The Jets Have Aaron Rodgers, the Knicks Have a Championship … The Wall Street Journal

I just watched the Mitch postgame clip, he says “coming with great energy and stuff like that. Pause” RJ is kind of looking off bored until Mitch says Pause lol, and that kicks off the giggle fit.
Nice brawl in Euroleague playoffs.
The player bodyslammed in the middle of the screen is former NBA Dante Exum…
High grade for the sneaky clothesline on the left of the screen 🙂

Saw that clip of the brawl! Nuts!
Antsy for Julius injury news. And Grimes, for that matter. We need all hands on deck to overcome Playoff Jimmy. And even then, we’re doomed.
Alan, it’s time to be honest about this. We aren’t overcoming Playoff Jimmy.
Jimmy is busy game planning for Playoff RJ 😉
You cut that out right this minute, KBA. We are doomed to lose at the hands of Playoff Jimmy, and anyone who wants to suggest otherwise had best head over to P&T or RealGM or Macri’s Substack. Capiche?
Hahaha. Of course I mean Jimmy will game plan so well for Playoff RJ that we are DOOMED.
Much better!
DOOM
I’m in a relaxing mood until sunday morning.
Julius and Glue have time to heal, pundits spit their predictions, Thibs refines his strategy… and anyway we’re DOOMED, so why worry?
For some reason, the Knicks/Heat games are all listed at being at 1pm (like on Tuesday). That’s just a transcription error, right?
“and anyway we’re DOOMED, so why worry?”
Helpful mantra, thanks
No one’s used to winning. People at MSG are all like “what the f is going on?” I’m loving it but my poor heart can’t take it.
Mitchell Robinson had a game last run, no? We’re good at a lot of positions. I think we’re better than MIA but we probably won’t win because, of course, we’re doomed!
On the one hand, this is a promising example of Tommy Beer’s Small Sample Size Theater:
On the other, JHart wasn’t guarding Playoff Jimmy. So, as you know… doomed.
Old Testament additions to the roster in 2023: Joshua Hart at the trade deadline and Jeremiah right before the playoffs. And keeping with the theme, they got us out of purgatory.
Are you thinking of Isaiah Roby?
Katz agreeing with the Hive Mind on RJ:
But the 22-year-old transforming into a genuine No. 2 option alongside Brunson was about more than just the shots he took. It also was about the ones that never left his fingertips at all.
For years, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau has insisted Barrett’s path to improve his shooting percentages does not require becoming a better perimeter marksman or adding more touch around the basket. It’s about reading the game better on his drives. Too often, Barrett will loft a floater over a triple-team, even though the presence of three defenders surrounding him should signal that someone is open on the perimeter.
But those overzealous quick triggers didn’t happen during the final three games in the Cavs series.
Anonymous coach, scout, and exec all giving the nod to the Knicks in the upcoming series. They have no clue we’re DOOMED.
Just want to say one thing… we’re in the 2nd round and i’m happy! 🙂
A quick shout out to past posters Dude and ephus, who I know are enjoying what is happening from wherever they are now perched.
Ok, which coach is reading Knickerblogger?
Or maybe the coach is a poster here. 😀
I’m sure Thibs has a good gameplan for Jimmy+some severe regression shooting wise. Hart/Grimes will be on him for 48 mins which they’ve defended him well.
No Herro is huge offensively since he was their only reliable pull up shooter
Sounds like Grimes is good to go for game 1, hopefully bodes well for slowing down Butler. Randle seems pretty limited, wouldn’t be surprised if he missed it.
I think we can pull out a win without him, but I primarily worry about Brunson getting gassed as our lone shot creator. Please stay with us Star J!
+1000 @Bernie
Thibs being Butler’s Pygmalion coach may helps a bit
Jimmy is gonna put the moves on Elaine.
All that is true but Occam’s Razor suggests RJ is playing better because he’s playing more without Randle.
And that’s fine, btw! If we get good RJ when Randle is hurt, that’s a huge plus. I just don’t think there is a version of the Knicks where we can get peak Randle and peak RJ together.
In fact that’s a great question for chatgptmilo: how often have the two of them ever had elite game scores together?
Begley: “Julius Randle went through limited practice today, just shooting, lifting and cardio in the pool, Tom Thibodeau says. Thibodeau says they will take it day by day with Randle. As you’d think, there is no definitive timetable for his return at this point.”
More Obi time, sounds like.
Grimes coming back strong would be big. Every body we can throw at Playoff Jimmy helps make the eventual defeat more honorable.
I’d need to dig into the lineup data but I think RJ has played a lot without Randle this season. Particularly in the 2nd quarter, there are a lot of in game stretches where Randle goes to the bench and RJ plays as the primary ball handler and scorer with the bench and we was still terrible.
There’s this:
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10068634-julius-randle-rj-barrett-impress-fans-in-knicks-win-over-dangelo-russell-lakers#:~:text=Julius%20Randle%20and%20RJ%20Barrett%20stepped%20up%20to,as%20the%20Knicks%20snapped%20a%20three-game%20losing%20streak.
N = 1? How’s that for stats…
The thing that worries me about Miami is their shooting. The big problem we had during the season was coming too far off shooters on defense.
This wasn’t a problem with the Cavs because they have basically zero shooting. The Heat, however, can really space the floor and make it tough to help and funnel players to Mitchell & Hartenstein in the middle.
Utterly convinced that Strus and Robinson will doom us.
League average 3PT% this year was .361, and the Heat were well below that at .344, fourth worst mark in the league. Their best three point shooter is Herro at .378 and he is of course not playing. Take out Herro and the rest of the team shot .335 from 3PT in the regular season.
They’re shooting what seems to be an unsustainable .450 from 3PT so far in the playoffs. They did this against a team that was quite good at limiting 3PT% in the regular season, so something’s gotta give.
Then again, we are doomed so bombs away I guess.
Well Strus and Lowrey average ~37% from three for their careers, while Duncan averages almost 40%.
I’m not worried about Duncan Robinson, he’ll certainly bring doom, i’ll give you that, but it’ll be doom for the Knicks on offense and for the Heat on defense. He’s lucky there’s no Worst Defensive Player of the Year, because he’d be a strong candidate every year.
RJ gonna be key. Yes, they have shooters, but there’s a reason they were on the bench. If Duncan R gets pt, we have to abuse him. And that’s either RJ or Grimes.
I can confirm ThisChicanery’s suspicions. RJ was actually markedly worse with Randle off the court this year–49.3% TS in 695 minutes.
that is a toast worthy sentiment for sure BernieEarnie…well said indeed…
fear indeed does have a name, but it’s: kevin love
Man that was a tough fucking performance by the Knigs.
Yeah, I really didn’t think the Kings had this in them, showed a lot of toughness winning this game on the road. Jordan Poole helped a lot by being awful, but they won with many important players like Sabonis, Barnes and Murray playing pretty badly. Let’s hope they can close out at home.
This is irrelevant, though.
The argument is not “RJ can do this any time Randle isn’t on the court.”
What I’m thinking is:
a) the acquisition of Josh Hart and his elite rebounding skill has unlocked Thibs’ willingness to adopt lineup combinations that don’t feature two non-shooting bigs,
and b) RJ playing with Brunson and in these new spread lineups is the thing that’s unleashed him.
If you put Randle back in, out goes one of the guards, and there goes the spacing needed to get RJ going downhill.
I doubt there’s any evidence to either refute or corroborate the theory, frankly, because it’s brand spanking new. Thibs is doing something in the playoffs that he never did in the regular season, and it’s fucking awesome, innit?
Bravo, coach.
Sigh. Woj said last night that, “”Julius Randle’s ankle will need to improve considerably to play Sunday.”
We can win without him. We’ve seen that. But Playoff Jimmy would have had to work really hard to help defend against a bigger and stronger guy. Without that, we’re obviously doomed.
Are you thinking of Isaiah Roby?
Then that makes 3 additions: Joshua, Isaiah, and of course Jeremiah.
