No real discussion of the Anthony Davis contract yesterday. Since it’s tumbleweeds again so far, and since I need something to distract me while waiting to be discharged from Frank’s place of employment (for what everyone thinks/hopes will be the last time)… thoughts? The Lakers had to do it, because a health Brow raises their ceiling so much, and allows for a transition out of the LeBron era, so they don’t go in the toilet at a moment when they don’t have control over most of their own picks. But that injury history is… scary. As has the dropoff in his shooting.

Ok Alan, I will help distract you. Read an article today (can’t remember where) talking about the player salary escalation and mentioning the potential $100million per year contracts, also invoking the $1million per game threshold once $82million happens.

Two things hit me about this. First, perhaps the NBA salary benchmark may move from per season to some other smaller metric, maybe per game or ala European football contracts which are always talked about as per week amounts. Second, if that happens will there be an increase to more analytical value for players who stay really healthy? I saw a post here mentioning Davis being the first $2million per game player which got me thinking. Most of the metrics have very little penalty if a player plays 10 games less. And if so, Julius (and RJ) should become more valuable.

Anyone remember when David Winfield crossed the $1 million dollar a year barrier?

Some said the world would end. They might not have been wrong…

I thought the Davis contract was weird just because he has 2 years left.

Of all the people to wait on extending the guy who is past 30 and injury prone would be near the top of the list.

Also, started watching the OC the other week. Damn, it’s way better than I ever thought. I sat down to watch it and next thing I knew I finished the 1st season.

Took me way longer than it should have to realize the main character was the guy in Gotham

EB, I should warn you that you e now seen the absolute peak of the series. Season two is more uneven, season three is a catastrophe, and while I love season four, it’s divisive. But yes.

A lot of the book is about how the show could be so good and then so bad, and everyone is really candid about all of that.

Out of curiosity, is it better for you if I buy the book on Amazon, a book store, or somewhere else?

EB, I should warn you that you e now seen the absolute peak of the series. Season two is more uneven, season three is a catastrophe, and while I love season four, it’s divisive. But yes.

I think it’s too late and I’m going to watch the whole thing no matter how bad it gets

What matters most is that you preorder it now, regardless of from where. Preorders have become huge in the book business. If lots of people haven’t bought a book in advance, it leads to a cascade effect that I won’t bore you all with here. So get it from wherever you prefer, but if you can do that sooner rather than later, I would appreciate it, EB. Thanks!

Preordering sounds a lot like trading for a future draft pick. Don’t wait for the actual review. Lock in a price for the upside.

    Alan, are you actually Leon?

I’ve estimated carry a median outcome of 15, 25, 35, and 35. The final haul could be better or could be worse, but everyone seems to agree on that median outcome.

Everyone does not agree, it’s just been too tiresome to have this argument in the summertime.

First of all, the pick you claim has a median outcome of 25 already conveyed at 27.

Second, the Detroit Pistons won 17 games. Teams that win 17 games tend to stay at the bottom for a while.

As for the Wizards pick, I did a run down of the last 30 years not too long ago and that franchise’s pick falls inside the protection zone more often than not. And they are outright tanking.

So the median outcome is actually something like 27, 33, 35, and 38, for a lottery pick with multiple franchise altering players available to be selected. That is not fair value. That is a piss poor return.

I think it’s too late and I’m going to watch the whole thing no matter how bad it gets

That’s the spirit! (Also, the book will be way more fun for you that way.)

Also, there’s been a lot fewer bands than I was led to believe

The band thing doesn’t really take off until season 2, though obviously there’s a ton of great music on the soundtrack. But Rooney is the only band to perform in person in that first season. Rooney!!!!

while I love season four, it’s divisive

And here I thought I was all alone in my love and appreciation for Taylor Townsend.

Alan, we may disagree about the Knicks a lot but television wise you might be my soul mate. I can’t wait to give your book as a Christmas present to all sorts of people who are going to have no idea what I just gave them.

What matters most is that you preorder it now, regardless of from where. Preorders have become huge in the book business. If lots of people haven’t bought a book in advance, it leads to a cascade effect that I won’t bore you all with here.

Weird. I could think of some reasons it makes some sense but still kinda weird.

but if you can do that sooner rather than later, I would appreciate it, EB. Thanks!

Hmmmm…. what was your take on the incineration again 😉

    Officially preordered!!

I’m binge watching it obviously so maybe i cant entirely tell but it seems less episodic than most shows I remember from the early 2000s. Feels more like a streaming era show

Also, it strikes me that pretty much everyone on the show is white

Alan as an fyi, decided to give you an international preorder lift as I live in the UK (and will buy your book in any event) but the preorder price is £41 for a paperback on Amazon…

That seems insane to me, Bernie. What? It even appears to be coming out from the U.S. publisher, as opposed to them having sold the rights to someone else who jacked up the cost. My guess/hope is that the price will be corrected closer to release, and appreciate the reticence to preorder at that amount.

Also, it strikes me that pretty much everyone on the show is white

    Welcome to the OC, bitch!

Also, it strikes me that pretty much everyone on the show is white

We talk about that, too! Including the fact that it was designed as an interracial teen romance, but the network said no because they had two other shows with that theme in development that year.

There was an article in the Athletic about an old show called Playmakers, which was about a fictional football team and was an ESPN original. It was very popular, but the NFL, which was in the process of renewing broadcasting contracts didn’t like it. The show was canceled and ESPN got a good new NFL contract. Has anyone watched it? Apparently it’s not available for streaming.

End of day random factoid, sort of David Winfield variety, from NYT:

In 1993, the nation’s largest women’s professional basketball league, the W.B.A., had just six teams and paid players $50 a game.

Also hadn’t realized (or willfully forgot) that the Magic are owned by the DeVos family. May they all rot in a hell too insidious for even Jowles’ fertile imagination to envision.

“So the @OrlandoMagic who have a majority Black roster, a Black head coach, and a Black GM decided it was a good idea to support a man that claims that slavery had personal benefits for the enslaved?” Larry Nance Jr., a player for the New Orleans Pelicans who is on the board of the league’s social justice coalition, said on social media on Wednesday.

Hey geo, wish I did, but I’m a willful ignoramus when it comes to futball. Was forced to watch a fair amount of it while trapped in hotels in Asia in a previous life, when the alternative was cricket or Bollywood. Actually finally came to understand a fair amount about the rules of cricket, Bollywood almost entirely escapes me, and soccer offsides still seem like a bad idea. Sort of like hockey and six 6’4″, 220 lb men a team in a tiny rink. Make it five of them each, and that’s a sport. Otherwise it’s an icy mosh pit, or demolition derby on skates.

Otherwise, I guess let’s go USA, because unilateral nationalistic ideology. We’re better than Sweden, even though Sweden ranks #5 overall, almost all of Sweden’s trash is recycled, Swedes are some of the world’s most generous people, donating about 1 percent of gross national product to humanitarian aid programs each year, and the society has continued to diversify, due in part to refugees who have been welcomed into Swedish borders.

i always had this notion that the folks up in scandinavia were some of the happiest folks on earth…

maybe the cold is not that bad…no, i think i’d rather sweat than have the chills…i don’t like the teeth chattering thing…

i’m not familiar with their laws or customs, but – they sure seem to have figured some societal things out…

i love an underdog story – women’s athletics is just that…

as far as the game goes – hopefully morgan can finish…her and rapinoe play well together…rodman’s back should be better…

just like the knicks, as donnie has taught me – i’ll try not to care too much about the outcome of a sporting event…it’s just a game…i hope they win though…

i’ll assume the worse until proven otherwise…perhaps be pleasantly surprised…

i think it was noble who mentioned going to a liberty’s game not too long ago…that’s cool…

    Has anyone watched it?

I reviewed Playmakers back in the day. IIRC, it was a show where what it was about was more interesting than how it was about it. Yeah, it puts all the NFL’s dirty laundry up there on the screen, but the characters and performances were meh, stories predictable, etc. Again, this is my recollection 20 years later, having not thought of the show much, if at all, since.

    They look better today…

I feel like they need new blood though.

    Rodman looks great

Swedes are some of the world’s most generous people, donating about 1 percent of gross national product to humanitarian aid programs each year, and the society has continued to diversify, due in part to refugees who have been welcomed into Swedish borders.

Welcomed is a bit strong for a country that responded to letting in some refugees by nearly electing a far-right, anti-immigrant populist from a party with ties to neo-nazism in the 2022 general election.
