RAPTORS REPORT CARD: Who made the grade after being kicked by the Knicks?
68 replies on “Knicks Morning News (2023.12.13)”
Unintentional? Hahaha!
Draymond should be out of the league and take the entire 2024 to get counseling.
The Rap-Hawks game tonight is interesting in a rubbernecking kind of way. Both are woefully underachieving; the Raptors are in a position to possibly blow it up if they don’t start winning, while the Hawks are sort of all-in on a team with what looks to be a hard ceiling with several guys locked up long term. Both teams are on 4-game benders. Quin Snyder doesn’t seem to be helping, and neither does the new guy in Toronto. (Should I even bring up that ATL is 1-6 since Jalen Johnson went down?)
I looked at a raptors blog after their Knicks game. The fans there seem to be blaming their record on the coach.
The fans there seem to be blaming their record on the coach.
Hard to disagree. And it doesn’t exactly help the Knicks’ lawsuit.
I think the best thing to do moving forward, is everyone who follows the NBA, on every platform and in every walk of life- stop mentioning 23 on the Warriors by name.
Period.
People keep making him relevant. Great player, but with thes excessive and egregious bitch moves he’s become fond of, he needs to not be spoken of. AND, Silver needs to sit him down for no less than a month- preferably the rest of this season to be honest.
That Raptors blog sounds similar to this blog lol
The league does not need Draymond Green anymore. The league should toss him before he hurts someone badly enough to ruin heir career. He needs help.
I’m not sure about the whole season, but he don’t seem to be getting “it”, at all…
maybe the rest of the season is fair, it doesn’t seem safe for other players to have him out there right now…
This kind of shit cannot be allowed to become normal, and he’s already done it 3 times in recent memory (Poole, Gobert, Nurkic). Enough.
I hadn’t noticed the complete stinker of a season Andrew Wiggins is having. He has got to be the worst rotation player in the entire NBA this year. He’s single-handedly destroying that team.
With the #23 guy now facing a lengthy suspension the Dubs seem cooked.
Dray will get a slap on the wrist. Nurkic should pull a Dolan and file a lawsuit.
i think he’ll get at least 10 more games. i’d give 50.
still gathering the courage to step out of the bed (it’s kind of cold 🥶 )…so laying in bed watching espn stuff…
saw on the news “ticker” that the Oklahoma City Thunder are gonna build a 900 million dollar new arena – that’s so cool…I mean, everyone in OKC will be kicking in 1% sales tax for six years, but that’s awesome that a small market city like that treasures their sports team so much…
reminds me of some years back when Sacramento invested in their team…
He Who Must Not Be Named 😀
I moved to the bay area in 2009…have seen plenty or warriors games since then and watched this guy his whole career…i think if he were some scrub…he’d be out of the league by now for his act…but both the franchise and the league have minimized his bullshit….now at the end of his career and the fact that the team is fading in relevance..he seems to be acting out even more and very recklessly ….hopefully he gets 20 games or something but he won’t…the players association is in a tough spot…arguing for a douchebag but at the same time…the other union members are the ones that are in danger ….they have to protect them as well….
anyway…curry is doing the same thing as lebron is this year…it’s just that the supporting cast is ageing…wiggins looks disinterested and klay looks like he’s an old man…they need to play moody and kuminga more…which I think is where Kerr is headed…
I am generally not a punitive person but Draymond seems to have learned absolutely nothing from his previous runs ins with the league’s disciplinary policies. These last two incidents came with the risk of serious injury. Thankfully that was avoided both times, but sure seems like another slap on the wrist isn’t going to turn any lights on.
Really great Macri newsletter today about what’s fueling Randle’s resurgence of late. The sample size is decidedly too small to take any victory laps, but he seems to have traded some pull-up 3s that he hits at 1.0 PPS or less for some short-midrange shots he hits at ~1.15 PPS. He’s also finishing much, much better than he was to begin the season even with his attempts at the rim up a tick.
There may well be regression and frustration and the like, and we’re a long way away from being able to say definitively that he can be a key cog on a contender, but the man is damn fun to watch when he’s dialed in. I’m happy we have him.
In today’s NBA, it’s hard to start three guys who cannot shoot 3s well. RJ has miraculously picked up his 3pt shooting so far this year (.382), while Randle’s has cratered (.308). And of course there’s Mitch. But ultimately, both Randle and RJ will probably land in the below-average range.
Similarly, we start three guys who play below-average defense. As such, I just don’t think this lineup is sustainable.
We kind of have to work around Brunson (good shooter, bad defender) and Mitch (good defender, non-shooter), so that leaves the other three positions. I guess Thibs likes having 3 creators on the floor, but 2 creators and 2 3/D guys is more the norm (unless you’re the Celtics). Top teams like Minny and OKC only have 2 legit creators starting for them, for instance.
In summary, as frustrating as Randle can be at times, replacing RJ with a more well-rounded player seems like the move for this team.
The mismanagement of IQ is a big problem with this year’s team. He’s the best two-way guard we have and he has seen his minutes decline by 16% this year.
Inexplicable and inexcusable. Hard to rationalize in any way.
Nobody wants to watch kind, decent, well-behaved scrubs play basketball. The league is right to cultivate greatness. They have rules for safety and fairness, and those rules should be enforced. But it’s not the league’s job to “teach” grown men how to behave, or to get them to conform to their own social mores. Draymond Green (I said it) is not a menace to society. His transgressions are on a theatrical stage, and they should be addressed in that context. There are worse people than him on the court everyday, we just haven’t learned about them yet.
Seems like only a matter of time before Draymond ends somebody’s career or disfigures somebody permanently. He’s a sucker punch artist, and those are the ones that really hurt you: the ones you don’t see coming.
I can see Steph Curry defying age like LeBron and being great til he’s 39. But the Warriors are cooked. I wonder if he’ll have a second act on a different team.
not so far perhaps…
julius just needs to adhere strictly to his role: DO EVRYTHING…something needs to be figured out though in regards to his energy level during the game…it really affects both turnovers and defense…
he’s not managing it well – it just he’s crazy driven, but – his body ain’t there, especially on defense…
unless he’s guarding bobby portis – nothing can stop him from demonstrating his disdain for booby poortis…he would cover him like the glove…
its the leagues job to make sure nobody ends up like kermit washington and rudy t…so not sure what your point is but if you were out there and that moron slugged you in the head and broke your jaw…i’m pretty sure you’d want him off the court the next time you played him (if in fact you don’t end up like rudy t and never playing again)….
I mean, if I walk up to someone and whack them in the head or knee them in the balls I could face legal repercussions. If I did it at work, I’d be fired.
So do we want to let celebrities get away with shit just because they’re celebrities, or should we hold them to the same standards we hold everyone else in society?
If my team is a playoff lock, I’d straight up refuse to play Green in worries he’ll intentionally injured one of my guys. Not even bench my starters, I’d just forfeit the game to protect my players. I can’t imagine anyone wants to play against him.
yeah, he’s not getting it…you have to restrict him for player safety reasons…
most likely it’ll be about 20 games…they have 59 games left in the season…it should be 30 at least…
the warriors have only themselves to blame…sucker punching another employee on camera wasn’t enough to get him fired last year…
karma is a mirror golden state warriors…they were right to get rid of poole, should have sold high on wiggins…they’ve enabled and empowered that guy who shows zero awareness towards the situation…
i’m surprised poole, sabonis, gobert, nurkic all showed as much restraint as they did…he attacked them…i can only imagine jokic’s reaction to something like that, or some other guys that it will be hard to restrain them from not injuring draymond severely…
and all of it will be live streamed…
klay has been fully processed and now is done…next step is to get fired up, then find a comfortable spot on the shelf…
i like that player number 2’s hair…reminded me of ron baker’ bouncing hairdo…i am so jealous 🙂
Forget about for a second what the league’s job should be to protect players safety or fairness or try to teach behaviour. The Kermit punch, the Kareem-Benson play, the malice in the palace all were black marks with real impact to the game’s popularity. Silver’s first priority is to make sure those situations cannot happen again and if he has to teach a player to conform to basic social norms by banning him that is what absolutely should happen.
“i like that player number number’s hair…reminded me of ron baker’ bouncing hairdo…i am so jealous 🙂”
Huh? Who? I mean, I know who Ron Baker is, but “player number number’s hair” is missing me a li’l bit.
my bad doogie: Brandin Podziemski from golden state…he has dreamy curly hair 😛
whatcha doin today doogie?
i think geo is referencing Podziemski…the kid from Santa Clara…he’s a scrapper….would be a Thibs kind of guy..
EB, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that your job doesn’t entail tangling with and wrestling for position with seven foot Serbian gentlemen, so that’s an apple to the orange.
Also, we aren’t talking about random acts of street crime. Green is allowed to use his body to physically create space, he just can’t do it certain ways, which creates a fine line between what is acceptable and what is dangerous.
I like how Knick fans, who reminisce fondly of Starks, Oakley, Mason, Sprewell, and X-Man can’t tolerate any of Draymond’s histrionics.
Has Draymond not run afoul of any reasonable safety based rules? We’re at 3 incidents now that came with obvious risk of serious injury for the unsuspecting other guy (Poole, Gobert, and Nurkic). If you do this stuff out on the street you get arrested, charged with a crime, and quite possibly incarcerated.
That’s not what I want to see happen to Draymond Green, but at this point there’s clearly a legitimate safety concern with him. Seems like just tacking more games onto the suspensions isn’t working, so this might have to be a Morant situation wherein his return to play is contingent on demonstrating he’s actually trying to make some changes.
My opinion here has nothing to do with retribution and everything to do with the fact that playing basketball against (or in Poole’s case, alongside) Draymond Green has become a literal hazard.
donnie, did you miss the whole summer of simone – where she laid it out pretty clear: were not just entertainers, we’re human beings
as an employer – you should be obligated to reasonably protect your employees…
this is way beyond acceptable workplace behavior – any workplace…any workplace…
i’ve heard that what happened with the draymond/jordan thing isn’t that rare – however, it was on freaking camera…what more should it have taken…
just recently he puts another player in a “choke hold”, for an extended period of time…now he’s just swinging wildly and strikes someone in the temple (a la ronnie artest), uncontrollably he claims: “bad luck”…
indefinite suspension, get the owners’ input, board of governors or whatever…
doogie – did i put the comma in the right spot there on the word: owners?
edit: donnie – it is no longer 1990 whatever…don’t let yourself get left decades behind 🙂
“whatcha doin today doogie?”
Working, just like every other day. Not for the government, though, as some on here would have you believe. LOL
Looking forward to sharing the last night of Hanukkah with my new hottie. I’m a Jewish boy who by virtue of the fact that I grew up in a very non-Jewish area (and now live in a very non-Jewish area) has never really dated a Jewish girl before, so this is a revelation for me in many new and pleasant ways. Also just made a fourth restaurant reservation for us for New Years Eve—she promised me that I would love what she is going to wear for me. I need to pick the best of those four venues for our first (hopefully of many) New Years celebrations together.
Also, we aren’t talking about random acts of street crime. Green is allowed to use his body to physically create space, he just can’t do it certain ways, which creates a fine line between what is acceptable and what is dangerous.
Given my strength if I punch or chokehold someone in a fit of anger there is probably very little danger of serious injury (at least to the other person, not sure about me). But if I were a 6 ft 6 230lb athlete “very little” would turn into “very likely”. Way, way across that very fine line.
Still can’t believe the Mavs picked Dante Exum up off the scrap heap, and now he’s starting for them and doing things like hitting for 26 points (including 7-of-9 3s, and the game-winner) for them. Seems like so many other teams “get lucky” with stuff like that, but we don’t take those chances. We fill our last three or four bench spots with guys who virtually have no chance of ever getting a real opportunity with us, instead of taking flyers on guys who might. It’s a little bit frustrating.
I’m pretty sure Draymond isn’t as dumb as to try this act on Jokic. And it’d be even dumber if Jokic’s brothers were in the stands. LOL
Would you do a Steph for Brunson plus multiple first round picks (let’s say 2 to 3).
Curious if people would take the much shortened window to get a true blue superstar.
I’m not sure I would or wouldn’t do it but would love to hear people’s thoughts.
dang, i’m smiling ear to ear…you made my day – thank you doogie…
i like a lot of how aware your are of the situation…put some years behind you and it is a bit easier to see romantic stuff a bit more clearly…
i’m still waiting on a friend…i don’t know, now that i’ve gotten away from work, settled things in with the family, cleaned up the house, next year i may want to be a bit more social…we’ll see…
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“dang, i’m smiling ear to ear…you made my day – thank you doogie…”
Not sure how I did that, but glad that I did.
Doogie, best of luck to achieve this, but… have you warned her that either she is master in grammar or she’ll have to get used to being corrected? 😉 😀
Every NBA player has to tangle with a 7ft pro athlete and I’ve rarely if ever seen someone wind up to smack someone across the head that way. In what way does that reasonably create space?
I’m fine with giving hard fouls that are basketball plays stopping someone from scoring. This wasn’t one of those. If this was a normal, acceptable part of the sport we wouldn’t be talking about it and Dray wouldn’t have received a flagrant 2.
We can certainly beore lenient with sports that involve physical contact where people get heated, but there’s a line that Dray consistently crosses and that others don’t.
If this was the 90s, you could argue that players know what they’re signing up for and that it’s part of the unwritten rules of the game, like fights in hockey, but those days are gone and it’s not acceptable to foul players like they did in the 90s. The flagrant rules reflect that, even if they’re overly protective at times.
“have you warned her that either she is master in grammar or she’ll have to get used to being corrected? 😉 😀”
LOL Well, she knows what I do for a living. 🙂 She’s very articulate, and although she doesn’t write for a living I’ve read a couple of her essays, and they are very well-written. I cannot really think of a time where a correction was in order…….but I probably wouldn’t do it, anyway. It would hurt me to do it more than it would hurt her to hear it.
would i do the deal swifty, that is a mighty: Yes
oh, those crazy folks are just having way to much fun up there…one of my favorite hall of fame performances…
Good point… strangely enough, this was something we seemed to be kinda good at about 10 years ago. Remember:
Shawne “Extra E” Williams?
Pablo “Prigi Smalls” Prigioni?
Chris “Dopeland” Copeland?
Ok, I made up the nickname for the last guy but the point holds. Like certain other frustrating management tendencies, our lack of end-of-bench creativity seems to coincide with the Thibs era.
Of course Markanen is making his return tonight.
Champions League looms, so my quick two cents…
Re: Green
30 games suspension and make it clear it’s the last time, next one should be a 2 years ban.
Re: Curry for JB swap
Yes. No more than 2 first (or 3 protected).
Re: Exum
Watched him play the last two years in EL (Barcellona and Partizan), he did very well but I would’ve never thought he’d be able to come back to the League and have “this” impact.
New rule: You can use Clyde’s “T” in Markatin, but if you don’t, you’ve gotta have both “K”s. Fair? 🙂
It’s hard to see this happening unless Steph wanted out. This would be like the Lakers trading old Kobe — no active player has done as much for one franchise as Steph has for GS.
On the merits, Steph is amazing but he’d be replacing our best player, so it might not be quite the boost we’d be hoping for from a consolidation trade where we’d like to pair a superstar with Brunson. Don’t think he’s a defensive upgrade, but he’s obviously a better shooter and playmaker.
However, I wouldn’t want LeBron’s unprecedented longevity to cloud our thinking. It’s more or less unprecedented for any PG to still be great after age 36. With our luck, Steph turns into Elfrid Payton by 2025.
Svi Mykhaulik ended up starting for the Hornets down the stretch last year. He had a game with 26pts/5ast/4rebs/2stls on .745 TS%.
Our deep bench guys have zero chance of breaking out because we’re deep enough to not worry about it, not because they’re untalented.
Without getting extended looks at Windler or Jeffries, we don’t actually know how useful they might be.
And Dante was shooting 29% from 3 before last night, so let’s not get too carried away with his success story just yet.
“And Dante was shooting 29% from 3 before last night, so let’s not get too carried away with his success story just yet.”
I know. Just saying that his last three games are hard to ignore: 22/5/5 in 35 minutes per game, 23/36 (.639) on 2s and 10/15 (.667) on 3s.
The biggest problem with Draymond is that he doesn’t think he’s doing anything wrong. This is a guy who got suspended for Game 6 of a Finals and probably cost his team a championship. But he doesn’t see any problem with how he acts.
The Warriors seem to be enabling him. Steph, Klay, and Kerr need to get in his face and tell him they’ve had enough.
He’s baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
I think that what I am arguing is consistent with that. The league culture is to tell players to do X, Y, and Z and they will be rewarded. To “play with toughness”, and “play with fire”, and “be aggressive”. Players who do that are “great” and become “champions”. Green has accomplished that, despite being a 6’7” center.
So the issue I have is with singling out an individual and calling for punitive action when that person does those those things, but not in the style or manner that is pleasing to the bossman.
I believe Draymond should receive a flagrant 2 and get the standard suspension. I take no issue with that. What bothers me is reading things like:
“Draymond should be out of the league and take the entire 2024 to get counseling”.
“The league does not need Draymond Green anymore. The league should toss him”
“I’d give him 50.”
And
“the best thing to do moving forward, is everyone who follows the NBA, on every platform and in every walk of life- stop mentioning 23 on the Warriors by name,” as if his on-court aggression puts him on the same level as Voldemort.
I wonder if Macri is somehow happier about this than Thibs.
Perfectly reasonable signing, given our lopsided roster construction, Mitch’s absence, etc., and given Taj’s willingness to play as many or as few minutes as he’s given.
Lol shit, creative thinking from the top brass…
Welcome home, Methuselah Gibson!
Lol, so much for Dylan Windler’s Exum-esque breakout.
Time is a flat circle.
What’s truly insane is that Taj’s rookie year was LeBron’s 7th season
https://twitter.com/TheStrickland/status/1734986648788627912?s=19
damn donnie. this is like finding out jowles switched to pickleball. please see my journal study: sucker punches, nut shots, throat kicks, torso stomps and rear naked chokes: a dialectical deconstruction of hypocrisy outrage as a contributing factor to degenerative line density misspecification in otherwise healthy endurance athletes
The Knicks being a team lacking wings taller than 6’6″ and not having much in the way of shooting, I would have much preferred Jeffries be jettisoned to bring Taj home. I’m really not sure what Thibs sees in Jeffries to want him over Windler
Doogie, late to the game due to endless calls, but I will reiterate Geo’s perspective — it’s just nice to hear from someone who is in a good place (and who recognizes and enjoys it). Thanks for that.
And I appreciate your denial, but will continue the fantasy of you working for a federal agency only because of course you are legally required to deny that you have ready access to sensitive national security documents.
But thank you for your service.
It kinda does though- when he does nonsensical things like he did last night. Rodman was a handful..but he do anything nearly as cowardly as 23 did in his last 2 incidents alone. Not to mention that they were unnecessarily excessive. He had a good reason in protecting Klay for grabbing Gobert..but did he HAVE to hold him in a chokehold for that long? Did he have a reason to do a spinning attack on Nurkic? That was not accidental. This man is a pro athlete- should anyone believe he wasn’t aware that if he did what he did, that he would hit someone? The man opened his hand at the end of it so he wouldn’t punch him. He’s the hard head that has to learn the hard lesson now because he’s mostly gotten away with bullshit that he shouldn’t have. “Gotten away” in the sense that he didn’t get punished thoroughly enough for him to learn his lesson. Might as well cut his nose off and give him The Elder Wand- he is the villain, and in such an unnecessary fashion
Knicks are 9th in 3pts made and 5th in 3pt %, the Knicks are a pretty good shooting team.
True BBA..but with shooting at a premium in this league, I’d rather not waive a wing who can shoot at taller than 6’6 for a 39 year old center not necessarily known as a shooter.
can’t wait for Taj to get waived by mutual agreement, so we can sign him again.
as an Australian, I’ve seen plenty of Dante love over the years by our media (i.e. any Aussie player that makes the NBA is immediately adopted by the populace and media deem him the greatest) but he has always been fools gold. Hopefully this time around works out for him
“Doogie, late to the game due to endless calls, but I will reiterate Geo’s perspective — it’s just nice to hear from someone who is in a good place (and who recognizes and enjoys it). Thanks for that.”
Thanks so much, Raven.
