When you posted that Burke video yesterday, I thought of how many painful Knicks moments I have endured since the Willis Reed days of my childhood. There were the monstrous ones, like Cassell’s 3, Reggie’s 8pts, Charles Smith, the finger roll, the Hibbert block…and the little ones, like Burke, McConnell, Jack, etc.. Even winning when we were praying for losses b/c of TH2, Ndour, Holiday…Damn, we’ve had it rough!
But considering the lack of stars, the albatross Noah contract, the 2-guard conundrum, and the questionable status of KP, I am as optimistic about our 5-year outlook as maybe anytime in that span, which is harder now given how many times that optimism was crushed!
Boy, that list of point guards. There were some I liked, but even though I liked them I knew they weren’t great; and the others were worse. If Phil had actually managed to do the paperwork on time we might have Rubio, but . . . Knicks.
I wonder what the negotiation process looked like, if that is what the Knicks ended up giving up for melo.
I mean, did Denver ask for 3 #1s and part ownership of the Knicks, but the Knicks negotiated it down to just the whole team sans Amare and only 1 #1? And then they all high-fived eachother for stealing melo?

In much better news, I looked at Robinson’s high school tape and he actually has a really nice stroke!
His college situation was incredibly odd, but if it wasn’t we wouldn’t have him. It’s crazy we got such a talented (and big) guy so late in the draft. I was trying to be conservative on his outlook at first, but the prospect of a kp/Robinson frontcourt is pretty damn exciting.
Now hopefully Burke or whoever can get these guys the rock where they need it.

Burke was more of a passing-oriented PG than Kemba last year, but overall Burke’s game is similar: solidly efficient scorer with very low turnover numbers for a PG. Their steal, block and rebounding numbers are also very similar.
Kemba did this in 2700 minutes while Burke did it in only 800 minutes, but if Burke can extrapolate his 2017-2018 over a full season’s worth of minutes he’s very similar to Kemba Walker. Even if he falls off a bit, say his TS% takes a dip to like .530 or something but his AST/TO numbers stay good, then he’s a poor man’s Kemba Walker, which is still a good outcome.
Yes, he looks good. I’m expecting he will be our starting point guard this fall, but stuff could change.
I hope you guys are right but I just don’t think he gets to the rim or the line enough to be Kemba and he’s also worse at defense.
Unfortunately I think JJ Barea is more likely.
At least some of my optimism is related to Fizdale. He seems like a great coach for kids. Not sure how the X’s and O’s will turn out, but he should be an upgrade from Horny, Rambis, Fisher, Woody and D’Antoni (maybe he’s successful now but he would not be well suited a rebuilding situation, as he proved with us.)
I looked up JJBarea’s stats versus Burke’s. It’s a pretty good comparison. See below. Getting someone like that for the price of Burke is a good deal, but is still not really a league average starting point guard. Of course, we all hope for more.

Not to mention Ewing and Starks taking turns in different games shooting like Stevie Wonder against Houston in the finals. If one of those guys just had an awful shooting game instead of catastrophic, the Knicks could have been champions.
He was doing fine with Gallinari, Chandler, and Fields. Then “he whose name shall not be spoken” wreaked havoc on all that was good.
Barea has a fairly average turnover rate though, while Burke has managed to keep his impressively low throughout his career. To me the low turnover rate is really Burke’s “hook,” it’s the thing that makes him kind of unique.
Burke is similar to Barea in that he doesn’t get to the line much though, so… maybe he’s like Barea with a better A/TO ratio? So a “rich man’s” Barea or a “poor man’s” Kemba, somewhere in there.
Very few diminutive PGs in NBA history have put up a 30+% assist rate with under a 10% turnover rate in significant minutes. The names that come up with Burke are Terrell Brandon, Mike Conley and Gus Williams. If you lower the bar somewhat to 12%, names like Chris Paul, Allen Iverson, Nick Van Exel, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and lo and behold, Steph Marbury pop up. Some of the names are higher usage guys that maybe don’t turn the ball over because they either get fouled or simply miss shots. But it is pretty impressive how well he takes care of the ball given how much he passes.
One thing that is clear is that Burke’s low FT rate really stands out. I wonder if he realizes that and can work on it. He looks to be physically up to the task, and did get up to .247 in the G-League. I wonder if Perry and Fiz are aware of this and are making it an area of emphasis for him. I guess when you’re hitting long 2’s at 56% you don’t need to get fouled, but that can’t last.
Yeah Van Exel is another guy who came to mind. Trey is definitely slicker than those guys so you never know I guess.
If you discount the pre-Knicks Burke, I don’t think JJ Barea is a good comparison at all. JJ never posted a WS48 of over .100, has a career TS% of .516 (never above .535 in his prime), never had an OBPM over 1.1 in his 20’s (Burke’s was 4.2). Burke is also a potentially better defender due to his a 6’5″ wingspan. He may not be as crafty or clutch as Barea was ith Dallas in a limited role, but he certainly was a better all-around player last year than Barea ever was, and much more capable of being a starter and playing 30+ minutes a game. IF he plays like he did last year!
Yeah, like I said last night it’s the free throw rate that is likely the key for Burke. It’s very tough to finish inside or draw fouls for a 6 foot guard, but if he can’t shoot at least 3 to 4 free throws a game it’s hard to see him maintaining efficiency on offense, specially as he’ll be playing against starters and will be one of the main offensive options / will be guarded closely. That’s one of the things Kemba does much better than him and helps him be an effective player on offense.
He has the quickness to do it I think, but since he’ll probably always be a minus on defense he really has to keep a good ts% and the same ast to TO rate to be a plus starter.
One of the things that works against guys like Burke drawing fouls is that he’s so adept at getting a good look at the basket by getting his man off balance and then going to step-back moves for jumpers, or using floaters instead of getting all the way to the basket. It’s amazing that he put up a 56% TS without getting fouled much, but yeah, that’s probably not sustainable. Interestingly, he shot an incredible 73% from 0-3 ft. That’s higher than Paul, Curry or Harden ever shot, and on a par with Clint Capela!! Is that sustainable?!
Re: defense, another thing that stands out about him is that he hardly commits any fouls. he only averaged 2.0 fouls per 36, which suggests that he could be more aggressive defensively.
Herre’s another fun fact about Burke’s season. Only 4 guys who played over 700 minutes have posted a TS of 56% or higher on a usage of 24% or higher and a FT rate of under .200.

Melo never posted a .200 WS/48 regular season (Kyrie did that last year) or playoffs (which Kyrie did twice). Kyrie Irving is a legit top 10-12 talent in the NBA and is the greatest ball handler ever, so the Melo-level comp is actually underselling how good he actually is. Kyrie Irving is more like an Amar’e Stoudemire level talent and that’s absolutely worth the max so long as the knees hold up which of course is the caveat in all of this. Adding Kyrie and a high lottery pick to a healthy Porzingis and a young Knicks team is about as bright an outlook the Knicks have had since the Melo trade ruined the decade.
@31, Glassive, with all due respect, Kyrie is a great dribbler, not as great a passer. What about, in no particular order, Magic, AI, Cousy, J-Will, Stockton, Isaiah (the 1st), Steph, and, in my mind, the greatest ballhandler of all time, Pistol Pete?
I won’t go into the whole ball handling thing, but I do agree Irving is a better player in his prime than Melo was. The whole media fawning over Brad Stevens actually undersold what a fantastic season he was having before getting injured.
I don’t think he’ll ever be a fantastic passer but that’s not what he does, he’s a primary scorer who can also create a bit for others. I don’t think he’s the most ideal fit next to Porzingis but if you could guarantee to me he’ll stay healthy for 80% if his games I would not be against it at all.
Kyrie would be the best NYKs guard since the sainted duo of Clyde and Pearl. He’ll provide great scoring and clutch play. Not a great defender, nor a great creator for others, having had LBJ carry that load in CLE. We would need to find playmaking from other sources. Would be a good PnR player with KP and possibly Rob. Won’t cost anything other than money, but I hope the Cap hit isn’t to severe. Imo, overall he’s the quickest pickup to take us to contender status.
In fact, Pearl is a great comp for him: great competitor, bad knees, great dribbler and scorer, not much else. Clyde and the rest compensated for Pearl’s deficiencies, including the lack of playmaking for others, and I believe the NYKs would have a similar set of traits to integrate and cover up for. I still say go for it.
Kyrie looked into the eyes of the beast and slew him with one of the great daggers in NBA history. I like that.

Z. Great clutch shot no doubt. One of the greatest. Kyrie a great offensive player on both ends of the court. Go for him but form the roster to complement his strengths and weaknesses.

Going for Melo destroyed our team because A) he was not a superstar B) we gave up every possible asset to get him.
There’s a chance Irving, who is actually a superstar, is not a superstar for the Knicks simply because of injuries and decline towards the end of the contract when he would be 30, but it would be just like if we had signed only Amare: we would still have all our assets and could get out of the contract much easier or build around him if we still had the players and assets we threw Denver’s way.
I don’t think the Knicks would be contenders just by adding him, but it’s 100% a better move than adding Melo at that price ever was (or adding Melo as a free agent for that matter). I’m still scared about the injuries and I’d obviously rather get a guy like Durant, Giannis or Anthony Davis, but there’s legitimate reason to be excited about a possible move like this, specially if Knox, Robinson and Ntilikina show good signs of development this season and we get a high draft pick.
The fact that Z-man bases his desire to acquire a player on one shot attempt tells you everything you need to know about his basketball evaluation acumen.
