Sure, but if we were going to do that, we would have already done it. There have been up to 20 or so tall stiffs out there (see Nick Richards, Jamarious Sharp, etc.) that we could have thrown a little money at (not to mention any number of them that we could have, well you know, drafted or something), but we’re obviously choosing not to go that route.

Diawara was one of them. The text on him was both accurate and discouraging.
He wasn’t the only disappointment or even the worst, but he was definitely bad.
Both Kings and Nets fans will feel more angst than Knicks fans since their picks mostly didn’t do well either and they are both rebuilding teams who want to hit in the draft.
Sequence of events:
7/1: Mitch and Huk sign elsewhere;
7/2: Chris Haynes reports NYK made “feverish” efforts to trade for Yves Missi, with multiple trade pitches declined by NOP;
7/3: Drummond signs with NYK;
7/18: NYK gives Moussa Cisse a (tepid) offer sheet that only guarantees 50% of minimum salary for the initial season.
Upshot: while we don’t know who/what was in NYK’s trade pitches for Yves Missi, it’s very possible that Deuce was included. But the immediately subsequent acquisition of Andre Drummond may have changed the context of NYK’s interest in a third big man.
Despite the skepticism of many here about Drummond, Knicks may be prepared to view him as a #2, until proven otherwise. Which means they could now be looking for a #3, a backup to a backup, and not willing to trade the same assets that were on offer for Yves Missi, prior to the Drummond signing.
I watched a few minutes from his 1st game in Vegas. He had 3 excellent passes to open shooters. All 3 of them missed, but Diawara’s set-up was perfect. And like others commented, leading the offense is not his game.
I’d be extremely surprised if that were the case, timo. Deuce is so much more valuable than Missi.
Respectfully, value does not always come from “which player is better.” It often comes down to “which player is better for this particular team at this particular time.” We needed Missi right now more than we need Deuce. As we proved last year, it’s not about having an All-Star Team of players—it’s about being greater than the sum of your parts. We were the ultimate “greater than the sum of our parts” team this past season as we waltzed to the championship trophy.
Hollinger must be so happy after the postseason that he finally has something bad to say about the Knicks.

Let’s not forget that Leon’s last off-season was pretty much a disaster. He wanted to hire Jason Kidd. He likely promised Brogdon a rotation spot. Mike Brown was at best his 5th choice. Yabu was overweight when signed. He tried to trade KAT and it leaked.
But we know the rest of the story! In Leon I trust.
There were so many vile alternative universes from last year that it’s mind-boggling. I guess that’s likely true of any championship run (I wouldn’t know), but even just OG’s tip-in — from the guy who might literally be the worst at-the-rim shooter I’ve seen in the NBA, at least since Mudiay, who was clearly told by his coach to dunk everything if you can. Just inexplicable.
But you know, wonderful.
This is the way Leon has tended to operate:
1. He identifies the perfect player for the role/position he needs.
2. He has some preliminary talks to that player’s team behind the scenes, but nothing happens.
3. There are rumors of his interest in that player.
4. Months later or even the following year he makes a deal for that player
5. There is some debate about the deal here with many people thinking he overpaid and threw away value.
6. The debate continues with every up and down game to game, week to week, month to month
7. The Knicks win a championship and that player is a huge part of the success.
Leon is going to get an upgrade at backup center. We just don’t know who or when yet, but Missi seems like one target.

They have literally one pass-first player in LeBron, and he still needs the ball in his hands because he’s not a shooter. The defense will be mediocre at best. Seems like the team will only go as far as Joel Embiid’s knees do.

It is kinda cool that we’ll presumably get high-stakes games against LeBron. That’s something the Leon Era Knicks haven’t had. Maybe they’ll even take a game off of us now.

After all of the moves the Sixers made, I think Bron going there is overkill and a bad fit. But if there’s any current player that can make it work, it is LeBron. Problem is- there are too many people who need the ball on that team. This may be the year where we see a huge dip in scoring from LeBron down to 15-18 a night. The good news for Philly is they have enough offense where they can afford load management with Embiid and LeBron. The move kinda pisses me off, but I’m intrigued by it at the same time. An Embiid/Bron/Brown/Edgecomb/Maxey lineup is awful scary on paper. There’s gonna have to be so much sacrifice across the board there. For perspective, it took a bunch of guys who have been known to be team first guys until the playoffs to get comfortable with their sacrifices for our Knicks to win it all. And the last time LeBron had a “superteam”, it took them until the next season. And I swear, I better not see Embiid talking any shit if and when they beat us in a game after needing so much help(including Mitch being gone) to beat us.

Well, I’ll get to hear less shit talking nonsense from my Heat fan friend. So I got that going for me.
The 76ers were miles behind us last season and we crushed them mercilessly, and I do think they’ll be better but… they’re still miles behind us.
So is LeBron being opportunistic, or damaging his legacy? It feels a little soft waiting until Philly gets Brown and the Knicks lose the one guy who gives Embiid fits to sign there. Softer than KD going to the Dubs when he did, IMO- even though Bron is 41 and KD was in his prime. Philly had way more firepower when LeBron signed than the Dubs did when KD signed there. The way the Dubs played only made it feel like they had more firepower because they had real shooters

Agreed, i think we and Indy are the favorites to be in the ECF. Maybe Boston and Cleveland can be there, if things go right. Philly and Toronto (with Kawhi) have their chances, but only if things go PERFECTLY right. Detroit is a wild card for me, they certainly can go far, but also disappoint big style.
Bron did his due diligence in speaking to his new potential teammates and I’m confident that he liked what he heard in terms of players sacrificing touches for the greater good. He still has an incredibly high hoops IQ and will help with cohesion. 6ers can essentially save JoJo* and Bron for the playoffs and will be a formidable opponent. We learned this year that regular season finish is not so important. *
*JoJo’s condition is a huge variable even if he essentially takes off most of the regular season.
I’m not worried about the 76ers.
They already had enough scoring and playmaking. They’ll be better in the regular season when a guy like Maxey or Brown is out because James can make up the scoring and/or playmaking gap easily, but this is not a case where the whole is greater than the parts. It’s not a plus fit.
And there’s this, we have (Taylor) Swift and the other teams in the EC don’t. 😀

Don;t forget, when we met Indy in the playoffs it was Rick Carlisle vs.. Tom Thibodeau. I trust Mike Brown to make adjustments that Thibs wouldn’t have, so Carlisle doesn’t scare me as much as he used to.

Lebron on Philly is pretty weird and I’m not sure how well he really fits there especially post Jaylen Brown trade. And a lot of Philly’s potential is still wrapped up in Embiid’s health; maybe this allows Philly to load manage Embiid even in the playoffs.
But replacing Paul George’s 37 games/1100 minutes with 71/2400 of Jaylen Brown and 60/2000 of Lebron plus age/experience related improvements for Maxey and Edgecombe should be enough to improve their 45 wins/-0.1 NRtg closer to something that looks like a contender.

100% At a minimum, I would expect if that if Brown stumbled on a lineup that really worked in Game 1 and turned a close game into a blowout that he would use that lineup again at some point during the series.

While it’s a weird decision, I don’t really get why people think it’s a weird fit. They had no power forward and now they have a guy who was 21-6-7 with a .594 TS% and a 3.5 BPM last year. On this team his points will go down but his rebounding and assists will likely go up quite a bit. If he weren’t 102 years old and sharing the front court with the superstar least likely to be able to perform, it’s a very nice fit.
Okay, from that perspective it’s a weird fit.
But boy, at first glance, outside of The Great and Powerful Huk, their bench truly sucks.
Most satisfying repeat title run:
Beat Philly, Miami and Indy before smacking down Wemby again in the finals (or beating the thunder so we can say we beat both of the best teams in the west).
I see Philadelphia as the the overwhealming favorite to come out the east.
They have three first ballot hall of famers, two league MVPs, two NBA finals MVPs, 4 multi year all-star starters and a young stud of a rookie + championship caliber coaching & a bench of Simmons, Wade, Barlow, Bona/Huk.
Brunson and Hart primary responsibilities of guarding Maxey and VJ is a match up nightmare without a rim protector. KAT will be in foul trouble against Embiid the entire series too.
I just don’t see a world were Brunson uses Lebron same as he used Harden and Shamet makes 11 out of 12 threes.

Embiid is never healthy and to many players who want to chuck . Will anybody outside of LeBron be willing to play their role..
Whispers out of LA were that LeBron chafed a bit at having been relegated to the role of Luka’s sidekick. I know he’s all about “sacrifice for the greater good” now but one wonders how that monumental ego will handle being the third/fourth option behind Maxey, Brown, and Embiid once the season starts.
Maybe the LA situation was different. LeBron had been the Alpha Dog on that Lakers team for so long that taking a back seat to even a Top 3 player like Luka must’ve been painful for him. Now he’s inserting himself onto someone else’s team and is at least publicly acknowledging that he is there in a supporting role. But all those weeks worth of self created drama surrounding Decision IV appear to be the actions of someone who still views himself as a Difference Maker, not just some 4th option sidekick. I foresee that Sixers team struggling with serious ego issues as long as the pecking order remains in flux. Managing egos at that level is a highly specialized skill for a head coach, one that I’m not sure Nick Nurse possesses.

I think Lebron is way more desperate to build his GOAT case than people expected. He figures going back to Miami or Cleveland doesn’t guarantee him a ring and he already won with them, so he’s trying to bring one to a franchise who’s been shit for 40 years to get fictional GOAT points over Jordan.
Like most people here I’m not scared, Embiid is just done and I don’t rate Brown very highly, I just don’t see how this Philly team is significantly better than playing with Doncic in Los Angeles, who’s a far better player than anyone Philly has.

He knows that and that’s his role for any Lebron team to win it all at age 41. He agreed to do it for Luka but not Reeves. Hes too smart to buy into Luka and reeves championship level backcourt. The minute Reeves got paid, LeBron announced his exit. He’s obviously willing to do it for Maxey and Brown.
Both Embiid and Lebron won’t initiate offense as much but will stretch the floor, defend, rebound and attack the paint after receiving the ball with the defense scrambling. However, if they’re needed in a playoff game or especially NBA finals to be dominant, they can easily do it.
Lebron knows that in the finals he has an ~90% chance of matching up with either Tobias Harris or Chet Holmgreen and that’s ~33% chance of another ring and a finals MVP for him.
That’s why I always said that he’s only going to Philly because he will always decide to do what’s best for his legacy and brand, – not what’s easiest, coolest or more sentimental.
It’s a weird fit for a few reasons. There’s only one ball, and Philly has plenty of guys they could rely on for efficient offense. It’s better to have more good players than fewer, and LeBron still brings some playmaking and connectivity to an offensive team, but they already had tons of offense.
The defensive end is where they have a potential problem. LeBron is a high IQ defensive player, but Philly was hapless against us on defense last year and a 42 year old LeBron is no longer a quality on ball defender.
Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe are their two best defenders in the starting lineup. That doesn’t seem good enough.

Nurse is going to have his hands full. I think they’re better playing 4 out of the 5 starters. Embiid will miss 40 games anyway and they can rotate their guys during the regular season easily. But in the playoffs I don’t know where the extra gear is going to come from.

The discussion here is largely focused on the basketball fit but I continue to believe that making all those egos work together will be just as big an issue for the Sixers, if not the biggest.
Only last month, shortly before he was traded, Windhorst (yeah, yeah I know) reported that Jaylen Brown wanted to go somewhere he could lead his own team.
One month later, Brown finds himself on a team that already had Maxey and Embiid in house and now just added LeBron. Not exactly the optimal situation for “leading his own team.”
So how’s that going to work itself out, exactly? Even in the best case scenario in which Brown gives up on his Alpha Dog dreams, LeBron embraces his co-starring role, and Maxey/Embiid tweak their games to accommodate the newcomers, there’s still going to be a lengthy adjustment process. It took the Heatles a full season to sort out how all their pieces fit together. Only in this instance, one of the pieces has Swiss cheese for knees and the other is nearly 42 years old. Time is not exactly on their side.
All of the discussions about basketball fit are premised on a best case scenario in which all involved check their egos at the door. If that doesn’t happen – and there winds up being friction over minutes, touches, and role – things in Philly could spiral out of control very quickly.

They will 100% have at least two defining moments where they struggle and need player only meetings to square shit…these are the situations that reveal contenders vs pretenders. We had them last year.

I’m less convinced the personal stuff is going to be as much of an issue as their ability to play effective half court defense.
Can you play elite defense with Embiid, 42 year old LeBron, and Maxey all on the floor? Jaylen Brown is your OG Anunoby style defensive stopper and 6’4” VJ Edgecombe is your second best defender.
Nick Nurse, the coach, is overrated and not a great defensive coach. I just don’t see how they play enough defense. Embiid is a poor defender at this stage of his career given his current physical limitations. He’s a liability in transition defense, doesn’t guard the pick and roll well anymore, and doesn’t do much on defense other than get an occasional swat at the rim.
I don’t think Clarkson and especially Josh Hart get enough love for the trasformation of their game to come together and add the value needed at the specific point in time.
Hart turned himself into a sniper from three especially in difficult end of shot clock situations and 4th quarters. JC realized that he needs to defend & offensive rebound so he tought himself how to do that at an elite level. Have to admit, I didnt know he had that in him. Kudos.
Real problem. They might have to play Bona or Huk more than they realize. Not sure what the answer is but its not the hardest problem in the world to solve.

Huk will be fine if he doesn’t need to do anything on offense. And he’s probably not gonna need to do anything on offense.
Philly was 23rd in 3pt% last season and aren’t getting better 3pt shooting adding Brown and LeBron.

It seems that PHI is a fine place to go to not work too hard to still make the playoffs, then try hard come April. But LA was a good place to do that too, so who really knows what he’s thinking. Maybe he just really wants to play for the greatest fans in the world.
Perfect path for repeating: we beat Philly, Indy and Miami in the east before beating OKC in the finals. That way we can say we’ve beaten all of our foes and rivals (including Boston in 2025) and beaten both of the best teams out west.
I gotta say they’re really going to have to stagger that starting five because outside of Simon they have ZERO firepower on the bench.
It’s one of the things I like about our bench, what with No-Trade Deuce, Shamet, even Clarkson and Alvarado. Heck, even Kolek and Diawara, unless Mo actually did spend all summer smoking spliffs, as per his summer league play…

I’m glad he didn’t go to the Heat. They have a great coach who’d be better able to hide his defensive weaknesses, and better defensive players surrounding him. The 76ers look good at a glance when you see all the big names but I’m not really convinced about fit. Defensively they’ll be suspect and they have plenty of shot creation but not a lot of guys who can create the spacing for it.

I like aspects of the fit for LeBron. He’s got three very dynamic players to defer the heavy lifting to in Maxey, Brown, and Edgecombe. I can imagine Wade, Simons, and Barlow being a pretty good bench combo. Maybe one (or both) of Huk and Bona develops a bit.
Obviously the big question mark is Embiid. Perhaps LeBron thinks that the team will be good enough to win some early round games with Embiid not playing in all the games. They aren’t gonna stretch the floor but that’s a lot of firepower running at the rim. Maybe they trade someone like Simons for a shooter.
I think it just came down to Klutch guys trusting each other. LeBron’s known Maxey a long time. Nurse is a Klutch client, too.

Someone commented on social media that he was irked at how badly the Grizzlies fumbled their last contending team, and yet somehow ended up in a decent place, and I was shocked by how DECENT their rotation really is for a very young team.
