Not sure that anyone yesterday posted the full list of multi season coaches with a better win% then Thibs.

    1. Pat Riley 68%
    2. JVG 59%
    3. Mike Woodson 58%
    4. Joe Lapchick 56.9% Had never heard of him. He’s the Knicks 2nd head coach and coached the team to 3 straight Finals appearances in the 50s
    5. Red Holzman 55.9%

There was also Don Nelson who obviously coached less than 1 season and had 57.6%. And the first coach in franchise history, Neil Cohalan, coached for one full season and retired with a 55% win%.

Thibs was handed a roster that Vegas projected to win a league-worst 23 games and finished with a .569 winning percentage.

Red Holzman took over a team with Willis Reed, Walt Bellamy, Dick Barnett, and rookies Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley.

Pat Riley took over a team with Patrick Ewing, Charles Oakley, John Starks, Anthony Mason, and Mark Jackson

Lapchick coached in an era when the set shot was still in vogue and the Syracuse Nationals and Rochester Royals were powerhouses.

Don Nelson/JVG took over a team that won 55 games the year before and lost in the ECFs.

Mike Woodson took over a playoff team that had Melo, Amare, Chandler, and Linsanity

Folks can rank Thibs wherever they want, but he is already right up there with the greatest coaches in Knicks history…and the fun is just starting!

Speaking of coaching, the Knicks made a stealth hire yesterday, bringing Mark Bryant aboard (it’s in the news feed above.)

“The 59-year-old New Jersey native has long been viewed as one of the best big man coaches in the NBA, which will be key since the Knicks have a lot of questions at that position.”

I saw that, Z-man. Interesting hire, given how much credit Othella Harrington has seemingly gotten for the way iHart and Precious improved under his watch.

Seems like Mark Bryant is in effect replacing Johnnie Bryant, right?

I mostly remember Bryant as a pretty good backup C with the damn good Blazers of the early ’90s.

Seems like Mo Cheeks is the new Johnny Bryant (i.e., Thibs’ second in command), while other guys are more specialized.

On baseball, Aaron Boone’s postgame presser looked like that of an exasperated manager about to be fired. If they lose this series to the Red Sox, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the final straw.

I am super intrigued by the tandem of Harrington and Bryant coaching up the big positions- which perfectly sets up my second thought. That mock trade above is also super intriguing- especially with the work Bryant did with Ayton. I’d do it. We have savvy coaching across the board on Thibs’ staff. WHAT IS LEON TRYING TO DO TO US?? LOL
Nicely fitting & deep roster with 2 way players and shooters, AND a deep coaching staff that looks like they will all work well together? Folks, this might be the first FO that is truly serious about winning that our squad has had in a VERY long time

I am super intrigued by the tandem of Harrington and Bryant

We lost Bryant to the Cavs, who desperately need him to teach Mobley an offensive game away from the basket

On baseball, Aaron Boone’s postgame presser looked like that of an exasperated manager about to be fired. If they lose this series to the Red Sox, I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the final straw.

I was thinking last night’s game is one that gets managers fired. I think the Juan Soto thing complicates things… do they want to make the organization look unstable, or is Boone really the problem?

If you want your kid to get an NBA contract, give him one of these names:
    Jordan Miller
    or
    Scotty Pippen Jr.

Jordan Miller is from just down the road from me. A lot of “Shaq”s play football instead.

Probably not an accident that Junior uses “Scotty” whereas Dad used “Scottie.” I’m guessing it’s an “I’m my own man” thing, much in the same way that Bronny doesn’t go by “LeBron James, Jr.”

think pippen jr. is a legit rotation player. amazing how deep memphis looks after last year.

“think pippen jr. is a legit rotation player. amazing how deep memphis looks after last year.”

Actually more amazing that they looked so thin last year…before the gun stuff with Ja they were a force to be reckoned with. Then they dropped like flies.

We lost Bryant to the Cavs, who desperately need him to teach Mobley an offensive game away from the basket

This is on me. I should have said Mark Bryant.

Miller is of course a treasured Miami alumnus so I watched most of his college games. I think I brought him up a few times here. It seemed so obvious to me he was an NBA player I convinced myself I must’ve been missing something when he was regularly not even on mocks. Lesson learned!

I truly am at a loss about the Yankees. My brain says the highest quality data is still that which comes from the largest sample size, so in this case that would be the whole season up to this point. That means we’re talking about the team with the highest SRS, 2nd best pythag record, 5th best record overall, and 2nd best team wRC+. In other words, calm down, it’s fine, etc.

…but I’m watching these games too, and for the last six weeks or so it’s been an utter slog. The start to the season feels like a distant memory even though there haven’t even been that many disruptive injuries.

Still, with the full-season indicators being what they are, not to mention the uncertainty surrounding Soto, you obviously go for it at the deadline. It just feels like there are, oh, 23 holes to fill or so?

think the Juan Soto thing complicates things… do they want to make the organization look unstable,

Juan Soto is never going to be fooled by this shit show. They should just trade him now before he walks.

Steve Cohen’s pitch to Soto should be very simple: they’ll spend on you, and then use you as an excuse to not spend on anyone else. I will spend on you and keep spending.

The Mets somehow feel like an underdog feelgood story despite having the highest payroll in MLB. They’re paying $55M in dead salary that is coming off the books next year and will have $180M less in committed salary heading into the 2025 season.

They’ll need to fill a lot of holes as Alonso, JD Martinez, Bader, Severino, and Quintana are coming off the books, and it seems possible that Christian Scott will miss the 2025 season with TJS. The top MLB-ready prospects have all missed pretty much the full season due to injuries, and won’t be ready to be contribute until mid-2025 at the earliest.

But they will have LOTS of money to spend, and you have to think they will throw a huge contract at Soto.

This is on me. I should have said Mark Bryant.

Lol, nah that’s on me for skipping over all the posts and headlines saying we hired him

Yeah, Christian Scott’s elbow looks like a problem. He’s never even pitched 100 innings in a season (87 last year, his most) and had to have his elbow rested last year, too. This year he’s at 89 and is having trouble again.

BTW, I think Manaea’s deal is a 2nd year player option? If so, he might not not opt in.

They’ll have a LOT of holes to fill for next year, even with all the extra $$. And, their top AAA guys seem to be stalled (Acuna and Gilbert, esp., and Baty seems like AAAA guy, and all their top starting pitching prospects there are struggling).

If only Baty could figure out MLB pitching, they could move Vientos to 1B or DH and save lots of cash to invest in pitching.

Very curious what moves Stearns will make. If they really think they can make a strong late season run, they need more pitching.

As down as I am on the Yankees right now I will guarantee that Soto will not leave the Yankees to sign with the freaking Mets.

I don’t think you’re down enough on the Yankees then.

If Soto has half a brain he’ll jump this ship as soon as he can.

Judge should’ve done it himself, but he came up through the system and is loyal. For that, we made him the next Mike Trout.

In his career Trout has played in 3 playoff games, Judge has played in 44 playoff games and will be playing in a bunch more before he retires. As will Soto when he re-signs with the Yankees.

I weirdly looked up Trout a few days ago, after some of the discussions about Mitch and his being injury prone. I’ve never given Trout a thought before that. Turns out he has played 72% of possible games, and that’s after four straight years early on of 157, 157, 159, and 159 games.

Also he has never once led the league in homers. Go figure.

Today on MSG they showed a replay of the Knicks-Suns game from December of 2012 where JR Smith hit a crazy 3 pointer with one second left to win it

Funny story about that game – my family and I were on vacation in Belize and staying at a lodge pretty deep in the jungle. We were able to get wifi, but when all the guests were on it was spotty at best. My son and I pulled it up on our laptop and once everyone went to bed we were able to watch with only a few lags here and there

When JR hit that shot we wanted to scream, but we would have woken up everyone in the complex. So we did sort of a silent yell. Also, we were watching the Suns feed, and the announcer was like “JR Smith, it’s good” in a depressed monotone..

So surreal sitting on a porch in the middle of the jungle watching a Knicks game!

Judge has played in 44 playoff games and will be playing in a bunch more before he retires

Number of playoff games is a meaningless standard.

He’s like Trout bc he’s a great player carrying an incompetent organization that is wasting his best seasons.

Didn’t JR also hit a buzzer beater a couple of weeks earlier at Charlotte?

I don’t know why, but out of nowhere I got this huge craving for a pizza with anchovies. I picked up a small pie with anchovies, black olives and extra sauce from my favorite spot in Charlotte. It was amazing! It took me back to my Brooklyn days.

Didn’t JR also hit a buzzer beater a couple of weeks earlier at Charlotte?

Yeah, they showed it during the telecast.

Not only did JR hit a falling sideways 3 pointer to beat the Suns, but with 10 seconds left he tied it with a jumper with PJ Tucker draped all over him.

One of the best bad shot makers ever

I’d be stoked if Steve Cohen and the Mets wrangled Soto away from the Yanks and their fanbase. That said, I remember feeling jilted when A-Rod and Scott Boras spurned the Mets to sign with the Yanks, and in retrospect I’m glad it happened…and I would guess there are lots of Yankees fans who kind of wish it never happened. In fact, A-Rod himself wished in retrospect that he had gone with the Mets.

The nice thing about rooting for the Mets right now is that the Cohen-Stearns-Medoza trifecta is giving me excellent vibes for the future, and the team seems to be doing things the right way, even though the salary cap is not as debilitating and Cohen could probably just buy the best team like the Dodgers have done. Seems like Soto would not be missing out on many playoff runs if he chooses the Mets, and I’m sure he took notice of life on the other side during the disastrous subway series.

The Knicks also have a nice thing going on right now, but there’s always Dolan to foul up the vibe and the cap to limit possibilities. The Jets have less of an aura of competence and both the owner and Rodgers are assholes, but maybe the laundry can break a 55-year Super Bowl famine someday soon. But I think the Mets are my best hope for a championship in the near future.

I don’t know why, but out of nowhere I got this huge craving for a pizza with anchovies.

That last thread made me anchovy-curious

    For the anchovy crowd…

I just had the Cantabrian anchovies at Hearth in the East Village and it is about as perfect a dish as exists in the world.

Clarence, if you came to this part of the town for a bagel, you should definitely come here for this.

The Mets pretty much need to buy an entire pitching staff, and will need to figure out what to do at 1B, 2B, CF, RF, and DH, so that’s a lot of problems to solve with that $180M. Stearns hit the jackpot on most of his one year contracts and he’ll probably need to find some of that magic again next year to fill some of those holes. The Mets have been just smashing the ball over the last 40 games, and when they’re healthy it’s a deep lineup, with some bats on the bench that also aren’t totally hapless.

They’re 4th in MLB in wRC+ which I have to say is just shocking. I did not figure this to be an elite offensive team.

Nothing like when your hated divisional rival commits two horrific baserunning errors and overrun a can of corn to giftwrap a win for you!

I just had the Cantabrian anchovies at Hearth in the East Village and it is about as perfect a dish as exists in the world.

I assume you had them on crostini as an appetizer… what was your entree? I live a few blocks from there.

Haven’t been to Hearth in yearsssssssssss. A perfect dish? Sounds dope. Thanks for the tip.

Saw the new Deadpool Wolverine thing. Still don’t know who would win.

clarence – pray tell – what is it that you have against sitting at home, playing video games, drinking mountain dew, eating chips and living the good life…

    what’s wrong with you 😛

on my way to go walk and continually serve this animal thrust upon me by eldest child, yep out on poop patrol – again…stepped downstairs, said hi to youngest son chilling in the living room…let him know it was my birthday…got a hug…asked him to guess what i was gonna do on my birthday – seamlessly said that i was going to do nothing

called ma and she got the answer right too…about five years ago i started pointedly sharing my health situation, while doing so, i filled those closet to me in on a few dozen or so other behavioral idiosyncrasies that had taken root in me over a lifetime…

took a good 3 years or so for the plan to take hold…but, now i get to do nothing…although, i had heard that doing nothing is actually doing something, cause you’re closely mimicking sleep behavior for the mind, allowing it to reset/repair i guess…

don’t no one go quoting me on that one…

eldest son stepped in to the room, more than half asleep, sang to me, and then was the third one in row to know me so well now…

although i did semi-commit to some nba2k later with the boys…
