Apropos our yesterday’s discussion, ESPN just labeled Isaiah Roby the player to watch on our summer league team. They wrote the following:

    Isaiah Roby | Forward

The Knicks haven’t prioritized the draft in recent years and have only two players who heard their names called in it on the roster, including 2022 pick Trevor Keels, who spent most of last season in the G League. The most interesting player looking toward this upcoming season is 2019 draft pick Roby, who has played for three different NBA teams in four years, but may have an opportunity to show the Knicks he’s deserving as a backup power forward following the trade of Toppin. The 25-year-old has defensive versatility and passing prowess and has converted 35% of his 3s in the NBA, attributes that could be useful as he attempts to show he’s worthy of a roster spot. — Givony

Revised the question, whose love is stronger: ruru for Melo, E for RJ or Strat for KP and Frank : – )

    Big Blue Al,

I’m not sure whose love is stronger, but I was right about KP’s development despite endless injuries and misuse and I still believe Frank’s value is underrated despite being wrong about his development on offense. So it’s probably me. 🙂

Sorry about your dog, Z-Man. After so many years, our pets are a member of the family and it’s hard when they go. 🙁

Why do i keep getting a Mikal Bridges video saying he expected/wanted to come to the Knicks? I think it’s a sign, Brooklyn… do the right thing and trade him to the Knicks! 😀

“Would we rather have Grant Williams or DDV? I’m guessing they’ll be about the same price. Ship has sailed, obviously, just something I’ve been wondering.”

I was thinking about Grant Williams as a possible target when it was clear he was going to shake loose and believe I posted about it here. Here’s what my diehard Celtics fan friend had to say in the aftermath of the KP trade:

“its sounding like Grant Williams is going in a sign and trade. Good riddance to him, as he’s undersized and slow footed, has a big mouth and high opinion of himself and wants way more than he’s worth.”

Even without that, I had my doubts. First, not a fan of fake tough guys. Second, it seemed that the Celtics could have used his “skillset” more than they did but were reluctant to give him consistent minutes. That kind of gave me Fournier vibes.

As such, I think DDV is the much better choice, even with the quibbles about positional needs.

Though I wonder if Strat has been posting on Mavs boards the last few years…

The answer is YES. I actually got banned for awhile for continuously suggesting that once KP got away from Doncic, Cuban, and Carlisle he was going to be a much more productive and efficient player. They don’t like Doncic criticisms over there. 🙂

Strat, but you can agree even this non-injured version of KP is a disappointment from what we thought he could be based on his rookie season, right?

“its sounding like Grant Williams is going in a sign and trade. Good riddance to him, as he’s undersized and slow footed, has a big mouth and high opinion of himself and wants way more than he’s worth.”

    I’m with this guy.

I see no evidence he contributed to winning in any meaningful way for the Celtics. He’s undersized, slow, and his defense is overrated. They’ll probably love him in Dallas. He’ll stand in the corner and shoot a few 3s while Kyrie and Doncic mostly take turns dribbling and dominating the ball. He’s the perfect fit for their “we don’t need no stinkin interior or perimeter defense” strategy for team building.

Strat, but you can agree even this non-injured version of KP is a disappointment from what we thought he could be based on his rookie season, right?

I think all the injuries and playing in Dallas slowed his development on offense by a couple of years. But they also slowed him down a bit defensively and took away a bit of athleticism. So I’d have to agree with you. Even though he’s not a bad defender now that he’s healthy again, he’s not as good as it looked like he might be and on some nights gets abused. But he was excellent on offense for the Wizards last year.

About DDV or Grant Williams, and although i don’t agree DDV playing 20 MPG until we solve the minutes crunch is a problem, with Randle playing between 35 and 38 MPG Grant would be playing only 10 to 13 MPG, and that’s too little for a player making MLE money. We can find a player that’ll be good for 12 to 15 MPG with the BAE.

I probably didn’t communicate effectively about my dog last night (my daughter brought me back some Grappa from the Finger Lakes and that hit me pretty good!). He’s definitely in decline but that could last days, weeks, or months. He has been developing concerning symptoms, and the vet thinks that something bad is going on in his throat but can’t do anything beyond palliative stuff because he has heart disease and probably couldn’t handle general anesthesia. The reality that he’s a short-timer hit pretty hard. My wife and I are going to Jamaica for our 30th anniversary next week and it will be hard to put him out of our minds; hopefully nothing will happen while we’re away. In any case, it will be a disaster when it happens, especially for my wife and kids. I haven’t been through it but have family and friends who have and know what they went through. Not looking forward to it.

But thanks for the well-wishes! I recently read a great quote that pretty much sums things up: “Dogs have a short lifespan. Their only fault, really.”

I guess I shouldn’t have turned off the Mets game last night. Looks like Francisco Alvarez is the real deal!

“Dogs have a short lifespan. Their only fault, really.”

    Indeed 🐶

NBA Odds: Clippers, Knicks favored to land James Harden if traded away from Philadelphia

Anyone else felt uneasy reading this?

“Anyone else felt uneasy reading this?”

Nah, because it doesn’t make any sense that Leon would spend assets on maybe the most anti-Thibs player out there. And Harden hasn’t expressed any interest in coming here. Sounds like pure, unadulterated clickbait to me.

Love it or hate it (no need to weigh in E, I can assure you we know where you stand), Leon and Thibs have a collaborative relationship that makes certain players radioactive. Acquiring a player like Harden would strongly signal that that relationship has soured, and that Leon has completely jumped the shark. I have 100% faith that it’s not happening.

My guess is that the Knicks are still in pursuit of PG13, which is also scary, but at least makes some sense on paper. Harden is mixed up in that scenario, and someone must be conflating that in generating the above odds.

Now that makes me feel uneasy!

We have such a glaring need for a 2-way player at the 3 it’s hard to be too upset about the PG rumors. Especially since the rumor is we denied his extension as part of the deal. It would be a short window, but if Thibs didn’t run PG into the ground, a legit one.

Yeah, whatever else you might think about Leon Rose, he’s not trading for James freakin’ Harden.

Of course, if he ever did…well…that’d be pretty hilarious.

The Thybulle situation was weird. That was a lot for Dallas to give him, and that was a lot for Portland to match. Thybulle is one of those dudes who you can carry on an otherwise really good team. Portland keeping him just seems weird.

It’s not awful, but nor it is particularly good.

Z–man, very sorry to hear about your dog. We lost one of ours, Bella, 2 years ago. She deteriorated very rapidly and we had to have her put to sleep. My first dog was killed on our front porch one summer when I was home from college. That one was very hard to take.

Lots of great authors over the years have written about the joys of pet dogs. Harlan Ellison wrote the classic “A Boy and His Dog” and also a heartbreaking true story of one of his dogs being take to be put to sleep in a section of “Deathbird Stories.”

And, there’s Lord Byron’s great poem “Epitaph to a Dog” that pretty much sums them all up:

    Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
    who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
    Strength without Insolence,
    Courage without Ferosity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
    if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
    BOATSWAIN, a DOG,
who was born in Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead Nov. 18th, 1808.

It’s not awful, but nor it is particularly good.

Which is exactly what we want, baby!

Z-Man, I am no expert, but suspect your dog is just experiencing the climb down from the high of the Knicks winning their first play-off series in his lifetime to the low of a pretty lacklustre off-season. Suspect he’ll be in good form come opening day.

Lots of great authors over the years have written about the joys of pet dogs. Harlan Ellison wrote the classic “A Boy and His Dog”

I don’t think that’s how I would describe that story. In fact, I don’t think that’s how anyone has ever described it.

Just good enough to not throw the last 2 games of the season is the ideal Mavs team

Richaun Holmes at C feels especially egregious

Hardy probably has a spot in the rotation but needs to step up his defense, possible trade candidate if they struggle

    We don’t deserve dogs.

Interesting that we were looking into Yuta after all. Apparently Roby is going to get a real shot at backup PF minutes (Hoopshype), so good for him.

Now we can freak out about the minutes allocation even more, hooray!

Neither Williams nor DiVincenzo are real needle movers.

Dallas. . .idk, if Lively isn’t ready to go right away they have a huge hole at center. Bigs can contribute early, though and you can’t get much better than having Luka & Kyrie setting you up. If Lively can play or maybe Holmes gets rejuvenated they should certainly be able to light teams up.

Harlan Ellison wrote the classic “A Boy and His Dog” and also a heartbreaking true story of one of his dogs being take to be put to sleep in a section of “Deathbird Stories.”

Just went on a Harlan Ellison kick, annoyingly the Denver library only has him in the sci-fi anthologies and doesn’t include that story.

And more importantly, sorry about the dog

There are only two athletes in my lifetime who my affection for even scratches the surface of dog love….Willis and Clyde. I definitely got choked up when learning of Willis’ demise. Clyde will hit me a lot harder…my whole family loves him and is bummed when he’s not doing a game.

Harlan Ellison is one of my writer heroes, despite being the very definition of an asshat. He also wins the world championship for best short story titles, over and over again.

It just goes on and on. I presume Alan has something to say about his TV work…?

I guess I shouldn’t have turned off the Mets game last night. Looks like Francisco Alvarez is the real deal!

It’s great to see that Alvarez worked his way through a major slump, and is now raking again. He’s still only 21, should easily be a 30-40 HR player, and is also a surprisingly good defender at that young age. Franchise player. Brett Baty, on the other hand, is a groundball machine and is going to need a lot of work. I don’t know if his swing is going to work in MLB.

The other guy who is a lot of fun is Kodai Senga, who was incredible last night. He rang up at least five hitters with called third strike fastballs, which means he really had them guessing, looking for that ghost fork pitch. When he can locate that 99 MPH fastball he’s really unhittable. Fastball command is really the only thing keeping him from being a genuine ace. His pure stuff reminds you of what it was like when the Mets actually had elite pitchers.

The Mets still aren’t going anywhere though, because Scherzer and Verlander are getting paid $80M to pitch like a pair of 3-4 starters, the bullpen stinks and half of the lineup needs to be replaced. I hope the Mets will be sellers at the deadline and aren’t fooled by this short winning streak.

What about contacting the Pacers about Jordan Nwora? It looks like he is out of the rotation now that they got Obi and Brown so maybe offering one of their 2nds back would get it done.

I don’t think that’s how I would describe that story. In fact, I don’t think that’s how anyone has ever described it.

    Indeed

It just goes on and on. I presume Alan has something to say about his TV work…?

Raven, I have to admit that the only TV episode of his I’ve ever seen is his Star Trek one, “City on the Edge of Forever.” But I’ve seen that one a lot, as it’s on the short list of best Star Trek/sci-fi TV episodes ever. (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which I just adore, did something of an homage to it in last week’s episode.)

I like SNW, but that episode was the palest possible version of COTEOF. Ellison gets to a much more resonant and powerful place so much more quickly, it’s kind of amazing in contrast.

I may have missed it here, but have you all weighed in on Tyler Herro. Obviously he’s available, and can shoot and create his own offense and all, and his contract matches up with Fournier’s dead weight. Probably won’t happen because Knicks/Heat conference rivalry, blah blah, but it’s something Leon Rose has to at least be thinking about at the moment, no?

Miami will want a lot for Herro, especially since he’s the main piece they can trade for a star like Dame or whomever. Beyond the enmity between our organizations, doesn’t remotely seem like a fit.

What else are we trading for Herro? Miami’s not looking to salary dump him, he’s part of the rumored Damian Lillard trade.

No to Herro. They think he’s positive value, but on that contract I’m not convinced. And I don’t think he’s a fit tbh

Joking aside, if RJ Barrett abuses you on defense, you may not be the 2-way player we’re looking for….

If we get a SG with no defense I’d just go for Harden. He’s way better and Herro isn’t much healthier.

Portland would theoretically get Fournier and some of the Knicks surplus picks if the Knicks wish to facilitate the Lillard trade. It probably wouldn’t go down as a great trade, but it does represent a chance to upgrade the roster immediately, so you’d think Rose and co. have at least been discussing it internally this week. But it’s available, unlike all those other “keep the powder dry” scenarios they’ve cooked up over the years.

Donnie is Steve Mills but for shooting guards

I didn’t say they should trade for him, I just wondered if it had been discussed here because, unlike all the other trades that get discussed, this player is as eminently available as anyone ever. Smiley emoji.

Tyler Herro doesn’t hustle as much or play as hard or rebound as well as Donte DiVincenzo. QED.

Mike Scotto with a few nuggets of note for us:

The Knicks and Clippers originally had trade talks surrounding Paul George at the NBA draft. At the time, New York was considering a package featuring Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, and three first-round picks in exchange for George, league sources told HoopsHype. Toppin was then traded to the Pacers for two second-round picks, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

After that, RJ Barrett’s name was brought up briefly in trade talks by the Clippers in place of Toppin, league sources told HoopsHype. However, the asking price of parting with Barrett, Grimes, three first-round picks, and then having to negotiate a long-term extension for George, who’s 33 years old, was too high for the Knicks.

    and

The Knicks would consider an extension for Quickley around $20 million per year, league sources told HoopsHype. Should Quickley play himself into a higher average annual salary, the Knicks may consider trading him as part of a package to acquire a star player.

There’s more in there in terms of FAs we were in on but didn’t get, the idea of Roby being considered as the backup PF, and more. As always, I highly suggest you click the links of stories that seem interesting in the hopes of supporting journalism you like.

    Not evidence? Or not meaningful?

Anyone pro can have some good games.

The Celtics have been fairly consistently worse when he has been on the court. If there was a good explanation for that I might buy that he’s not as negative as I suspect he is, but he’s been in a lot of lineups, started, come off the bench, and it’s going on 4 years now that he’s not contributing much that I can find. He can shoot 3s, but he’s overrated defensively.

@Alan, speaking of supporting journalism, do you have any thoughts on the ESPN mass firings?

    You left off Jaden Hardy.

I think they are counting on him to take a big step forward this year. To me, as a rookie last year he looked mostly like a potentially high level scorer with no conscience. So he should fit right in. 🙂 From what I hear they are stressing defense and court awareness this year with him. I hope the entire team is in on those meetings and practices (for their sake).

The Celtics have been fairly consistently worse when he has been on the court.

Celtics are +5.3 & +4.5 with Grant on the court the last 2 seasons

If you’re referring to his on-off, then of course he’s negative. Their other PFs are Tatum and Timelord

I think I’m confusing City on the Edge with that one episode where it’s in chicago with gangsters…

the soup kitchen thing though foes sound a little familiar…

I think though my fave episode is where kirk takes down the lizard guy with his homemade rock bazooka thing…

reference pooch power – I never would have pictured myself caring for an animal (beyond putting out hummingbird juice and birdseed), very very happy though to have our maltipoo join the family…

she’s helped me soooo much with relaxing and being “present”…

even more so, she’s having a wonderful effect in keeping the boys happy and mellow in the house…

apparently both 2nds from the obi trade are the lesser of two picks in 28 and 29.

Wow, well that’s disappointing. Maybe shouldn’t be too surprising, I think they delay the specific pick announcement when the picks are significantly worse than their “name price”

I do kind of think the Pacers are the only team that actually has use for him. Most PFs are there to shoot and defend wings on the switch. Plus, he needs such a specific setup with a shooting C and PnR PG.

“apparently both 2nds from the obi trade are the lesser of two picks in 28 and 29.”

Sigh. I guess that’s better than sending out picks to dump him. If only slightly.

one parenting mystery I’ve never been able to reconcile:

even with all 3 kids in the house, things stay pretty calm and quiet most of the time – until I go in to the shower…

for years, no, forever – everytime I step in to the shower and turn on the water, within a minute or two there’s banging and shouting in the house…

it’s like there’s a light outside my bedroom door that states: “Wild Out” as soon as the water comes on and i start enjoying it…

dogs and kids, kids and dogs…

I think though my fave episode is where kirk takes down the lizard guy with his homemade rock bazooka thing…

High quality sci-fi right there, Geo. For years the Gorn was my profile pick. FWIW the new series brought them back in a good way, though clearly derivative of Alien.

    Gorn – ah, I think there’s some meta-quest vr game called Gorn…

when I saw it, I liked the name…the only game though that I’ve found interesting has been the star wars series…

I think I may need to try one of the zombie games maybe…

may I ask? what’s the Rama in reference too?

initially I hoped it was reference Rama, by Arthur C. Ckarke…such a great great novel…

then, I was sure it was reference to the indus god rama…

since you’ve shared your faith…I’m not so sure now…

I know, not really any of my business, I don’t know why these kind of questions stay in my head…

Sorry Z–man about your dog. I have lots of cats and two old dogs and a goldfish that is 13 years old-used to have sheep too! Losing pets, that are friends without any subtextual BS, is really hard. You seem like a kosher dude. I’m sure you were really kind to your dog, which is all that matters. Anyway, on another note, Clyde and Reed were my guys growing up too. I have cool photos of them (and others) donning my chambers. Hey, be well.

    @ShamsCharania
Atlanta Hawks All-Star Dejounte Murray and CEO of Klutch Sports Rich Paul are finalizing a four-year, $120 million veteran maximum extension with the franchise, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Deal includes a player option.

Well, at least the Hawks no longer need to worry about Murray as a flight risk. Remains to be seen if he and Trae can be a functional backcourt.

Thanks Judge! Always great when you check in. Sheep? Wow! Does having lots of pets make it any easier?

very thread relevant: just picked up our 9 year old sheepdog, clyde, from boarding.

i’m ok with donte, but would have preferred grant williams and duarte to what we did.

Celtics are +5.3 & +4.5 with Grant on the court the last 2 seasons

If you’re referring to his on-off, then of course he’s negative. Their other PFs are Tatum and Timelord

He’s +5.3 when he’s on the court because he often plays in lineups that are among the very best in the entire NBA.

He plays a lot with Tatum. That’s his #1 two man combo (1274 minutes together this year).

He also plays a lot with Robert Williams who plays more C, though RB didn’t play a lot this year due to injury.

In his career he has played in a variety of lineups both starting and coming off the bench, yet somehow the team is fairly consistently better with him off. IMO, it’s not just that there are other good players on the team. It’s that his defense is overrated. He’s undersized at PF, slow, and he’s doesn’t do a lot on offense other than shoots 3s.

He’s not a bad player. He’s just not that good and I don’t think he solved any of Dallas’s problems. Dallas’s problem is almost entirely related to the lack of both interior and perimeter defenders and a highly suspect teaming of Kyrie and Doncic.

Maybe he’ll surprise me and be better than I think, but I still don’t like what Dallas is doing. They are better than their tanking record last year. Plus they have a couple of decent young players, but I think they are going to wind up at the bottom of the playoffs in the west.

    So..Atlanta extended Murray.
    Hmph..
I have no idea what they’re doing because there also were rumblings about the shopping Hunter. That would be a bad idea because I think a forward tandem of Hunter and Griffin would be great between Capela, Murray, and Young.

I mean, I don’t think anyone is claiming Grant Williams is a star, that’s why he’s making MLE money and not anywhere near the max.

But he’s a perfect fit within the switchable 3&D archetype that lets you run modern offenses and defenses, even if he doesn’t excel at any of those skills.

At the end of the day he makes Dallas better defensively, even if that says more about his teammates than it does about him.

He’s +5.3 when he’s on the court because he often plays in lineups that are among the very best in the entire NBA.

He plays a lot with Tatum. That’s his #1 two man combo (1274 minutes together this year).

Every lineup the Celtics put out is one of the best lineups in the league.

He’s the worst player in a rotation that, when healthy, features a player one year removed from winning DPOY as 2nd worst in BPM and 2nd team All-NBA Jaylen Brown as the 3rd worst.

Somebody necessarily has to have a negative on-off unless every single player is at exactly 0.0. It just happens to be him.

Jaylen Brown had a -3.8 on-off this year, but nobody would say he was a bad player this year, quite the opposite!

Again, doesn’t mean he’s great, but looking at On-off just doesn’t work when it comes to evaluating players, especially on the Celtics. He’s got problems but it’s not a fair way to diagnose them.

Rama is not my name, but was the name of my last band. My partner and I had been looking for a name for nine months (Third Rail, Doctopuss, Joe Sent Me were some options) while we were writing tunes and it was starting to look grim a few weeks before our first gig. Then one night I was passing by Bowl-a-Rama on University Place and thought Rama might make a good possibility. I had read the Clarke (sci-fi geek) and vaguely was aware of the Hindu god, though I didn’t know if he was bad or good (good, it turned out). But it was kind of a weird name for a band reviewed as “Soundgarden meets the Beatles” or “Nirvana meets Pink Floyd” so all I did was doodle some logos of it in my notebook. Two days later in rehearsal my partner said, hey, I thought of a name, kind of weird, but what do you think about Rama? I showed him the pages of sketched out logos and that was that.

Not that it ended up mattering. But I kind of adopted it from there as part of my identity. I still think about getting together with my old crew and recording again – the bassist went on tour with the Scorpions and never left, the guitarist moved in to Britney Spears and I lost touch with him, but my partner is in Memphis where he played with Al Green and we’re still tight, so I’d go to Memphis and see if we could take advantage of all this living the last few decades to make better music… It would be nice for Rama to live again before I can’t jump around anymore…

I have the theory that when a role player is on a good team that plays good defense he often looks better than if he is on a worse, less organized team. Grant Williams may not look as good on the Mavericks as he did in Boston.

some reason when i was trying to think of what a sheepdog looked like – i had a picture of a border collie in my mind…just ran in to one of those at petsmart…they got those spooky blue vampire eyes…

just looked at a sheepdog pic…that is one furry critter…i remember as a kid watching this family show with a big ‘ol sheepdog…

the maltipoo used to be really furry, poor thing couldn’t see for shit…speaking of which, a furry bottom ain’t always gonna be your friend…

can’t remember what concert it was but, was running late but needed to do some dog grooming cuz the back blast area wasn’t cleared…

plan is to keep her hair short going forward, so she can see and poop away carefree…

Great story, Rama. Thanks for sharing.

Dogs and bands. A good thread.

Although sorry for your dog’s decline, Z-Man. I haven’t had a dog in a dog’s age (or a few of them), too much travel. Someday perhaps…

Thanks Raven. There are some drawbacks to dog adoption. It’s a very serious commitment. And most have their quirks. But damn, it’s a special kind of love, and it resonates through the family.
