My son’s bar mitzvah was yesterday. (Spoiler: he did awesomely.) Which means we have a bunch of out of town relatives here, including a sister and nephew I haven’t really seen since Covid started, and didn’t see enough pre-pandemic. I couldn’t hang with them much during the reception, and they fly home tonight. But there is a window to get some quality time with them this afternoon — but pretty much exactly when Game 1 tips off. I’ve gotta put family above the Knicks, but… man.
Congrats, Alan! Quite the conundrum. Since the Knicks are doomed anyway, you might be able to dvr the game and show the strength of Samson by avoiding finding out the score until you can watch it ( no KB realtime!)
A good point, Bo. Why bother watching a game where we know the team is doomed?
Great news Alan. Mozel Tov. I remember my bar mitzvah-my sister bought me Abbey Road, which was just released. On to the Knicks. Can you get a stream and record it to watch later? The wife and I aren’t watching it till 5:00 EST.
Congrats Alan. I’m taping it myself because it’s in the middle of the here. I’ll get up, try and avoid the news and then watch it
My DVR will record the game, yes. I’m just not sure I have the willpower to stay off the interwebs until I’ve caught up.
Replying from yesterday
What about the unforgettable Chris Smith?
Congrats to your son, Alan!
The Suns seem to be one of those teams that used up all of their depth to get Durant, so this offseason will be key, to see them add cheap guys on the margins that will have a huge impact. Their MLE guy this season is huge for them. Who will it be? Is there a cromulent 3 out there?
Both the Cavs and Suns are desperate for the exact same stuff: depth and a 3 who won’t get played off the floor at one end. Neither can afford the Middleton/Kuzma/JHart tier. So who would either want that is reasonable out of this group? Jae Crowder got traded for five seconds, and then didn’t even play much, right?

Congrats Alan! Did you slip an invocation for the Knicks into his haphtorah?
“I remember my bar mitzvah-my sister bought me Abbey Road, which was just released.”
Not to mention the Knicks were on the dawn of their first championship season…
Congrats to your son Alan! These kids grow up too fast man. It’s wondrous and terrifying at the same time with how crazy the world is these days. What I’ve learned in life when it comes to spirituality, God, etc, is there are gonna be times where it’s dark. Not too dark to see, but it’s gonna feel like it at times- and you’re not gonna always feel your faith. The important thing to do is trust and believe it’s there even when you don’t see it, and let it lead you to doing the right thing way more often than not. I imagine you’re a proud papa right now.
Now, Alan- this is where you should stop reading my comment lol
As a Knicks fan- what(outside of a chip) could be sweeter than today. After being missing from the postseason for the better part of 20 or so years, we advance to round 2 with home court advantage to face our hated rival. On top of that, our team’s expectations were fairly low this season, and we completed a gentleman’s sweep of a team that was 4 games better than us in the regular season to get to round 2. I barely slept last night. I haven’t been this excited about a Knicks playoff season since 99. I feel bad for my daughter though, because once the game starts today- I’m probably gonna be a completely different person LOL
I have such mixed feelings about Randle possibly playing today. There’s no way that ankle can be anywhere near 100%, right?
I hate matinees but it’s nice to know that our friends across the pond can watch a couple of these games in prime time!
IMO Cavs and Suns did it the wrong way.
If you trade very good players (plural) for an even better player, the incremental gain is often minimal and you typically leave yourself with more work to do. That especially true if one of the players is one sided and overrated and the other old.
The Knicks did it better.
They gave away very little pick value to open space and then added a player that fit their biggest need. That improved the team significantly.
They gave away a 1st round pick and a player that wasn’t playing for a very high level role player that fit perfectly. That improved the team significantly.
If they make another move in the off-season, the preferred scenario would be to use Rose and Fournier to match salaries and picks to send back value. If they have to throw in one young player, so be it. But if you are trying to improve the team now, you should be trying to use picks as currency accompanied by expiring contracts.
Picks are good for teams in total tank mode or maybe serious contenders that are already starting to try to add pieces for the long term future.
That said, the Suns are VERY good. They are not out of that series. The difference last night was what I was hoping would happen when I bet Denver to win it all. I was hoping by playoff time Murray would be back to 100% and turn into bubble Murray and give them an MVP and very high level scorer to go with some other wildcards.
Z–Man, if it’s not hurt too bad, the ankle can be isolated with an air cast. Problem is that his mobility would be compromised, and he could still reinjure it again. If he sprained it good, he probably will not be 100% for at least several weeks. However, the reports do not seem to indicate that he re-injured too badly. Having said this, I am also on the fence about him playing for now.
Randle is wearing a brace in warmups. I think he and alan should sit this one out
Yeah WC, one would think his ankle was heavily taped due to the prior injury when he reinjured it. My sports chiropractor thought by the way he rolled it that it might have been more forward in his foot than his ankle, which would not be as severe…
I guess we’ll find out shortly!
Why are both games so early? Is there some big event this evening? Seems like they’d want the game 7 on at more primer time, no? (Has a local game started at 12:30 all year? That’s not exactly the wheelhouse time for players to give their best performance, market share audience aside)
https://twitter.com/YaronWeitzman
Here’s Julius warming up…when he walks away he still seems to be limping…
Congrats to your son, Alan.
Randle is not elevating much in those warm up shots. Not sure if that’s his normal stance, but I can’t help thinking the ankle is still debilitating him.
Ahhh and Woj just confirms he is out.
We haven’t discussed it but Bam is apparently a bit hobbled by a hammy. He’ll play, but that’s yet another reason to use Obi to pressure him with pace.
Congratulations to your son Alan!
A little bit more than an hour to the game and I’m feeling a little nervous… DOOMED!
Randle’s out but any news about Glue Grimes?
The Randle situation is a frustrating emblem of a stupid fixation on the now. The Knicks would be so, so much better off if he took these two games off. We could likely get a split at MSG, then he could start the series game 3 in Miami after extended healing.
@Alan, congrats to your son. Keep him away from Elaine 😉
I can’t concentrate on anything until tip-off. Go!!!!!!!!!!
“They gave away a 1st round pick and a player that wasn’t playing for a very high level role player that fit perfectly. That improved the team significantly.”
More specifically, a pick that was top-14 protected and that will now convey as as a 23rd pick.
Oh, he’s out. Never mind 🙂
Thanks Z-Man,
I’m back from a frantic football matinee that totally messed up my sunday but I’m capital “P” Pumped for this game…
There are two Game 7’s in the NHL playoffs today so maybe NBA didn’t want to overlap with those games later in the day…so made these games early?
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/36327878/sources-julius-randle-not-expected-play-game-1-knicks
Anxious and pumped, need good RJ and Quickley to step up alongside brunson. Worried we’re going to see constant doubling of brunson, which should open up the floor for RJ. Also need to look for Mitch on the lobs with 4 on 3s
Grimes is ready to play!
Is the game thread doomed?
