Yesterday, as i was reading about our 41-15 third quarter, i remembered when we used to think we were doing ok that game to then get crushed on the 3rd quarter. It’s good to be on the other side of it. 🙂

What a political screed by Rough just after midnight last night! Rivaled Strat’s from this past weekend. Impressive.

Quentin Grimes has as many 40pt games in his career as that guy in Toronto.

That third quarter was definitely a fun watch, cyber. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if we hadn’t dug that hole for ourselves in the first place.

Grimes has more than Barrett in 44 percent of the minutes and 61 percent of the games.

Woke up this morning after a night which could be described as the “The Return of the Norovirus” and scanned for some good Knicks news.

I discovered that Mikal has taken 20 free throws (and made 19) in the last five games. Apologies if everyone talked about this yesterday and hat tip Tommy Beer.

I have never been that big on interaction effects but this appears to be a whopper. He has been playing well across the board. Some of it may be flaccid opposition but something seems to have clicked without Brunson.

And I don’t know if that’s good or bad

Depends on whether or not they can both figure out a way to have it continue upon Jalen’s return.

I would feel more annoyed about the Grimes thing if I wasn’t positive that, in the event the Bogey trade never happened, Grimes would have been traded to either Brooklyn as part of the Mikal package or to Minnesota as part of the KAT package. Water under the bridge. To paraphrase Norman Dale from Hoosiers, this is our team.

    this is our team

When we were bad i only asked (prayed?) for us to be like in the 90s, a puncher’s chance contender, that would aim at the ECF every year, and go to the Finals once or twice in a decade.
Well, that’s what we are right now, so i can’t complain. I’ll just enjoy the ride. Maybe this time around we can finish the job if we manage to go to the Finals.

I think the only question regarding Grimes is whether it would have saved a draft pick in the Mikal trade.

But that draft pick would have gone to Minnesota anyway. They took what we had, not what was even.

Maybe it would have saved our rights to DaQuan Jeffries or something.

OKC resting some of their stars in an effort to lose to the Sixers and increase their odds of getting their pick is diabolical

Knicks just sent me my playoff invoice with the option to pay by round or pay for the entire playoffs through the Finals.

Hmm, which way to go? I’m sure Jimmy D would wisely invest my money

I sure am glad I was busy yesterday and missed most of that thread. I guess there is an upside to taking care of a 90 year old mother and special needs brother. I might have been tempted to respond and raised my BP.

Brown is shooting 35.3% on wide open 3s. You need to leave him open, or at minimum play very far off him.

Leave Mitch in the paint and let Brown do whatever he wants.

I can see the stats as well as anyone, but I’ve also seen Brown perform at very high levels in clutch playoff situations. I don’t care what his stats are so far this year.

I’m going to stick with, “it’s not going to work”.

    Maybe we are both right.

Maybe that’s our best hope of defending the Celtics, but it won’t work very well.

Apologies if everyone talked about this yesterday and hat tip Tommy Beer.

Tommy Beer does a good job.

Knicks just sent me my playoff invoice with the option to pay by round or pay for the entire playoffs through the Finals.

Hmm, which way to go? I’m sure Jimmy D would wisely invest my money

It’s been awhile since I’ve had season tickets but doesn’t the money for unused tickets just get credited to your account for next year’s season tickets?

I can see the stats as well as anyone, but I’ve also seen Brown perform at very high levels in clutch playoff situations. I don’t care what his stats are so far this year.

I want to reiterate that it’s 35.3% on WIDE OPEN 3s. He’s at 30.9% on all 3pt attempts.

He shot a clutch 32.7% from 3 in the playoffs last year.

I’m not saying you need to stick with it the whole series, but if you’re not trying it then you’re not trying.

d-mar, so long as you don’t lose your metaphorical place in line for the additional rounds, why wouldn’t you wait to pay as you go?

The Grimes situation is genuinely fascinating. I mean this is extremely high level play, the likes of which it’s hard to chalk up to flukiness/luck–he’s not even shooting absurdly well from 3 (.393 is of course very good, but very little would be different if he was shooting his career mark of .378 instead)!

That said, we have seen a few instances of guys doing this during their team’s “silly season” and not being able to replicate it after. Remember Toronto RJ from last year? You don’t hear so much about that guy anymore. Clank is back.

But Grimes does have some scoring chops that RJ never did, and if he maintains even 75% of his current play moving forward Ben R, Rama, and everyone else who rued that trade will have been prescient, and Leon will have a retroactive D- on his report card.

I was being sarcastic about playoff payments, have no idea why anyone would pay for the whole playoffs instead of round by round. And EB yes they do credit you for unplayed games if you go that route, but no interest.

BTW they jack up the prices exponentially each round, so while I’ll be happy if we make the Finals, I’ll need to take out a home equity loan to pay for the tix (-:

Even in Dallas Grimes was up to 16/6/3 per 36 on .600 TS%. That’s a nice set of numbers.

Maybe he could cut down on TOs and add a couple more points, but that’s a pretty nice rotation player if he can keep up his defensive effort.

The only noticeable difference other than an increase in usage is that he’s getting to the rim at a career-high 26.7% in Philly. His previous high was 24.8% in his sophomore season when all he did was shoot corner 3s and drive by closeouts. He’s also shooting 60% from 10-16ft, but it’s a very small portion of his shot diet that I don’t think it matters.

I do think part of it might be defenses not caring when playing a god awful Philly lineup.

Actually it sounds like defenses might actually focus on Grimes if the rest of the lineup is horrible.

Maybe he could cut down on TOs and add a couple more points

That’s the downside of handling the ball so much more. He never had a great handle. I think it’s likely that wherever he winds up next his usage will drop a bit again and he’ll be more of a high caliber role player or 3rd option. But he also may not be done developing.

Morey had a horrible year and has the 76ers in a real mess, but the Grimes trade looks so good on paper now, it might help save him.

Clearly, playing six-out is the solution to our problem once Brunson is back.

I do feel like it is one of those annoying brain teasers. Like, there’s a clear answer to this conundrum. But I don’t have the mental bandwidth to solve it. Luckily that’s not my job. Hope Thibs is up to the task…

https://x.com/KnickFilmSkool/status/1902369711746097371 Katz has entered the chat. When Brunson returns “POA” defense becomes an issue again.

That’s kind of what I’ve been saying.

We know Deuce is having a significant positive impact defensively and we know Mitch is helping defensively also, but it’s hard to project what happens when Brunson is back with Mitch to back him up.

what is the best starting lineup to compete with the Cavs and the Celts? I’d say it’s Mitch, KAT, OG, Bridges and Brunson. We can’t have sieves at the PG and C position and expect to beat elite teams. How long will it take for us to adjust to that lineup?

Another separate point is that there is only one Knick shooting 40% or above from three, and he’s recovering from an injured finger. The only chance we have against the Cs or Cavs is if we somehow get hot from three for a series, but it’s not likely based on what we’ve seen so far this year. So if we’re not going to win with our 3s, we need to win with a better combo of rebounding, turnover battle, and defense at the rim and 3 — another argument for moving Hart to the bench in favor of Mitch.

I think the success of our current defense, even with Towns still playing real minutes at the 5, makes it clear that it’s going to be on the coach to figure out how to get the most out of different lineups when JB returns, because a top 5 O and top 5 D are both possible. Our top 7 players are, in many ways, all equally valuable. So it’s about fitting the pieces together to be tops on both sides of the ball simultaneously. Can Thibs do it? If he can, I actually do think we can compete with anyone.

    It’s a strategic challenge, but it’s possible.

My biggest concern about starting Mitch is a very real one: Thibs will then likely play him more minutes than he can handle, and then he could get re-injured and we wouldn’t have him for the playoffs, anyway. Mitch can handle 24-25 minutes a night, *not* 30-32 minutes a night (and certainly not more than that).

And we rented the wrong Bogdanovic, too. Had we rented the correct one, he might still be on our team.

Morey had a horrible year and has the 76ers in a real mess, but the Grimes trade looks so good on paper now, it might help save him.

I’m wondering what Philly’s tolerance is for keeping Grimes if a team offers a big contract.

They just drafted Jared McCain who also looked excellent earlier this year in a small sample. McCain is 6’2″ and Grimes is 6’4″ so I’m not sure if they’ll be able to play the wing spots together.

If they can hang onto their pick this year, they should really start the rebuild in earnest… maybe give it one more shot with the young guys in tow.

Mitch can handle 24-25 minutes a night, *not* 30-32 minutes a night (and certainly not more than that).

Hey, Doc Brown, you can’t make treatment plans for people that aren’t your patients. But if you build a flux capacitor maybe that extra 5 minutes of work a day can be retroactively erased.

Do *you* want Mitch playing 30 minutes or more per game? If so, more power to both of you.

Oh, wait. I forgot what team you root for. You probably do. 🙂

Speaking of such, I noticed Mitch as being listed as ‘questionable’ for tonight somewhere while idly grazing sports news. No idea why, and honestly outside of wanting to see the 4-5 experiment get as much time as possible (but I guess not 30+ minutes…!), I’d be fine with giving him a day off. If that’s all it is.

Mitch isn’t playing back-to-backs… but we’ll see what Thibs has to say about that.

Mitch has never played 30mpg. His career high is 27.5 which he managed for all of 30 games.

He did play 27.1 mpg 2 years ago in the playoffs. He hit 30min 4 times in 11 games with a high of 36. We may get something like that again if we’re struggling when he sits.

Serious question: Is it a “back-to-back” if they didn’t play last night? I thought that was the definition. That’s different than just “playing every other game,” which is also not what is occurring.

Yeah, I get it. Forgot they were playing again tomorrow. Thanks, DRed.

Biyombo and then Mark Williams. Probably need him more against Mark Williams, sadly.

Brunson (ankle) is expected to be out through late March to early April, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

I’m wondering what Philly’s tolerance is for keeping Grimes if a team offers a big contract.

I read a few “X” notes that suggested they are talking about matching whatever he’s offered unless it’s insane, but I am not familiar with who has good sources there.

Brunson (ankle) is expected to be out through late March to early April, Shams Charania of ESPN reports.

There’s only 8 games in April, and only 4 games after April 6. I hope it’s late March and if he’ll be available by March 28 at Milwaukee, we’ll have 10 games to get the feel of the team at full strength before the playoffs.

The lessons to be learned from the Grimes case are.

    1. If a player is young and already a very good defender (especially if he’s a versatile defender position wise), you should give him some time to develop complimentary offensive skills as long as he’s at least shooting 3s at a tolerable rate or showing some signs of playmaking, rebounding etc..

    2. If a player has been a good 3 point shooter for a couple of seasons or more, don’t panic if he hits a rough patch. 3 pointers are volatile even over a year, let alone a shorter period of time.

    3. Injuries (especially repeated minor injuries year after year), will delay the development of a young player. So if he’s going to break out, it may come at a later age than we typically see.

    4. Don’t trade long term value (Grimes) for short term value (Bogs) unless you are convinced that’s the trade that puts you over the top.

I hated the Grimes trade when it happened and hate it even more now.

It’s impossible to know how it would have all played out if we didn’t do it, but I’m pretty sure we’d be in a better asset position. That was a trade where we threw away well more than 5 cents on the dollar like on some of the overdiscussed pick trades and it was obvious at the time. All we are learning by this potential breakout is that it might be even worse than I thought if he sustains a significantly higher level than before.

I heard that Brunson is doing some shooting. So even if it takes 2 more weeks or a tad longer, at least he’s working on shots and may come back fairly sharp even if a little short on conditioning. The biggest issue to me is that it would be nice to have more games with Mitch and Brunson and with Mitch, Towns and Brunson to get them working well together.

Grimes’s quality play is just more evidence that they should have just stuck with the 2023 proven playoff roster with the best playoff defense in the association, then added KAT. That, plus the draft picks they’d still have, would be a much better state of affairs.

Knicks are down to 33-1 to win the championship, barely even the “puncher’s chance.” Hubert can decide how close to literal zero he needs for “mezzanine” status but he’s looking more and more right about things. The nine-ish or so to one that obtained when he said it was more like “zero” is looking prescient indeed.

There’s only 8 games in April, and only 4 games after April 6. I hope it’s late March and if he’ll be available by March 28 at Milwaukee, we’ll have 10 games to get the feel of the team at full strength before the playoffs.

If we’ve learned anything, it’s that players should take the time they need. I don’t want him back on a weak ankle because we’re trying to reintegrate him, and then he gets hurt again like Julius. That was a very bad sprain, and anything less than a month is foolish. Six weeks probably would be ok. Which means the start of the playoffs.

Not ideal, but better than rushing him and losing him the rest of the way.
