Led by LeBron James’s example, a generation of young players is getting shredded, and making sure the cameras are always rolling.

This article makes me certifiably giddy. Did we finally land the 2nd round steal on the level of DeAndre Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Mark Price, Paul Millsap, Draymond Green, Isaiah Thomas, Manu Ginobili, Marc Gasol, Nikola Jokic, Toni Kukoc, Jeff Hornacek, Hassan Whiteside and many others? And did we really lock him up on a team-friendly 4-year deal?
I wholeheartedly agree with his trainer Marcell Scott’s prediction…“I honestly think at the halfway mark, at the All-Star break, Mitch will be starting.’’
…on his way to a sensational career.
The Warriors’ motion offense isn’t even the best thing I see on a basketball court during a Warriors game. Their defense is fucking beautiful. Most of the blow-the-game-open runs they go on are when Draymond decides no one is going to score for the next 5 minutes and the resultant transition offense that comes from them racing down the court after a defensive stop.
Z-man,
That is the most optimistic post of yours I’ve ever read. But I think the posting and toasting article could be right that he needs seasoning in G-League. The Knicks are thinking about this too since they sent their G-league coach to see him. It seems to be a question of how fast he will pick up things he hasn’2t had to do before.
Crazy that the Lakers were supposed to be drafting Mitch at 25. I think Moritz is unlikely to outperform.
Too bad, LeBron would have loved him!
@3 I see no reason yet to put him in the G-League until it becomes clear that he is not NBA-ready (e.g. he fouls out in 5 minutes in preseason games. I would rather give him a chance to play the same way he did in summer league (concentrate on what he does well…rebound, play D and dunk) and then send him down for 2-3 games here and there to work on his offense. He will have ample time with the coaching staff to work on maintaining position and refining his defensive fundamentals (especially things like lunging and reaching) between now and the start of the regular season. His O doesn’t matter at all right now.
But if they do decide to start him there and keep him there for an extended period, good for me! I live a stone’s throw from the home of the Westchester Knicks and can pay $20 to see him live and up close!
The point of the P&T article is that he’s actually kind of awful defensively right now, other than the blocks. His fundamentals need major work. Maybe Fox’s team can coach him up with the big club, but some kind of Westchester stint seems likely.
I’m sure that I’ve posted his post-trade assessment of Bargnani… at least once.
I suspect Robinson is going to be a lot like a young JaVale. Immensely talented but still trying to figure out where he’s supposed to be.
McGee won two chips and probably could have won more if he were happy with vet’s minimum through the end of Durant’s and Curry’s primes, so that’s not a knock on Robinson. He looks raw as hell, but also dunking and blocking shots aren’t things that you learn after you enter the league. They’re athletic skills that are reactive and timing-based. (Not like he needs to learn to run the point like another neophyte we all know and love.) He’s going to maim some guys at the rim this year and that’ll be good enough for me.
Yea, it’s a strange feeling to be in a situation of such optimism to think our front office outfoxed 31 other teams. I think this kid is the goods. Mentally, I have some concern; many of these guys have had troubled upbringing, but he seems to show some signs of something. My first reaction when hearing him talk is I could imagine reading a headline that says ‘ny Knick kills uber driver over fare dispute’. If everything about Fizdale is the real deal (and seems like it is thus far), we should be the perfect environment for this kid to develop both on and off the court.
I still can’t believe that despite the comically inept management, the Knicks at #30 drafted the player with the 3rd-highest WS and VORP from the 2005 Draft. Sure, they traded him at his peak for a bunch of useless junk and he’d go on to win a ring and play for two exceptionally great franchises, but the Knicks still drafted him.
@4 I like Wagner, will the Lakers PA system play Ride of the Valkyries when he enters the game?
But yeah, the hope is that the entire league is lamenting passing on him. I mean, yeah, it’s only summer league, but he put up per-36 stats on both ends that are absolutely mind-boggling. In that article, it was mentioned that he blocked more perimeter shots than the rest of the summer league combined! (not sure if that’s true, but certainly possible.)
I looked up guys who have dunked from half-court off of one dribble, and Giannis was the only guy who came up with a few highlights. Here’s one:

And check out the last few seconds of his Summer League debut vs. the Hawks. It didn’t count, but there it is, the one-dribble dunk from half court at the 2:30 mark:

On day 1, he will be a top-10 athlete in the NBA. Better than Ayton, JJJ, Bagley, Isaac, and all the other young bigs. He might not be as NBA ready skill-wise and may not evolve into as good of a player as those guys, but I would be willing to bet that if they had a pre-season combine any time between now and the start of the regular season, he would outperform all of those guys and possibly by a large margin.
On a more sour note (literally) I was browsing through my Sirius XM channels while in the car today and came upon JD and the Straight Shot on the Coffee House channel. It was a song called “Should Have Known” and now it’s stuck in my head like the Kars for Kids jingle.
Fuck you Dolan!!!
I’m not sure if Robinson belongs in the “G” league or on the NBA team, but wherever he is he belongs ahead of Luke Kornet.
I’m a big blues fan. I have a CD collection that spans the late 1920s straight through the more modern blues acts of today. I saw some of the old time Delta players live before they passed. I never took the time to listen to anything by Dolan.
@7 yeah, sigh, I learned a lot from those Bargs days.
McGee is a compelling comparison. Hopefully that’s Robinson’s floor, but even if he has a similar impact and career, not a bad outcome.
The hope that he will be better hinges on three things:
1) Fast-twitch athleticism (McGee seems quite a bit bigger, but Robinson seems to move quicker/better, both straight line and laterally.)
2) B-ball IQ (McGee seems to have been a reluctant learner. He has Tyson Chandler gifts and only started playing somewhat intelligently recently.
3) Intensity (McGee’s play always seemed to have a laid-back (i.e. lazy) look to it…seemed to rely on his gifts rather than working hard and being a perfectionist. Mitchell seems to want to be in the gym working on his game.)
But McGee? His per-36 and advanced stats in the last two GWS playoff runs were far better than anything Tyson Chandler ever put up. Chandler’s high TS% during the regular season was a league-leading .708 on a 13% usage. In the 2016-17 playoffs, McGee posted a .743 TS% on a 20.8% usage!! And the best he can get is the league minimum???
It’s low-key moves like that that have me wondering about whether the Lakers can make a deep playoff run this year. Between LeBron, Rondo and Ball, McGee is gonna get lots of lobs.
Cant help but think of MRob as Rodman and yesterdays conversation.
Greek freak and Draymond Green have polished skills to complement their freakish athleticism.
It has become a skills league and the value of raw athleticism is clearly be diminished. To play 30 minutes a game and eventually crack the All-Star team you need a polished skill set with the ball in your hands, quick decision making ability; great foot work and lateral movement to defend pick and roll, ability to shoot the long ball at a decent clip and freakish athleticism.
Just being a freakish athlete with no hand eye coordination wont get him more than 12-15 minutes a game.
At the Forum here in LA there are large photos of all the legendary performers that have appeared on the stage— Springsteen, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Clapton, etc… among them, featured in the most prominent spot, is a giant photo of the rhythm guitarist of the Straight Shot. Almost brought a tear to my eye. (I think he may have had MSG buy the Forum just to put his picture up next to Clapton.)
@15 and again, if MitchRob turns out to be Rodman 2.0, we are the luckiest franchise in the league right now. Anyone who thinks that Rodman wouldn’t be as valuable now as he was back then is off their rocker.
Wasn’t Balkman our Rodman2.0?
Rodman was a good passer and moved the ball quickly based on what the defense did but you cant play 4 on 5 every offensive possession. We’ll see on MRob…but wether we love it or hate it – its different world now.
During eye test and emotion days, coaches and all ex-player GMs, seeing someone defend a possession with a block and then jump into the crowd to save a loose ball which leads to a bucket the other way was valued much much higher than someone who hit open 3s at a very high percentage.
Now pendulum has swung the other way. This is the new world of data and analytics. Come to find out that hitting the floor twice a game and flying into crowd every week or so does not statistically increase the probability odds of winning as much as we thought it does back in 80s and 90s.
yeah but that went up in smoke
Rodman would have still been valuable. “Switchable defender” is all the rage this day and age, and you would not be able to get him into many mismatches, he could guard just about anybody. He is also not a zero on offense because he’s one of the most prolific offensive rebounders ever to set foot on a basketball court.
Basketball is still fundamentally a game about
1) possessions
2) scoring efficiency
Rodman got you more possessions with his insane rebounding, and limited the other team’s scoring efficiency with his excellent defense. He would absolutely play. Any argument to the contrary is silly.
It does underscore what a crazy valuable player Draymond is. To provide 80% of what Rodman did on defense and then 140% of what he did on offense is just incredible.
I see Rodman’s name, what about Ben Wallace?
see: @21, @22
Probably a better question is: What about Mark Eaton?
Not trying to be argumentative here but its normal process of human evolution.
The same skill set that made Rodman a HOF player are not transferable to the rookie who enters the NBA in 2018 – so that he can follow the exact footsteps and be a HOF player too. More is required now.
Pick any sport or even any service job now that existed 25 years ago and see how much more knowledge and skill is required now. The employment profile of top accountant 25 years ago would likely translate to a mediocre one now due to productivity and technology increases.
This is why we picked Knox; we should be drafting players whose natural talents and skills are aligned with where the game is going ten years from now.
Aka..position less basketball.
Not really a new idea in team sports. Jack Reynolds laid the roots for TOTAL FOOTBALL over a century ago. Ajax went undefeated in 70s using this style of play and Johan Cruyff implemented a similar version in Barcelona.
This is where both NBA and entire world basketball seem to be going…and in this environment a freakishly athletic hard working player with minimal skills will not be able to play.
Robert Covington had 81% of his 2PT shots assisted and 97% of his 3PT shots assisted. He played >2500 MP on a 52-win team that made a strong playoff run with a rookie point guard on the floor. He had virtually zero shot creation abilities (or was asked to cast them aside) and his team had a good ORtg for the year.
Wait, are you suggesting that Rodman’s perceived value is from his acrobatic, put-it-all-on-the-line play style?
(The irony of your post is that Rodman is, statistically, the most dominant rebounder in league history, and on both ends of the court. He was so dominant that there’s an argument that he’s not just the greatest rebounder ever, but the player with the greatest impact on win probability. And it’s all backed by statistical evidence.
https://skepticalsports.com/the-case-for-dennis-rodman-guide/
Jowles , interesting data and thank you for that information. Not talking about Rodman per se and understand now that he may not be the best example in making my point but I feel like I’m talking to my ex boyfriend right now. You either are missing my point entirely or just arguing to argue. Not really interested in the latter so I’ll move on.
Carmelo Anthony just signed with a team that won 67 wins and was one foreseeable hamstring pull from a Finals sweep. The eyetest is alive and well.
Mark Eaton is a good question. As one of the greatest defensive players ever (#3 all time in blocks, #2 all time in defensive box +/-) you’d have to figure he’d still have value in today’s league.
That said, he wouldn’t even be able to step on the court in the playoffs against the Warriors, rendering him useless in an effort to win a championship.
Since I brought up Rodman….
My point is not that he wouldnt be valuable today, but would anybody give him a chance now. How many forwards who can’t shoot or create their own shot get 30 mins a night in today’s game?
Jordan Bell can’t shoot or create his own shot (except those sky-high putback dunks, but that’s not “shot creation,” amirite guys). John Collins, OG Anunoby and Bam Adebayo (technically a center, but it’s 2018 so let’s just call him a “big) were also among the most productive rookies last year, and I wouldn’t call any of them “shot creators.”
Eaton would get killed by the defensive 3 second rule. He used to stand in the paint and just clog things up with his gigantic frame, not so sure he could get away with that today.
Anunoby took 200 3s last season. Collins averaged 15 pts per 36. Bell played 14 mins a night.
Yup, those are all relevant Rodman playing 30 mins a night in today’s game comparisons.
Draymond Green can’t shoot (by today’s standards) or take anybody off the dribble but he manages to be one of the best players in the NBA. I think Rodman would be just fine in today’s era as a small ball five. If you replace Draymond Green with Dennis Rodman, do the Warriors get better or worse? Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, Kevin Durant, and Dennis Rodman? That team has a chance to win 74.
Daymond Green can handle the ball, pass, block shots and shoot a little. Rodman couldn’t do any of those things.
Just double checking myself, Green has led g state in assists the last 3 years, blocks twice as many shots as Rodman for his career and is 33% from 3 for his career.
Next.
Good point. Maybe Dennis Rodman is more comparable to…Frank Ntilikina, pick and roll defense extraordinaire.
I really think of Rodman working as a 6’7” version of Clint Capela with super human strength. You have a guy who can lock down anybody and rebound everything that doesn’t go in the basket. I don’t know how you don’t find playing time in any era for a guy like that.
I love Rodman. I just don’t see him getting 30 mins a night these days. He would need to add another skill like 3 pt shooting or rim protection.
Rodman was amazing. One of the greatest athletes the NBA has ever seen. I feel pretty comfortable that he would be just as good in the modern NBA as he was back in the day.
To me, it depends on whether rebounding has become less predictive of wins than when Dean Oliver first formulated the Four Factors, not whether Rodman would “fit.” I don’t have an answer for that, but it can’t have declined so much that Rodman’s insane marginal value would be reduced from all-time best to mediocre, or “can’t get on the court.” The game has not changed that much. Net possessions are still important.
I think it’s crazy to imagine Rodman wouldn’t fit today’s NBA, and I think the discussions about players who aren’t the complete package are too directed towards their flaws.
Yes, Rodman couldn’t shoot and wasn’t a great passer or even a presence on offense outside of (the very valuable) offensive rebounds, but he would be one player out of 5 on the court. What he brought in terms of defense and rebounding was so transcendent that there’s no way you can’t compensate for his flaws in other ways to accommodate his great skills, specially if we’re talking about him on a team like Golden State. They would be impossible to score on, the best rebounding team in the league and still have more than enough space to shoot and drive with just Rodman clogging the lanes.
It’s the same thing as the argument that all slow defensive centers simply can’t stay on the court against the Warriors so they’re useless. The Warriors are one of the best teams ever and they won’t last forever, and even against them there might be ways to utilize such players in effective ways. Just because it didn’t happen with the particular opponents GSW has faced doesn’t mean direct correlation to “x can’t play at all against the Warriors”. I just see there arguments as too catastrophic and decisive to be honest.
Andre Roberson plays 27 minutes for a good team. Rodman was an even better defender and also gave you the all time greatest rebounder. It’s not guys like Rodman who have been left out in the cold. It’s no-defense two-point scorers whose marginal efficiency lost value. Guys like Mark Aguirre. The reason we don’t have many Rodman’s isn’t because the game has passed him by, it’s because there haven’t been many in history. The closest modern counterpart was Tony Allen, and he wasn’t even close.
Rodman would do fine in today’s NBA as long as you didn’t put 2 or 3 guys like him on the court at the same time.
Normally you want more balanced players, but when you have a guy that’s great at something, that allows you to put another “specialist” on the court with him that doesn’t have that skill at the typically desired level. The idea would be to give Rodman the role of “rebounding” and count on him to do such a great job, you could put players on the court with him that are perhaps a little weak in that area but that bring something else to the table at a very high level.
As @43 said, Roberson gets a lot of minutes. You can get away with that when you have Westbrook and George on your team. If you don’t have any really good scorers, then his lack of scoring becomes a bigger drag and problem.
@44
You know, but that’s why I don’t think it’s even a big question, because wasn’t it like this when he played too?
Rodman was a part of some pretty fantastic teams (I even looked it up, only twice in his career he was in a team with a losing record, his last season with the Pistons when that core was done, and his very last, 38 year old season with Dallas, both 40-42) that could always compensate for his flaws and use his abilities.
It’s always been like this, it’s not a feature of today’s NBA. This is a guy who played his entire career with hall of famers who excelled at what he couldn’t provide for the team, but he also provided major contributions. Specially the 97-98 Bulls team that didn’t have Pippen for half a season and still won 62 games would not have been nearly as good if it weren’t for him. Yes, you have to surround a guy like him with compensating parts, but he also compensated for a lot of his teammates flaws in his best areas of the game.
You know you are at peak off-season when the board is discussing whether Rodman could play in today’s NBA.
You would think that if teams can cover up for guys like Roberson and Allen on offense, you would be able to make Rodman work in today’s game.
