We all know Josh Hart is hilarious, but here’s another gem. šŸ˜€

On the trade of former Villanova teammate Donte DiVincenzo:

ā€œItā€™s just, I think that was like the first time that it hit me like, ā€˜Damn, [Donteā€™s] gone.ā€™

ā€œ[Playing together] was something that we were really looking forward to, and unfortunately we werenā€™t able to do it.

ā€œI feel like we should blame Isaiah Hartenstein. I feel like itā€™s all his fault, so, thank you ā€˜Zay.ā€™ Appreciate it.ā€

(from the Posting and Toasting article above, but there’s more Hart quotes there and also quotes from Thibs, Kolek, Mikal and KAT)

Max, i don’t think Rokas will ever play for the Knicks, but thanks for the update.

Even with Julius out I’m really curious about tonight game.

Bridges and OG have a chance to show their mettle against Ant (and DDV) and how will the Wolves defend on KAT? Would Reid follow him or would they dare him to shoot wide open leaving Gobert to protect the rim?

    And don’t forget:
    Ty-Ler Ko-Lek
    dum-dum dum-dum-dum
    Ty-Ler Ko-Lek
    dum-dum dum-dum-dum

Max, it’s just me and you today, but i’m off to go hiking the mountains. Sorry to not keep you company. šŸ¤ šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜€

I have a feeling Donte is going to go off tonight.

Honestly, how does this get a rise out of anyone? Who cares in an exhibition game?

Should he torch us in the NBA finals, then I’ll give a whatever….

I’m just interested in everyone coming out of the game healthy and getting time playing together, fiddling with rotations while simulating regular season conditions.

Honestly, how does this get a rise out of anyone? Who cares in an exhibition game?

A prediction doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m upset, Bob. Just speculating.

A prediction doesnā€™t mean Iā€™m upset, Bob. Just speculating.

Fair enough… I was just wondering why.

I was completely agnostic when Leon was given the reigns and Thibs was named coach. Thibs had a substantial record of winning around the league playing a 1950’s style of hoops. Leon seemed to be an odd choice.

As it has turned out Thibs has embraced the modern offense. Leon has reworked the roster to the point where the Vegas oddsmakers but them 3rd in the league.

Leon took a player he signed last year for 11 million and a player that no one thought was better than a value neutral contract coming off major surgery and swapped them out for the quintessential stretch modern big.

The knicks have a high-powered modern offense, two plus, plus defensive starting wings and a plus defensive back up center (when he’s healthy). They have maneuvered themselves into a pretty great spot, pretty quickly.

It cost them a player no one wanted to lose, but so be it.

What happens in preseason games does matter a bit. Guys like Kolek, if they come in and tear it up in preseason, generally tend to back that up the rest of the season. Small samples sizes are a thing but small samples in basketball can still be surprisingly sticky.

Summer league and the preseason does matter.

It was sometime between draft day and opening day where we find the bums and the gems from the draft. I remember that it’s during that time where I noticed the potential of later draft picks like IQ and Mitch. It’s also where I realized that picks like Ntilikina, Knox and Toppin were not going to work out.

I look at this current iteration and already Kolek and Hukporti stand out. As optimistic as I am about them, I’m wondering about Dadiet and McCullar.

I look at this current iteration and already Kolek and Hukporti stand out. As optimistic as I am about them, Iā€™m wondering about Dadiet and McCullar.

I love the fact that we not only built a team of young peaking veterans that should give us a good run for our money for the next few years, we also replenished our bench with some young players. Hopefully a few will develop and start peaking right around the time we need that younger blood, especially since we don’t have a lot of 1st round picks. This is exactly what I wanted us to do. #SolidHybridRebuild

    Iā€™m wondering about Dadiet

That last Katz article made it pretty clear that we drafted Dadiet bc he was the only prospect willing to sign for 80% of his salary slot.

Dadiet seemed like an odd pick to me, given that he is very young and very raw, and seemingly not on our timeline. So ā€œhe was the only guy willing to take the 80%ā€ makes a lot of sense to me. They got the guy I really wanted (Kolek) in the second round anyway, and it seems pretty obvious at this point that Kolek is a first round talent, so it all worked out.

The Mets left Adam Ottavino (who stinks) off the NLCS roster so they could keep Luisangel Acuna, which is a move that I like. The odds of Acuna helping as an 80 speed pinch runner seem a lot higher than the odds of Ottavino helping as a low-leverage relief pitcher. Jeff McNeil was added to the roster also.

Hard to judge McCullar since he hasn’t actually stepped on a court since the draft and has never played against pros in a viewable game.

I’m skeptical about Dadiet but that’s not something we need to worry about till his contract ends and we need to re-sign him.

It is only odd in the context that most were looking for that pick to be used on a plug and play player (that could contribute) or to be kicked down the road.

They have a bunch of guys on the roster who are win now (26-30, in their primes) and other than back up point, there isn’t room for much.

They must really like his size, athleticism and shooting (for an 18 year old) and are willing to take 2-3 years before he might be useful. It can’t hurt practicing with OG and Bridges every day to learn defense.

It’s hard to argue with anything the front office has done, but they could probably use Kyshawn George more than Dadiet since we are in “win now” mode. I’m really hoping TJ Warren makes it. I think we could use one more scorer off the bench.

Warren and Shamet canā€™t both make it for apron reasons. And Shamet seems to have his spot locked up.

Itā€™s hard to argue with anything the front office has done

    Anything?

    I can think of a few šŸ™‚

    @TheSteinLine
The Sixers announced today that Joel Embiid (left knee injury management) is out for the entire preseason in hopes that Embiid can be fully available on Opening Night against Milwaukee on Oct. 23.

but they could probably use Kyshawn George more than Dadiet

george has definitely had some moments. plays to his own metronome.

the guy who has really stood out to me is ryan dunn. his defense is as advertised. maybe better. but the the shot suddenly looks like it has a fighting chance. it already looks way better than roberson or thybulle after years of nba coaching. he’s not a creator but if the shot gets to halfway decent he’s still a monster.

suns also have ighodaro who also looks like he might develop into a rotation player. for a minute it looked like we would keep the marquette band together, but i’m not gonna complain about a draft where we got tyler kolek in round two.

Something to keep in mind considering everyoneā€™s using ā€œvegas has us 3rd in the preseasonā€ as a stand in for something meaningful:

Last year Vegas had Phoenix 3rd in the preseason after they traded for Bradley Beal.

Eventually Phoenix was displaced by Milwaukee at 3rd after they traded for Lillard.

Letā€™s remember the wolf in pulp fiction here.

Unless they took a paycut, I don’t think we’d have gone for it. It would have created a bigger headache trying to get under the 2nd apron. Pretty sure we wanted to trade down or out and nobody cared about this draft enough to move up.

Unless they put a “Not to win” line for the title, it’s a pretty meaningless stat. Sure feels good though.

Fair point, but if I’m looking for an objective measure, people making what they consider a fair line is better than most.

Pretty sure we wanted to trade down or out and nobody cared about this draft enough to move up.

Denver traded up to 22, Washington traded up 2 spots to 24 and OKC a team with a bazillion picks traded up into 26 all in our neighborhood.

There is no evidence they couldn’t find a taker for 25 since many of the picks in that neighborhood did move. That leads me to believe (rightly or wrongly) they have a good opinion of Dadiet’s future and are willing to wait.

It is pretty clear they had a strategy to fit KAT in and drafting Dadiet at 25 (at a discount) worked if they could trade out of the first round with 24.

So far it’s the OG vs. Donte game.

But I like DDV’s new hirsute look.

We got fleeced on that bridges dealā€¦

It was a clear overpay from the day it happened. I had his value at about 3 first so they paid the city tax of 2 extra 1st. I’m never comfortable giving up that many picks for a 0 time all star .

Engles will play until he’s like 50…my 45 and over league starts tomorrow…half our roster looks like him..

This game is giving me so many wild hot takes I feel like I’m going through menopause.

Hart has zero shots in 16 minutes, playing 4 vs 5 on offense doesnā€™t sounds like a great idea to meā€¦

The bench unit was brutal, give me Kolek!

OG has learned the lesson, if Brunson gives you the ball try to shoot and never give it backā€¦ šŸ˜€

I think Jerry is waiting on Deion Sanders. His son leaves to the NFL next year.

Thibs in midseason form and itā€™s mid October

    LOL

There’s no preseason for Thibs, only games we must win at all costs. šŸ˜€

Cam Payne is kind of an annoying dude, but heā€™s our annoying dude so itā€™s all good

Hart is the 5th option. So we canā€™t expect much scoring, but he has to do something. If heā€™s not going to score, he has to hit the boards and make plays.

Hart is the 5th option. So we canā€™t expect much scoring, but he has to do something.

Harts skill set fits better off the bench where he can be free to play his game.

Whoever told Deuce heā€™s a major scoring option needs to have another talk with him.

Harts skill fits better off the bench where he can be free to play his game.

We need his rebounding and playmaking in the starting lineup. I donā€™t care if he scores 5 points starting or 10 points off the bench, but he has to get rebounds and make plays with the starting unit because our potential weakness in that lineup is rebounding and thatā€™s his strength.

Whoever told Deuce heā€™s a major scoring option needs to have another talk with him.

He’s on the 2nd unit, who should be the scorer if not Deuce?

The bench needs scoring. Looking at this game Iā€™m thinking Bridges will start but spend some time playing with Deuce and the second unit. This will help second unit scoring. Also, Precious is getting minutes, but heā€™s playing the four (not center) with Sims at the center.

it’s very hard to tell how hart fits in the starting lineup bc they have no idea what they’re doing yet. nobody knows where to go when the initial action is stymied (unless they are just stapled to the corner). og and mikal are getting some random isos and side pnrs in these cases but mostly they are all running around like npcs around jalen and kat. that kind of situations isn’t going to work for a guy like hart. it’ll be a minute before we can tell how he actually works with the starters.

Who was DiVincenzo barking at? (*) Kinda weird.

(*) “This is what happens when they let you run the show.” Then repeated.

Sadly, Iā€™m losing hope in Sims.

Let’s check if Boston accepts a swap of Sims for Queta. ā˜ŗļø

    Whereā€™s Kolek?

Looks like he’s not going to play, but i don’t know why. It’d be good to keep getting more data on him.

Apparently Donte was talking to Thibs!

ā€œThank you for the trade, thank you for the trade, Thibs. Thatā€™s what happens when they let you run the show.ā€

Did anyone see Rick Brunson and Devo having to be separated after the game?

    Really bizarre

itā€™s very hard to tell how hart fits in the starting lineup bc they have no idea what theyā€™re doing yet. nobody knows where to go when the initial action is stymied (unless they are just stapled to the corner). og and mikal are getting some random isos and side pnrs in these cases but mostly they are all running around like npcs around jalen and kat. that kind of situations isnā€™t going to work for a guy like hart. itā€™ll be a minute before we can tell how he actually works with the starters.

Heā€™s 5th option on a team with 4 very efficient options ahead of him. No matter how well they are playing together, heā€™s the Frank in this lineup. All we need from him as a scorer is to take a wide open 3 if they give it to him and maybe an occasional defensive rebound he takes coast to coast. The only reason for him start is to make up the rebounding and playmaking gap going from I-Hart and Randle to Towns and OG. He should be able to that much now even if the offense is in disarray. If thatā€™s not working, then maybe we need to make another move for a PF and shift OG and Bridges down. Iā€™m not worried about it yet, but that the only reason for him to start. I said during game one heā€™s probably only going to average 5-8 points per game with that much efficient usage ahead of him.

Assuming this lip reading is true is Donte suggesting that Thibs was behind the trade for KAT? Oh wow. For Donte to say that means there is some animosity among the Nova Knicks towards the coach for the trade.

Did anyone see Rick Brunson and Devo having to be separated after the game?

    Really bizarre

    Lol what

Did anyone see Rick Brunson and Devo having to be separated after the game?

Jesus, Donte looked to settle some scores tonight if this is all true.

Where does Jalen fit into all of this?

Apparently Rick Brunson thought DDV was yelling at him during the game and DDV was telling him after the game he was yelling at Thibs.

Heā€™s on the 2nd unit, who should be the scorer if not Deuce?

Iā€™ve been saying we need another scorer on the bench. During the regular season I guess Thibs plans to use one of the starters in the 2nd unit (not my ideal). Deuce should be more of a 3d option on the bench with a real backup PG like Kolek controlling the ball instead of him or Payne (who is more of a scorer than real PG also). If you canā€™t tell, I love what Iā€™ve seen from Kolek. IMO he probably belongs in the rotation now and itā€™s borderline insane to not be giving him minutes in preseason.

I have a feeling Donte is going to go off tonight.

You were right, but not quite in the way you anticipated.

    Btwā€¦towns rebounding ability looks superb

He rebounding was down the last couple of years because he was playing next to Gobert, but we still have to try to make up the gap going from Randle to OG at PF. I love OG, but rebounding is not one of his strengths.

Meanwhile the Senga from the Phillies series looks like fools gold. Couldnā€™t find the release point at all in there. He was struggling to find it against the Phillies too but luckily they just swing at everything.

Iā€™ll be so bummed if Donte is genuinely mad about how things went down. The vibes!

Iā€™m not giving up on Sims. He had seven rebounds in 13 minutes. Thatā€™s tied with Towns for the best rebound rate on the team. He did foul too much of course, but Iā€™m wondering if matching up with Minnesotaā€™s big front line had something to do with that.

Well, we knew that Randle and DDV probably did not like being traded from NY to Minnesota no matter what they say publicly. But I thought Hartā€™s joke blaming it all on I-Hart was also a bit telling. You donā€™t ā€œblameā€ someone like that, even in jest, if everybody is happy with the trade. What we donā€™t know is how Brunson, Bridges and Hart feel about it and whether it will impact the locker room if they all think Thibs was behind it and it wasnā€™t popular in the locker room.

I love the fire from Donte.

HukTuah and Kolek really should be able to take those Payne/Sims minutes this year. I hope itā€™s sooner rather than later.

I think Hart should close games with the Big 4 but I’ve said all along I think starting someone like Shamet wouldn’t be a bad move and might help the lineup rotations.

Yeah, because Thibs was so enamored with KAT the first time around. I’m sure he was *salivating* to get him back.

    /biggest eyeroll ever.

You were right, but not quite in the way you anticipated.

    Ha!

Weird night. Are we sure that wasnā€™t Malachi Flynn yelling at Thibs?

Yeah, Iā€™ve more or less given up on Sims. I liked some of what I saw early on in his career, but he hasnā€™t made any progress. Even Mitch got noticeably better in some areas despite all the injuries holding back his progress.

I hope Thibs keeps giving Huk minutes. Iā€™ll be disappointed if he doesnā€™t move past Sims on the depth chart sometime early this season.

Glad they busted up the Nova bullshit.

Yeah, shit like this from Donte makes me happy they broke the Nova Knicks thing up before it became a monster. Gives me a feeling of the inmates wanting to run the asylum.

I’m also glad that Coach Brunson got in Donte’s face and told him to cut out the salty fingerpointing. I hope it will send the message to Jalen, and by extension the rest of the locker room, about moving on from this fixating about Nova Knicks bullshit and getting on with the business of putting together the best championship team we can muster.

    Pretty douchey.

Nice to have known you, unprofessional jackass DDV!

DDV is acting like a jilted lover.

snowflakes are in the mirror fellas. “it’s a business” doesn’t require you to be a fucking robot. donte caring out loud beats the fuck out of stepford wife decorum. he didn’t swing at anyone. and if you know anything about rick you know he’s never stfu once in his life.

I think Hart should close games with the Big 4 but Iā€™ve said all along I think starting someone like Shamet wouldnā€™t be a bad move and might help the lineup rotations.

Heā€™d make an extra wide open 3 here or there and occasionally create something off the dribble that we donā€™t get from Hart. You can always use more offensive talent on the court, but those are not areas of need for the Knicks starters. When all is said and done, OG and Bridges may not be fully utilized with Brunson and Towns ahead of them. IMO we want someone out there that does things those 4 do not do well. Shamet doesnā€™t rebound, make plays, hustle, defend or have the switching ability of Hart. I think itā€™s more important to protect Towns/Brunson on defense and get extra rebounds than hitting an extra wide open 3 here or there.

I hope Thibs at least tries Precious or Deuce with the starters to see how that looks, but itā€™s good to finally have these first-world nba problems.

Don’t know why Donte was popping off–clearly something we’re not privy to. Hopefully it has left with him and/or Randle! Also, I think it’s fine–talk your shit if you want, it’s basketball. He’s not airing any dirty laundry per se.

In any case, I’m happy with the new look of the team. They look thoroughly modernized in a way that’s lovely to watch.

ESPN feed has him leading it off by yelling ā€œThanks for the trade, Thibs. Thanks for the trade.ā€

I’m sure this is going to enamor him with the folks in Minneapolis….

Iā€™m sure this is going to enamor him with the folks in Minneapolisā€¦.

They are actually impressed believe it or not. They see him as being a shit-talker with a chip on his shoulder like ANT who will stir up the pot.

I think they don’t care that he’s salty about the trade because they already operate on the implicitly understood premise that most NBA players prefer to live in NYC than Minneapolis.

    @StevePopper
Donte said he wasnā€™t talking about the trade – joking with Thibs about his finish on the drive. Then when a reply came it escalated. He said the postgame part will be addressed privately.

Rick Brunson is, to put it most kindly, an ass. But still. I don’t like there being two Evil Dontes in the league at once.

ESPN feed has him leading it off by yelling right at Thibs, ā€œThanks for the trade, Thibs. Thanks for the trade.ā€

    See ya.

Honestly the most noteworthy part of that highlight was that he went right at KAT like he was nothing and got the 3 point play.

I hope KAT finds that 7.8 BPM form again, and quickly. I donā€™t think the Gardenā€™s gonna love him if he gets off to a slow start.

Honestly the most noteworthy part of that highlight was that he went right at KAT like he was nothing and got the 3 point play.

Eye of the beholder and all, but it looked more from here like a weirdo getting all lathered up about an exhibition game.

Winning cures all ills. If the team gets off to a hot start, he’ll be insulated from too much criticism. I am worried about the playoffs where his performance will be microscrutinized.

I had a feeling the Mets would come out flatter than a Dodgers team that streaked 2 big time wins against San Diego. I am hoping for a split in LA.

Watching Daniel Jones play QB makes me appreciate the Yankees and Knicks alot more.

didn’t watch the game…cuz, it’s the pre-season, and i’m feeling a bit donnie-ish regarding any sports team commitments…looking at the boxscore and shot distribution:

what in the hell is josh hart doing out there…it’s like he’s purposefully staying out of KAT/mikal/OG’s way…good for him, there will come a time this season when we’ll need to rely on his energy and offense and rebounding…he’s been a good defender for us since he arrived…

someone said it the other day, but yeah – if thibs could play mikal 48.5 minutes a game he most certainly would…hard to blame him, mikal is soooo elite as a point of attack defender, and then you have him in tandem with OG who just wrecks passing lanes and smothers people…

donte was just joking…jalen’s dad is a bit of a ‘fire-ready-aim’ kind of guy…no harm no foul…

    More detailed DDV quote:

    @SbondyNBA
As far as clip circulating of Donte at foul line, DiVincenzo said he was joking with Thibs about not being able to finish. Donte said he never said, “Thanks for trade.” The stuff with Rick Brunson wasn’t joking, however, including when he looked at Knicks bench (not at Thibs) and said, “This is what happens when they let you run the show.”

“My relationship with Jalen ā€“ thatā€™s my brother, my best friend,” DiVincenzo said. “Thatā€™s a separate relationship. I said Iā€™ll talk about that privately (with Rick) and figure that out.”

So, yeah, sounds like his only real beef is with the elder Brunson, which… I can’t really blame him for that.

    ETA:

    @FredKatz
For whatā€™s itā€™s worth, Donte DiVincenzo has always been one of the most outspoken supporters of Tom Thibodeau. He has raved in just about every context of Thibs and what Thibs did for his growth whenever given the chance.

daniel jones should be running the ball a lot more…option offense all the way šŸ™‚

daboll looks like he’s slimmed down a bunch, good for him…i like that warmup jacket he’s wearing, hat’s pretty nice too…

How the hell does MLB schedule the Mets-Dodgers for 4 pm tomorrow and Yanks-Guardians for 7:30 pm? Shouldnā€™t it be the other way around given the Mets and Dodgers are playing a game tonight?

When one playoff series has a travel day next that series will usually plays in the earlier time slot.

The DDV thing is silly, imho hardly even worth discussing. We won’t see him again until December 19 in Minny, and January 17 at MSG. And not in the playoffs ever unless and until both teams reach the finals.

Daniel Jones has more yards per rush for his own running (5.3) than he has yards per pass (4.7). He just canā€™t make long passes.

Had no faith whatsoever that Jones would finish that drive. Times like this I really miss Eli…

How the hell does MLB schedule the Mets-Dodgers for 4 pm tomorrow

California doesnā€™t recognize Columbus Day, so itā€™s a 1pm game on a weekday. Huh?

    Very interesting game tonight.

Hart 0-0 from the floor. It’s almost like he deferred to let everyone else score. Team does need to gel offensively.
Thibs is playing the starters bug minutes already. Claims he loves the bench. Payne was -10. Deuce and Shamet were an awful combined 7-22 from 3 but they were a combined +22. Imagine if they were hitting their shots!
    DDV vs Brunson Sr

I agree itā€™s an odd box score. I think I saw Hart being the main defender for Ant. I can see that might affect his energy for scoring. And Ant scored a lot anyway, but Hart still had a good plus minus, which I donā€™t understand.

Deuce and Shamet got to the foul line and it helped them. Combined they scored 25 points on 22 shots, which isnā€™t horrible.
