2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Bulls

Sorry, the site was being weird.

Anyhow, Jalen Brynskn is the man and will start tonight, as the Knicks take on the struggling Bulls in Chicago.

Let’s go, Knicks!

Grimes was absolutely reading that entire thread

And Alex Caruso can’t believe he wasn’t mentioned

What was that? Two Knicks fighting for the same rebound and then let the ball go out of bounds.

Randle was engaging in some fairly shameless stat-stuffing that went terribly wrong.

His messaging about how he should stop arguing with the refs I agree with. Like Clyde said, “let’s see.”

Is it me or the players seem to be back at standing around on O, without much movement, like before the winning streak?

Wow, I’m on an ESPN tape delay, no Hart yet. I’ll keep my comments to myself since they’ll be minutes late…

damn what happened? we were cruising and I had to do some shit around the apartment and now we’re not

If Deuce can be average on O, with how good he is on D that’s a great player to have.

not our game but Bol Bol went coast to coast, lost one defender with a spin just across halfcourt and then drove through 3 hawks to dunk. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone that tall make a play like that.

The recent emphasis on traveling is messing with a lot of players…Deuce just got one too…

That was a clear foul wtf

Exactly. Don’t know what’s going on with the refs, but they’re well below what we’re used to.

Kobe would have averaged five travels a night in this new regime. (God I am petty)

Dred- I am with you. You watch Bol and you’re like, maybe he should be playing small forward actually? Which is strange.

MITCH

Derozan seems to have been impervious to the rules changes to lessen fts. Talk about a smart player. Any guy who can get fouled that much has to have a mental
edge.

Williams does look good on defense.

Knicks looking good in the Purgatory Bowl!

Jalen Brunson is a real nice player. And he hustles, too!!!

Nice half. Our defense looks a little worse than in the previous games, but maybe it’s still good enough to win this.

Got to get up early, see you tomorrow. And keep posting here for me to get the feeling of the game when i read it tomorrow.

Score and box look pretty good. Outlier is IQ 1/5. What’s wrong with this guy?

I only have access to the ESPN feed and it feels like I’m watching the Bulls broadcast.

What is the deal with us and the 3rd quarter? I guess it might not even be a thing. But it definitely feels like it’s a thing.

I don’t get this challenge…it was a weak call but not gonna be overturned. Maybe he just wants to get the starters more rest…

The form on Quickley’s shot is terrible. I don’t see how he is ever going to be a consistent shooter with that fugly looking heave of a shot.

“I only have access to the ESPN feed and it feels like I’m watching the Bulls broadcast.”

Doris Burke is driving me crazy.

All the improvements the defense had shown the past 4 games has gone straight out the window tonight.

“ Had to mute ESPN.”

After a great offensive rebound by Mitch, all Doris Burke talked about was how the Bulls can’t let that happen

Caruso tricks every PF in the league to try and iso him on the switch when he’s one of the best one on one defenders in the league, Randle is no exception tonight

NBA has the worst officiating of all the major professional sports and that’s saying something.

If Randle passes to Grimes there, we win.

Man, sometimes I wish Clyde’s commentary could just be put on a speaker for the Knicks at the end of games instead of whatever Thibs is telling them.

A truly terrible offensive play call by Thibs or Randle, whoever

At least Randle played great defense on Williams there to somewhat redeem himself

I mean, no screens, everyone standing around, Randle holding the ball for 20 seconds, that was just atrocious

Good thing Randle is really fresh in 4th quarters thanks to Thibs managing his minutes so well.

Caruso is the perfect example of the little, white, hustle guy syndrome E was talking about earlier…

He’s been limping since before his big 3. Hope it’s not his kneecap again

Grimes was absolutely reading that entire thread

😉

If we needed any further indication, Brunson should take every end of game shot

Guys, Randle did some dumb shit, but please acknowledge that without him we’re not even sniffing a win

The hate is over the top sometimes

Doesn’t make up for the playoff losses in 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993 or 1996 but I’ll take any win we can get in Chicago.

Oof. Couple Grimes threes at major moments. Good win. 29 more to go.

Haha. Love Grimes doing an interview in the background of Brunson’s interview with Rebecca.

This being work time here, I could only watch bits of the game. But I have to say that, unlike the last three wins, this one did not make me feel like the Knicks are a legit good team, (although they seemed to defend well in OT)

Chicago’s a very good offensive team, they just can’t defend, even with The Great Caruso.

I’m with d-mar, Randle is the main reason we were in this game in the first place. He made some bad plays but also defended, rebounded, and assisted on two of Grimes’ big 3’s.

sure…we don’t win with Randle but his crunch time performance is not pretty and Thibs’ running things through him is head scatching…

They actually missed RJ down the stretch. Going at their two best defenders over and over again isn’t ideal. RJ has been very good playing off if Randle and Brunson lately- not hunting shots just taking what the defense is giving him.

Kinda sucks we have to play these guys again Friday. Really hard to beat any team twice in a row

I’m also with d-mar, but can understand why some people are having trouble viewing the situation rationally because the last possession of regulation was the single worst offensive possession I’ve ever seen as a fan of the god damn New York Knicks.

But yeah, Randle was mostly great tonight and has been great this season.

I don’t think you can really take anything good or bad out of this one. Just a weird game. That said, if you’re going to have a weird game, better to get a W out of it than an L!

Another thing: I could watch the first quarter and I noticed something I’ve seen before. It seems that with Obi out Thibs now subs for Barrett much earlier in the first quarter, but then brings him back to play when Hartenstein and Sims are on the floor together. My surmise is that Thibs thinks the second unit needs more shot creation when Sims and Hartenstein are in together, so he wants both Quickley and Barrett on the floor with them.

Well, sorry, one thing you can take out of this is that Jalen Brunson is a fucking tough little dude.

Amen Brian he constantly hits the deck and he’s really the only Knick who draws charges

(And fingers crossed I think good RJ might be a thing )

Jalen is unbelievable. The moves he uses to create space and the touch he has to finish with that space is just uncanny.

The goal of the last possession with 24.7 seconds left is to get a shot off with no time for the opponent to get the ball back if you miss. Randle got a shot off, not a good one but at least the game went into OT. LeBron has had many such last possessions.

The worse possession to me was the one before it when Randle got blocked by like 3 guys at the rim, leading to the DeRozan run-out lay-up.

never any doubt…

ha…still though, good win…julius and thibs need to answer for that last possession in regulation…

that’s interesting, we play the bulls in chicago again on friday…

I guess that’s good for practice, rest and medical treatments…

Finally my lag-time game is over. Nice win, if fugly at times.

Why was Barrett not out there through the last while? I’m super happy with subbing IQ for him, but was there an obvious reason to take out our favorite punching bag?

Ah, looked at the box. Fouled out, that makes sense. He should do that more often…

I have never seen LeBron dribble to the baseline and throw up an air ball on a contested shot from behind the backboard but I suppose it’s possible.

“Kinda sucks we have to play these guys again Friday. Really hard to beat any team twice in a row”

It’s a little easier when you already won the first one. 😉

“I don’t think you can really take anything good or bad out of this one. Just a weird game.”

Why? We beat a desperate team that has a superstar offensive player and 2 star offensive players, plus some decent role players, on the road. Lots of guys contributed to the win, and we don’t win without every single one of those contributions. I think it was more important and telling than any of the other 4 wins in this streak.

Is that the only kind of bad shot one can take at the buzzer?

I think until we beat the Celtics by 20 in Boston no one will be satisfied with wins

I thought it was a very telling game. We beat a team that’s conceptually equivalent to us, despite some brain farts by the usual players. Normally we lose that game because brain farts. This time we won despite them.

I really didn’t like the overtime offense that was literally just Brunson and Randle, the other three players were literally sidelined. But hey, we won, so what do I know.

“I think until we beat the Celtics by 20 in Boston no one will be satisfied with wins”

Bing Bong

I am very satisfied. This streak is the most fun I’ve had watching the Knicks since Bing Bong.

I fell asleep at halftime and woke up at overtime. I checked Twitter and the reactions to the end of game play were priceless. Just hilarious.

Good win!

Randle is hero balling and people are not crazy to think that isn’t too sustainable. Biut definitely will take it, especially with a nice game and a +14 from Grimes.

Somebody do the meme for me.

It’s all about the takes?

It always has been

I’ve been the most impressed by the defense during the streak, and today, they gave up 117 in regulation, while blowing a four-point lead with 50 seconds to go. But they then kicked their ass in overtime, so that was good. And Brunson played great after suffering a major injury in his last game. It was a weird game. But, again, it is better to win these sorts of games than lose them.

I think it was a great, gutsy win, despite the worse defense. It’s hard to win on the road against a Bulls team that is definitely competitive despite being headed for the play-in. You can’t win every game by 15 while posting a record breaking DRTG. And everyone played well, which is good to see.

Right now, we look firmly in the second tier of the East with BK and Toronto and a healthy Atlanta.

Despite the win, I think it’s fair to wonder if the ultra-tight 9-man rotation was harmful tonight.

I guess you have to suppose that it’s just Thibs being stubborn since there’s no hard evidence to the contrary, but how much is due to not wanting the benched guys to get hurt before tomorrow when some trade restrictions drop…

hadn’t noticed until tonight all the wraps grimes uses on his leg while on the bench…

long game, but he did look a little like he was favoring that leg…probably me though just worried about him missing any time…

Although, as Al notes, it always feels extra special to beat the Bulls or the Celtics.

I don’t get the Bulls hate vibe anymore, it was so long ago and they’ve mostly sucked since. The Celts on the other hand…I was really freaking bummed that I stayed up only to see them beat the Lakers in OT last night. That hate will never stop giving….

It’s just a generational thing, I assume. The Bulls matter more to fans of mine and Al’s generation.

There is something cool about being just this good:

– we’re not good enough to be disappointed.
– we’re not bad enough to be embarrassed.
– we can just have fun.

It’s like that feeling you get after 2.25 glasses of whisky. Or like going to work after you’ve given your notice.

PS 15-13 = .585 winning percentage = 44 wins

“It’s just a generational thing, I assume. The Bulls matter more to dudes of mine and Al’s generation.”

Just to clarify, by “I don’t get the Bulls hate vibe anymore” I meant that I personally am not afflicted by it, not that I don’t understand it.

Oh, believe me, I was at a lot of those Jordan games and had my guts eviscerated a billion times, including the double-nickel game. But for me it was more about Jordan than the Bulls per se.

I hated the Heat, Pacers and Pistons with a passion as well.

But there is no team I actively root against in ANY sport more than the Celts, no matter what year or who they play or how good they are.

Which makes this year vary unsettling to me. We all know what a championship-level team looks like, and they have that look right now. The only hope is that the Bucks are healthy and knock them out in the ECFs, but even that is not a given.

And none of the WC teams looks particularly scary. I think whoever gets out of the EC wins, barring injury of course.

Just to clarify, by “I don’t get the Bulls hate vibe anymore” I meant that I personally am not afflicted by it, not that I don’t understand it.

Oh, totally, I just mean that I think for people who saw those games when they were younger, it is harder to differentiate Jordan from the Bulls, ya know? If I didn’t grow up with Jordan always on the Bulls, it would surely hit me differently, like it does you. Like all NFL fans when the Patriots got good, it was hard to even give a shit for many years, because we had all spent decades of no one giving a shit about the Patriots (even when they made it to the Super Bowl twice!). Eventually the novelty of the Patriots suddenly being good was over. 😉

And I’m sure the Bulls were like that for you. Just another team before they got Jordan, while for me, they were always the Jordan Bulls.

I hated the Bulls but not MJ. I was in awe of him but hated the rest of the team especially Phil Jackson for being so damn smug and arrogant in his interviews.

But living in Miami during those years there is probably no organization I hate more in professional sports than the Miami Heat.

Poor Taj Gibson started at center tonight for a badly depleted Wizards team that gave up 98 points in the paint against the Nuggets. Jokic scored 43 points and missed 3 shots. (0-2 from 3)

It’s so interesting how players sometimes put themselves into worse positions just sort of out of pride or whatever. Taj left the Knicks for what amounted to $300,000. You would think he’d have preferred to be here, but he was irked that they cut him and expected him to resign for the vet minimum, so he took $300,000 more than the vet minimum with Washington.

I don’t know BC, probably best for Taj he didn’t try to stay with us…

at this stage all Taj most likely still wants to do is get out on the court and play, if he was here with us, that wouldn’t happen…

drose probably wishes he was on the wiz, or any other team where he could get time out on the court…

Gibson barely plays for the Wizards, either. He was only playing tonight because of injuries.

I’m really not sure Gibson would be employed by us if he didn’t go to the wizards. And I doubt he would have got more playing time here than there if we did have him on the roster

The Knicks made a big push to re-sign him. He was irked at them for cutting him, so he took the Wizards’ slightly larger offer. I’m sure he knew he wasn’t going to play much either place, he was just irked that he turned down more money from another team before last season (I think the Spurs) for a straight two-year deal to take a non-guaranteed 1+1 from the Knicks and then they cut him and wanted him to come back with a pay-cut. It happens fairly frequently, where guys will make decisions out of pride.
