2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Stupid Nets – How “Cool” Are the Nets Now, KD?

The Knicks head to stupid Brooklyn to take on the stupid Nets and their stupid superstar player, Kevin Durant, who hilariously is probably miserable with the Nets right now, as his stupid fellow superstar, Kyrie Irving, is suspended due to an inability to say “The Holocaust was not faked by Bill Gates and Michelle Obama,” so the Knicks head into Brooklyn off of a big win over the stupid Minnesota Timberwolves (who I bet will be firing their coach like the Nets any day now) while the Nets have a worse record than the Knicks, which is hilariously awesome.

Suck it, KD, you dummy!

HOW’S MY WIN PREDICTION GOING? I am feeling pretty good – my whole prediction was on the Knicks being a roughly .500 win team that will beat up on tanking teams later (as well as stupid teams like the stupid Nets) to get to 49, and that looks like it is precisely what is happening!

Stupid Nets.

Let’s go, Knicks!

Copied from the last thread.

I just turned on ESPN. I listened for about 2 minutes. Then Stephen A. Smith talked.

I muted the game.

Grimes is available, whatever that means…

That’s simple. It either means he starts or he plays zero minutes.

“That’s simple. It either means he starts or he plays zero minutes.”

…or he comes in for garbage time and gets frozen out by a 20-seeking RJ?

There’s an absurd number of Js in our staying lineup, 32 scrabble points in Js alone.

We’ve got more Js in our initials than we hit during a game.

“We’ve got more Js in our initials than we hit during a game.”

Only if geo isn’t watching…

Let hope RJ comes into this game relaxed and just accepts what the game gives him instead of trying to prove something in a big game on national TV and going 3 for 18. That would be a nice baby step.

Kyrie apparently the worst defensive player in the NBA this year. So they have that going for them.

The latest installment in the never ending conflict….good vs. evil.

Go Knicks!

I’m worried after Randle’s shooting night in Minny…

Interestingly, the Nets kept the last 3 opponents under 100 points…

Big game for the Knicks, with a win tonight they should be able to go into the west coast trip next week at 8-5.

Apparently Durant is better than Cam.

And Sims doing baby monster things!

Pretty amazing I have three broadcast teams to choose from tonight.

Not that there is a real choice to be made

liked that move from randle, three wasnt dropping so he took inside strong and drew the foul

Ugggghhhh. How I want to beat these guys. Until we get a player of Durant’s caliber on this team we’ll be also-rans.

Pretty pathetic start, inexistent defense and horrible offense.
Good job starters, good job…

Our help defense is the cause of the open looks from 3, maybe stop doing it to check if the results are better would be a good idea.

You knew the Nets would be pumped for this game. We have to settle down and slowly work our way back into the game.

Don’t know what’s happening with DRose, but he’s not a good player right now

I’m really glad that the starters sucked incredibly badly and Thibs stuck with them because fuck it, adding only Rose who appears to have turned into Biden.

Missed the first quarter, looks like Randle is still hot, but twitter is pretty furious about his defense.

The first quarter was a clown show.
We came to this game totally unprepared to match the expected energy from a team that fired the coach last week… brutal

Don’t get fooled by Randle offensive line, he hijacked the offense and was a lazy matador on defense…

Agreed on Randle.

I feel like that was Fournier’s first in rhythm assisted three of the season. Good to see

Did I briefly see Obi and Randle out there together *with* Hart?

Was that on purpose or just end of quarter shenanigans?

I am actually very curious to see if that would work, so ?

I feel like that was Fournier’s first in rhythm assisted three of the season. Good to see

Yes. I’ve been screaming this from the island, but no one will pass to him.

Evan suddenly understands — I’m on the second unit, I can shoot whenever I want and nobody will yell at me.

Randle took as many shots as the other starters combined, plus a possession that ended with (missed) FTs plus 2 TOs and 2 AST.
His usage was over 50%.
I was wrong, he didn’t hijack it, he kidnapped it… 🙂

We have maybe 5 players who aren’t ass this game. We should try playing those players together….

Fournier can shoot us right out of this game… he hit a few… and then…. Who am I kiddin, the entire team can shoot us out if this game …. Are we a bottom 5 jump shooting team ?

“Stay cool, this is all a plan to make a big comeback on the 3rd quarter”

Exactly. Brooklyn can’t shoot 57% the whole game.

Rose missed a LOT of time last year and played very little in pre season. Plus, he’s not getting any younger. It’s going to take some time for him to get his stroke back.

Honestly, this is the kind of game the 90s Knicks would slow down with a few hard fouls. Just to, you know, re-set.

What is clear, early this season, is that the Knicks need to work on perimeter defense.

Both Toppin and Barrett did miss incredible easy layups…

I’m in a bad mood and I need a bunch of scapegoats:
the fact that there’s always a scrub that kill us tell me a lot about our coaching staff…

“Toppin is a goddamn gazelle”

Obi is the only player we have that actually outclasses the opposition with physical gifts. All the rest of our guys are strivers.

I blame this on Thibs. He should have called like 20 timeouts by now.

So Randle has 19 points on 11 shots, 6 rebounds and 2 assists and he’s the problem?

smh

Was this the worst half of the season, or merely just as bad as the second half of the Atlanta game?

Boy, I was just watching that Randle strip and Brooklyn three in slow motion…

I think the last two minutes sealed the deal. At least in the Atlanta game it was a legit All-Star in Murray who torched us, not Evan Sumner

Yeah, this is a real test of Thibs. It’s not enough to just shout, “Work, work, work, work.” He’s gotta give the guys something they can go to that *will* work.

Let Durant beat us by going off for 30, or Curry, but at least get our guys with their heads up trying to do what they’re supposed to do. It’s no shame to lose to a better squad. It’s a shame if this is the *way* we lose.

Anybody remember the last time that Reddish grabbed a rebound…or had an assist? He makes Frank Ntilikina look like a stat stuffer.

Just make Randle a spot up shooter, already?

I just checked. In his last 5 games (counting tonight), covering 105 minutes, Reddish has a mere 2 rebounds.

How is that even possible?

Not defending Reddish or anything, but other than a few 3’s by Randle, the entire team totally sucked ass.

Not really the night to be singling anyone out.

Sorry, but here’s more. In the last 1.5 games (37 minutes) for Cam Tumbleweed, he has 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks. Hey, but also 0 turnovers.
🙂

Perfect time to jump back in to “The Defeat of Imperial Germany, 1917-1918,” and see what Black Jack Pershing is up to.

The one thing the Knicks have going for them is that now, more than ever, the truism of “It’s the NBA, everyone makes a run” is very real. My weirdo gambler brother makes a killing with “ten point lead but then loss” bets.

The Nets are definitely stupid.

But it’s kind of a blessing to watch Kevin Durant play basketball.

Still.

Gonna be hard to come back from 25 down when the other team has a player who can score at will.

But it’s kind of a blessing to watch Kevin Durant play basketball.

Still.

Definitely. He’s one amazingly talented douchebag.

Barrett drive and pass to nobody!

Not even to someone on the other team. Just nobody.

JR Barrett: “I see dead people.”

Cam has a rebound and a foul in 15 minutes. Do we still think he should be starting because of his man to man defense

I think it’s a case where Thibs just wanted Fournier out of the starting lineup. He wanted it to be Grimes, but until he’s healthy, Reddish will fill in as the non-Fournier guy.

“My weirdo gambler brother makes a killing with “ten point lead but then loss” bets.”

Is your brother Justin Cronin?

Quickley is right there on the bench. Fuck it play Aricidiacono, he can probably grab a couple rebounds.

“ I’d never even heard of Edmond Sumner”

Fun fact: Gordon Sumner is Sting’s real name

Is your brother Justin Cronin

No, but close enough that I thought you got his name right at first! 🙂

C’mon! This group making a run. Sims starting to look comfortable.

Stop hanging your heads, Knicks. Move the ball.

Quickley is right there on the bench. Fuck it play Aricidiacono, he can probably grab a couple rebounds.

I don’t disagree, but I just think that this is the role Thibs has pegged for them.

Get it the teens before the fourth and we’ll really have a game!

Shit, I guess it should be the Edmond Sumner Award. Which honestly is better than Evan.

RJ really nettles me.

Durant actually does play some good defense. Stuffed him good there. And has 11 assists.

Durant played really good defense against Luka the other night. It didn’t really work but he was putting in a lot more effort than he normally does in the regular season.

We’re gonna get this down to like 6 late in the 4th quarter and then Durant will close it out

E4’s miss and Brunson’s. Those are the ones that hurt. Oh, and RJ’s FTs. WTF? Oh, and E4’s turnover. It’s too much…..

Since he’s dumb, but wildly talented, and does his business in Brooklyn, I’m going to refer to KD as Vinny Barbarino.

Well, i don’t know why i’m still losing my sleep over this. See you tomorrow people, for the typical trade everybody thread after a loss.

Didn’t like Brunson PGmaking during the drought, he missed the open man (first Toppin, then RJ) and took bad shots in two consecutive possessions…

Just a terrible game for too many players…

Before Randle came back, I was hoping Obi would at least take it to the hoop a few times, just to get the reps, even, but no go.

Cam — 0-7
Brunson — 4-14
Barrett — 5-14
IQ — 1-6
Rose — 0-4

Why are we losing?

Well at least Max will have an easy recap, F’s for everyone.

I’ll try to work on the nuances… 🙂

Actually thought Sims was a bright spot. I wish he was getting more run now, just for the reps. We’re down a million.

That Brunson three landed on the rim like a bag of dog poop thrown from a car.

In the immortal notes of the Baha Men:

Who wants the Coach out?
Who, who, who, who, who?

It’s a long season the boys were probably up too late last night watching the election returns.

The Sweat Hogs would at least have an excuse if they didn’t score 80 (provided by Epstein’s mother, of course).

Sumner and Curry are 14-22 with 9 threes. I feel like we have gotten killed by this player type all year.

The Nets don’t miss Kyrie

This has been the least enjoyable game of the season. I haven’t enjoyed watching one minute of it. Miserable all the way around.

Has Walt tried to pronounce my new favorite players name?

I don’t know how to spell it

I was positive that Vaughn was going to be a great coach… and then he wasn’t. But maybe he’s learned some stuff! He was okay filling in for Atkinson.

I switched over to Andor at halftime and it was awesome. I hope Alan writes about it.

Maybe having us shoot 32% overall, 28% from three, and 66% from the FT line is all Vaughan. Or maybe we just sucked.

I was reading the thread and thought to myself “who the hell is Evan Sumner”, then I realized his name was Edmond and I still have no idea.

I guess we can’t beat Ben Simmons, 15 straight loss to a team employing him.

Yep, was watching Andor instead of the election. It’s so much better than the other Star Wars stuff. Not perfect but very enjoyable.

And sorry Bruno. Edmond not Evan. I clearly hadn’t heard of him either.

Ido think the E Sumner Award ESA is going to be a good shorthand for us going forward.

Cory Joseph could be the guy. Maybe isaiah Livers though since I have no idea who he is.

I think we all know what happened tonight—Jacques Vaughn is the greatest coach of all-time and we deserve zero blame

Randle was the only starter who could score and he was still terrible.

Everyone gets Fs.

Except Svi—I love you and you’ve never done anything wrong, ever!

Sims actually has the best plus minus of any of the starters by far, and I’m not sure why. Maybe he actually defended well? Can anyone comment?

Lawrence Frank started out great as a Nets coach and is now out of coaching. I think we have wait a little before anointing Vaughn a good coach

Jazz are 10-3

I love the NBA

It’s funny, but then you remember we just assumed Danny Ainge wanted to tank. Instead he went out and got good players.

Not only do the Jazz have a million draft picks and a promising young coach…they actually have a better roster of current players than we do, too!

Must be nice to have a smart GM.

Sims played garbage minutes. Everyone else there was positive so that was partially it

Cam move has bombed. Grimes was available but he chose to play him in garbage time only.

Not starting Hart and playing him 35 minutes is irrational. Knicks were down 25 at the half and Hart was still +1 with 10 minutes played. Which means that in the 14 minutes he was on the bench Knicks were minus 26.

Thibs leaves me scratching my head.

By 20 games this should be another chalk loss. But getting blown out this frequently is a bigger red flag.

Sims played garbage minutes. Everyone else there was positive so that was partially it

But he started. That is the definition of non garbage time.

OKC and Mil going at it. I will never believe Poku is an actual real NBA player rather than a visitor from a strange corner of the multiverse.

Knick fan, if Sims was in there for garbage time and the other starters weren’t that would explain why his plus minus would be better than the rest of them.

I didn’t watch the second half, but what stood out in the first was how dreadful the offensive movement was when the starters were in. Cam can’t/won’t playmake and Sims isn’t much of a threat to score and that seemed to take any flow out of the offense. It was all just guys going one on one into the defense.

Yes, but playing in those garbage minutes with the others lifted him a couple points. It’s not about garbage time it’s just looking at the other garbage time players and seeing they were all net positive. So playing garbage time minutes likely improved his plus-minus and not the other starters since they didn’t play then.

Sims improved his plus-minus by 5 in garbage time. He was still -12 (5 better than Cam’s -17, the next best starter), but garbage time is part of the explanation.

RAPTOR(small sample) hates Randle, even after last game. He’s the worst rotation player* at -5.2 Total RAPTOR—worse than Fournier, even on defense. Thinking Randle might still look bad after tonight.

RJ, Cam, & Mitch are below average.

Randle & Fournier are awful.

*not counting Sims who has really only played 1 game before tonight is included.

Randle did some dumb things out there, but he still had 24 points on 15 shots and 11 rebounds. Our two C’s were meh. Everyone else was putrid. Cam, Obi, IQ, Rose, and Fournier were a combined 5-33. Add in marksmen RJ and Brunson and you get a combined 14-61, includes 5-29 from 3.

I’m officially buying Lauri Markannen stocks, he has been playing so well. This whole Jazz team is fun to watch especially because all the players who were dumped in the trades so that the Jazz could tank seem so pissed about it, like they all have a huge collective chip on their shoulders because they were thrown away to match salaries.

On the plus side, GMs are probably going to be more interested in Randall’s 3pt% (now up to 35%) than his RAPTOR. It just takes one desperate GM people! If he has a 20/10 line with decent three point % at the deadline maybe he’s movable. Of course if he’s putting up a reasonably efficient 20/10 the Knicks won’t move him unless the team has totally collapsed.

The thing about Ainge is that he’s so stubborn that he wasn’t going to ever tank for the sake of tanking. He’d only tank if people gave him value for the players he wanted to deal. He’s obsessed with getting value for his assets. And if they win instead, that’s just what he’ll do. He’s kind of fascinating that way. We saw the same exact thing play out with Rondo. He only traded him when he got a great deal from Dallas, even though his strong first half pushed the Celtics to 40-42 and a first round exit in what looked to be a great draft.

Marjon Beauchamp for Julius Randle on the same contract? Who says no?

Walker Kessler 6-6 tonight but a -11. His stat line is quite gaudy so far. Like insanely good.

And Ben in Indiana is mathurin nicely

Of course if he’s putting up a reasonably efficient 20/10 the Knicks won’t move him unless the team has totally collapsed.

That’s an amusing problem. If he ever plays well enough to be traded, they’ll never trade him.

Quickley’s regression this season is really alarming, he’s literally forgotten how to shoot a basketball

Hard to believe that our high post passing center has a lower assist rate than Mitch! Hart has been fine but the shooting/passing hopes everyone had upon his signing look like pipe dreams. Still early though.

I think Hart has been pretty good, overall, but he really doesn’t seem like he’s a guy who’s going to make a leap, ya know? This seems sort of who he is, for good or for bad (and in general, it’s been good).

Against really big centers Hart sometimes doesn’t seem physical enough. But he’s still skilled rebounder and can score, he just score with floaters and three pointers rather than being physical inside. he’s worth backup money, for sure. I think he could improve. He could get better positioning some times. On the Knicks he doesn’t have a lot of cutters to pass to and that maybe holding his passing back.

Quickley’s regression this season is really alarming, he’s literally forgotten how to shoot a basketball

One reason can be that he’s thinking too much, normally he’d shoot the ball the moment he sees an opening, and now he thinks about it, but then he holds the ball to keep searching for a better play or shot. I don’t think this is working, he’s a pure shooter like a Jamal Crawford, let him shoot right away and live with the results. If he’s feeling it, keep him in, if not, take him out. Still projects as a 6th man type, the end of last season good PG play probably was in part the competition not being fully committed to stop him, with some teams tanking and others already thinking about the playoffs.
