After reading the report on KP I’m a bit worried. If we sign him to a long term deal and he comes back but is broken goods, where does that put us? So, do we want him to play this year just to see? Will that hinder his recovery? But it could all be a ploy to tank. And what will other teams pay for him that we need to match? If we don’t sign him long term, can he walk after the contract is up? All these questions have me worried.
KP posted a picture yesterday that he was already running. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him sometime around the all star break.
I saw a report that Zion was down to 270.
KP then responded to Fizdale’s comments — or perhaps to the way the media reported on those comments — with Instagram pics of him sprinting. I’m hoping it was a shot at the media and not his coach. KP can be a drama queen, and given the Fizdale/Gasol stuff, I really don’t want to see beef between player and coach here, especially months before Porzingis is ready to play again.
And literally yesterday Strato was suggesting that this would only be handled logically.
There is so much potential for this to be mishandled. Appealing to a major free agent should be the 1,000th most important factor in this decision.

I know I may be overreacting to their respective starts but I think it’s the Raptors and Bucks who will be competing to avoid the Celtics. The Bucks look outstanding behind Budenholzer.
I like Fizdale, but he was the second best coach who wanted this job by a significant margin.
In a logical world the Knicks staff and KP’s “people” would be in some form of up to date communication regarding what he is doing. Fizdale may be too busy coaching the players he has to be up to the minute with KP’s rehab.

The scary thing is that they’re doing this while Giannis is, for the most part, struggling a bit. He’s averaging a career high 4.7 turnovers per game, shooting .087 from three and getting to the line a bit less, so once he hits his stride there’s still room for improvement for this team. He picked up 5 fouls and barely played in the 3rd and it didn’t matter.
It’s not even just hate for the Celtics, I really want to see a 7 game ECF matchup between Giannis and the Bucks and Leonard and the Raptors. That will be epic.
This is nothing novel, but the Celtics offense is so anemic right now that I’d want to catch them in the playoffs. At this point in the season, the samples should start to be reliable, and what I see represented is an offense that can’t put the ball in the hoop and can’t draw fouls.
Brown is in bust mode — he’s shooting .466 TS% on career-worst shooting at the rim, behind the arc and from 10-23 feet. He’s not even getting to the rim, seeing a dunk rate less than half of what it was the previous two years. Smart has seen his usage plummet while turning the ball at the same rate as always. Rozier and Tatum also can’t seem to find the rim.
I don’t think this offense is going to end up at 27, but at this point, it’s going to take a heroic streak of hot shooting to bring them back into the top-10 range they’ll need to have a contender’s MOV.
The Bucks are, so far, easily the best team in the league. They have a MOV of nearly +14, a 16+ SRS, the league’s 3rd-best offensive and 2nd-best defense (the Celtics are head and shoulders above them with a -1.4 margin at #1) and just thoroughly dominated the Warriors on the road. For reference, the ’96 Bulls had an SRS of 11.8 and the ’17 Warriors were 11.35.

I honestly believe Fiz’s remarks were a tank ploy/managing expectations comment and the media blew it way out of proportion. I think they’re going to be extra cautious and that could mean KP being out for most of the season. There is no reason to rush him back at all. I think KP’s instagram photos were in response to the overly sensational headlines.
I’d love to see Boston lose in the second round while completely healthy. I wonder how the media would defend Brad Stevens then.
In all seriousness, Boston doesn’t have the top level talent that Milwaukee and Toronto have. Lowry/Leonard/Ibaka and Bledsoe/Middleton/Antetokounmpo are both better trios than Irving/Tatum/Horford. It’s also looking like Budz and Nurse aren’t a huge drop off from what you’re getting out of Stevens (Budz and Stevens might even be the same tier coach). The Celtics are deeper than anybody, but depth doesn’t win in the playoffs as much as top level talent and match ups do. It doesn’t matter if you have Hayward, Tatum, Morris, and Brown on the wings if all they’re going to do is take turns getting roasted by Kawhi or Giannis.
I’m looking at things through anti Celtics colored glasses, but the Celtics aren’t exactly doing themselves any early season favors and may not be the clear favorite in the East this year or in the coming years. Embiid, Simmons, Saric, and Fultz have yet to reach their primes. If we land one of the 3DF (people love Zion here but even Cam Reddish is a 6’9” 3 level scoring two way wing who doesn’t need to dominate the ball to give you 40), KP comes back healthy and with stamina, and a big free agent signs up? How much worse than Boston’s current team would Porzingis/Reddish/Durant be?
The thing about the NBA is teams are catching up faster than we expect in the moment. Durant’s Warriors almost lost in the WCFs. Boston’s status as clear contenders was based off of beating Philly in five, but they got pushed to 7 by Giannis and what was an inferior Milwaukee team to this year’s version. I don’t think Boston gets out of the 2nd round, and I think that opens up the door for Kyrie to consider the Knicks in July.

Melo’s statline last night: 20 minutes played at -22, two points on 1-for-11 shooting (including six misses from three), five boards, zero assists, zero steals or blocks, and a turnover.
Budz is a head and shoulder above Stevens.
The Celtics offense in the 4th quarter comes down to Kyrie Irving doing his one on one thing, and they live and die by whether he can execute difficult shots.
Tatum had a ridiculous TS as a rookie of .586, including 43% from 3. Now he’s down to .511 and 34%. And Jowles laid out what an awful season Jaylen Brown is having.
I’d take either of them on my team, but for all we know (or hope) Boston may have peaked last year, and no longer look like clear favorites to win the East.
Believe it or not Frank O there was some discussion of Melo’s game last night. Not gloating mind you, just a fair hearted, cheerful consideration of his contribution to the Rockets.
I thought it important to note the Melo’s only bucket of the night came on a goaltend.

Aside: as a die hard Patrick Ewing fan, that name angered me. The Knicks were always better with Patrick Ewing. They went from a 57 win team to a 43 win team when he got hurt it 97. And they went from a perennial contender to 18 years of garbage since we traded him.
We had one good series against Indiana because a young Marcus Camby was unleashed and came into his own and Allan Houston got hot for a few games. Then we got summarily trounced in a finals against San Antonio where we desperately needed Ewing.
The premises of the Ewing Theory will always be faulty. Teams don’t play better when they lose their best player. They play better when their departed best player is overrated and unproductive.
Ewing was at the tail end of his career and was demonstrably bad at basketball in 1999. Of course they got better.
This has more to do with roster construction than Ewing still being a force of nature like he was in the early 90s. The Knicks were so used to getting 2800-3100 minutes of Ewing every year that he was the only C on the 1996-97 team, and virtually the only C on the 1995-96 team (Matt Fish played 17 minutes). No wonder they were fucked when he went down with an injury.
It’s a similar idea to the pro-Carmelo arguments about his on/off numbers: that since the Knicks were markedly worse without Carmelo, it’s clear evidence that he’s an objectively-good player. It’s not that simple. You simply can’t expect to be deep at one particular position when you’ve built a team around a highly-paid player like Ewing or Anthony.
For the millionth time: player reputation falls slower than player production does. This is why Carmelo Anthony is still employed in the NBA, just as Ewing was given 2100 minutes to be an awful player in Seattle, and then one last rodeo in Orlando, where he was even worse. Finally, after several years of steep decline (from a not-so-elite apogee), the league — save Morey & co. — has wised up to the fact that Carmelo is a horrible basketball player.
All fair points. The theory is awful on numerous levels.

The Knicks say Lance Thomas underwent arthroscopic surgery of his left knee for removal of loose bodies on Thursday. He will be re-evaluated in a month and will start rehab immediately.
I mean, it’s Simmons, he can be entertaining at times but he’s not much more than a random fan spouting hot takes but with a decent to good historical background on the NBA.
Well, that’s one problem solved, in terms of the rotation and appeasing our veteran players. Lance wasn’t likely to rock the boat anyway, and Fiz had already cut way back on his playing time. But now there won’t even be the temptation to give him minutes that should be force fed to Knox or Dotson.
It will be handled logically in the “real world”.
KP and his handlers WILL make a risk/reward decision on playing without an extension and consider what the doctors are telling them.
The Knicks will make a decision based on what the doctors are telling them and whether they want to tank or showcase him to potential free agents.
The rest of it is pinheads in the media creating controversy and “fake news”.
I’m not sure why Fizdale said what he said (if it was eve reported accurately and without spin). but he may have wanted to temper fan expectations or he may be out of the loop on KP’s day to day training. This is not a story other than to media pinheads.
They don’t need a streak. They just need to play better at some point.
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best possible offense, if they are a 3 until the final month of the season and then put it all together and become an 8.5 for that last month, no one is going to care what their average was for the year. They will be an 8.5 going into the playoffs.
If I had to guess, I’d say he started the season last year shooting above his true skill level and probably had a lot of open shots because he did not have a reputation as a great 3p shooter coming out of college . Now they are guarding him tighter and it’s probably just a random below trend period. The reality for his skill level right now is probably somewhere between the two.
Fizdale’s comments were pretty sensible, actually. KP strikes me as very sensitive, sometimes juvenile.

That’s fair, Owen. But if you were upset, would you pull your coach aside and say “hey, coach, I actually can sprint” or would you passive aggressively post a picture of you sprinting?
Absolutely, but Budz didn’t actually want this job. He wanted the head coaching job and also be the de facto GM. He was a bad GM in Atlanta, so that was asking for too much. Once that was off the table, he chose the better team, which was logical for him to do.
I would have liked to see the offers on the table before the ACL injury. Kinda feels like we have 1,000,000 shares of Theranos stock in October 2015.
In this day and age? I am pretty sure if I were 22 I would have done the exact same thing. Control your own narrative. I don’t think Fiz was being shady, I think it was sort of a goof, but it was definitely a strange one.
The Bucks are playing really well, but I don’t consider them a serious contender against the Warriors. I’m not sure anyone is a serious contender unless the Warriors have a major injury. The Rockets look old. The window may have shut for them when Paul got hurt in the finals last year. The Thunder may be the 2nd best team in the west or even NBA right now. They have a better team and now deeper bench for the first time in awhile.
I think that’s kind of unfair – Theranos was always based on a lie, and then on lies to cover up those lies. KP has actually produced at a very high level already in this league. He will be fine. He has a simple ACL tear without other ligament or cartilage damage that they are taking their time with. The team does not need/want him to come back too early, both in terms of being cautious and also because there’s no benefit in really winning right now. I think we’ll see KP sometime in early-mid March playing 10 min/game initially and then up to 20 min/game in April, just to prove that he’s healthy.
No, he hasn’t. And this is bringing me back to argument after argument of this team between 2011 and 2017. We Knickerbloggers really need to collectively learn how to identify elite players, and on offense, Porzingis is decidedly not one. Upside? Yeah. Unicorn? Sure. Producing at a high level? Fuck and no. Absolutely fucking not.

Porzingis has this whole organization by the balls. I’d be genuinely stunned if they have the fortitude to offer him anything less than the max. They might even throw in a no-trade clause.

@47: eh, I think this is just “office politics” that’s being reported on. So far, Perry and Mills (not solely Mills, but with Perry) have demonstrated taking the long view of things.
Remember: Steph Curry signed an ultimately under-market contract off his rookie deal due to his injury history. And Philly built in protections in their deal for Embiid. I know it’s conventional wisdom to assume the Knicks will make the least prudent decision that’s availed to them, but I have enough comfort in Perry to entertain the thought that they just might be smart with Porzingis’ next contract.
Porzingis has a reputation to guard. It’s his right to do so, and if I were him, I’d be watching my future earning potential like a hawk. Fizdale shouldn’t comment on his recovery beyond the doctors’ prognoses that have been made public. Given Fizdale’s reputation as a players’ coach, it appears that it was an unintended foot-in-mouth thing, and by “foot” I mean a single digit of his smallest toe. It’s not that big a deal. He should apologize to Porzingis in private and move on.

I really get annoyed at the KP is spoiled narrative that some fans have about him. Its all based on one incident. Him skipping an exit meeting. Shouldn’t we be thanking him for the rest of our lives for skipping that meeting with Phil? Phil was a disaster and KP knew it. He didn’t want to put up with his BS and by skipping that meeting, it pissed Phil off, who then wanted to trade him and Dolan finally had enough and fired Phil. The Theranos analogy is still an inaccurate one. That company was running a glorified Ponzi scheme with no actual substance to sell beyond the idea of product that didn’t actually exist. Whether you think KP will be elite or not in the future, the fact is that he has actually produced at league average with flashes of potential. No, I’d rather compare his NBA value to Tesla right now – he seems to present a bold look into the future that could redefine the field but there are definite production delays and performance issues under a questionable management which make one wonder if his stock is woefully overvalued at the present moment. Just like observers are wondering if Tesla will be the next Ford or DeLorean we’re left wondering if KP will be the next Dirk or a broke down Bargiani.

My point was that Theranos had a product that could produce results, but functioned far worse than their claims suggested. Porzingis has a reputation as a guy who should be making All-NBA teams, but even a cursory glance at his stats shows that’s not even close to the case.
Perhaps if Theranos had raised another $500M, they would have cut their failure rate by 90% and produced a revolutionary product. (Probably not.) Perhaps if we give Porzingis a supermax, he’ll turn into an MVP candidate. (But, y’know… probably not.)

The reason why I am getting bogged in this specific point is because I do think the underlying thrust of your stock analogy is correct but the example is wrong. KP’s basketball trajectory reminds me so much of Tesla’s down to even analogous social media bombast you see from Elon Musk designed to appeal to a fanbase for branding purpose. There’s even the same pressure to speed up production now at Tesla the way KP is being pressured to speed up his recovery. To carry the analogy further, the question everyone is betting on is whether or not the product will be worth the hype.

One thing I love about Fizdale is that he knows how to communicate with people. I love that about him. I didn’t see the video of KP running, but I saw the photo of him in the air running. That calms a lot of my fears. I just hope he keeps working and works out with the team in the gym but never sees the floor in a game this season.
Pity about Lance and Courtney both being out with injuries. It hurts our chances, slim as they already were, of trading them. That sucks.

i had one of those achilles tears once upon a time…one second i was running around the court with a buddy of mine feebly putting up shots on the basket, the next i was on the ground spinning on my butt thinking someone had shot me – it’s really loud…
did end up getting me out of an unannounced piss test the next day, which pretty much would have ended my military career at the time…

It’s not just about what’s in the boxscore. It’s about the boxscore, what’s not in the boxscore, the role of the player, and the skillsets of his teammates.
He’s a 7’3″ 40% 3p shooter; 80% FT shooter; that drags PFs and Cs away from the basket, has the athleticism to score on lobs or put back dunks and can create off the dribble. He has virtually every skill you could want out of a big man other than a really good post game against smaller players (he’s still weak)
The models don’t capture his contribution to other players by merely being on the floor and generating space for them to penetrate and get more offensive rebounds. They can’t capture how poorly he’s been used or how his own decision making is still poor. And of course they don’t capture that he’s a high level defender in the paint and on help defense.
He could easily score 15 points a night with at 60 TS%. Then you’d like him better, but that would a monumentally dumb use of his broad skill set.
He isn’t a Kevin Knox that needs to improve in several areas to be really good, but is young, athletic, and a hard worker so we hope he can get there.
He’s isn’t Frank that has to improve his 3 point shot, handle, confidence, and ability to shoot when defended.
KP already has all the skills in high enough quantities.
1. He has to gets stronger (which is a mortal lock as he matures physically)
2. He has to be used properly and learn proper shot selection. (one would hope Fizdale will use him better & he’ll learn, but the latter is a question mark)
3. He has to stay healthy (major risk)

Yeah, this is really approaching Melo levels of “everything else is at fault except this dude”. Advanced stats, coaches, front offices and his health.
The thing is, it might be true that Porzingis could scorw 15 a game in 60 ts% on lower usage, but the fact that he doesn’t and instead has a higher usage with a heavy efficiency drop literally means he should not be a max guy exactly like Jowles and others have been arguing, because true max players are precisely the ones who can maintain very high usage rates and affect the game positively in multiple, efficient ways. There’s a bunch of those guys in the league, and by giving a max to a guy who’s not on this level is effectively limiting the ceiling of your team relative to the teams that do have such stats. If Porzingis’ bad stats are so related to his high usage, then it only shows that his value is limited as a max guy, 1st or 2nd best player on a very good team.
I just think it can’t be a coincidence that the really good winning teams have multiple “advanced stats darlings” on them while the Knicks have had misused superstars for a decade now and can’t win games.
