2023-24 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Pistons (November Closer Opener, which is definitely not a thing)

After the Knicks were able to beat up on the shitty Hornets, they get another delightful treat, as they get to host the even worse Detroit Pistons tonight.

The Pistons are just a total mess, but at least they’re paying Monty Williams gazillions of dollars to coach this mess!

This better be an easy win.

In a big country, we go to 53!

Let’s go, Knicks!

This is a great opportunity to get the worst loss of the season out of the way early. Can we do it?

We’re 14 ½ point favorites against the absolute worst team in the NBA coming off a shellacking at home by the Lakers last night

What could possibly go wrong?

So NBA just announced the schedule scenarios if Knicks lose to the Bucks. If Boston loses to Indiana the Knicks will go there on Friday but if Indiana loses they come to NY on Wednesday which means a back to back for the Knicks. WTF why the hell are they potentially making the Knicks play a back to back???

LOL, i see what you’re doing! 😉

Gooooo Knicks! 🏀
(don’t know if i can watch some of the game or not, but the “go knicks” it’s tradition)

When is the last time the Knicks were favored by 14 1/2 points? Also, I am a diehard fan for over 55 years, but back against the wall, I’ll take the points. Maybe part of the odds is Thibs inclination to play starters too much, even in a blow out.

I’m not saying it’s because the lawsuit, but…

It just makes no sense that the game at Boston would be on Friday but Indiana on Wednesday? Rangers don’t play at MSG that Friday so it can’t be that unless MSG has something else already booked that night?

Here’s to not letting them mount a massive comeback in the third quarter.

Here’s to not not letting them mount a massive comeback because they’re already up by 10 at the half…

Quick Quick!

randle starts out full sun also rises on the cade layup

Lol

Then he does a great contest on the entry when Mitch switches on the pnr. Guy is a mystery wrapped in a riddle wrapped in an enigma or what have you

i think that is offensive foul number 26 drawn by brunson. in 15-16, lillard led the league with 34 for the entire season.

I cannot imagine how brutal it must be to have the #1 overall pick and wind up with Cade Cunningham

“I cannot imagine how brutal it must be to have the #1 overall pick and wind up with Cade Cunningham”

You mean the Cade Cunningham that is treating the Knicks like little bitches?

I cannot imagine how brutal it must be to have the #1 overall pick and wind up with Cade Cunningham

I went back to look at who they could have drafted and wow, what an incredibly shitty draft that was

Who’s the best player from that draft class, Franz Wagner?

If we give up Cade Cunningham’s first game of the season shooting 50%+ we lose automatically

Cade was the obvious consensus 1st pick though, was there even a slight debate about someone else going 1st overall that draft?

Wow, Cade is dumb as well as not good – didn’t go to the mismatch with the lane completely open

Who’s the best player from that draft class, Franz Wagner?

It’s like getting the #3 pick and ending up with Barrett

Yeah I think that draft actually holds up pretty well, just…not because of Cade. Even Suggs is starting to look damn good.

It’s so bizarre that Monty Williams basically hazes Jaden Ivey, who has been good, while letting Cade lead them to the worst record ever

We had reached a point with RJ where I was genuinely expecting shots to go in, or at least not assuming they wouldn’t.

We have come back from that point.

“barnes, mobley and sengun are all very good players”

Cade, Green, Suggs, Giddey, and Kuminga all might come around.

I went back to look at who they could have drafted and wow, what an incredibly shitty draft that was

Who’s the best player from that draft class, Franz Wagner?

I looked it up

Evan Mobley and Scottie Barness have the highest WS, BPM and VORP in the 2021 draft so them.

Looking at it, the Knicks had a great draft. They picked Grimes and Deuce and also collected a future 1st and 2nd. Not bad in a shitty draft.
#19 for protected Charlotte 2022
#21 for #25 and future 2nd to Clippers
#25 Grimes
#32 Jeremiah Robinson-Earl who was traded for …
#36 Miles McBride
and the rights to Rokas Jukobaitis

There’s a few good players from the 2021 draft, but I don’t see any generational talent at this point. Still think it was a terrible draft year.

“#32 Jeremiah Robinson-Earl”

They traded the rights to #32 for #34 (Rokas) and #36 (Deuce). Also picked Sims at #58

Did I just see RJ drive left and get blocked at the rim?

That’s a new one.

At least the Knicks City Dancers bring it every time. Although their choreographer deserves a lot of credit. But you have have the people who can execute.

Brunson is SO much better than I thought he’d be.

And I thought he’d be good.

I’ll probably be saying that his entire career…

Yeah I should chime in as well, that was an awesome story about Mitch. He seems like a genuinely good dude as does really the entire Knicks roster. They might frustrate us at times with their play but they’re all very easy guys to root for.

That’s the third air ball by Randle that I’ve noticed…

No more cake for you, Julius!

Loved the Mitch story.

I’m guessing the answers are Lee, Chandler and Stoudemire.

Knicks can’t seem to pull away. Worrisome.

It’s not optimal when a guy like Randle who tries to draw contact can’t make foul shots

“#32 Jeremiah Robinson-Earl”

They traded the rights to #32 for #34 (Rokas) and #36 (Deuce). Also picked Sims at #58

Yep. I edited my post about the trade but missed Sims, another gem. 3 serviceable players and a Euro-stash.

I liked Julius more when he was 28.

Did Grimes just try to dunk on the backboard?

“Worst half of the season by the Knicks.”

Hopefully this is your last “Worst ___ of the season” post for tonight…

RJ has been struggling the last few games. Badly missing some open shots. It is scary to think that Brunson could be even better with better shooters to provide more spacing.

“Did Grimes just try to dunk on the backboard?”

I have no idea what he was thinking. Dude is pressing mightily.

Yeah Z-Man not worried about actually losing this game so no more worst posts from me tonight. Hopefully….

“So is Wiseman injured or does he not play?”

Maybe he should change his last name to Tallman…

So Grimes, DDV, and Quickley each get about 10 first-half minutes and none of them get in a rhythm, cool.

This game sucks. I think I’m going to watch the new reality Squid Game if Thibs doesn’t light a fire under these guys at halftime.

We gotta get a real backup for Julius so we can fucking bench his ass on nights like this

I missed the dazzling action, but he’s a +11 so far with only 2 turnovers to 6 assists on decent shooting…

But yes, I agree.

We gotta get a real backup for Julius so we can fucking bench his ass on nights like this

Toppin is 5-5 and 2-2 tonight. He hasn’t done anything else, but he’d be a good backup in an energy unit.

Randle. 3 air balls or as Clyde says UFOs. And also just hit the backboard on an open straight on shot. Wow.

KBA, Knicks moved the collapse up to the second quarter to get it out of the way early. Now they seem committed to playing them even.

It’s Draft Bust Redemption night at MSG. If Cunningham and Hayes both shoot over 50% everyone gets a free taco

Probably too late but it might have been a good game to get McBride some minutes to provide some energy. Something they are really lacking so far.

We used to get more out of Frank on offense than we are getting from Grimes. It’s getting ugly.

Grimes needs to break out of his slump pretty soon. He’s a clear weak-link in the starting lineup.

Quickley is having one of his stinkers tonight.

They better pull this game out because Toronto gives the Knicks a lot of grief and we’ll be playing them on a back to back. We could easily lose two in a row if we lose this. Then we have the Bucks.

That last bucket by Randle was old Knicks offense. Brunson just said, “I’m tired. You take it.”

At least one of Grimes, IQ, DDV, or Hart is supposed to hit shots, right? C’Mon.

Mitch with the FTs!

We need to buck the awful home loss trend in the NBA tonight

Cavs lose to Blazers, Nets lose to Hornets

Looks like clyde is on board with the Divo over DDV moniker.

You win again milo. Happy?

Obviously not a big Jake the Snake Robert’s fan.

Do you know that snake used to bite him all the time

I went to a Smackdown show a couple of years ago, it was prior to Wrestlemania with Reigns and the Bloodline the main feature.

Hate Julius so much in this game and he’s 29-10-8. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

Hate Julius so much in this game and he’s 29-10-8. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

He had a few incredibly boneheaded/lazy plays in the 2nd quarter especially but overall he was excellent, it’s not his fault only one of his other teammates could score

I loved that all the Knicks on the floor yelled at Robinson to run down the other end of the court and not touch the ball off the inbound pass! No chance for the Pistons to foul him. Hack-a-Mitch is a thing.

Man, the Pacers cannot play a lick of defense. It’s embarrassing.

They put up a 40 point 1st quarter and were only up like 6 because of how inept they are.

Yeah, no passing to speak of tonight as far as I could tell (only saw second half). On such nights Julius scores all ISO and his line can sneak up on you.

As in previous seasons, it’s hard to tell whether the ugliness necessitates Randle scoring like that or if him scoring like that makes for such ugly basketball. 🙃

Nevertheless, we win and Brunson scores 40+!

With IQ, RJ and Grimes asleep tonight, Randle and Brunson deserve accolades. Allstars carry their teams. That’s what they both did.

Hey big blue – have you been to any pro-wrestling matches recently?

Been since the 90’s since I went. I definitely would like to go again.

Punk coming back to the WWE has definitely piqued my interest up. If MJF makes the jump in 2024, I might get reeled back in like I was in the Rock/Stone Cold era.

I was more excited to see Randy Orton return, easily my favorite wrestler of the past 20 years.

It’s not shocking the Pistons are bad but it’s kind of incredible that they are this bad.

I thought the Pistons played passably well tonight. They battled but lost to a better team in crunch time. But that’s not how they’ve been playing.

Obi 10-15 for 25 points. Also the only player to have a + (+6).
Glad he’s having some run, anyway…

I don’t know why Macky Sasser’s kid didn’t play more tonight. He was killing the Knicks.

The Bucks aren’t that scary anymore. The defense took a step back on the swap from Holiday to Lillard, Middleton is getting old. I think the coaching took a step back. They are still good, but right now they aren’t so much better than us we can’t take them. We’ll have to play better than tonight though.

That Pacers team is extremely Obi-very fun, great on offense and cannot stop anyone at all. They had the lead going into the 4th quarter, scored 32 points and lost by 10 to the Heat.

I’m too busy right now to tell the stories, but I was a huge wrestling fan when I was a kid. I used to go to Sunnyside Gardens in Queens to see live shows in the Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Gorilla Monsoon era. You guys will love these stories. I’ll tell you couple tomorrow.

“Well, missed the game. That thread was a journey.”

Mostly to the medicine cabinet. But all’s well that ends well!

I’m not getting the Cade hate at all…he’s like 1000 minutes into his non-rookie career. I mean, he doesn’t look anything like #1 pick material, but dude needs a bit more time before talking about him like he’s a total bust.

Hey super busy all the time person – how are you Cdiggy?

I hope the dad and hubbie stuff are all going well. And, work is not totally syphoning all the life out of your body 🙂

Edit: oh it’s geo cdiggy…i’ve decided to stop trying to fight against the mania…i’m embracing it now, hence the Euliss F. “Sonny” Dewey and Brother Love references…

Well, missed the game. That thread was a journey.

You missed a gimme game Owen. If I ever go see a game live – i’m making sure the other team coming out of the locker room is either the pistons, hornets or wiz.

Tonight was basically guaranteed game viewing satisfaction.

Guess I made the right choice skipping most of the 2nd half

Brunson could’ve beat these guys 1-on-5. Glad we escaped the trap game.

From the NYP, Monty Williams on Thibs:

“Still, the duo have worked together in recent years with Team USA, and Williams said Thursday night that Thibodeau was one of the people he leaned on after his wife, Ingrid, was killed in an auto accident in 2016.

“He’s one of the kind, more intentional people I’ve [known] since he’s been in the NBA. I enjoyed competing against him but I also enjoyed learning from him,” Williams said. “It’s real personal. I went through a really tough time with the loss of my family and he did something for me that had a huge impact on the healing process and getting through.

“He gave me something I had no idea he would give to me and I never forgot it. I still have it. You never know this brotherhood we have. I have a brotherhood of players, but I also have a brotherhood of coaching and Thibs is a big part of it.”

Kind of got me, just like the Mitch-HS coach story. Sort of balances out the Dolan nonsense. Sort of like how seeing Randle and his sons tempers my feelings towards him. Sort of how seeing Brunson and his yoda-looking self just torching the opposition just leaves me in amazement time after time.

This is a good time to be a Knicks fan.

Randle’s TS% just crept over .500. Unfortunately RJ is back into negative BPM territory. And Mitch is down to 0.2.

Didn’t catch the game, so it was nice to wake up to a win. 🙂 But it looks like we had to sweat a little. 😛

I also didn’t catch the Hornets game, but i loved that Knicks fans are not like the NBA… let the guy know he’s on probation!

Controversial Hornets star booed mercilessly by Knicks’ crowd

Miles Bridges, just a couple weeks removed from returning from a long and controversial absence, was booed enthusiastically by the MSG crowd.

According to Amick, if DeRozan is traded, he wants to go to one of two teams: the Heat or the Knicks.

What’s he worth?
