2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Jazz, Who Are Asking the Knicks, ‘Oh, is being good hard?’

The Knicks head to Utah to take on the Jazz, who are hilariously better than the Knicks despite trying NOT to be, while the Knicks are bad while trying to be good. That’s pretty darn funny.

Anyhow, the bloom must eventually come off of the rose for the Jazz’s miracle season, so I am assuming that it will happen tonight, as you know the Knicks are going to win some surprising games to make sure that Thibs never ever gets fired, right? So I figure tonight will be one of those surprise wins.

Let’s go, Knicks!

I just need the Knicks to beat the Nuggets tomorrow so I can rub it in my friends’ face. I guess winning tonight would also be good.

i said something on the defunct thread that included a free sbf reference for the first 5 clickers

@ptmilo,

Can you design some crypto fraud for all of us at KB? I’d like to not work anymore and I’m like 95% sure you’re Satoshi Nakamoto

May root for the Jazz tonight as a thank you to the LDS Church for its statement tonight.

Brandon Clarke also better than Randle

What the duck is Alvarado doing taunting Morant

Obi, IQ, Sims, Cam (!), Grimes: More minutes, please.

All decisions should be made to maximize this result only.

Win, lose, playoffs, doesn’t matter. More data.

well i can say with some authority that if the bored ape brahs had taken five minutes to google tom thibodeau there would be no nft bear market

I’m assuming Brian wants to lose this game, because he tried real hard cronining the win. 😀
Gooooo Knicks!

friend of mine was at the Dubs game last night and got a Poole bobblehead sponsored by FTX. . .probably the last bobblehead they sponsor for a while

As for the crypto stuff, I have no idea what you are saying PT. It’s like Sanskrit. But I am excited for the Michael Lewis book that is coming. Although the guy on Twitter was right. If he spent six months with SBF and didn’t know what was happening I don’t want to read the book. And ditto if he did. There is something to that.

Still reading the book though.

Re-posting from last thread:

…I’m gonna nominate Talen Horton Tucker for tonight’s Lord Sumner Award. He’s been shooting like crap all season, tonight he goes 5-7 from 3 and puts up 30.

We may need a poll on which beard is more disruptive to the communal sense of wellbeing, Thibs or Breen.

I like THT for the Sumner as well. Agbaji doesnt seem offensive enough but maybe this is his night to shine.

Much better D so far. Except for the Olynyk three, where Randle was like, fuck it, maybe I can get a rebound…

‘RJ with the usual forced prayer floater. That shit just has to stop.’

Agreed. That should be scored as a turnover. And a missed shot.

Sims on pace for around 30 rebounds…

owen, i’m a bit lower on michael lewis than most normal ppl from semi-personal experience but i’ll still snap read the book when it drops.

we started out with that post players only mtg energy but not much else.

Watching Olynyk and the other Jazz pass, and Randle, Cam, and Barrett driving blindly to the basket (or hoisting random three pointers) is making me sad.

Wally: “…right now they’re making some uncharacteristic mistakes and turnovers…”

What team has he been watching all year?

I have t enjoyed his recent books as much but this one is going to be a banger. Would love to hear your semi personal story sometime also.

These fast break miscues are galling. defense seems better.

IQ is fun to watch defend. Everyone is talking about it now but it’s a real thing.

Also, Fontechio has to have some Sumner potential. What a name. Kessler too although he isn’t that obscure perhaps.

I would love Walker Kessler on the Knicks.

Like David Lee with defense but with a name that makes him sound like a reliever for the Braves.

Sims! That was nice

Funny-ugly game, but at least nobody’s done anything brain-numbingly stupid in the last few minutes.

Shooting 27% from three isn’t going to cut it, however.

Yep, IQ has really been everywhere. Love it.

Sexton is super fast. Didn’t appreciate thst.

Hope Brunson isn’t hurt.

Brunson is an amazing post player. Didn’t realize that.

Brunson out there with IQ, Obi, Sims, Cam. Thank you, Thibs.

And now Randle is back. Oof.

Obi to Sims for the slam.

Plus Sims has been playing good help D. Hope he stays in for a while.

Knicks claw back from a deficit and take the lead due to gritty D and good team ball.

Thibs: Good time to put Cam and Julius back in!

Per basketball-reference, Randle has 271 points on 196 attempts for 1.38 points per attempt while Obi has 131 points on 104 attempts for 1.26 points per attempt.
How many of those points come from FTs?

Honestly, I have no idea. My intuitive impression is that Randle shoots more free throws than Obi, and since shots on which you get fouled don’t count as shot attempts, this might explain why Randle’s points per possession is higher than Obi’s. I don’t think this is the perfect statistic and it has noise. But it’s still thought provoking.

Cam Reddish may be the biggest ball hog I’ve ever seen, but he does have great body control at the basket.

Reddish’s career poor finishing numbers compared to how pretty his layups are is good anti eye test propaganda

Most big guys look like stretched out, elongated humans, but Sims just seems proportioned like a regular 6′ guy who was made on a 3-D printer at 1.3x

Hartenstein on a mission to get Sims into the lineup.

Cam: The playground giveth and the playground taketh away.

Conley literally grabbed Brunson’s arm on that

And then Julius makes a case for starting Obi in the third quarter

Kind of funny after all Mitch’s fouling problems we got him two backups who are as foul happy as he is

Great finish to the quarter.

Obi made almost all of that happen. Obi … must … play.

Great finish. I can only watch the 1st half, as it’s very late here, and i did my part. Don’t lose this, guys. See you tomorrow.

Few things are more certain in this world than Thibs winning just enough games for the Knicks to never fire him. He will die as the Knicks coach.

I’d love for the last-second Brunson three to be the start of something real, but well… Randle, Barrett, and Cam are still on the roster. So not so much.

about to type the guys are showing glimpses of good play and then Randle has two egregious turnovers in a row. rrrrrrrr.

Man, a Sophie’s Choice between Randle and RJ would be tough for all the wrong reasons.

I love the Island of Misfit Toys energy from Utah.

Watching the Pelicans and Griz earlier, they both have tons of intriguing young talent.

Utah has tons of picks.

Either way is a good way to rebuild.

Decent dancers. I guess in a region where jazz is so important culturally, we shouldn’t be surprised.

Kessler looks way more mobile than he did at Auburn. There were rumors he was working intensely on his athleticism but I wrote them off as typical draft smoke. Nope, dude looks great.

Can’t buy a shot, but the Knicks aren’t making it easy for themselves. Just NO passing at all. Force another shot, RJ?

Trying to figure out WHAT the fuck Barrett is doing, then looked at the box. Only 14 points, he needs that last six.

Please stop pumping Reddish MSG

WAlly has been ok. Bearable anyway.

And yeah, IQ has been fantastic

“Cam Reddish doing a little bit of everything” has more then only positive meanings

Knicks claw back from a deficit with great D and lovely team play and once again take the lead.

This must mean it’s time for Randle, Barrett, and Cam…

Absolutely love seeing IQ show out. Dude is far and away our best player along with Brunson

Toppin out?! How many turnovers from Randle to close it out? There’s a foul before I even post.

There is a clever meme someone more clever than I will post vis a vis what has to happen for RJ to actually make a layup.

And I wouldn’t bring back Randle. Obi rolling

Only thing I can think of is Obi is winded because he literally never, ever stops moving. Doubt it though. Inexcusable.

Said it already but how people don’t appreciate Brunson more I don’t know

Never fails, immediate charge call on Ualen. Whatever

Great game. And yeah, time for Fournier to ride the pine. Team is so much better without him.

Barrett to Brunson at the end of the game, as the clock runs out:

What were you thinking taking all those shots? Now I’m stuck at 18!!”

Randle: 31 min 5/11, 2/6 three, 3/3ft, 6boards, 1asst, 1blk, 4TO, -13, 15pts
Toppin: 18 min 3/4, 3/4 three, 6boards,4asst, +23, 9pts

smh

If they give this effort every game, they really should win a lot of games. It’s what makes it so depressing when you see how little they try in other games.

I don’t know if it’s true but I heard RJ has been playing while sick the last two games. I hope that’s his excuse. If so, too many minutes tonight. It’s not like he was playing well.

Hey, a win’s a win, esp. on the road. But also Utah looks like they’ve come back down hard to earth.

Utah is better than the expectations but not as good as their start. Good win though. It’s not easy to win in Utah. It was smart to go there early and get used to the elevation.

The Kings are playing quite well. They more or less got screwed out of 2 more wins on horrible calls down the stretch of tight games.

“If they give this effort every game, they really should win a lot of games. It’s what makes it so depressing when you see how little they try in other games.”

I know the Jazz have a gaudy record and all, but they are really not all that good. Still, this was a nice bounceback win, definitely enjoyed the effort on both ends.

Unsung hero: Jericho Sims. He’s doing more and more Ben Wallace things out there.

“Unsung hero: Jericho Sims. He’s doing more and more Ben Wallace things out there.”

For sure. And IQ was out at the end b/c of fouls, but he had a very strong game.

Back to back from Utah to Denver is a killer. Don’t be shocked if they come up totally empty tomorrow. Even if Jokic is out they may be up against it.

CAM > RJ

His D is improving rapidly. Next he needs to get more aggressive on the boards. Keeper

What a steal for a garbage pick!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

“I don’t know if it’s true but I heard RJ has been playing while sick the last two games. I hope that’s his excuse. If so, too many minutes tonight. It’s not like he was playing well.”

He has passophobia.

I just don’t know how Reddish just doesn’t stumble into more rebounds, he looks so big and strong. I’m liking him this year, yes, a lot of the same issues are still there in his game, but he seems to be accepting his role well and playing hard, which is good enough to be a pretty decent rotation piece.

RJ’s line is so depressing on the other hand, how can a player shoot 14 free throws, take 18 shots and only score 18 points???? That’s just unacceptable. Overall a nice win anyway, the Jazz might be crashing down to earth but it still wasn’t an easy game.

If the end of last’s seasons offensive Quick ever reappears (hopefully he’s slowly turning the corner) we might have a legit all-star on our hands. He’s turned into a fantastic defender. There’s no way he shouldn’t be playing 30 minutes a night. Obviously there has to be some adjustment to the Obi/Randle minutes and maybe less obviously- if the Knicks are going to a nine man rotation maybe Cam deserves the extra minutes playing with the bench guys rather than RJ? Cam is such a rollercoaster but his defense has been much more consistent lately. I’m guessing RJ’s TS% is back below .520 and he’s never going to stop shooting- Cam’s more than occasional invisibility is preferable to that.

Also, I thought Cam actually moved the ball well tonight; guys just missed. His work (or non-work) on the boards really does need to improve.

Any road win is a good win.

I don’t think Cam is particularly strong, seems that his length is his major advantage, and he does seem to hang in the air pretty well. What impresses me most is how well he finishes. Usually when he gets in trouble it before he gets well into his move. But the dexterity and length are elite and once he gets around the rim he’s tough to stop. He’s not George Gervin or anything, but some of his finishes are really uncanny.

On defense, his length really stands out. He’s like a bigger version of Frank. Blocks, strips, closing off passing lanes, closing out on 3’s…he’s a presence beyond his box score stats.

I wouldn’t say he’s a keeper just yet, his blooper reel is just as impressive as his highlights. But he gives us something that other teams have in spades…a long, rangy guy who can be really disruptive on both ends at all 3 levels.

I said before the season that he’s the only player on our team with th physical tools to become a superstar….obviously the odds of him making it to that level are like 10,000 to 1, but they are not *zero* like they are for everyone else on the roster. It will be interesting to see where he tops out, whether here or somewhere else.

Whoever predicted that Obi would be shooting 42.3% from 3 on his first 59 attempts, please raise your hand…

(thing is, it kind of looks sustainable!)

I think the Jazz may not be coming back to earth. I heard this was their third game in four nights and they may have just run out of gas at the end.

I know we all want Mitch back asap, but man, if it sends Sims back into mothballs, I’m gonna be kinda sad. I just love watching him wreck shit in the paint…

“I think the Jazz may not be coming back to earth. I heard this was their third game in four nights and they may have just run out of gas at the end.”

That’s still 3 losses in a row, and they caught some good teams at the right time. I think they’re not “bad” as in tanking, but they are probably not getting out of the play-in. Kessler can only take them so far….

“(thing is, it kind of looks sustainable!)”

Just to elaborate, he is now 25 for 59 this year, and 31 for 76 after last year’s all-star break. That’s 56 for his last 135 for 41.5%

Still a smallish sample size, but definitely enough to grab one’s attention

owen, i’m a bit lower on michael lewis than most normal ppl from semi-personal experience but i’ll still snap read the book when it drops.

I was out after his “the market is rigged bc frontrunning exists”.
