So, let’s see if i got this right, the Spurs have the tallest player in the league and they have a PG that is taller than all Knicks PFs. Is that it? The west is big, man.
A few years ago I didn’t think Pop was going to stick around for the rebuild, and I didn’t think he can do it again. Smarts AND luck are a good combination, isn’t it.
Looks like him and Riley are the class of this league GMs over the past 4 decades.
I’m glad I don’t have the Suns in my futures bets, but surprisingly I was able to add the 76ers at a good price the other day.
It’s been 5 games and Wembanyama is already must watch entertainment, this kid is unreal.
I can only imagine what Spurs fans are feeling right now.
I have pretty deep seeded resentment for the Spurs. I hope this ends badly for them.
I can’t feel bad about Manu’s team succeeding.
It was pretty hilarious. Someone switched on to Wenbanyama yesterday who was about 9 inches shorter than him. He just ran straight to the rim for an alley oop.
Huge game but his box score numbers don’t look great so far and he won’t play the Suns every night. The defense does look good already tthough. He’s going to need a year at least I think to be a real star but he is a fun watch right now.
I will never get over losing the 99 finals to the team that shamelessly tanked their way to Tim Duncan. The franchise has had like 4 bad seasons in 40 years and in two of them they got Duncan and Wemby.
More importantly, their owner has been the driving force behind the small-market cartel that makes the rules that hold large markets back.
I want them to get fucked hard.
One of his passes yesterday was Jokic like, he’s so tall he sees above everyone. Also whenever he’s around the basket he’s open, because he just shoots layups above you.
https://www.boxscoregeeks.com/articles/the-myth-of-the-tanking-spurs
One of Wemby’s most devastating attributes is his ability to catch the ball. It doesn’t matter where he is on the court or how many people are guarding him— you can always lob him an “entry pass” that nobody else can get to. It doesn’t even need to be particularly accurate, just has to have a high enough arc on it so he can get to it first. This happened several times in yesterday’s game. The ballhandler would have nowhere to go, his dribble contained, then he’d just say “ehh whatever” and throw up a moonball in Wemby’s direction. Most of the time it ends up in a layup or dunk. Sometimes this happens when there are several defenders who are making a futile attempt to deny him the ball.
It is practically impossible to front him, and he catches everything you throw in his direction.
Any update on RJ’S knee? He tweaked it on a dunk play a couple of games back. I hope it’s not a small tear.
There was a stretch in the fourth quarter yesterday where he really looked like Calvin Johnson in those Lions teams, the Spurs players were just hoofing it high to him on the paint and he would catch everything. That’s the scary thing, you don’t need to be a particularly great shooter when every shot you take is effectively open because nobody is tall enough to contest you.
Any update on RJ’S knee? He tweaked it on a dunk play a couple of games back. I hope it’s not a small tear.
the current soreness that sidelined him is his left knee; the dunk where derrick white stupidly fouled him from behind was his right knee.
Seen that before, gkhenman. It’s a very poor essay that fails to support its thesis. The Spurs tanked shamelessly; it’s not a myth.
That’s actually good news.
The Spurs went into that season expecting to compete for the championship. They “tanked” by breaking David Robinson’s foot. If I’m missing something, please explain.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996%E2%80%9397_San_Antonio_Spurs_season
Next people will be saying Hinkie was an excellent GM.
Didn’t the Spurs sign Dominique Wilkins during that season? He was a shell of his former self but at least was worth still watching.
They quit competing when Robinson got hurt. A 59 win team became a 20 win team when they lost their best player. It was shameless and pathetic.
A year later when Ewing was out for the year we still made the playoffs and John Starks actually said “we were never gonna quit like san antonio”.
Hubert, can’t we just celebrate that Durant is the centerpiece of another team that gave up the world to get him and is now going to totally suck relative to expectations?
Yes, they signed Dominique that offseason. He had a pretty good season that year averaging 18 points a game. They lost Chuck Person, Charles Smith and Sean Elliott to injuries. They sucked, but they weren’t going to win with all those injuries. They did not throw the season for a 20% chance at Duncan.
James Harden: “I am not a system player. I am a system.”
I would love to see Durant fail in Phoenix this year and demand to be traded.
Not so fun fact: Quentin Grimes has played 118 minutes and has one free throw attempt, which he missed.
The Elliott injury was one of those “go ahead and have that offseason surgery now since we don’t actually want to win” deals.
Dude, that team won 59 games in ‘96. I know David Robinson is great but he ain’t worth 40 wins.
No one claims they kept Robinson out on purpose to lose. They just folded up and quit when he got hurt.
And it was the smart thing to do. I don’t blame them for it. I just resent that it was karmically rewarded. We were in the same exact position a year later and chose to compete. If any team deserved some karma, it was us.
They quit competing when Robinson got hurt. A 59 win team became a 20 win team when they lost their best player. It was shameless and pathetic.
That is not wrong but also not 100% correct. Robinson got hurt in the pre-season and they proceeded to go 3-15 without him and fired the coach. I highly doubt they started the season trying to tank. When Robinson came back and broke his foot he was supposed to be out another 6 weeks. At the 6 week point they were 11-34. Robinson never came back. So at some point after he broke his foot they went into tank mode, if only by deciding not to bring Robinson back.. But if you have a combination of a big man, significant foot injury, MVP talent level when healthy, and an extremely unlikely chance to make the playoffs even if you play lights out, one could argue the behaviour was more cautious rather than shameless and pathetic.
Almost as though there isn’t any such thing as karma when it comes to drafting generational basketball prospects, only the cold vagaries of probability. Shame that the Spurs happened to maximize those hyper-effectively during the highest leverage moments in the last 30 years, while we’ve done the exact opposite. In that span they’ve now drafted 3 players better than any to have ever played for our franchise.
Knicks were 15-11 when Ewing got hurt and they were considered to be underachieving big time considering they were coming off a 57-25 season then added Dudley and Chris Mills to improve the bench. I remember alot of Allan Houston for Mitch Richmond trade rumors at the time but then Ewing got hurt and Houston wound up basically carrying the offense.
Being angry about the Spurs landing Duncan and ruining the Knicks chance of backing their way into an asterisk-laden championship 25 years later is a nice way to spend a Friday.
The thing I remember being angry about at the time was ex-Knick Bob Hill getting fired that year, despite winning 59 games the year before and being a victim of all the injuries. And Popovich, the GM and President at the time, fired him and replaced him with himself, only to revert back to contention and enjoy 25 years of success. It was very Dick Cheney of him.
If the Spurs title in 1999 deserves an asterisk I assume so does the Heat in 2012, Lakers in 2020 and Bucks in 2021?
I have been repeatedly informed that tanking does not work.
Yup, just another team that will move ahead of the Knicks shortly.
I’m starting to believe E’s “mezzanine” hype. In fact, I think we’ll be lucky to stay out of the nosebleeds this year.
Our best players are struggling for real reasons. Yes, I do think Randle is still working his way back from injury, but even at his best, he’s simply an average (at best) shooting PF with SF height who is an “okay” defender (also at best). Brunson is a great creator but is incredibly small and not exactly a top athlete. And aside from his awesome ability to get knocked down, he is an awful defender.
Both those guys are great complimentary players on great contracts, but aren’t generational talents like Wemby or even guys like the Thompsons who have very high ceilings.
So everything is riding on that 1A, generational star demanding a trade to the Dolan-owned, Thibs-led Knicks? In a ridiculously expensive city with gloomy winters? Sorry, I don’t see it.
“Everybody just needs to have a career year” is not a real sustainable model for building a contender.
Apparently not as much fun as defending the honor of the besmirched ‘97 Spurs.
I’m glad there are no overreactions to starting the season 2-3….
Time for your friendly reminder of the “list” put together at roughly this time last season where it was noted by TNFH and others that teams like the Spurs — maybe not the Spurs exactly, but it’s beside the point and I’m not going back and looking — while not looking very good were still denominated better suited for championship contention because they had a likely high 2023 lottery pick coming and the Knicks … well, the Knicks didn’t.
Now we’re starting to see why those rankings were what they were. Unfortunately, there was some wavering as the Knicks good year unfolded and … well ….
Would you rather be the Spurs or the Knicks now?
Pretty sure on Heatblogger and Sunsblogger they’ve thrown in the towel on this season.
Bucksblogger might have a meltdown if the Bucks lose again tonight!
Lakers 2020 5 asterisks.
Bucks 2021 and San Antonio 1999 2 asterisks.
Miami 2012 1 asterisk.
maybe not the Spurs exactly, but it’s beside the point..,Would you rather be the Spurs or the Knicks now?
No that is exactly the point. Four to five teams visibly tanked to get Wemby. We could have been that fifth or sixth team. I’d rather be the Spurs but not the other teams, but the odds are us as one of the other teams. Good try tho.
Yeah, I’d rather have Wembanyama, but I’d also rather be the Knicks instead of the Pistons, who were terrible two years in a row and landed the 5th pick both years.
From what I can tell Cade Cunningham is still dogshit.
I wanted a teardown when Leon took over, and I don’t see much of a contender future with this roster, but since that’s never happening, I’ll just enjoy the wins and the comptetive basketball while we have them!
Some bizarrely interesting posting today. I’m in the North Country for the last weekend of my kid’s volleyball career. Probably won’t see much of the game tonight. Keep the shit flying!
Orlando, Houston, and Detroit have done admirable jobs tanking, but I’m not seeing any surefire generational talent on those teams.
Orlando has come away with 2 excellent players in Banchero and Wagner. But are they good enough to get out of the mezzanine? I’m not sold on it.
Raptors 2019 4 asterisks. There’s no way in hell they beat a healthy Warriors team in the Finals.
I feel like the hype train pulled out of the station real quick on Banchero. I don’t know, not sure I see him being an elite guy. Wagner seems solid but also doesn’t seem like a future All-Star.
Some say Rockets 2 titles should have an asterisk cause of MJ’s retirement even though he did return at the end of the 1995 season.
But regardless I would’ve been so fucking ecstatic if the Knicks had won the 1994 NBA Finals…
The only other team to visibly tank going into the season was the Jazz by dumping their two stars. But they got too much in return and accidentally contended.
The Thunder also accidentally contended because their youngsters improved faster than intended.
The Pistons and Rockets didn’t visibly tank, they just didn’t have many good players to try to compete with.
The Spurs were the only other team to trade their star going into the season, and they were careful not to get good players in return. That’s just good tanking practice. They deserved the big prize.
Injuries and retirements happen, it’s part of the game every season.
The abbreviated seasons, where they only play 50 games, or they play without fans, or they have to all move in together and aren’t allowed to play if they order takeout. Those are the asterisk seasons.
Thanks Donnie,
I was writing exactly the same things 😀
To me, asterisk’s are for players stats, not teams. Win the trophy in front of you.
To get this team back on the right track one of either RJ or Randle has to go. They don’t fit together, especially with Mitch and Brunson (who would also be better in space). I’ve been going back and forth on which one because Randle has given us much better current production but RJ’s best (whatever that is) is head of him and extends the window. 5 Games is meaningless from either, but Randle is just too frustrating for me to tolerate and keep some level of mental health. It’s time to move Randle. I don’t care if we have to take a small step back. Just move Randle already.
I lot of what happens is simply luck and has nothing to do with planning.
Strat is so obviously a horse guy. Your big ride comes up a bit lame, shoot the damn thing!
This is Breeder’s Cup weekend. I have so much gambling action I have no time for moody, inconsistent, PFs that don’t fit anyway. 🙂
How much better would this team be if it had 2012-14 Melo instead of Randle?
We would be the best team in the East with Charles Smith….
I kid. Randle appears to be playing good defense so far at least. No one ever accused Melo of that.
But yes, Randle, mastiff sized shitpile.
If anyone else will be at the KFS watch party at Penn 6 tonight, come say hi!
Just read Katz’s musings on Randle, more or less echoing ours. Probably injury related/lack of readiness due to the offseason, but Owen nicely paraphrased Katz’s numerical summary (mastiff-sized…).
Doesn’t leave me thrilled to death about the game today.
I was in college in San Antonio with Bob Hill’s son at the time (who was a dick) and I remember thinking it was funny that his dad got fired and was being replaced by the idiot GM who had traded Denis Rodman for Will Purdue
RJ out
i don’t think james harden was being a dick when he said: I am a system
he just sounds like a self-serving dick when he speaks…
lol what is this “in-season tournament” that happens 6 days into the season
hahahah
