Knicks 2023 Preseason Game Thread: Knicks @ Celtics

The Knicks are visiting the Celtics, and the Celtics are actually playing their stars tonight, so let’s hope that the Knicks still kick their asses.

The reason it’s so stupid to let good players walk for nothing is because there’s almost always a market for good players, even if they’re overpaid in some sense.

Good NBA players are just too scarce of a commodity for most contenders to look at them and say “well I’d like [X good player], but he’s paid too much.” This is why D’Angelo Russell keeps getting traded for value on contracts people think suck.

So yeah, whether it’s Mitch or Quickley, I’d much sooner “overpay” to keep a good player than lose him for nothing. It would’ve been very stupid to lose Mitch for nothing for this reason—he’s clearly sought after by other teams, and color me skeptical that would change even if he made $20M AAV.

JB, Julius, RJ, IQ and J-Hart all sit tonight,
sorry guys but I’ll watch the condensed game tomorrow.

This is good chance to see if Grimes has made any improvements in his game. He won’t be 4th option in this lineup.

Plenty of playing time for the Celtic killer! 😀

We’ll get to see if any of our 3rd string PFs can separate themselves from the pack

RJ sitting, I’m watching…

“The reason it’s so stupid to let good players walk for nothing is because there’s almost always a market for good players, even if they’re overpaid in some sense.”

Right. There is such a thriving market for Evan Fournier. As there was for Alec Burks.

“It would’ve been very stupid to lose Mitch for nothing for this reason—he’s clearly sought after by other teams, and color me skeptical that would change even if he made $20M AAV.”

This is also silly. Mitch at $20M AAV on a 4-year guaranteed deal is not a plus asset. Sure, you can include him in a trade, but so what? As it turned out, you saved $20M in cap space, and even better if you look at the terms of his contract…you saved $7M in cap space in the final year, and because you took the risk of losing him, as it turns out, he has immensely more value than he did.

So risking losing him was incredibly smart. When you do that, of course, there’s a chance you will lose him! Seems like you clearly wouldn’t have done that, and as such, would have restricted the team’s cap space out of fear of doing something “stupid.” It’s almost Steve Mills-level thinking…. “Just pay guys what they want, because if you don’t you might lose him for nothing!”

So our first preseason game against is Tom was our starter against their B team and now it’s our B team against our B team.

I AM loving this game though. I don’t care about the game per se, even against the hateful Celtics. I want to see the kids get some run, including Grimes. Deuce is looking, well, good enough — nice drive inside, bad pass, but something.

Just nice to see the bench running around without one eye on Thibs, waiting for the hook.

And just like that, Deuce fucks up like a fourth grader.

Grimes is the only Knick with a positive plus minus at this moment in this game.

I just happened to flip to Knicks halftime and Julius Randle comes across as a really likable dude and at peace with himself.

Good to see.

They were good players when they were signed. We got virtually nothing for Burks, and nobody wants Fournier.

When you were eager to sign Mitch for up to $20M AAV for a guaranteed 4 years to make sure we didn’t lose him for nothing, he had just missed most of the previous season and was coming off foot surgery…the bad kind.

This is good chance to see if Grimes has made any improvements in his game. He won’t be 4th option in this lineup.

It was likely he’d get some extra shots up tonight with the other scorers out and it’s always nice to see the 3 pointers dropping. But I really haven’t seen anything I didn’t already know he could do. I’d like to see a little more shot creation off the dribble.

I think Grimes is getting his shot off faster than he did last year.

He’s lightning fast. The defender can’t leave him alone for a second because he won’t have time to recover. That’s great for spacing. I love him, but I was hoping to see a little more handle. We need someone to take a huge step up. Still a great night for him.

“Not able to finish…”

That’s like a professional death knell in the preseason.

Leaders for spots 13-15 on the roster:
Roby
Jeffries
Archie (he really isn’t an NBA player, but you know, ‘nova and all…)

I don’t see any chance of Knight, Toppin, Brown Jr., Martin, Windler, or Wash Jr. making the roster. If I had to pick one, it would be Knight, but whatever.

I hope they are monitoring the waiver wire carefully this week, someone with upside will almost certainly be cut by someone…

Deuce should be at least a situational weapon, he’s really a vicious on ball defender on a team that doesn’t have a ton of that.
