As long as we don’t see “Breaking News: Knicks Trade 19th Pick for Future Protected First” it’s good by me!

Thanks Mike. I think you doing all this on VI is a good omen, it’s the same software people used when the Knicks were winning championships.

We’re going to play the Bucks three times this month.

The NBA did something very weird. We play the Bucks in the first game on Christmas Day (12pm) two days after we play the Bucks in a Saturday matinee at the Garden.

Sat, Dec 23 vs Milwaukee 12:30 PM NBA TV
Mon, Dec 25 vs Milwaukee 12:00 PM ESPN

That ESPN piece on the Knicks’ lawsuit is really funny. And we wonder why no stars want to come here… it always comes back to Dolan’s out-of-touch entitlement. The end quote is perfect:

“I don’t really see a clear strategy. I think the attention is the desired outcome.”

I don’t see how anyone can look at the lawsuit as anything other than Dolan jumping at a chance to finally get some revenge on Masai Ujuri after he’s owned us for the past decade.

I don’t think players will be wary of the Knicks because of this lawsuit, but at the same time, they definitely don’t come off looking good in this lawsuit, either, even if maybe they’re kind of sort of on the “right” side of the dispute.

We aren’t going to kick rooting for a team with an officious, thin-skinned dipshit of an owner to the curb….

ESPN has never liked The Knicks.

So we’re right but Dolan shouldn’t sue because why exactly?

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Dolan might suck but if Toronto is in the wrong, why shouldn’t we sue if the league isn’t going to do anything about it?

    Small sample size theater…

Our best 4-man net rating combinations (minimum 8 mins*):

    1) Brunson, Barrett, IQ, iHart; net rating 51.7 in 14 mins
    2) Brunson, Barrett, IQ, Randle; net rating 42.2 in 19 mins

    Our best 5-man net rating:

    1) Brunson, Barrett, IQ, Randle, Robinson; net rating 48.2 in 12 mins
    2) Brunson, Barrett, DDV, Randle, Robinson; net rating 31.5 in 20 mins

    * I chose 8 minutes just to get rid of the Fournier lineups that were at the top of the list since we’re never going to use them.

Why the hell would any player or agent give a shit about that lawsuit? It’s not like Dolan is some unknown commodity.

    Players want to play:
-where they make the most money
-for teams/coaches that will use them in their desired role for the desired minutes
-for teams that have a chance to win
-in a place that they prefer to live

Which corporate douchebag owns the team is probably last on the list of things they consider, except to the degree that he influences the other things.

What I glean from that data…

If Grimes can fix whatever the hell is ailing him this year, we should expect a boost.

If he can’t fix, we can bench him, and we should expect a boost.

Either way, there’s cause for optimism.

Side rant, but I had to migrate everything from powershell to python/bash. On one hand python is annoying because you have to specifically include libraries. I don’t understand why if the function exists, it’s not smart enough to just find/call it?

On the other hand, I’m pleasantly surprised that you can easily find code and libraries to do whatever it is you’re looking for. I recall trying to parse files without fancy libraries built to do so, or a thousand other people giving examples/fixes for their code. Man I wish I had this kind of access to knowledge as a kid.

But it’s so much better not being able to move with the arrow keys and constantly forgetting which of the hjkl keys moves in which direction!!

mike.. if you haven’t already you should get on the chatgpt boat.. you hardly need to even know anything to code anymore….

I’m not worried about Grimes’ shooting. He missed a couple of practices and games and then had a rough patch in a small sample.

IMO, the bigger problem is that were counting on him to expand his game on offense. That doesn’t necessarily mean scoring a lot more. He’s not going to have a high usage as 4th option behind Brunson, Randle, and RJ. But there is no sign that he has improved his handle and shot making ability off the dribble. Instead he seems a bit gun shy to even try. At this stage he’s a more limited 3&D player. That’s not the end of the world. There’s a role for players like that. But when we have Mitch and Grimes together, it puts a bit of pressure on everyone else to create shots. We are probably winding up with tougher shots than if Grimes or Mitch were less limited. I think Grimes has to step it up to a new level or he’s the guy we’ll eventually need to upgrade.

On KFS, there was a brief discussion of Kyle Kuzma as a possible trade target. Thoughts?

    Extremely hard NO.

He’s a low basketball IQ clown that doesn’t play defense.

Yeah, kind of amazed that MacGowan made it this far. RIP.

But then again, Keith Richards still walks among us…

The loss of Rick Froberg back in July at 55 really sucked.

I think Grimes has to step it up to a new level or he’s the guy we’ll eventually need to upgrade.

I should add one more thing. I’m still not sold on RJ having grown into the permanent starting SG/SF role. He seems to have improved his FT shooting and ability to finish somewhat and he’s trying on defense a little more consistently, but he was coming from a pretty low base. I think we need to see another month of so of basketball to know where he is now on a more sustainable level.

And don’t forget Randle. I still think he’s not an ideal fit and gives up just as much with his ball holding, forced pass/TOs, driving into a brick wall TOs and lazy defense as he adds with his rebounding and scoring. I’d like to move on from him.

All that negatively said, our record is better than I thought it would be.

mike.. if you haven’t already you should get on the chatgpt boat.. you hardly need to even know anything to code anymore….

    Is that so? 🤔

Ask ChatGPT for a Python script to download google news for the New York Knicks for the day, and export each item as a list in HTML with a title, summary, and link.

Let me know what you get in return.

Dolan might suck but if Toronto is in the wrong, why shouldn’t we sue if the league isn’t going to do anything about it?

Swifty, the problem I have is that there has never been any indication that the league wouldn’t do anything about it. They never went to the league. It is just another example of Dolan over-reacting with needless antagonism when he feels wronged. In this case it is Adam Silver, rather than a former player, a season-ticket holder, or a fan in the stands. Where is the upside by telling the world that he cannot trust Adam Silver to be unbiased. Will that be helpful next time Leon tampers with a FA and the association has to decide what to do?

There also isn’t any evidence that Toronto did anything wrong. The info they supposedly stole is all publicly available.

If it’s publicly available…I guess the msrp on it is 10 million…that’s the damages they want…

    Players want to play:
-where they make the most money

In a league with a maximum salary cap, this precludes no one.

-for teams/coaches that will use them in their desired role for the desired minutes

    The owner chooses the management.

-for teams that have a chance to win

If there’s no causation between Dolan owning a team and not having a chance to win, then causation doesn’t exist in the 4th dimension.

-in a place that they prefer to live

Yeah, but who wants to even live in the same city as James Dolan? At least Steinbrenner had the good sense to run the Yankees from Tampa.

RJ is currently having his worst 2fg% of his career, which is saying something.

His % of attempts within 3ft are at a career low of .285, down from last year’s .299.

He’s shifted those shots to the midrange where he’s been egregiously bad—hitting only 15% of his shots from 10-16ft and 25% from 17-3pt. He’s never been good at those shots (29.4% and 32.4% for his career, respectively) but those numbers should come up a bit.

it’s going to be hard to post actual code snippets here.. but i just got some decent results if you want to try for yourself….. and then ask chatgpt to refine or refine it yourself…

i hardly know how to code and this is what i do for real basic stuff…. if you don’t get the exact right answer you generally do eventually get to one using their output…

RJ has been having issues since he came back… mostly relying on iso shots which have been not good… and is concerning… if he gets back to what he was doing before.. .which was playing off of others he’ll be fine…. but that remains to be seen….

Post-migraine RJ is shooting ~35% inside the arc and 30% outside. He’s still hitting 88% of his FTs in that span.

Pre-migraine RJ was shooting ~48% inside the arc (would be his 2nd best season after last year) and 50% on 3s. His ft% was 85%.

He’s also gone from 3apg to 1.6apg, less than his 1.8TOs during that stretch.

    So yeah, it’s been drastic

I hate VI more than PJ Brown. Nano is my *nix text editor of choice.

    Nothing like old rivalries 🤣

Be patient, it can take a few months to get your legs back after a migraine injury.

I don’t think RJ was going to shoot 50% from 3 point territory all season before he was stricken by migraines

I don’t know how to explain it but he looks much more sluggish since coming back. Like Old RJ.

Even that big and-1 he had against the Heat he seemed to take the blow rather than delivering it. Other guys seem to power through contact much better.

We will see. The FTs are big because they might actually be showing something.

Sadly it feels like we’re simply witnessing RJ turning back into RJ, with his boosters being gifted the whole “he was all set to make the leap before he got a headache, just wait until year six” thing. Hope I’m wrong.

Re: the lawsuit, the Knicks huffed and puffed about “proprietary information” early on but everything I’ve seen indicates the employee basically just saved himself a couple of extra steps in accessing stuff anyone with a Synergy subscription can access. When James Dolan is doing something unusual, you can safely assume he’s being a petty asshole.

“Somewhat better RJ” was always going to be a more realistic outcome than “way way better RJ” so I’ll take whatever improvement I can get

having read the most of the docket, my guess is that azotam did take some stuff that will turn out to seem more proprietary than just minor work product like synergy video compilations. the knicks haven’t been very specific yet; i am partly reading into what toronto did not say or said with convenient ambiguity in characterizing the materials in its answer and its motion to compel arbitration. but the knicks did clearly claim it is more than just synergy files, and toronto seemed to concede this, albeit obliquely.

this does not imply that the federal lawsuit is the most sensible way to address the situation.

RJ’s TS, BPM, 3pt% and ft% all career highs. His shot motion genuinely looks better.

Half the people on KB: enough with this, we’re traumatized by his previous years.

    Droll.

I’m sure there are sone nuances between why our 4 free agents (Brunson, Hartenstein, Hart (he was set to be a UFA), and DiVincenzo) voluntarily chose to sign here, but my guess is that none of them chose to sign here because a) they hated James Dolan and b) there were no other alternatives. Although in one case, maybe a 5th reason is necessary…
-for a team that hires your sleazy blood relative

(In case you were wondering, no, I didn’t misspell Troll)

It will shock you all to find out that Holmes could not find any subject matter expert who thinks this has much of any merit, but found many who think it’s basically trolling.

But then again, Keith Richards still walks among us…

Keith partied with the good stuff. Stringer doesn’t cut that package.

In case you were wondering, no, I didn’t misspell Troll

I relish my role as the Droll Troll.

It will shock you all to find out that Holmes could not find any subject matter expert who thinks this has much of any merit, but found many who think it’s basically trolling.

That’s as biased a piece of writing as you will ever see. Holmes barely tried to hide his agenda. If anyone is trolling, it’s him.

Sorry but you can’t just yada yada emailing work information to your gmail account and bringing it with you to a competitor. That’s a significant offense.

Over next three games, they’re hosting Pistons, Raptors and then a tournament game @ Bucks. Think most would agree that the base case is 2:1 which puts them at 12:8 at the first 20 game mark.

Considering they delt with a historically bad Randle, tough schedule and other less material issues, (i.e. Migranes, Grimes, DDV, Hart), – 12:8 is pretty much where I thought they would end up. Wonder what others think.

It will shock you all to find out that Holmes could not find any subject matter expert who thinks this has much of any merit, but found many who think it’s basically trolling.

This is the question I would ask.

I pay for past performance and result data from the Daily Racing Form. That’s the data I use to create my horse racing database. All that DRF data is available to the public (for a fee).

However, I use that data to create stats, metrics and reports that only I have. That’s value added work and information I share with no one except a couple of very good friends.

Without knowing anything about the Knicks case, IMO there’s a difference between having Synergy data anyone can get and having value added data you created from it.

So what was it he was taking to Toronto?

    Wonder what others think.

    I’ll talk after game-20… and I’ve a lot to say… 😉

    P.S.
The game with the Raptors will be in Toronto

I’d think that the Knicks don’t entirely know what the Raptors took, but that should come up in discovery assuming Toronto didn’t purge it all from their system.

So it’s probably an open question as to what exactly he took and to what extent it’s prosecutable.

And it’s not just trade secrets, there could be issues with the NDA and copyright if there were any notes attached to the documents.

And we just have no idea what will be considered a trade secret, the article quotes a bunch of people saying the case is “unprecedented” in a way that makes you think the Knicks are acting crazy, which is the colloquial meaning, but that’s not what it means in this context. The term means that there’s no prior legal cases that could help guide a judge’s decision.

In short, we have no idea whether the Knicks have a shot at winning

This (from the Holmes article) is, I think, the proper summary of the saga:

“You can’t do what [Azatom] did,” a third Western Conference executive told ESPN. “It’s one thing to bring a copy of your work. But he took stuff that was beyond that.

When I first read the lawsuit, I said ‘Well, the Knicks aren’t wrong, but why are they doing this?'”

having read the most of the docket,

not my place to inquire – if you would like to indulge though: was that work related reading, or just like idle curiousity?

understand that while your answer may mean nothing, it will still mean sooooooo much…

No doubt The Sphere in Las Vegas is a half click away from Raptors/Knicks lawsuit in web search hierarchy.

This is not some random james dolan emotional meltdown moment. There is much more going on here.

Knicks schedule is absolutely brutal in December. It lightens up big time in January so if they can remain above .500 at the end of December they’ll be poised to make they’re usual late season run under Thibs and finish where most would expect in the high 40’s maybe even reaching 50 wins.

Right now in December the Knicks have 3 home games and 10 road games pending what happens at Milwaukee on Tuesday.

I have genuine empathy for Ike Azotam in all this. He is a 32 y/o former pro basketball player from Nigeria who just started his post-playing career in 2020.

I’m just guessing here, but I suspect he did nothing with malicious intent. It strikes me as a mistake so stupid that only someone who didn’t know what they were doing would make.

I made the same stupid mistake when I was 24. I emailed my work to my personal account so I’d have it if I went to another firm. Then I went on an interview with another firm and they were like “dude, what are you stupid or something?”

That’s how I learned! I couldn’t undo the fact that I had already emailed it to myself. But I never used it in my next job.

If I had to guess, that’s what happened here. I seriously doubt the Raptors asked him to do this, or even wanted the information.

I made the same stupid mistake when I was 24. I emailed my work to my personal account so I’d have it if I went to another firm. Then I went on an interview with another firm and they were like “dude, what are you stupid or something?”

It depends on what kind of work you were emailing to yourself and what your employment contact said but generally there’s no law against this.

not my place to inquire – if you would like to indulge though: was that work related reading, or just like idle curiousity?

impure curiosity geo. i was a lawyer for about a week two lifetimes ago and pulling up dolan beef on pacer is my idea of fun.

I can say from some level of experience that judges tend not to look fondly upon lawsuits that might have some de minimis, letter-of-the-law merit but realistically are never brought. There may well be some work product clause violation here if the contract is construed painfully literally that the industry, besides Dolan, has tacitly agreed to ignore.

My best guess is this ends with a decision awarding the Knicks nominal damages, but with dicta that rakes Dolan and co. over the coals.

The nice thing about hating James Dolan is that I’m happy regardless of how this turns out
