“For some reason, I’d really like 50 wins. It’s just a nice round number”

I mean, I guess going 11-5 for the rest of the season is possible, and I’d like to see it as well, but I wouldn’t want to count on it. If Ju and/or Mitch come back anywhere near the next 7-10 days or so, we’d still want to bring them in slowly, plus once our seeding has been determined for certain (if indeed it *is* determined prior to the last game or two), we may want to rest our starters and take some losses.

Didn’t like Brunson grabbing his hip last game; certainly did not like OG grabbing his elbow last night.

The sensible part of me would like to see OG sit out the next game, regardless of whether it is needed as it certainly can’t hurt. The paranoid part of me would dread that.

It’s funny Owen, for some reason I watched the game until the final buzzer, and a Blazer player put up a 3 that missed and would have cut the deficit to 10

It’s why I never bet on basketball, the final scores are way too random.

With all the injuries that we’ve had to major players, we’re still on a 48-win pace. When you think of it in those terms, we’ve got a pretty damn good team.

I’ve been saying for a while now that all they needed to do was get OG healthy, and they were going to start winning, like, every game again. The Brunson/OG combo is just so lethal, because suddenly the team (which was already pretty darn good on defense) becomes a defensive monster (and that’s without Mitch in the paint. Can you even imagine an OG/Mitch combo on defense? That, by the way, seems to be something that the Knicks privately are very much looking forward to themselves, so I think Mitch is getting his starting gig back whenever he’s fully healthy. Not saying that in a “He deserves it” sense, but more a “This just seems to be their plan” sense), and obviously Brunson is already an offensive monster, and now you have OG at the 4 on offense? It’s just such a well-designed team right now. If those two dudes stay healthy, they are going to win so many fucking games, and be a real tough out in the playoffs.

we should have won that game by 20 something if anyone made some shots

with Mitch I’d at least like to see them play him with the current starters and see how it goes before the playoffs, so I hope he gets back soon. It’s entirely possible the team works better with iHart and I’d rather not experiment when the games really count

It’s entirely possible the team works better with iHart and I’d rather not experiment when the games really count

Oh, totally, that’s why I noted “fully healthy,” as obviously you work Mitch back in slowly.

I think Mitch will be eased in slowly whether they start him or not. Last time he had an extended injury it took him awhile to get his conditioning back. Mitch’s return will be good for I-Hart. If I-Hart is not playing as many minutes there will be less of a strain on his Achilles, especially because it looks like we can give Precious minutes here or there and give I-Hart a game off if he has some tenderness (like Thibs would ever do something sensible like that).

Winning by double digits when you shoot 20% from 3 is very hard to do, even against a bad team.

I asked this in the game thread, but will ask again: does Bojan have the yips? It’s really odd, most of his shots are not even close. He’s air balling open 3s, missing the rim by 3 feet on mid range jumpers, not making layups, and hitting the front of the rim with line drives basically all the time. What the hell is happening there?

I expected Bogey to be a tricky fit because of his defensive issues. But the fact that his shooting has cratered on almost every level is alarming.

Terrible news about RJ’s younger brother,
condolences to the Barrett family, I can’t even start thinking at the pain.

    does Bojan have the yips?

My short answer is yes, for the exact details you pointed.

He’s unnaturally “measuring” his shots like I’ve never seen him do before.

Hope it’s just a prolonged slump that go away with one good shooting game (they let him shot the technical FT yesterday, good move to rebuild his confidence).

Burks on the other end took 5 shots in 4 minutes and basically everything he does look “wrong” (as in “he’s cooked for good”).

He’s unnaturally “measuring” his shots like I’ve never seen him do before.

Most likely in large measure the vibes he’s gotten from Thibs have shaken his confidence, and there are also expectations here that he hasn’t really dealt with in a couple years.

But at this point, he needs to show some moxie and get with the program or he’s going to be picking splinters come spring time.

Wait, are we blaming Thibs’ so-called vibes for guys forgetting how to shoot? Jesus, people really try to find ways to pin everything on the coach.

Yeah, I don’t even talk about Burks anymore because he seems irredeemable. Other than end-of-bench guys who are thrown into an important game for injury reasons, I don’t recall ever seeing a player who has been as out of control as he is. If he gets the ball, there are only two possible ways the possession ends – with a poor shot attempt or a turnover. He has 1.8 assists/36 playing ostensibly as the main ball handler. It’s bonkers.

    Re: Bojan

Yeah, I think he’s playing “scared” or at least “worried” and his confidence is really down.
Yesterday after missing a shot he was shaking his head and waving his arms like saying “what the hell is happening” and it’s not the first time in the last few games.

But he needs to step up and play like he did in the first few games here.

Just to let you all know i’ve finished packing… i’m leaving Burks island! Also to let you know that with me leaving the island is now deserted! Poor Burks! 😛

Thibs to blame for Bojan’s struggles?

Reminds me of a story long ago about the Tampa Bay kicker saying that coach McKay made him nervous and that’s why he was missing so many chippies.

When asked about it, McKay responded ” I plan on attending all the games”

Some other things that are Thibs’ fault:

    Paper cuts
    Traffic on the 101
    Scott Baio
    The Rolling Stones’ “Dirty Work”
    Pebble in my shoe
    Captcha
    Gingivitis

You forgot about me, JK. Among all the other annoying entities being assigned to Thibs for blame, he is also very *clearly* at fault for my presence on Earth. (No, he’s not my Dad. I’m joking. 🙂 )

Didn’t get to see the game, for which I am glad, but our little gladiator goes off for 45 and nothing in the game thread or afterward even mentioning it? Just another dull Thursday night in Knicksland?

Macri called it the most ho-hum 45-point game in memory.

    But he also noted this:

“With 15 more rebounds on his ledger, since January 29 (the first post-Randle/OG game), Hart is 9th in the NBA in rebounds per game, 8th in total rebounds, and 5th in total defensive rebounds, trailing only Domantas Sabonis, Jarrett Allen, Nikola Jokic and Anthony Davis. He has more total boards in this 20-game stretch than Zion Williamson and LeBron James combined.”

Macri called it the most ho-hum 45-point game in memory.

2-10 from 3, more turnovers than assists, some calls that bailed him out from bad choices…
I understand the usually very positive Macri keeping it cool… 😉

OG just changes everything, and on both ends. It’s wild for a guy whose box score doesn’t jump off the page, but lends a lot of credence to the metrics that incorporate everything else and say he’s a top 30-40 player. I am so god damn happy we have that guy, and relatedly so god damn worried about his elbow.

My kingdom for a healthy Knicks team in the playoffs.

All signs point towards me issuing a mea culpa on Burksdanovic, but we are still dealing with samples we wouldn’t notice if we didn’t watch the team everyday so I hope Thibs continues to deploy them as if they were the players they were before they got here. It is also downright bizarre how bad Quentin Grimes has been in Detroit. I like the guy and hope he pulls it together, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t soften the blow a bit.

But at this point, he needs to show some moxie and get with the program or he’s going to be picking splinters come spring time.

He’s been in and out of the lineup with the same knee issue he had in NY (that Thibs contributed to). I would not shock me if he has some minor surgery after the season.

He’s not playing poorly overall. He just can’t hit a shot, especially a 3. That may be rust and randomness as much as anything else. I don’t think it will be a long term issue. We know he can shoot 3s with a quick release. That’s why defenses stay on him.

We know Bojan can shoot also. He’s not going to keep bricking forever. The problem with him is that he has to do more shot creation in our 2nd unit and he can’t defend a lick. But I’m not worried about him hitting open looks when he gets them.

“With 15 more rebounds on his ledger,

Hart has been doing a very good job filling some of the gaps left by Randle being out. His rebounding and play making have been excellent. He’s undersized defensively against some matchups when he’s at PF, but overall his defense has probably been better than Randle’s. So what we are missing is Randle’s scoring and that extra depth. That’s putting a strain on Brunson and DDV to score more, but if we can get OG rolling on offense that will help take some of the pressure off them until Randle is back.

Hart is starting to remind me a poor man’s Russell Westbrook (in his prime) – endless energy, uncanny rebounder,, great in transition,, not so great at shooting the basketball.

And he’s also a little crazy like Russ too.

So…………14-2 with OG, and 8-10 without him? Do I have that right? Seems significant.

The crazy thing about OG defensively is how active he is. He’s flying around rotating and defending 3 to 4 players in a single possession. He’s way more disruptive than I thought.

The thing that surprised me about OG is how big and thick he is. Maybe in Toronto they had so many long players it wasn’t as noticeable, but he’s a big guy.

It is also downright bizarre how bad Quentin Grimes has been in Detroit. I like the guy and hope he pulls it together, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t soften the blow a bit.

I’m not sure how bizarre it is. He earned the starting job and Thibs was among his biggest supporters. Thibs begged him to shoot open shots and Grimes systematically played his way out of the line-up before he got hurt. His health may be an issue but management lost confidence in him (well earned) before he got the knee sprain, and was out of the immediate plans and expendable.

I am so god damn happy we have that guy, and relatedly so god damn worried about his elbow.

He’s clearly one of those guys where even the most advanced of advanced metrics doesn’t accurately quantify his true value. I know guys like to “chicken little” the hell out of this place, but I wouldn’t be very concerned about his elbow.

He had surgery about 6 weeks ago and they found no serious structural damage. In an ideal world, they would have amped him up over 10-12 weeks, but they couldn’t for obvious reasons. The medical staff and his own doctors are comfortable that no further damage is likely and occasionally when he gets bumped or extents it in the wrong way, it “zets” him. When you poke a couple of incisions through the skin and joint capsule and suck out bodies or grind away at an exostosis you set up an inflammatory reaction that will bother him from time to time and decreases over time. Unless he falls on it, he’ll be fine.

Grimes was never all that. Doesn’t have the skillset. Never did.

Discussed here at length which, viewed objectively in basketball terms, was some of the best of what KB has to offer, though there was obviously a lot of controversy and accusations and whatnot.(*)

The entire episode looks for all the world like one of Thibs’s bizarre temporary fascinations/infatuations.

(*) Biggest problem is that he simply can’t stop and gather after movement and shoot an on-balance jump shot at any passable degree of effectiveness. So he doesn’t bother trying at all.

Grimes was never all that. Doesn’t have the skillset.

The entire episode looks for all the world like one of Thibs’s bizarre temporary fascinations/infatuations.

That is just your BS hatred of Thibs.

Last season in his second year in the league he posted league average ws/48 a 61.9ts% and hit 38.9% of 407 3s starting 66 games for the 5th place team in the Eastern Conference. He had limitations, but he certainly opened the floor for Brunson and Randle’s isoball offense that worked great until the both got injured in the playoffs.

To imply Grimes was some figment of Crazy Thibs imagination is just nonsense.

quentin has strong landry fields vibes…

his health isn’t right…I still think he was moving like he had a lower back iissue which limits the strength in his legs…

Things that are not Thibs’ fault:

    Ben Simmons
    Paul George
    Yoko Ono
    9/11
    Dirty Work the film
    McCabe & Mrs. Miller
    Alex Lee Moyer
    James Dolan
    Aaron Rodgers

management lost confidence in him (well earned) before he got the knee sprain, and was out of the immediate plans and expendable.

I don’t know how well earned it was. When we went 14-2 in January, Grimes averaged over 17 pts/36 off the bench while shooting 36% from three. The bench mob with Deuce, Grimes, and Hart was actually quite good. Add Hartenstein or Mitch to that trio and I think it could have been an impactful second unit.

Thibs is riding his players too hard and risking serious injury. Other than that he’s an excellent coach, clearly the best the Knicks had since Riley, or maybe JVG.

    BrunsonPeroneusLongus

not sure if this was already sussed out…but thats you Pags…right?

Don’t disagree, darules, but then again, look at the team. Right now the only cromulent bench players are McBride and Precious. Otherwise he’s got Sims (who I like more than some, but he’s certainly still massively limited at this point in his career), and the Bobbsey Twins from Detroit.

The latter two are borderline unplayable right now. I’d say we need some Shake (and bake), and I’ll always advocate for more Deuce. But it’s hard not to play the starters 35 minutes each at the moment (and Hart 41, of course…).

Miami (det) and Orlando (tor) both have pretty easy matchups tonight which is a bummer. I’m looking forward to watching Jokic vs Wemby

Yeah I was advocating for Burks and maybe both of them can turn it around but it is not looking good right now.

IF anything Rose should have just offered up Fournier and 2 seconds for Bojan and then gone after Lowry from the waiver wire. I guess he really wanted to go to Philly but I feel like Lowry for 10 minutes a game costing us nothing but cash from the waiver wire would have been much better than Burks and he’s actually a PG.

But loving Deuce and how he has stepped up. I think lost in this trade and all the injuries the last month is how much McBride has proven he can be part of the rotation. He’s not much of a PG. Not yet, at least. But he can shoot well and he’s a great defender. For a bench guard, I’ll take that every day of the week. And I don’t see him losing confidence like Grimes did.

“Thanks Thibs” should be our own “Thanks Obama” for whenever anything goes wrong with the Knicks.

At the time the AB/BB trade made sense to me and I liked it overall, with a tinge of regret because I thought we were selling low on Grimes. Known quality of players coming in, potential unknown going out. I also thought the Deuce extension was puzzling.

Shows what I know. So ( outside of E ) if I disagree with you…

““Thanks Thibs” should be our own “Thanks Obama” for whenever anything goes wrong with the Knicks.”

Does this mean that we were sarcastically thanking Obama for something? I must have missed that.

I’m looking forward to watching Jokic vs Wemby

Every time I see Jokic, I think of he and his brothers (and about 20,000 like them) in the Goth Army pummeling Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople and virtually finishing off the Roman Empire after a thousand years. Those guys must have been rough to deal with in hand to hand combat.

You realize he played 45 games for the Knicks this year and not 16, right. During his “hot streak” where the Knicks were 14-2 Grimes TS% clocked in at a below league average 56.3% and was an awful 54.3% for all 45 games. It was 61.9% last year and that was his value… high efficiency shooting with good defense. With low efficiency shooting and a reluctance to let it fly, his importance and value diminished.

I believe he was just talking about what Grimes did once OG was on the scene and pretty much everything got better for everybody. 🙂

not sure if this was already sussed out…but thats you Pags…right?

ahhhh, well done pepper, well done indeed…

yeah, it kind of threw me off a little just how comfortable brunson’s long bent dick was getting in to it with folks after just starting to post…

it reminded me of my work days…i had an office in the warehouse, there was a water machine there and people from around the building would walk to it to get water all the time…

i remember one day looking out my office and noticing this new employee (some exempt employee, project manager type) sauntering across the warehouse floor like they hadn’t a care in the world…

literally no sense of urgency in their body language at all…

they just looked waaaaay too freaking comfortable for just joining the company and being new to the workplace…

turns out they were in fact pretty lazy…which – was really obvious from their behavior from the first time i saw them (verbal and non-verbal both give out lots of clues)…

i feel better now knowing it’s pags…i was very distrustful of brunson’s long bent dick though…

oh, yeah my bad for making fun of folks with peyronie’s…that does sound like some kind of curse though for your johnson to ache every time you get a bit excited…

i’m not seeing any information online related to OG’s elbow from last night…i guess it just didn’t simply fall off his body after the game…that’s something good at least…

I’m amused by your certainty, Geo, but I’m not this Brunson Peroneus guy’s alter ego any more than I am E’s. I haven’t had time to post much, but I think I’ve been fairly positive since the OG trade, avoiding the usual spats that seem to come up around here.

I did used to post under another name years ago, but it wasn’t E or Brunson Peroneus. It was somone far, far worse.

howdy pags, I hope all is well for you and you’ve been a good kind of busy lately 😊

not really certain at all, more hopeful I guess…

it looks like BPL will continue to be a bit mysterious…

it could just be their personality type which makes them easily comfortable to engage in this type of communications…zero to full forward in just a few days…

no big deal, just interesting behavior on their part…

what’s the deal with that pags?

you seem pretty composed and fairly mellow since I can recall you posting…

what was going on 10 years ago that it would seem okay to get in to it with strangers online?

I knew we should’ve created a wiki with advanced metrics for all Knickerblogger posters….

yes under the silver lake guy, who does software stuff and is now not living in the US – we should all be tracking and cataloging people and personalities 🙃

    that’s the real game here…

Pags, I didn’t once accuse you of working out of your mother’s basement in a dilapidated suburb outside of Moscow, did I?

(If not you, who was that guy…?)

Oh, for the love of God…

    @FredKatz
OG Anunoby is listed as QUESTIONABLE for tomorrow’s game with right elbow injury management.

KnickfanunCslticland is a doctor, it’s possible he changed his name. But he post very rarely, so I consider this unlikely.

Jokic got blocked once or twice by Wemby but is otherwise eviscerating the Spurs.

actually, I’m pretty happy to see that al…

I hope all is well with your health too al…

I’m now down about 15 lbs or so since I finally started caring for my diabetes thing last summer (that and the patient help from a dietitian…

I still remember the conversation about needing to get away from whole milk, that was a tough one…

I was so overwhelmed at the time I could only reply – but I’m eating pita bread now

like that was really making any difference in the situation…

nice to see the difference in the mirror – i know you must be enjoying the experience…

I’m now down about 15 lbs or so since I finally started caring for my diabetes thing last summer (that and the patient help from a dietitian…

I don’t give medical advice, but there is a UCLA trained Nephrologist in Toronto named Dr. Jason Fung who wrote an excellent book called “The Diabetes Code” which deals with reversing type 2 diabetes strictly through dietary intervention. It is an excellent read and you can find his stuff on Youtube by Googling….

thank you BPL…even the second dietician i spoke with was like: oh, your meds are finally on point…my first dietician needed to take some time away from her clients…

i responded to the second dietician that the most impactful thing was my conversations with her colleague who was patient, listened and kindly explained things to me…that was the biggest difference by far…

    you’re not AI are you?

No way it’s Ted, come on. And not acerbic enough for Abbey. Though people can mellow over time.

Hey geo! I’ve been okay, thanks. My boy is about to turn 1 and I I’m maybe getting the hang of this whole dad thing. Very busy, yes, but I seem to be tolerating that better than I used to.

I haven’t posted as much of late because it’s usually 1AM EST by the time I get the chance, and the morning thread tends to cut off the conversation. On top of that, the whole “half our talent is always fucking injured” story arc that I suspect is going to turn out to define this season has been numbing.

Anyway, to answer your question, I wasn’t in the best place mentally back circa 2012. My twenties were kind of an extended bad Randle season. I felt that our next 10 years or so as a team were going to be a hopeless morass of incompetent futility and broken dreams. You know, crazy talk!

Somehow, spreading that doom and gloom felt cathartic in some way.

TNFH guessed it. I was dogrufus.

that was so freaking cool pags, thank you for sharing that…

yeah man, the parenting thing is the hardest stuff I’ve ever done…

I had a shitty dad, dishonest and self serving…thankfully ma taught me how to parent well…didn’t wanna be like my dad though…

it’s a lot of work, and I only do it part time…

you know what the coolest part is – it is truly one of those things that if you can get it right there is no more satisfying feeling in the world…almost nothing else matters…clarity of purpose is power…

it seems to be easier to be a better you when you’re motivated to do so for others…

and, the next time you change a poopy diaper, just remember you’ll be able to hold that over them the rest of your life…

Oh, for the love of God…

I don’t think injury management is a bad thing, to be honest. This is what the Knicks probably should have been doing more of. OG’s elbow is so important, keep it as healthy as it can be for the playoffs!
