my best to ignore.
since the trade last year, hart, brunson and i-hart have played 1515 possessions together at +15.6/100 (despite 3P% favoring opponents by 200bps). cf. last 2 years: Tatum/Brown/White: +11.4, Jokic/Murray/Gordon +13.9. OG is close to an ideal addition to that trinity, though a lot of that is just due to OG being a basketball skeleton key. the early returns on the foursome have obviously been tiny but mouth-watering. don’t quite think we have the pitch perfect playoff 5th wheel for that particular lineup, but DD is a very solid fit against most opponents and Randle and Bojan are still very workable there. a mostly healthy playoff glimpse is so tantalizing.
The Brunson/OG combo is just so lethal, because suddenly the team (which was already pretty darn good on defense) becomes a defensive monster (and that’s without Mitch in the paint. Can you even imagine an OG/Mitch combo on defense?
i am curious about it. i mean, i know it will be good, but i’m less sure whether it will be as devastating as it feels like it should (ignoring health). in general, i have been a little skeptical that mitch has become quite as dominant a defender as it can seem from watching. the 30K feet numbers stubbornly dissent.
over the last 4 seasons, we allow 113.6/100 with mitch on and 111.6 with mitch off. that is something that rarely happens over long samples to all-defense neighborhood rim protectors. admittedly some is because the knicks have had some unusually strong back-up 5 minutes. but note the defense has allowed only 110.3/100 in 8934 possessions with none of: mitch, i-hart, noel over that span. the mitch-on 113.6 is just a tick better than the nba average from 2020-2024. rapm and luck-adjusted rapm numbers similarly don’t think mitch is a nearly elite defender (more like “okay to pretty good”).
a somewhat less big picture way to look at rim protectors is how many rim fg per 100 are allowed when they play. these are essentially always favorable in long samples for universally revered defensive bigs. for example, over the last two seaons: gobert 15.4 rim fg allowed / 100 on, .196 / 100 off. AD is .167 / 100 on, .184 / 100 off. embiid is .175 / 100 on, .199 / 100 off. Lopez is .15 / 100 on, .175 / 100 off. draymond is .119 / 100 on, .145 / 100 off. mitch, meanwhile is .184 on, while i-hart is .166. and with neither mitch nor i-hart? .183. nba average is .177.
but here’s my personal favorite. we now also have estimates of individual defensive fg% at the rim. people have quickly realized its many limitations. but the most common caveat is to point out that some bigs may generate very impressive dfg% without deterring very many still-lucrative rim attempts, and so give additional credit for frequency of rim attempts defended. this makes sense, but it’s a double-edged sword, since personally defending a lot of rim attempts can mean that people are challenging you, but it can also mean that you are bothering a lot of shots that other bigs might not have been in position to defend. one plausible way to start to account for these dynamics is to compare the number of personally attributed rim misses to the number of total rim makes allowed when on the court. after all, it’s not that impressive to say that a particular big is allowing a low percentage on a low number of rim contests, yet overall the opponent is still making a ton of close shots when he is not the attributed defender. so here’s the rim fg personally thwarted / rim fg overall made when on court for a few select defenders over the last two seasons:
gobert: .318
embiid: .306
AD: .261
lopez: .432
draymond: .270
jjj: .312
i-hart: .299
mitch: .189
don’t take this to be “actually mitch sucks as d.” i am just not sure that mitch/og will be better or even as good as i-hart/og. i still miss mitch tho, and if fairly healthy he will be a big improvement over our current non i-hart minutes.

Noble, Bondy (who is usually the most doom-and-gloom of the beats) spoke to three surgeons, who suggested it’s just a matter of managing it with rest at times, but that it’s also important for him to be active. So it’s not about shutting him down again. This response is more or less to be expected.
I honestly don’t get this. Being a “longtime listener” before dipping my toe into the pool while the opinions expressed here are generally fact based, the overriding negativity makes me wonder if this board leads the league in antidepressant consumption. Not to make fun of a serious illness, but this is basketball fellas, not war or peace.
Could OG elbow fall off a week from next coming Tuesday, well , I guess it could, but let’s look at the incomplete information we have:
1… OG is looking at a life changing payday at the end of the season. Unless he is a complete moron, he has his own doctors and agent looking out for HIS best interests, he wouldn’t consent to any path that could impact his long-term earnings.
2… His surgery clearly didn’t involve any ligament transplant or anything of that nature since he was able to return in 6 weeks. One can only assume HIS medical team as well as the Knick’s medical team concurred on this path.
3…. In the Post yesterday 3 surgeons (unsurprisingly) parroted the scenario I wrote about saying he is experiencing expected post-surgical inflammation that may manifest itself in exactly this way. The fact he returned to the game and played 19 minutes well in the second half sort of argues against the catastrophic scenario.
4… Dolan’s Razor does not apply here. Be objective, look at the facts on the ground and apply Ockham’s Razor, not Dolan’s Razor and don’t “Chicken Little” yourself into an unhappy place.
Yeah, Alan I saw that article. But I am edging into Noble territory because (1) it’s the Knicks; (2) it’s a Knicks’ medical communication; (3) it involves pain; (4) it involves pain to a body part that is healing; (5) it involves pain to a body part that is healing and is crucial to the player being effective; and (6) (in a nod to E) it involves pain to a body part that his healing and is crucial to the player being effective whose coach will play him too many minutes.
More important, dogrufus made parole. Welcome back, congratulations on becoming a productive member of society. (I always knew the Ban Hammer as a tool of reform, not retribution:)
So Dolan’s Razor is the strongest force in the universe, akin to ‘dark matter’ and OG is a powerless cuck in its mighty presence? 🙂 WOW Dolan’s Razor is strong in you young Skywalker. I better not stick around here long or I may fall into its evil clutches.
Check your “started rooting for the Knicks before the mid 2000s” privilege.

I think you could play Hart less minutes. He had a short offseason, has some knee issue, and is already 29. Playing him over 40 minutes game after game is increasing the risk of something bad happening. Five more minutes to Precious, or to Bojan, will not kill this team.
I agree darules, and we should be trying to get at least Bojan to fit in offensively
Maybe the real secret is don’t play defense with a center?
I am fairly obtuse, so I have no earthly idea what this even means. Any BB fan in their mid 30’s or above could fit this description. Is there anything unseemly about having perspective and not clutching for pearls or a pacifier when things go slightly awry?
It’s incredible how you guys can id people.
OG has become my second biggest reason to watch the Knicks. He is unbelievable. Hope he gets healthy.
This is the conundrum faced by Thibs due to the rash of major injuries. He was playing JHart<30m/g prior to the injury rash. You say give five or so minutes to Precious or Bojan. First , because of the injuries he had already more than doubled Precious' minutes in February from 18 to 39! You want to run him up to 44m/g? If not, you suggest Bogey. You want his -5 BPM on the floor more?
Remember, TODAY the Knicks are 3 games out of the play-in. By the end of the road trip they easily could be in the play in. Staying among the top 6 is imperative, as the top 6 get a week off during the play-in to rest and heal, which they most certainly need.
1. Precious has been playing a lot less since OG came back.
2. Yes, I want Bojan in for 5 more minutes, if it gives Hart a breather.
It’s not just the elite backup Cs but Mitch playing with Brunson/RJ/Randle who range from below-average (being charitable) to terrible on defense. Meanwhile the 2nd unit has featured pretty good defenders.
I do think iHart is better though
ah, now that we have been properly introduced BPL – welcome welcome welcome 🙂
if it’s okay to know – what finally got you posting?
for myself, it was trying to stay sane at work…that and i found dear ‘ol jowles to be very fascinating, sharp intellect with a strong personality…
i’ll be honest, not hard to see i use the site as therapy…i have some challenges with my mental health…
what got you in to the knicks?
they got on my radar when bernard king dropped a couple of 50 point games…i became a steady fan though when patrick ewing got drafted…
if you were to ask me – he still might be my favorite knick of all time…
recency bias though, maybe julius is today…i just find his very visible struggle for control so incredibly relatable…
when ever, where ever folks gather – the subject is always life…it is simply being described in different terms…
if everything was already perfect in everyone’s life, folks wouldn’t need to be here…
i’m not sure if like doogie you’re not familiar with video games, but – sometimes it’s cathartic to play spiderman and just rage a bit…
get online and let some frustration out – when i first joined: i hated phil jackson soooo much with his smug personality, ignorance disguised as blinding brilliance – not…someone described me as: mewling, and they were right…
much better though than exploding on the people close in your life – that’s really not a good thing to do…
i don’t know if KB as a: we are all sitting at a table together, enjoying the company of others analogy works for you…the best way to put it maybe:
“in a world where you can be anything: be kind”
hopefully some day i am sitting at a table with some more of you…drinking/eating/smoking/talking 🙂
Perfectly reasonable. I’m sure Thibs ‘wants’ to play Bogey more but fears dropping a game or two in the standings more than he fears JHart getting injured. And for the 2 games OG has been back Thibs could have used Precious for the relief of JHart’s 4 minutes when he wasn’t backing up I Hart (which currently is his real ‘day’ job). The previous 16 games… not so much.
Watching all the ZOMG BRUNSON IS DEAD! when he got injured and my experience (and the symptoms) told me it wasn’t a catastrophic injury…. I thought I could add something substantive to the conversation. Hence the name Brunson’s Peroneus Longus. I thought it a nice touch.
Your perspective was welcome and needed.
now that is a pretty darn cool origin story…what got you in to the knicks?
good stuff milo, yeah – my eyes were not seeing those numbers you mentioned…wow…
any idea what he needs to do to fix those numbers?
– is he too slow?
-has difficulty synergizing with the others to play good team defense?
oh, and doogie wants to know – did you mean to say: he sucks “at” d(efense), or he sucks “as” d(efense)?
and, don’t work so hard…
Says he went through shootaround.
the Rockets being a weirdly good team at home has worked out for the Knicks tonight
go OG…
every time i turn on a rocket’s game jalen green looks amazing…
