In a surprising turn of events with less than two weeks to go until training camps open around the NBA, 21-year-old Houston Rockets forward A.J. Griffin is stepping away from basketball. He will subsequently be waived by the franchise via contract buyout, giving up a significant portion of the $3.9 million he was owed for the upcoming 2024-25 season, per a team source.

Earlier this month, The Athletic reported on Griffin seriously considering retirement, citing undisclosed personal and family-related reasons. Griffin, who played two seasons in Atlanta after the Hawks drafted him No. 16 in 2022, was traded to Houston in June in hopes of a kickstart to his young career. Griffin played five games for the Rockets in Vegas’ July summer league, averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 rebounds.

    Wow, did not expect that.

I know he had some pretty big family issues last year and I assume his retirement is tied to that. Hope things go well for him.

Also didn’t realise his father was the Bucks coach who got fired for Doc.

    What a difference a year makes…

KBA, that’s an amazing line-up. So many of my favorites — Laws, Desmond, DeJohnette. And of course the great Ron Carter. Wandered into a bar in Manhattan after dance class many moons ago and he was part of a trio. Watching his enormously long, tentacle-like fingers work the strings was mesmerizing. I suspect I’ll forget Little Raven’s face in my dotage long before I forget that evening.

And no, no guitar for the lad. Yet. He did get an electric cello for his birthday. Which seems to have made up for the lack of guitar so far.

Raven, yes, indelible image of Ron. And, no doubt, that ensemble is amazing. Desmond is in my heart forever for his performance on “Concierto” with Jim Hall. Melts me every time.

And Electric cello? Amazing! ELO? “Telephone Line”? Haha. Or something way more sophisticated?

JK, thx for the tip. Working through the sneaker album as I type this. Didn’t know it at all. I’m limited in my awareness of Brazilian music to Milton and Jobim (obvs).

Will check out the Hiatt next, Pepper.

    Enjoy the day/s.

PS — re cello, when I was a kid I collected all these classical pieces re-worked as jazz or “rock” music. Deodato, et al. One of them was Paganini’s Theme re-worked by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I think his brother plays cello on it. Prolly tacky for today’s kids (any kids?) but it was fun at the time to play along with.

The Lo Borges album is like a companion piece to the seminal “Clube Da Esquina” album that Lo Borges and Milton Nascimento recorded that same year. So if you’re into that album, you’ll probably like the sneaker album.

JK, thx, didn’t have “Clube Da Esquina” until now. And — re Brazil — I forgot I also got turned on to Caetano Veloso’s “Best of” record after his sublime performance (IMO) in Almodovar’s TALK TO HER. Again, coming to his work late. Haha. Too much good Brazilian music.

PS — prolly know/love Milton best from the Wayne Shorter record “Native Dancer” — just crazy cutting right to the heart with every note.

I’m listening to Big Star and it’s Sunday so…

Idk why we didn’t give Harry Giles a contract (he just signed with Charlotte.) I know he’s had injuries, but he still has a lot of potential at an area of need whereas Shamet will do literally nothing for us.

    Amazing moment! ☺️
