The more I think about it, the more I believe that the Sixers are going to be really good.
One of the things that Nurse (and the FO) should consider is handling Embiid like Brown (and the FO) handled Mitch this year. Meaning that he should play 15-20 MPG as a game-wrecking “virtual 6th-7th man.” Focus on letting LeBron develop Huk and Bona into bonafide rotation C’s.
Then after December 15, consider making a move to add more shooting.

Alan, that is awesome. Nary a day goes by when my son and I don’t embed a quote from that movie into our conversation. In fact, he just quoted Tuco a few minutes ago.
Definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of movies, possibly #1. I first saw it as a tween at a the Wakefield theater in the North Bronx, as part of a quadruple feature: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, Hang ’em High, and The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly. I have seen it hundreds of times since.
Quentin Tarantino considers it #1, so it’s not outlandish to think so. But I have yet to meet a woman who thinks all that highly of it, certainly not my wife or two daughters. In that sense, it might be the quintessential dickpic.
Swifty, I don’t get how you can say that replacing Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr. with Jaylen Brown and LeBron James is not much of an upgrade.
They have massive question marks for sure. But losing Mitch will definitely hurt us in matching up with them. I think the gap has narrowed significantly, if not disappeared altogether.

Listened to Rich Paul’s podcast last night (there’s not much to do on a Friday night while your 7 year old’s sleeping), and boy do I think these guys miscalculated.
They think Sixers fans are a sleeping giant that just got woken up. They think Philly is starving for an NBA title like NY was. They think Philly’s going to embrace LeBron and turn out for the Sixers like NY did for the Knicks this spring. He literally said that.
I think they’ve got amnesia. Did they not see what happened at the two Sixers home games?
Philly is an Eagles town. It’s a college basketball town. Hell it’s even a hockey town.
It’s not an NBA town. The city didn’t sustain its connection to the team during the lean years like NY & the Bay Area did with the Knicks & Warriors. And they’re not nearly as thirsty for a Sixers title as they are for NFL training camp.
I also don’t think they’re particularly eager to embrace a billionaire merc who is living in NY and taking Blades down to Philly.
It’s an upgrade but IMO it’s not enough of one to go from being curb stomped in 4 games to winning a series.
LeBron is even older than Paul George. They still have no bench and Embiid is still a huge liability on defense.
One thing that is for sure is that there are gonna be lots of Philly games on national TV. Knicks-Sixers, Celts-Sixers, Cavs-Sixers, Heat-Sixers, Spurs-Sixers, Thunder-Sixers…I’m interested to see the opening night and Christmas Day games.
Keep in mind half of that curb stomp happened without OG Anunoby. And KAT only averaged 23 mpg. We curb stomped them with one hand tied behind our back.

Brunson scored 116 pts on 78 shots. And their defense is probably worse than last year.
ESPN shared some second spectrum data:
LeBron was in the lower 6% of the NBA in shots contested per 100 possessions last year.
He also ranked 579th out 582 players in defensive speed.
He really needed to join a team with a good defense. He did not.
James Harden was 582nd, btw. And I think we will very likely see Brunson do to LeBron in the playoffs what he did to Harden in game 1.
See, to me, what’s being overstated is the whole “Philly is not an NBA town” narrative. The LeBron James Travelling Circus is gonna be a red hot ticket. Come playoff time, Knicks fans are gonna have to pay a lot more for thost tix than they did this year.
BTW part of the reason why the Sixers are less popular right now is due to horrific management for the last 20 years. I know there were lots of Hinkie “trust the process” fans here back in the day, but that long stretch of utter dogshit basketball didn’t help keep fans interested. They haven’t been past the second round of the playoffs since 2001 and haven’t won a title since Moses Malone.
So now that the NBA can make a schedule what do you think the marquee matchups will be? Maybe Philly Boston on opening day or Christmas Day?

Don’t the defending champs get the opening night game, or am I misremembering? If I’m right, you have to think we’re playing the Sixers that night. And the Sixers are playing either us or Boston on Christmas.
Boston played Philly, and Embiid destroyed them. They went 3-1 in his 4 games, only losing his first game back, after starting 1-2. He averaged a 29-9-7 line.
Then the Knicks came and limited Embiid to 19-5-3… or I should say the trio of KAT/Mitch/Huk limited him to that line. Notably, Mitch and Huk are no longer on the team and KAT averaged 7 fouls/36.
Embiid is fully capable of killing us. KAT can’t stay on the floor and Drummond is no Mitch on defense. He’s not even a Huk.
If I’m Adam Silver, I’m opening the season with Sixers-Celtics in Boston. Seems like the biggest no-brainer decision out there.
Knicks-Spurs would also be great theater, but it seems like interconference games usually come later. I’m guessing Knicks-Heat.
The 76ers were a very good team last year when healthy. Embiid and George just had a rough time sustaining their peak form due to injury/age.
Personally, I don’t think the gap between a healthy fresh George and Brown is that large given the role the 76ers need, but Brown is more likely to be healthy and give them his best throughout the playoffs. He can also take over games when Maxey is out. That will make them tougher.
Maxey, Brown, Edgecomb (very likely to improve) and part time Embiid is way more than enough scoring, playmaking and shot creation.
They were going to be a tough out before they got James.
IMO James doesn’t add a lot to the offense. Every point he scores is going to come from someone else that is also a very good scorer. He’s not WAY more efficient. He’s not a super spacer. So I don’t think he’s going to add a lot beyond what they would have been with Jalyen Brown and a couple of bench pieces they added.
Where he’ll be very useful is when the 76ers have injuries. He can step right into the #1 or #2 role and they won’t lose anything.
It’s going to be exciting to watch them just to see how they wind up distributing all that usage when they are all healthy.
I will say one other thing.
The West may have the two favorites to win the championship, but the East is now the better conference.
Criminally underrating Jalen Brown is a big part of what we do here.
I think that the upgrade from Paul George to Brown is absolutely massive. Brown, Maxey, and Edgecombe are a formidable 1-2-3 lineup. Maxey is a better shooter than lots of folks think he is and is still only 25. Edgecombe has massive upside. You can pencil those guys in for 80 points a night.
It really comes down to LeBron. He looked great in the playoffs (38mpg vs. OKC!) but at his age, the falloff can happen at any time. But he and Brown know how to win championships. They are going to have a very positive impact on Maxey and Edgecombe, and on Embiid as well.
The most predictable reason for failure is Embiid’s knees. But this team can be good with Embiid in a smaller role. LeBron is the one guy who can possibly boss Embiid around and tell him “You just worry about doing this and let us worry about doing that” kind of stuff. Embiid’s usage needs to be down in the low 20’s on a team like this. As to his defense, I think they can put enough athleticism around him to limit his deficiencies for 15-20 mpg, then live with the consequences for the other 10 mpg.
But if he breaks down to the point that he’s a net negative down there, then only a massive developmental leap from one of Bona or Huk can save them from a second round playoff exit.
What LeBron adds more than anything else is one of the greatest basketball brains ever to play the game. His b-ball IQ often gets overlooked because of his talent.
The Sixers seemed to me like a disorganized mess last year. Whose tam was it? Maxey’s? George’s? Embiid’s?
Now there should be no question as to whose team it is. LeBron should
basically throw his rings on the table and tell the team that if they want to win a championship, they need to do what he tells them to do. Then it will just be a matter of how much buy-in he gets.

If by “better” you mean “more compelling” I totally agree.
The Knicks should be favored to get the #1 seed, but regardless of where they finish, to get to the finals.
But by how much? That’s the rub. We kinda know what the Knicks are. They are last year’s team, minus whatever was lost in the swapping out of Mitch for Drummond. Same for the Cavs. I guess the Magic have developmental upside, but they are largely the same. Atlanta as well.
But who knows what the Sixers, Heat, Pacers, Celtics, Pistons, or Raptors (if Kawhi deal goes through) will be? All of these teams are dealing with significant roster changes from 2025-26.
Ranking the teams in the East in order is certainly no easy task right now.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly has perhaps the greatest score ever. That shit plays in my head all the time. Perfect cinema.

We kinda bet the farm on KAT being able to fix that. If he doesn’t, we have serious problems.
Our second unit is now a bunch of midgets with a sieve protecting the rim. If the Sixers stagger the minutes so LeBron & Embiid play against Alvarado Deuce Shamet & Drummond they’ll outscore us by 40 pts per 100 possessions.
Sochan IMO just became very important to bring back. With the absence of a real rim protector we can use him to at least patch together a decent switch-everything scheme like the OG-Achiuwa combo that stifled Embiid in the past.
I always preferred A Few Dollars More myself, but I remember my then 5 year old son staring, transfixed, at the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for the entire 2:28 of it once when it was on TV, back before he even spoke much english. He still talks about it today. It really is a sensory tour-de-force.
Love the movie and its score. When my wife and I got married our first dance was to Ecstasy of Gold.
The musical score is insane. I never want the Ecstasy of Gold sequence to stop.
The crazy thing is that it’s really an Eli
Wallach vehicle. Van Cleef disappears for long stretches, Clint is in less than you remember, and is a man of few words even when he’s around. And even though you would never in a million years cast guy like Wallach as a Mexican bandit today, he’s incredible. Carries the whole thing.
At some point in the year there will be a lot of chatter about how much better the Sixers are with Dean Wade in the lineup. I just don’t know if it’s LeBron, Brown, or Embiid they’ll be talking about as the missing guy. I suspect Embiid is the most likely culprit, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a lot of chatter about Brown, too.
I also think A Few Dollars More is a better movie. The story/plot is more compelling, IMHO.
But I understand why The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is more popular and important to film history. Everything is gorgeous. The 3 leads fit nicely into archetypal roles. Morricone made the best score in film history. It can be enjoyed on so many levels.
Embiid’s health looms VERY large over that team. He has averaged 29 regular season games over the past two years and was a complete traffic cone on defense in this last postseason. He is useless in transition defense, can’t guard a pick and roll, and is hapless trying to guard anybody on the perimeter.
He’s going to be 32 this year and his injury history is beyond extensive. Maybe they catch lightning in a bottle and he manages to get into good playing shape by the time the playoffs start, but I wouldn’t bet on it. His mobility looks completely shot to me, and foul spamming is his one great remaining tool.
You want more evidence that Embiid’s athleticism is falling off a cliff? He averaged 8.8 rebounds per 36 last year. He doesn’t jump anymore. His TRB% was 13.3, same as Guerschon Yabusele.
I think we put Brunson on Edgecomb.
Even if we didn’t, I’m more than fine with that matchup now. If they want to give VJ the ball instead of Maxey Brown or LeBron that’s a win every time.
Either way you’re defending the Sixers as a team, with all 5 guys packing the paint and daring them to shoot from outside.
To put it perspective, Josh Hart would be the best shooter in the Sixers starting lineup.
I actually don’t think I’ve seen For a Few Dollars More. Just Fistful and Good/Bad/Ugly. May need to rectify that.
Morricone is one of the GOATs. His efficiency #s are off the charts for a film composer as prolific as he was. I’ve lost count of the number of otherwise forgettable films I’ve watched that were enhanced by his musical contributions.
Today, John Williams is held up as the gold standard. He’s arguably the greatest living film composer but IMO he remains on the second tier behind the three All Time Greats: Morricone, Herrmann (Hitchcock, Taxi Driver) and Rota (Fellini, Godfather)
While Williams is probably best known for his iconic Star Wars score, I continue to regard Jaws as his best work. The repeated two-note Dum-Dum-Dum-Dum shark motif really ratcheted up that film’s horror quotient, elevating it from an above average summer blockbuster to an all time classic film. The Jaws score is on a par with any of the work by the three GOATs.
LeBron is gonna be 42. He was still quite good last year, but in the long run Father Time is undefeated. One of these years VERY soon is gonna be the year he just gets too damn old.

I’m a bit of a Civil War buff, and one of the most compelling parts of the movie for me is the way the 3-character drama is set in a satire of the western theater of that war. Most popular Civil War pics from that time period sort of sanitized or glorified things.
My son and I have talked about who would be best for the three roles if the movie was made today, and we agree that finding a better Tuco than Eli Wallach would be nearly impossible. You could probably have Daniel Day-Lewis play Angel Eyes (he could pull of any of the three roles) but he’d be least great as Tuco. Maybe Hugh Jackman as Blondie?

For a Few Dollars More is a great movie, but not iconic (as in firmly in the GOAT discussion) like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The plot is kind of contrived, if you ask me. But it moves more quickly and Leone’s artistic genius is perhaps more evident. The score is great as well. But I don’t think they are anywhere close when taken as a whole.
One thing I hope we can agree on is that Once Upon a Time in the West was a massive disappointment.
Fun exercise to think of re-casting the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, definitely in my pantheon of top five movies. I suppose today either Timothy Olyphant or Daniel Craig could play Blondie. He’s too old now, but Danny Trejo would have been a great Tuco back in the day. I’m at a loss for Angel Eyes.

More atmospheric, wicked and drone than the known trilogy of Leone with Fonda, Cardinale and Bronson kickin ass while maestro Morricone fills the dry deserted yellow images of Sergio with psychedelic harmonica and experimental ambient sounds.
KAT coudn’t stay on the floor in neither game 3 or game 4. Was in foul trouble in 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters. Didn’t have to be play a single minute in 4th cause the game was over by then. Not sure how we can say that KAT domintes Embiid but sure, to the winner goes the spoils.

My favorite music cue of all time is “Scene d’Amour” from Vertigo, scored by Bernard Hermann. It’s the scene in the film where Judy emerges from the bathroom transformed back into Madeleine. It’s a long cue, almost five minutes, and the way it builds tension and then erupts into this massive romantic theme, and then resolves in a way that still portends doom…
What a cue.
I also like Jonny Greenwood’s work for PTA. In some cases, I like the music better than the films themselves.
Re: women and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, I can confirm that there is at least one who loves it: my partner, who is obsessed with those movies, though admittedly it’s because her father loved them. But still!
In addition to the excellent film composers already mentioned, two additional ones who I think will make it into the pantheon if they keep at it are Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never) and Mica Levi. Lopatin is at least half the reason why the Safdie movies he’s worked on are so kinetic (my favorite being Good Time).
Levi is likewise immensely talented. The soundtracks for Under the Skin and The Zone of Interest are some of my favorites ever.
Also: kinda surprised that Alan didn’t give a shout out to Midnight Run composer Danny Elfman, best known for his contributions to Tim Burton’s movies.
Another score I really enjoy is Ry Cooder’s for Paris, Texas. Highly atmospheric and an ideal fit for the mood of that film.
Strange dude here, but i love Neil Young’s music for Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man.

Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) is one of my favorite musicians on the planet and in my opinion the greatest electronic musician of his era. His scores are great, and if you like those I heartily recommend his solo albums, especially Replica and R Plus Seven.
I’m always interested in whatever he’s doing. He seems like a musician from the future.

The Nuggets’ SB Nation article on today’s Spencer Jones offer from OKC focuses on the luxury tax implications, rather than the second apron, but it’s six of one, a half dozen of the other. The second apron happens to be in the vicinity of the payroll level where the luxury tax becomes onerous.

I doubt it. Adam Silver is probably pretty happy. He loves parity, or at least the illusion of parity. The aprons and the luxury tax are clearly having the desired impact.
I should qualify that by pointing out that parity is going to be an issue in the West. Obviously OKC and SAS are bucking the parity trend. OKC is an outlier because of the many clever moves (trades, draft picks, free agency) that Presti made over several years before the aprons were a thing. The Spurs are an outlier because they hit the lottery of lotteries but also have hit on some of their picks. It is actually possible that the aprons work against parity in the West, being that the other teams that are in the neighborhood of being competitive (DEN, HOU, LAL, Min) are just not close enough to get there via trades or free agency while staying below the second apron.

KAT was the third best player on the team during the playoff run after Brunson and OG. If this is an obvious fact and the NBA is now a hard cap league, then he can’t continue to be the highest paid player on the team.
He’s turning 31 in November. I think his extension should be for 5yr and $212.5m. Same exact money as OG but from his 31 to 36yr old seasons. Think this is more than generrous compenastion for a returning champion who gets to finish his career as a hometown hero and potentially become a top 10 Knick of all time.
Leon has no choice but to trade him if he’s not willing to accept a pay cut. Kat’s peak earning season has to be this upcomimg 2026-27 season and focus on longevity and legacy instead.
I agree, Director. The thing is, KAT has achieved a celebrity status in NYC that will be very lucrative going forward. He must now know that taking less money in salary can be more than made up for in other ways, including perhaps as part of Dolan’s media empire.
And the bottom line is that he is not going to get teams into a bidding war for his services. Maybe there’s a shitty team with cap space (or an expansion team) that would be willing to throw the max they could at him, but does he really want that now?
If I were Leon, I would offer something in the $43-50M AAV range for 3-4 years, i.e. 25%-ish of the cap. Maybe if he declines his option in 2027-28 at 35% and takes 25% instead, you give him an extra year.
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is a film that has sort of slipped from the cultural consciousness compared to what it meant as one time, but that is an amazing score by John Williams. Anyone who was alive at that time remembers the signature five note motif, but the score as a whole is experimental, inventive, and so emotionally powerful.
I don’t know if The Sting soundtrack counts as an original score but it was pretty awesome.
Yeah, that was my thought process, you give him that 5th year player option at age 36 as a trade off for lowering his earnings in 27-28 season from ~$61m to ~43m.

Thing is, OG didn’t really outperform his contract (largest in team history) before these playoffs. But he had one of the greatest performances in playoff history, especially for a guy who was thought of as a excellent role player but not a superstar, or even an all-star.
Whatever premium might have been paid for him, it wasn’t enough.
KAT skillset would be very hard to replace. Having a center you can run an offense through and the opposing team has to defend is a massive luxury . Good luck on the downgrade if it comes to that .
