I so wish this season would start already. I want to see who has developed, by how much, and where we are in the pecking order.

All in on Winning Time after two episodes. And I haven’t even gotten to Adrien Brody as Pat Riley.

Side note: I hope there is a three-episode arc in the final season dramatizing the creation and demise of The Magic Hour, an unparalleled train wreck I feel privileged to have witnessed.

For the basketball starved, I’ll continue to make my pitch for the Liberty. This is not me trying guilt trip people or whatever–I watch Liberty games because I am a basketball enjoyer and the quality of basketball is genuinely quite high. I think other basketball enjoyers would feel the same way.

Ran into Breanna Stewart yesterday morning. She was very nice and happily took a selfie with my stupidly starstruck self.

The Liberty are great. Have been following them for a few years and was able to catch a game at Barclays earlier in the year. Tickets are very affordable and really not a bad seat in the house since they don’t open the upper levels. It’s easy to pick up the ins-and-outs of the league since there only 12 teams. Would second that recommendation.

To give you an idea about how out-of-date I am on the Liberty, kburt8’s comment got me wondering why the hell are they playing at the Barclay Center when the owner of the team also owns MSG. And now I am not so sure I want to root for a sister team of the Nets.

The only positive thing I learned was that Isiah Thomas is no longer involved.

ESPN Plus is releasing staff predictions on the upcoming season. Today was EC standings. It’s behind a pay wall so I’ll just share them:

    1. Boston – 55 wins
    2. Milwaukee – 54
    3. Cleveland – 50
    4. Philadelphia – 47
    5. Miami – 46
    6. New York – 46
    7. Atlanta – 41
    8. Brooklyn – 39
    9. Indiana – 38
    10. Orlando – 38

It’s a tough conference. I like Orlando and Indiana a lot, and they’re bringing up the rear.

I’m inclined to swap Philadelphia and Boston. I think this Harden stuff is mostly noise and Nick Nurse will do a great job there. With Boston I’m just counting on Porzingis to get hurt and Jaylen Brown to be satisified.

I’ll save my opinion on the Knicks for the official thread.

    not a terrible list…

maybe atlanta with a couple of extra wins, celts and bucks with a couple less…

we may have 8 teams in the conference winning around 50 games (plus/minus 4)…let’s beat up on the west…

our number seems fair…is there a betting line yet for the season reference team wins?

ESPN anti NYK bias on display, – as expected. They are what we thought they were. To publish that this Knick team is worse in ’24 season than in ’23 season is blasphemy.

ESPN Plus is releasing staff predictions on the upcoming season.

This is a very difficult exercise because some of these teams could look drastically different by opening day.

I feel like they’re overrating Boston, and Philly, even as currently constructed, is an aging team that will really need Maxey to grow up fast. Miami is also aging/weakened… although if they get Dame, they should be near the top of the East. Assuming they do get Dame, this is my list:

    1. Milwaukee – 54 wins
    2. Miami – 53
    3. Boston – 50
    4. New York – 49
    5. Cleveland – 47
    6. Philadelphia – 46

And since I’m a little chatterbox today, a couple of late entrants to the “songs where the use of saxophone didn’t suck”…

I was listening to David Bowie’s Blackstar album and the first two tracks (‘Tis a Pity She Was a Whore, Lazarus) make the cut for me.

And ‘Tis a Pity reminded me a bit of Radiohead’s National Anthem, which also made some good use of the saxophone.

That list feels like teams fall into two categories: Gets its shit together (Boston, NY, Atlanta, Cleveland), and Aging out (Bucks, Philly, Miami).

For us (and maybe Boston) it’s more Keep its shit together.

You could argue Miami is more Keep its shit together than Aging out, but with Love and Lowry (and Jimmy is 33, although zero reason to think he’ll have serious decline issues in the near future), aging is a concern.

Now I’m a) talking to myself, and b) listening to Subterraneans bc I just remembered how great Bowie’s sax is on that one.

Seems like pretty much every time I post here, I’m talking to myself.

I don’t see Philadelphia aging out. And I think people are really sleeping on the impact of the new coach bump they’ll get replacing Rivers with Nurse. It’s not quite Fizdale-to-Thibs but Rivers really sucked and Nurse is fantastic. Harden should eventually figure out there is no nine-figure contract waiting for him if he tanks this team. And I just love Tyrese Maxey. They’re a big bet-the-over for me.

I think it’s a near certainty that Philly trades Harden to the WC and Miami trades for Dame. Assuming that happens, here are my not even half-baked hot takes:

    Cleveland 55-27
Mobley is a year older, Garland too. I like the moves they made…picking up minivan and Strus…they probably have the best 9-man rotation in the conference. They have a chip on their shoulder. Look out!

    Milwaukee 53-29
Giannis has a bounceback year, Middleton returns somewhat to form, Jrue is Jrue, and the rest of the supporting cast does their thing. But their lack of depth and age requires lots of load management. They’ll win 2 of every 3 games.

    Boston 52-30
They’ll continue to win games on the backs of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but KP will continue to be injury-prone and maddening as always even when healthy. They will sorely miss Marcus Smart in the locker room.

    Knicks 48-34
Roughly the same as last year except more balanced across the year (i.e. fewer winning streaks).

    Miami 46-36
The cost of Lillard is so high that they lack depth and will take time to gel. Dame and Butler aren’t spring chickens and will require load management. They will not care about home court in the playoffs, so long as they stay out of the play-in.

    Philly 45-37
Embiid gets you over .500 by himself but the supporting cast will not be very good and Nick Nurse is overrated. They will suck in the 20 games Embiid misses.

    Brooklyn 42-40
I really like their young core and they will be very entertaining. Will probably lose lots of close games….but could be the surprise team of the division if they make a big move.

    Indiana 42-40
Scrappy, young teams, but I’m not a believer in them being anything much above a .500 team.

    Atlanta 41-41
They are a team without an identity but with some possible breakout potential from young players and pretty good depth. Very tough call.

    Chicago 39-43
Enough talent to win some games, not enough to get above .500.

    Toronto 36-46
Their roster is kind of at a crossroads. I doubt that their new coach can do much to fix things. Miss the play-in but win plenty of games with their waves of long wings.

Orlando, Detroit , Washington and Charlotte will all be in the lottery.

it’s always of value to have a honest conversation with oneself…really, who else do you have during your time here…start to finish, there you are along for the ride…

what important conversations are there that should be had, for instance?

it’s okay to break from the normal script…what do you have doogie?

    share, we all shall listen…

please note: normal participation during off-season time is pretty much about a dozen of us…

look, you’re right there with “us”…how cool is that, right?

what important conversations are there that should be had, for instance?

Should ketchup ever be put on a hot dog?

Knicks win between 53 & 57 games; end as a top three seed.
Don’t really care to guesstimate where others finish.

i’ve been scoring my dogs lately…along with a good bun, takes the whole experience to the next level…

i’m normally a spicy brown guy, but, basic yellow for my hot dogs…

I’m probably one of the lone yups on the ketchup question, and I think Obi puts the Pacers on his strangely inflexible hips and carries them into the playoffs.

I think they’re pretty far off, at least based on the teams as currently constituted.

Boston lost two key players and added one who is superior but often hurt. Can they bank on a full season of KP? History says No. As well, Horford is OLD. Jaylen may respond to the huge contract by playing like a man possessed…or he may choke, feeling the weight of the pressure. Not to mention that Brogdan is often hurt. A lot of questions there. I guess I’d have to still give them 52, because Tatum is consistently good and doesn’t miss time. But it isn’t a lock.

Milwaukee is also OLD OLD OLD. Again, gotta give them 50+ because Giannis is generally so solid, but he’s coming back from a knee injury and they have a new coach. All things considered, though, my guess is they have a good regular season and win 54, tops in the East.

Cleveland at 50? Well, ok. They got a little better, they added some experience. Really, I could see them at 52. Would not be surprised if they finished ahead of Boston.

Philly: the Harden situation is toxic, Embiid can’t play all the games, Maxey can’t carry the team. I could see this team topping out at 45 wins easily. But more nuts by far is Miami at 46. Again, as currently constituted, no way. That team barely squeaked into the playoffs and lost two key contributors. Butler, like Embiid, often misses games. No matter how great Spo is, the regular season is a grind, and you can’t strategize to maximize your results the way you can in the playoffs. He just doesn’t have enough to work with. So 42 is generous, and I wouldn’t balk at 40 as the line.

I think a good number of the extra wins go to NY and Indiana. NY I see at 50 – roughly our Josh Hart pace. We’re more vulnerable without Obi, but Randle is generally a horse, and IQ can cover if Brunson misses time. So I think we take a small step forward. And Indiana with a full season with its current group under Carlisle is also going to take a step. I could see 42 wins for them.

I don’t see Orlando surpassing 38 at best. Brooklyn may be a game or two better, but they have a pretty hard ceiling. Atlanta is the real question mark – I’m not sure where to put them. So I’ll say fine to 41, but I could see 38 or 48. No idea.

Orlando, Detroit , Washington and Charlotte will all be in the lottery.

You may be right about where they ultimately finish, but these teams are not as bad as everyone thinks.

Orlando and Detroit both have quality young players and added more lottery talent. Orlando was playing better later in the season. They both should be better teams with more experience, but Orlando could surprise on the upside.

Charlotte was missing Miles Bridges and LaMelo Ball for most of the season, added Brandon Miller and should be better.

The Wizards are not going to be quite as bad as everyone thinks. They lost KP and Beal, but Beal and Delon Wright didn’t play a lot, they added a desperately needed quality PG in Ty Jones and added Gallinari.

There are no automatic wins in the east anymore.

Much as I don’t see Orlando better than 38 or so, how can you have Chicago ahead of them?

And again, my placement is based on no Dame or Beard trades. They may happen, but neither is a lock, and we have to go on current information.

I like the future of Orlando and Detroit. And I think they will be competitive in most games. Just need more data and seasoning before I can take them seriously.

I think CHI and TOR are equally purgatorial, in E parlance. Neither has much immediate upside, but both have not committed to a rebuild. CHI extended Vuc and TOR extended Poeltl, and to me, those are the guys who you should absolutely NOT extend given where they are.

So for now, CHI has a starting lineup of LaVine, DeRozan, Vucevic, White, and P Williams, with a bench of Caruso, Dosomnu, Craig, Carter and Drummond. That’s a decent rotation with a decent big 3 and several solid vets. Unless they have a fire sale at the deadline or LaVine goes down, they are NOT going to finish behind the intriguing but still raw Magic.

Someone said it and I’ll +1 it, there will be a lot of roster changes before opening night tip-off. I think the Knicks starting 5 of Brunson, RJ, Grimes, Randle and Embid will win way more than 46 games. 🙂

Someone said it and I’ll +1 it, there will be a lot of roster changes before opening night tip-off.

For awhile I thought the Lillard and Harden situations were holding some other deals up, but at this point, I’m not sure what’s going to happen. Both situations are very messy.

Lillard wants Miami and Harden wants LA, but in both cases the target team doesn’t seem to have the assets to pull off the trade and keep the core team they want to keep.

I don’t see how this ends, especially because in Harden’s case Morey is a bit of a prick. Harden is a very difficult guy. I wouldn’t want him on my team, but if a guy promises you certain things, you opt in, and then he doesn’t deliver, you have a right to be pissed off at him. I’d have called him out too.

Philly’s circus seems as untenable as the Knicks’ circus pre-Leon. Hinkie’s approach, while undoubtably setting the team up for being an EC dynasty, still subjected the franchise to years of bottom-feeding ridicule…you just can’t go 10-72 after finishing with 18 and 19 wins in the seasons prior and survive, and yet since he was fired, nothing has really gone well enough for them to justify The Process. You simply have to come out of that with at least multiple EC finals appearances. Yet hiring Colangelo, then Morey and Doc, essentially wasted Embiid’s prime. Now they have to hope that Embiid not only remains healthy and doesn’t demand a trade, but that they have enough assets to build a team that can overcome the now very tough top of the East.

They are still only a couple of lucky breaks away from a finals appearance…but if I were a Sixers fan I would be in utter despair at how things have played out.

i’ve been scoring my dogs lately…along with a good bun, takes the whole experience to the next level…

assume you’re grilling or broiling…i guess scoring avoids the whole blistering thing…

i am partial to Beaver Brand mustards…their deli style/or spicy is pretty good…also like bubbie’s kraut…

was in Chicago this weekend moving my son back for school and went to this place Devil Dawgs on Rush…was pretty good…got the “blue demon” dog…1/4 lb dog with kraut, onions, spicy mustard and something called blue demon sauce…like mayo mixed with siracha…that hit the spot…

I don’t see in excess of 50 wins but all that matters is that we get to at least the ECF…otherwise regular season wins mean bupkas…

My guess is that if Morey doesn’t get something done with Harden sooner than later, he will be fired. It’s his mess to clean up.

I read somewhere that Morey may actually want to trade both Embiid and Harden so he can start all over, but he has to get something good for Harden and right now his market value is not very good between the playoff flameouts, the trade demands, and huge salary.

The Athletic is ranking NBA teams’ off seasons for how well they improved the team this off-season. The bottom third came out yesterday and the middle third appeared today. I kept expecting the Knicks would be ranked low. They didn’t do very much in the off season (One semi-major move), they haven’t traded for a top player, and, of course, one never expects the National media to be enthused about the Knicks. But they ranked number 13, better than more than half the teams in the league. The full text of their Knicks write up is:

    13. New York Knicks

2022-23 record: 47-35; lost in second round

Added: G Donte DiVincenzo (four years, $50M); two future second-round picks (acquired from Indiana); F Jaylen Martin (two-way); F Nathan Knight (two-way); F Dylan Windler (two-way); G Duane Washington Jr. (two-way)
Lost: F Obi Toppin (traded to Indiana); G Derrick Rose (signed with Memphis); G Trevor Keels (waived)
Retained: G Miles McBride (team picked up $1.83M option for 2023-24); C Jericho Sims ($1.9M guarantee picked up for 2023-24)
Extended: G Josh Hart (four years, $81M)
Returning from injury: F Julius Randle (ankle)

The skinny: More solid work from Leon Rose and crew in getting the Hart deal done quickly, giving coach Tom Thibodeau a very strong quintet of Jalen Brunson, Hart, Quentin Grimes, DiVincenzo and Immanuel Quickley to utilize. That feels like at least one guard too many in a normal rotation, but Hart and/or Grimes can and likely will scale up to the three when needed. A bit of an overpay for DiVincenzo, but nothing about which to get back-page angry. I’m glad New York didn’t take the bait in search of another star and move off RJ Barrett after a strong postseason. With their numerous future first-round picks and strong guard rotation, the Knicks remain poised to make a big run for the next non-Damian Lillard superstar who comes on the market. Perhaps a Cameroon native?

My take on the Republican Debate:
    Overall: Blech!
In terms of helping/hurting their (already shitty) chances and whether or not it will help their poll numbers:
    Winners: Pence, Haley, Scott
    Neutral: DeSantis, Hutchinson, Burgum
    Losers: Ramaswamy, Christie

I think Trump was also a winner, since no one really stood out as a serious challenger to win over his cult. Unless he is barred from the nomination, it’s a done deal. In that sense, the biggest loser was DeSantis, since he was the only one with even a puncher’s chance, and neutral wasn’t going to help.

“ My take on the Republican Debate!”

I have a very different take.

Ramaswamy has a LOT of momentum among hard core republicans, which is the main reason the rest of the candidates were attacking him and members of the audience that supported other candidates were trying to drown him out. He’s tapping into the Trump support without the baggage of being an insensitive narcissist. He setting himself up for the future.

He’s very bright and super quick on his feet. I’m not sure how much you have heard him, but I listen to a lot of podcasts and he crushes them all the time. He’s really sharp.

Personally, I don’t think he’s electable yet and I think some of his stated goals are naive. The establishment won’t allow him to do much of what he says he wants to do domestically. The last thing the establishment wants is another outsider looking to blow things up at home and getting the US out of overseas conflicts, especially its proxy wars against Russia.

By the way, I use the word establishment as a synonym for corrupt scumbags on both sides.

I’m at work and can’t watch the debate, but apparently the candidates were asked does climate change exist and very few candidates had a straight answer. Ramaswamy called climate change a complete hoax and said measures to address climate change were killing more people than climate change itself. At least Haley agreed it exists and is a problem. I don’t see how you can like a candidate who is in favor of world destruction.

“Ramaswamy called climate change a complete hoax and said measures to address climate change were killing more people than climate change itself.”

This, and he also has questioned the validity of the 9/11 report and wants to appease Putin. The attacks on him were more about his extreme positions than about his standing in the polls. The only one he can steal points from after this debate is Trump, and that’s not happening right now. I doubt that the suburban women and young, educated people who cost Trump re-election would have anything to do with him.

Haley, on the other hand, took some moderate (but still conservative) positions, and seemed very presidential. I could see her doing much better than most everyone on the stage in those demographics…and would therefore do the best in a general election compared to the rest of the bunch. I’ll be interested to see how the non-Trump share of the polling changes based on this debate.

    Favorite line of the week:

I don’t see how you can like a candidate who is in favor of world destruction.

Maybe it’s just me, but I have a hard time believing that a guy named Vivek Ramaswamy, who is Hindu and not a Christian, is gonna have a lot of luck winning a Republican presidential primary anytime real soon.

JK- I actually think Republican voters might be more open minded about Vivek. He seems to be able to channel some crazy in a way that they like. And he is entertaining.

The idea that a man of Donald Trump’s character wood command absolute loyalty from American evangelicals would have seemed wildly implausible not too long ago.

And Obama won in the heartland.

It’s possible basically. But Trump will win this unless he is in jail.
