SNY: Knicks expected to re-sign Mohamed Diawara to multiyear deal

From Colin Martin:

The Knicks and restricted free agent Mohamed Diawara are working on a multiyear, eight-figure deal to bring the rookie back to New York, SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley confirms.

The deal is not official, but all signs are pointing to it getting done, Begley notes.

Big move. This really came down to him wanting to stay, so good for him.

Very happy to have Mo back. Can the Knicks actually develop Mo into being a significant contributor? That’s the last hurdle for this franchise – player development. We send the Rod Stricklands, and Shumps out into the world and our Sweetneys and Triers slide into a back room and disappear.

The bucks are gonna troll everyone and not trade Giannis before the draft, aren’t they?

Damn Randle coming back to NYC to play for The Nets. That seems like cruel and unusual punishment.

Nets should hire Thibs to be their coach. I’m only half joking.

oh yeah baby, give me more mo next season…

maybe maxi kleber isn’t the right answer for a backup power forward – is there someone in this draft that could possibly help us next season and most importantly the post season playing the four…

although, some how josh hart seems to also work…

gotta imagine jose alvarado has made it pretty clear to any and all listening – he wants to stay…hometown hero is a sweet sound…

having such a small backcourt seems to go against reason, but it can work…heart over height…

Power Forwards-

Zuby maybe – I think he’s more of a 4 than a 5. Is the jumpshot good enough..

Joshua Jefferson is another option . Can do a little bit of everything

I like Josh Jefferson and Graves. Probably more that they’re my type of players than that they’ll be amazing.

Jalen Williams went to Santa Clara like Graves did. So don’t let them sell you too hard on the mid-major downside.

Emmanuel Sharp seems like a good 3&D small guard replacement.

Graves is another one although of the 3 he is most likely to be off the board I think.

I like Mo as a long-term project, but taking the vet min isn’t as surprising as it is for most of this board. He can’t score at all, I think his defense gets overrated, and he doesn’t have a star level ceiling. But as long as he’s the size he is and has PG-level passing instincts, he’s worth holding onto.

Eh I think when Mo, Bridges and OG are on the floor the team has a very mobile and lengthy lineup that could be suffocating on defense.

Starting lineup – limited minutes

Plus 8 net rating with Diawara in place of Hart

Plus 22 net rating if you swap in Jose for Brunson

Big move by Leon here. Kid has real potential at just 21 years of age. He is our future Landry replacement.

Minnesota must really want to stay under the lux tax. Trading Randle lets them re-sign Ayo without worrying about it. Still, Ayo & Bones is a questionable PG pair if they don’t go for anyone else.

They also have Joan Beringer, who was drafted 17th last year with a pick they got from the Knicks trade, to play as the 3rd big. He flashed some stuff last year and might be part of moving on from Randle.

Just curious: while I doubt we signed Mo to this deal to immediately turn around and trade him, could we in fact do that if we wanted to?

Off the top of my head, I don’t think so. But since it’s not finalized, we could pivot to a S&T.

Bill Simmons lol

And Jaylen isn’t going to want to play for Boston anymore

For whomever was asking:

1yr = Non-Bird Rights
2yrs = Early Bird Rights
3+ yrs = Bird Rights

From Hoops Rumors:

Teams are eligible to sign their own free agents using the Non-Bird exception for a salary starting at 120% of the player’s previous salary, 120% of the minimum salary, or the amount of a qualifying offer (if the player is a restricted free agent), whichever is greatest. Contracts can be for up to four years, with 5% annual raises.

The cap hold for a Non-Bird player is 120% of his previous salary, unless the previous salary was the minimum. In that case, the cap hold is equivalent to the two-year veteran’s minimum salary. If a Non-Bird free agent only has one year of NBA experience, his cap hold is equivalent to the one-year veteran’s minimum salary.

Basically, it’s a small raise for any player who was signed for a single season. So Diawara should have got the 2yr vet minimum.

We have the same rights for Clarkson.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder.

So a starting 5 of Giannis, Norm, Wiggins, Portis, and Bam with a bench of Mitchell, Larson, Fontecchio, Jovic, and a vet min big? Thats pretty mid.

They also have Davion Mitchell and Wiggins, who is sure to opt in.

It’s a pretty deep, well-rounded team. Bam & Giannis could have some spacing issues but Bam can hit the midrange jumpers at least.

Giannis is such a huge injection of offense talent, that their offense should be very good. Miami was 13th in offense last year and Herro only played 33 games.

Giannis, Norm, and Bam is a strong 1-3.

Wiggins, Portis, and (assuming he’s back) Fontecchio are also around 20% usage and average or better efficiency.

I’d think they might have some spacing problems. Pack the paint and let them try to beat you with Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins.

They should be good but I far prefer this over Giannis to Boston.

2

If Giannis plays >50 games, they’ll be a force. Anything less, not sure his addition moves the needle much.

Boston breaking up their core because they need to compete with us is delicious.

Boston breaking up their core and not even getting Giannis for it? Delightfully delicious.

3

Why do you throw in Portis and not Kuzma..

Because Giannis needs 5 and out lineup surrounding him to maximize his offensive potential and getting a stretch 5 is the hardest part of that equation. Portis can fit that role.

From Charania via Reddit:

[Charania] Antetokounmpo pushed for a trade, with his reps making it clear that the New York Knicks were his preferred destination. The Bucks and Knicks briefly engaged in discussions last summer, but New York never believed Milwaukee seriously considered trading its superstar.

till, Antetokounmpo pushed for a trade, with his reps making it clear that the New York Knicks were his preferred destination. The Bucks and Knicks briefly engaged in discussions last summer, but New York never believed Milwaukee seriously considered trading its superstar. The Bucks, on the other hand, believed the Knicks’ offers were never serious enough.

Antetokounmpo began the season pledging his loyalty to the Bucks, while also acknowledging that “if in six, seven months I change my mind, I think that’s human, too.”

Because Giannis needs 5 and out lineup surrounding him to maximize his offensive potential and getting a stretch 5 is the hardest part of that equation. Portis can fit that role

I’m taking from the Bucks point of view. They’re giving up the best player here. The Bucks should make Miami take on Kuzma and keep Portis.

The Knicks just keep on winning! That Miami team isn’t going to do shit AND it’s old and getting older every day.

The Celtics with Giannis in the middle would have been a problem. Not this Heat team. Awesome news for the Knicks.

I don’t disagree that this isn’t some huge pay cut, but that he took it before exploring the market really does suggest that he wants to be here specifically.

Giannis to Bos would be definitely the worst but I’d prefer Giannis staying to Mil tbh
Giannis to the Heat can be tricky
Riley ain’t a rookie
He can turn his shit up within a few moves

Damn Randle coming back to NYC to play for The Nets. That seems like cruel and unusual punishment.

These were all the same thoughts I had upon waking & seeing the news. Poor Julius. What a horrible fate.

1

Minnesota is the poster child for how staying under the apron is the real suicide. They traded KAT, let NAW walk for nothing, and now salary dumped Randle, too. And all they have to show for all that is the “flexibility” to extend Ayo Dosunmu.

2

“So a starting 5 of Giannis, Norm, Wiggins, Portis, and Bam with a bench of Mitchell, Larson, Fontecchio, Jovic, and a vet min big? Thats pretty mid.”

Also supremely doubtful that Gianni’s meets the 65-game criteria for any kind of award. I envision him playing between 55-60 games. This is not the Gianni’s of 3 or 4 years ago.

The wolves had Gobert Randle and Edwards though. Expensive trio.

I don’t know how I feel about Diawara. He ran hot then cooled. He’s long and reasonably athletic but I don’t know if you can project a superstar defender.

The price is right though and I am cautiously optimistic he can end up a valuable rotation piece in time.

Overall, I feel ok unburdening myself of anxiety. This front office has earned my trust. And hey, we won. Still feels crazy to say.

2

They had Edwards, KAT, Gobert, McDaniels, NAW, and Reid. If they had spent two years in the apron with that team instead of breaking it up to get under it, they probably would have won a chip in one of those years, and we probably wouldn’t have.

If Mike Brown continues his regular season philosophy then Kolek, Mo, Deuce and Huk will get a ton of playing time. Keeping the starting core fresh is not a luxury- it’s a necessity. Mitch cannot be replaced by a draft piece. Mitch gets that must-have rebound, extends out defensively to disrupt a Wemby and is still a lob threat. Tarris Reed, Jr. is the contingency plan if the Knicks lose their nerve and overthink Mitch’s mental health issues and overall fragility.

That’s a pretty trash package for Giannis, but glad he didn’t go to Boston.

There will be some awkward conversations on that team.

Think they have to trade Brown now – hard to come back from that.
