After last season’s rumors (and maybe missed medicals) Kemba Walker has finally landed in Europe.
He’ll play in France for Monaco team, as announced in the headliners on Euroleague home page.

    Thanks for the memories, Kemba.

    Some interesting Knicks news yesterday:
-Fournier to Spurs: I don’t see a trade that makes sense other than straight up for McBuckets personnel-wise, which works in the trade machine. We’d probably have to throw in a couple of 2nds. Not sure what the point would be other to get a disgruntled vet off the roster.
-Katz described CHI’s asking price for LaVine to Knicks as “giant.” Personally I’m glad that it won’t happen, at least until the price comes down substantially.
-Knicks apparently have shown no interest in acquiring KAT at any conceivable price, which would obviously be exorbitant. Thank goodness!

Knicks apparently have shown no interest in acquiring KAT at any conceivable price, which would obviously be exorbitant. Thank goodness!

This to me was the most interesting thing in the Katz story. (As always, remember to click through!) Everyone has assumed basically since Leon arrived that KAT was part of his endgame. But Fred reported (and then repeated on Macri’s podcast today) that we haven’t engaged with Minnesota at all on KAT. Not just a situation like where we asked about LaVine and Chicago made an unreasonable ask. We do not seem to care about KAT at all. Good.

Obviously patience is a virtue and Leon has earned the right to it given last season. But the part of the Katz article that gave me pause for thought was the interest in Embiid. Just a bit worried that Leon passes on a good opportunity (not that I have seen any yet) to keep the powder dry in case Joel becomes available. We’ve seen this movie before. If we are willing to wait I think there is a better chance we land Luka as it is a near certainty that Kyrie will be disruptive in Dallas.

First you need to determine what our record should’ve been based on our end of season rotation, then adjust for the changes other teams made.

Okay, but we’ll improve by having Hart available for 50 extra games. And by not having Fournier or Cam Reddish in the lineup for 30ish games.

    I agree with both points.

That will be a net plus, as will any development from Mitch, RJ, Grimes, and Quickley. But when I think in terms of all the health issues across the league last year (including ours), the changes that were made during the season last year, the quality of young players with upside, and draft picks this year, it doesn’t even seem close to me. On a relative basis, imo we have taken a step back.

I was expecting us to make make one meaningful upgrade in the off season, especially since we haven’t been drafting anyone that could give us an upside surprise. If you aren’t adding and getting better via draft, you have to get better in FA or via trades. There’s still time, but I’m disappointed.

I don’t make many bets. I like to have a solid margin of safety.

Last year I wanted to bet the over and got shut out because I screwed up opening day for the league. uggh

I don’t know what the under/over will be this year, but this year I am thinking in terms of under. We’ll see what the total is.

    @ShamsCharania
New York Knicks guard Quentin Grimes will participate on the U.S. Select Team among group of rising Americans who will join Team USA camp in August for FIBA World Cup, sources tell @TheAthleti @Stadium. Grimes averaged 11.3 points as a full-time starter for Knicks last season.

    Hustlebunny hive, activate!

“I don’t know what the under/over will be this year, but this year I am thinking in terms of under. We’ll see what the total is.”

Strat, even with the lack of big moves, one thing you are leaving out is the potential improvement of chemistry and leadership. At the start of last year, there wasn’t a set rotation. Brunson was new to the team, Josh Hart wasn’t on the roster, and Grimes and iHart were dealing with nagging injuries so it was hard to even see what the potential of the team was until after the all-star break.

Thus far, the only unknown in terms of the rotation is minutes allocation for a) the backup PF spot and b) Grimes vs. DDV. and RJ vs. JHart. I think the swapping of Obi for DDV is a net plus.

I doubt that there will be any regression from Julius or RJ. Neither shot particularly well from 3 last year, and nothing else about them was particularly flukey, so just repeating what they did shouldn’t be particularly hard….and there’s a chance that they actually shoot better from 3 now that things have stabilized, and play better overall.

And in the case of injury, I’m not sleeping on the guys on the roster from 10-15 either. Who knows, Knight or Roby might turn out to be better than Obi. Deuce might start hitting 3’s like he has at every other level. Maybe another young player with upside shakes loose for one of those 13-15 spots.

And if required, Leon has assets to burn before the trade deadline to make a Josh Hart-like deal or better. I don’t think they will stand pat if the team is floundering around .500 with a glaring flaw being exposed.

As to other teams in the East (and in the NBA) that you think will improve, lots of them have huge question marks. Boston without Smart’s presence is an entirely different team. Philly, Miami, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Brooklyn, and Toronto all have serious question marks. I don’t think there’s a team in the East we can’t match up with in a regular season game.

With all the necessary caveats about how we still have a long way to go, it’s very refreshing that we have so many guys intriguing enough to be affiliated with Team USA in some capacity.

Arguments over Grimes’ ceiling and the like can get unpleasant, but at least we’re not talking about Frank Ntilikina and Kadeem Allen anymore.

Despite the fear of injury, I’m really happy that several of our players are involved in the international stuff this summer. Great chance to work on their respective games in a competitive environment that can’t be replicated in scrimmages and pickup games. I like that they get to hear different coaching voices as well rather than Thibs’ eternal bellowing…

“Arguments over Grimes’ ceiling and the like can get unpleasant…”

    Gee, that hasn’t happened in a while…I wonder why…

A very difficult upcoming season to predict. While our lineup is currently a known entity, which version of the lineup will show up is the question.

We had three players play above initial expectations last year. Most everyone here expects Brunson to replicate last year. Many expect Randle to do so, although there is a subset rightly fearful of a year-to-year fluctuation. I think most here believe Hart can replicate last year, with the exception of his three-point shooting percentage.

Which IQ and Grimes show up is a huge question — I don’t think anyone expects them to regress, but will they be copies of last year (which is fine, I guess) or will there be significant improvements?

The huge question is RJ — will we get the same up-and-down fluctuations we’ve had so far, resulting in overall suckitude, or will he improve in a consistent manner?

I think those last two questions will define how the season goes. We know what we have in Mitch and iHart, which is perfectly cromulent. I personally don’t expect Donte to be anything but decent, which again is fine but not season-altering. I’d love to see McBride take a big step forward, but even if it happens (and I’m not holding my breath) I don’t think it will alter the team’s fortunes much. Ditto for Sims, much less the end-of-bench mob.

End of musings. Back to staring at the birdfeeder…

DraftKings has NYK o/u at 44.5

    +100 for the under
    -120 for the over

    FanDuel o/u at 43.5

    +108 for the under
    -132 for the over

But if course we’re not asking anyone to put down money and we’re not taking any vig, so it really costs nothing to make a guess how far below 47 you think we’ll be.

Or say if we’ll finish top-6 in the East, which was the initial question

    howdy doogie 🙂

    I hope you’re staying cool…

was listening a while back to someone describing the future and climate change…

    2 basic options:

1). Adapt – solar panels and a good air conditioning unit, lots of sun screen

    2). Move – relocate north

how are you staying cool doogie?

I don’t really particularly aim to stay cool, Geo. I like hot, which is probably getting dumber and dumber in my seemingly quickly advancing age. I still go out and shoot baskets at lunchtime even if it’s 95 degrees out. 🙂

reference The Killers chatter from yesterday – was checking the yaamava theater for upcoming performances…

grabbed a general admission ticket (standing floor space in front of the stage) to see alice in chains in october…now that is one show you do not want to sit through, oh heck’s no…

their shows are stimulating both visually and audially – rock and roll…still got the uptight tribal casino security everywhere – but, within a GA crowd, who cares…everyone is just singing and moving together…

    it’s such a beautiful thing…

also saw The Killers are performing soon…unlike ‘ol Missy who i don’t think sold the theater out – Killer tickets are only on resale and they’re listed at 1,500 a ticket…

wow, they must be pretty good…

also saw that rob zombie is appearing later this year…when i think of techno rock – it’s trent reznor and rob zombie…

I’m trying to be more judicious with my concert attendance this year – i’m trying not to go to a show if there’s only one song i really wanna hear…

however – IF, we could choose our own theme music, More Human than Human would pretty much be it for me…

it’s like rocket fuel for the feeling of mania…

when i first heard the song – i thought the phrase was: more human than you man…i took it as an aggressive taunt – from and about the future…

i love blade runner…ai and robotics are awesome…

@DDB It’s Markaten, just like Clyde says it. I’ll even use it in a sentence for you. Our company’s sales were down this year due to a poor markaten campaign.

i get it totally – the extreme heat feels like one big sauna outside (steam room depending where you live 🙂 )…

it’s very cleansing…the exertion plus sweating like a pig – it’s good for the soul…

yeah, gotta watch your ticker though doogie…

my thing is some medicine i take makes me photosensitive…doesn’t take long for my skin to feel like it’s burning…i got gear and all, but, i’m pretty solidly committed to a good bit of laziness and foolishness on a daily basis…

Which IQ and Grimes show up is a huge question

To me, they aren’t “huge” questions. They will come back and most likely be better than last season. Maybe Grimes doesn’t take a big leap forward like IQ did and they both just improve “incrementally.” But to me, the odds they stay the same or are only a little better are pretty small (barring an injury).

To me the biggest question is RJ. But if he’s up and down (mostly down) like he was last season, we’ve seen the team still be good with him being the worst starter.

I don’t know. I don’t see this huge improvement in the east. Where is it? Miami? Same team so far unless they get Dame. Philly? STill the same. Bucks? Still the same. Celtics? KP is a gamble. They could be better offensively or they could take a step back as a team. Cavs? Probably team most likely to be better with internal improvement. Bulls? Same. Raptors? Same. Pacers will probably be better. Then you have the non-playoff teams. Wizards are way worse. People think Orlando, Charlotte, Detroit are gonna be better. Let’s see it before we believe it. Nets will be a solid team but probably no better than 9th or 10th seed.

We will be around where we were last season. It’s not gonna take us 20 games to figure out our rotation. We’ll have Hart for a full season. people are worried about minutes with the addition of DDV but the flip side is now if IQ or Grimes or Hart or RJ get hurt for a stretch, we probably don’t miss a beat.

Good teams with continuity tend to tighten up defensive rotations and add wrinkles to their offense. I like our odds of being a 50 plus win team.

Plus it’s fairly fun to shout “Nate Knight!”

If he becomes a prodigious shot blocker some day, maybe you’ll hear announcers scream, “HE JUST MADE THAT BALL SAY ‘NATE KNIGHT’!”

    You know, instead of “night-night”?

    Hello?

    Is this thing on?

@DDB I’m starting to think you must be a truck salesman with how obsessed you are with Lorry Markaten

Actually, if I’m obsessed with anything at all, it is with good grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I mean, I’m an editor.

But today I only mentioned him because I thought that it would be fun, as I hadn’t previously done so in a while. Nobody even mentioned him or spelled his name incorrectly prior to my bringing him up today. 🙂

Z-man, thanks for the link. Watching it was fun, but I worried about two things: one, can he make those shots in the NBA and two, there must be bad things were not seeing since these are only the highlights. But the next video up in the YouTube queue was this one, showing his career high NBA scoring performance of nineteen points, which was against Boston

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VNmnaIedbGk

So he has a chance scoring threes and scoring inside in the NBA. Honestly, at first I thought it was G League, but then I realized that was Horford guarding him on one shot.

As for my worry two, I have no idea.

DraftKings has NYK o/u at 44.5

My gut would have said like 46 wins so I guess that’s not a bad line.

Here’s a nice postgame interview from Knight after the TWolves hung a 150-spot on the Bulls. Hard to not like listening to the kid.

And here’s a pre-draft video scouting report with strengths and weaknesses. Honestly, he seems like a much slower and less explosive, but bigger and much stronger version of Obi, in that he looks good against lower-level competition but would struggle against starters. He gets beat off the dribble and spun around the same way, lots of reaching fouls. The biggest difference is that Obi is sort of a 3/4 tweener while Knight is more of a 4/5 tweener. But I’d like to see some of Knight at the 4 with iHart at the 5.

Arguments over Grimes’ ceiling and the like can get unpleasant, but at least we’re not talking about Frank Ntilikina and Kadeem Allen anymore.

Or Alonzo Trier 😁. Amen to this!

BTW ‘sup good people. I’m getting a couple more puffs in at the cigar lounge right now while the wife has the baby boy out at the mall. 8pm PST starts my evening “shift” with him which involves getting him out the bath or shower, getting his bottle ready for his bedtime feed and to put him to bed for the night. Some days he falls asleep easy, and some days takes a little extra work. He’ll be 6 months next week.

    nice cdiggy…

doing dad stuff on a friday night…that is what is good in life…

maybe my favorite part of dad stuff was taking naps with my son on my chest…over a decade ago now, but, still makes me smile…

enjoy a wonderful evening cdiggy 🙂

I decided to drive across country to see my hometown “Los Angeles” Angels play a home game again, because the the greatest baseball ever that nobody in LA has ever heard of was pitching. As a newly converted angels super-fan I am just so perplexed as to why this guy isn’t on every billboard and every ad in town. There should be a video playing at LAX if him welcoming tourists to LA “home of the Los Angeles Angels”. He should be a household name, like Jordan, LeBron, Tiger, and Tyson….

…but at the game I learn that he’s probably going to be traded this week, or else the Angels will lose him for nothing…

…When I used to think of inept franchise management, Dolan was always the first thing that popped to mind, but in the past few hours the Angel’s front office/marketing dept may have surpassed even the Knicks standard for suckitude.
