Disappointed but not surprised that the Cavs don’t seem equipped to give Boston any trouble at all. The Mavs, meanwhile, were similarly outclassed by OKC. First games can be deceiving, but I wonder if we’ll wind up being the only team playing a lot of close games in this round.

Mostly, though, I’m worried about these never-ending injuries.

I’m guessing closer to 20. iHart has been a foul machine in the playoffs.

Any guesses on over under minutes for Precious? 12?

Much higher–say 18. The Pacers are going to target iHart to get him in foul trouble and we need him in Q4.

EDIT: bidiong beat me to it

Ironic / tragic that the players that have gotten hurt are the ones who have played the least minutes (Bojan, Mitch) and just on a freak bad landing (Julius). We are pretty much without any margin for error now in terms of injuries. That said, center was really the only position at which we could absorb another injury.

With Mitch + Bojan, I had dreams of making it to the Finals and maybe would’ve been sad if they didn’t make it there. With this injury I’ll be perfectly happy with getting to the ECFs and won’t be sad in any case – just enjoying the ride. This team has represented itself well – just terrible injury luck.

I’d like to see McBride getting 20 minutes, giving each of Brunson, Hart, DDV and OG at least 5 minutes of rest.

Against this particular team we could even play Josh Hart at center and play five out with Brunson, Deuce, Donte, OG, Hart.

I don’t know Hubert siakim and Turner did some damage inside. Even hart has his physical limits. I think precious has the lateral quickness and strength to guard these guys. He needs at least 20 minutes. And McBride has to get more run. This game is critical. Knicks have to put the hammer on the team and demoralize them. Finish this series off in 4-5 games so the starters can take a 1 week ice bath before the Celtics. I’ll be at the garden tonight, cheering our boys on, win or lose. Section 222. Ewing jersey on today. I’m living in the moment and enjoying these extremely likeable warrior Knicks. Does Brunson have one more transcendent game in him? One more for the ages. I hope so. I’ll be there. I’ve been at some tough losses. Overtime loss in San Antonio- Brunson drops 61. I was also at the game 5 collapse overtime loss. But I went to 3 other regular season wins at the garden. My playoff winning streak starts tonight! Let’s go Knicks!

Uh-oh, Trae Young just moved to CAA. Start figuring out your hypothetical trade packages now…

[Kidding! Kidding! Well, not about him going to CAA. But the other part.]

Overturning it would have been some fucked up shit, because that would have been saying that the rules don’t really matter at the end of the game, just the entertainment factor.

    Donnie would have been thrilled!

BTW it’s where the world is heading, it’s been at least 8 years since your former (and next) president started shouting “rules don’t really matter, let me entertain myself”…

Uh-oh, Trae Young just moved to CAA. Start figuring out your hypothetical trade packages now…

[Kidding! Kidding! Well, not about him going to CAA. But the other part.]

    My answer is: Vildoza 😉

I agree about Precious getting 18-20 minutes,
it’s hard to figure I-Hart playing more than 30 without fouling out, at least in this playoffs-version…
    (I hope to be wrong)

“BTW it’s where the world is heading, it’s been at least 8 years since your former (and next) president started shouting “rules don’t really matter, let me entertain myself””

    BANNED!

Chances the Hawks split the Rat-DJM pair? 80%?
And how much teams are willing to pay for the Rat, more or less than for DJM?

    FUCK JOEL EMBIID.

Seriously. Mitch was working his way back to full health and looked pretty good in game one against the Sixers. Didn’t the leg pull happen in game two? After that, Mitch has not looked the same.

Honestly, against the pacers it might be ok with more Precious. But fuck that dude for injuring Mitch. Knick public enemy number one.

I hope Precious can step up. I hope McBride can step up and get more burn. I hope we don’t have any more injuries and I hope we stomp these dudes tonight. We need to close this series out quickly.

After that, whatever happens against Boston, I’m good.

I have some sympathy for the refs on the Turner offensive foul. They can’t do their job well if they don’t react quickly to what they see without a lot of conscious thought. In this case there was an actual foul and they called it right away. It’s how they normally call fouls. Doing it that way is what they should do normally. If they didn’t stop to think about the game situation that’s ok with me. I’d rather have them just calling what they see without any second thoughts.

Max, I think it depends on what the other team needs. If they have a lot of offensive creation already, then DJM is more valuable. If you’re desperate for playmaking, it’s Trae.

Interestingly, though, I would have thought of Orlando as an ideal Trae team, since they have a lot of defensive talent to cover for him, and also have enough young players and picks to make it worth Atlanta’s while. But Zach Lowe insisted on his podcast yesterday that Trae would go too far against the culture the Magic have built, and he can’t imagine them trying to get him.

Okay, since the Knicks were off yesterday, and since there’s not much to say about the Mitch injury other than that it sucks — and that Joel Embiid should be in jail — let’s run down the number of NBA stars (or quasi-stars) who could be on the move this summer, and in some cases are likely to be on the move:

    * Durant (Phoenix can’t trade Beal, and would only trade Booker as a last resort)
    * PG-13
    * Playoff Jimmy
    * Trae or DJM (but not both)
    * Brandon Ingram (Pels have said they have to make a move, and he seems the most likely)
    * Klay

I leave out anyone significant? (As opposed to somebody like Miles Bridges.) The really fascinating question is whether Minnesota, for financial reasons, decides to break up this awesome team Connelly has built — and whether a title this year makes that more or less likely. The messy ownership situation is also hanging over them. But KAT could in theory be on the move, since Rudy and Ant aren’t going anywhere.

    I leave out anyone significant?

    Giannis?

I mean, Bucks will not trade him unless he asks out but that team is getting old fast. They had bad luck with Giannis being hurt but still. Hard to see them going anywhere.

Although now that I think about it, with our injury bad luck these playoffs, Mitch now being hurt, we might have been an ideal match up for them right now. But still, even if they got past us, they would get stomped by The Celtics.

So I’d add him to the list of people who could potentially move this summer.

You also left out the biggest one – Donovan Mitchell.

The (re)injury is being called a “stress reaction.” Sounds like it had nothing to do with Embiid, just a continuation of the problem that led to his surgery in the first place.

That means one of the following things:
    1) he came back too soon and re-aggravated the injury before it fully healed
    2) the surgery was not sufficient to fix the original injury and this would have happened no matter what even if he waited until next season
    3) he was good to go but re-injured the same area by spraining the same ankle

Any of these scenarios makes me feel like it’s a more chronic problem than a quick fix, and that more surgery is likely at some point. Hopefully I’m wrong! But at the very least, I would not be depending on a fully healthy Mitch for next season.

I don’t know Hubert siakim and Turner did some damage inside.

You’re right but I was thinking about doing it to counter the McConnell/Toppin minutes when those guys are on the bench.

So Donnie thinks the NBA should go the way of WWF, pure entertainment with the refs in cahoots to achieve a predetermined outcome. What a novel idea!

Well in point of fact, WWF has been very popular in this country for decades.

In terms of what Donnie said, I’ll simply repeat a musing I made before which is that the leagues only sell “competition” because they think that will sell the best. Given the popularity of pro wrestling and the modern trend toward gambling and fantasy teams and away from simply enjoying sports for the competition, that premise is extremely shaky and could even collapse upon re-examination.

It came up during Ohtani, but there’s no question whatsoever that if suspending a star for gambling will hurt business, they won’t do it, and we won’t hear much more about “competition” or the “integrity of the sport” theretofore in other than an ironic or sarcastic sense. The rationalizations will be easy to make; if there’s anything the US does super well, it’s PR and spin and rationalizing bullshit.

    April 1, 2024 Variety:

WWE‘s weekly shows saw improvements in the Q1 key demo ratings year over year while remaining mostly steady in total viewership.

Compared to the same time period last year, “Smackdown” is up 15% in the adults 18-49 demographic to an average of 892,000 viewers per episode and up 3% in total viewers with 2.4 million viewers per episode. It should be noted, though, that those numbers do not include the episode that aired on March 29.

“Raw” is up 6% in the demo with an average of 733,000 viewers, but down 7% in total viewers with 1.7 million viewers per episode.

Those TV numbers are significantly ahead of NHL games, MLS games, MLB games, and most regular season NBA games.

    “Boy kicked it.”

didn’t expect to wake up this morning to a run on mr toad’s wild tesla ride. her future therapist is going to have no idea that you have zero interest in the knicks and planted this entire incident to waylay the dadblame sessions.

I feel like the Cavs would be more likely to deal Garland than Mitchell at this point

It’s game 7 of the finals. The Knicks starting lineup consists of Jalen Brunson and Charlie Brown, Jr. Brunson is looking for his 8th straight 85pt game. Charlie Brown, Jr. has yet to score.

Also, just wanted to appreciate this post from last night. Had me laughing.

Alan, good call on Orlando as the Rat landing spot and good counter by Zach, I think he (the Rat, not Zach Lowe) is one of the most locker room disruptive player around and a coach killer.

I’m curious to see what the Wolves will do with KAT (especially if they end up winning the chip), but it’s an argument for later threads…

And maybe Mitchell is in the mix (but I see more Garland and Allen on deck).

    Re: Jimmy
I loved Riley’s end of season presser, where he said they don’t need to give him an extension until next summer, they will not trade him and that he already spoke with Jimmy’s agent about the need for Jimmy to find a way to play more games (no more than 64 RS games played in 5 years with the Heat).

P.S. Sorry guys for my writing spree, I’ve had a bad day and I need to fuck around a bit…

My link to the Harlem Globetrotters failed, but the point is that Donnie’s idea for basketball purely for entertainment is hardly original.

One problem with all the Mitch injuries not mentioned is that he’s losing trade value. I’m still pretty convinced the Knicks are around 50-50 to break up the Mitch/I-Hart combo at some point this summer or at the trade deadline and Mitch is the player that’s eventually out via trade. Mitch does a lot of good things, but I think the Knicks want more of a spacing and scoring threat at C so Brunson and Randle can get inside easier. Before it’s all over neither of them may be the starter and Precious will be the backup. 😉

“One problem with all the Mitch injuries not mentioned is that he’s losing trade value.”

That may be true, but his contract is still awesome and no longer long term and when healthy he’s a force, so I doubt that it’s losing all that much value.

The NBA has to decide whether is wants consistent refereeing in every minute of every quarter during both the regular season and playoffs or whether the standards are going to change depending on the situation.

If it’s the latter, they should keep in mind that gamblers do not like inconsistency. The NBA has made its gambling bed, the last thing the NBA needs is more accusations of game fixing.

Ironically, horse racing is going through the same thing based on the result of this year’s Derby. Traditionally, riders are given more leeway to be aggressive in major stakes races before a horse will get disqualified. This year there was some bumping during the stretch run that almost certainly altered the outcome, but there was no disqualification or even inquiry into the race. It was an infraction that probably would have caused a DQ in any run of the mill race. Let’s just say, gamblers are not too happy and it’s causing an uproar in the industry.

Actually, what the hell, it’s Question of the Day time:

Rank these scenarios from most likely to least:

1)Algae Blorps gets a bit of playing time, spelling the wings
2)Shake Milton gets a bit of playing time, spelling the guards/wings
3)Jericho Sims gets a bit of playing time, allowing Precious to spell a wing (while Hart and/or OG slides down a position)
4)Thibs exclusively plays the starters, Deuce, and Precious.

1)Algae Blorps gets a bit of playing time, spelling

    Lol, Algae Blorps… spelling

    MAX

It has been noted that Alan wishes to give Vildoza a max contract.

Pepper, are you just out of E.R. after the Rangers’ 2OT win? 😉

my wife wanted to go out to dinner right before the first OT started (and that right there is marriage in a nutshell)…so I went…put the DVR on but was checking my phone all during dinner and chugging Syrah…i was fat, drunk and happy when I got home to watch the replay!

Who’s the greatest goaltender ever: Richter, King Henrik or Igor?

OKC and Minny winner will get a chip because they are the healthiest good teams, or will Boston prevail because they’re pretty healthy and much more experienced?

Precious looked good against Siakam in February, hopefully he can conjure that magic again because Siakam bullied the hell out of OG.

I picked Minny and Boston and am feeling good about that. But I didn’t pick Finals winner – too close.

I’ll go with 3, 4, 1, 2 bc Thibs has played Sims and Precious before and is comfortable with it.

I should also point out 3, 4, 1, 2 is probably also the order of worst ideas to best.

“The NBA has made its gambling bed, the last thing the NBA needs is more accusations of game fixing.”

Good point, strat. I hadn’t even considered that.

To me, it comes down to two things: human error and fairness.

The missed call on the kick ball violation was pure human error. So was the missed travel call on Maxey’s 4-pt play, Brunson’s jersey grab, etc. That stuff will always happen unless the replay rules change.

Fairness involves whether the illegal action on the court gave one team an obvious advantage on a particular play. By the book, the Turner screen was clearly, undoubtably, definitively an illegal screen. But if DiVincenzo got over the screen without being significantly impeded, then the argument that the ref should have let the call go would be more reasonable. Similar to a foul far away from the ball that has no bearing on the outcome of the play, or an incidental one-inch slide of the pivot foot by a C in the high post who’s just looking to hand off.

But in this case, DDV was taken out of the play, whereas if Turner did not step out, he likely would have squeezed around it. He might have sold it a bit, but I have no doubt that Turner took a step and shifted his weight in a way that took DDV out of the play for enough time to give Indiana an unfair advantage.

i was fat, drunk and happy when I got home to watch the replay!

    Good for your health!
I watched on replay without knowing the score and my heart missed a huge number of beats!

Who’s the greatest goaltender ever: Richter, King Henrik or Igor?

As “greatest Rangers goaltender ever”* I can’t answer, my brain freezes…

    * I think there are other candidates to add in the “greatest NHL goaltenders ever” debate

“Who’s the greatest goaltender ever: Richter, King Henrik or Igor?”

You left out a guy who’s jersey is hanging from the rafters…

Z-Man’s rankings are also mine. I continue to think it’s weird we signed a 27 year-old who was a pretty solid NBA player last season and won’t play him even when we’re facing a comical injury situation, but maybe there are some politics at play I don’t understand.

Is there any chance at all Glen Taylor (putting aside the ownership mess for a second) is kind of sweating out a scenario in which the Wolves win it all? I mean, you have to think he would be a legendary public enemy if that happened and then he traded a key player for purely financial reasons.

I guess depending on the return he could try to sell it as a basketball related trade. Argue that Reid gives you a lot of KAT’s production for a fraction of the price, and see if you can use the return to shore up their guard play a bit.

Hank’s 1.(*) Igor could jump Richter at some point, but Richter won a Cup so he has to be 2.

(*) Notwithstanding the go-ahead goal he gave up to Killorn near the end of the second in 2015 ECF Game 7, which was crap.

Is there any chance at all Glen Taylor (putting aside the ownership mess for a second) is kind of sweating out a scenario in which the Wolves win it all? I mean, you have to think he would be a legendary public enemy if that happened and then he traded a key player for purely financial reasons.

It could go the other way, though: Taylor paid the exorbitant cost to get the franchise its first title, which then gives him the relative freedom to say, “I want to keep the team competitive, but this particular payroll is not sustainable.” So long as he keeps Rudy and Ant and McDaniels, they’ll be really good.

Randle & Bojan for KAT is almost a perfect salary match. TWolves could cut Bojan and immediately save ~$17M.

Maybe the Timberwolves will be the Florida Marlins of the NBA – win it all, sell it off, win it all, sell it off….

Depending on what will be available and which direction the team wants to go, Mitch & Bojan salaries plus picks may land us a very good player or players, or even a superstar, without losing Randle.

Clearly it’s 4-1-3-2. Thibs has far too much crippling anxiety to ever use a guy outside of the circle of trust like Milton in this situation.

Some of it was garbage time because they won easily, but the Thunder used THIRTEEN players last night. I didn’t even know thirteen players could dress. Ousmane Dieng got in the freaking game.

It’s such a bummer that we have so many guys missing. I still feel good about our chances to make the ECF, and perhaps there’s a perfect storm — likely involving KP’s injury lingering — where we make it to the Finals. But we’re so freaking thin, and so small, that it’s hard to imagine us winning it all. If it’s us versus the Wolves, that’s basically 1999, where we had to deal with Duncan and Robinson without Patrick Ewing on our side.

There may have been better goalies than Eddie Giacomin, but none more beloved. It’s a shame that he didn’t win a Stanley Cup.

I’m not a huge Rangers fan, my history of them dates back to the early 90’s. I do remember the goaltending debate between Richter and Vanbiesbrouck. Was there even an actual debate or controversy between those 2?

The latest Mitch set back does make me think that he’ll be the one we move this summer. HE is good when healthy but iHart is just as good in ways that are maybe better. We can draft another big or pick up a vet big to back up iHart. Plus Precious, who I think we should bring back for the right price.

Mitch + Bojan plus picks for Mikal is the move to make.

Who’s the greatest goaltender ever: Richter, King Henrik or Igor?

    Jacques Plante……

I’d love to know what bettors think about the Celtics chances. I watched the highlights. They look dominant. Derrick White is really good. Jrue is really good. Tatum is Tatum. They have good players all over that roster. My longtime personal crush Al Horford is almost 38 and is still unbelievably good. (My Horford over Randle take is aging like Bordeaux.) Porzingis is Porzingis.

Re Tatum, I don’t know if I trust him. He seems to miss a lot of shots in clutch playoff games when trying to heroball against good defenses. But he is a star player on both ends.

I guess I don’t know the Thunder well enough to handicap their chances either but Holmgren seems like such an intuitive defender. He moves well laterally and uses his length very well to compensate for his lack of strength. Shai is Shai. I have pretty much no doubts about his game.

No matter what happens I think the Finals are going to be great.

When I started somewhat following hockey the best goaltenders I guess would’ve been Roy, Brodeur and Hasek?

It’s such a bummer that we have so many guys missing

Yeah but Leon stacked us well. This problem is a choice.

Here’s how our current 7th, 8th, and 9th men match up against the rest of the league’s:

    Knicks: Precious, Burks, Milton
    Pacers: Toppin, Sheppard, Jackson
    Celtics: Kornet, Hauser, Pritchard
    Cavs: LeVert, Thompson, Morris
    Wolves: Anderson, Alexander-Walker, Morris
    Nuggets: Jackson, Braun, Watson
    Thunder: Joe, Wiggins, Williams
    Mavs: Hardaway, Lively, Exum

I’m with Hubert, i think Thibs will play Sims to have Precious at PF at times, something like 6 to 8 mins. I just don’t understand why Thibs doesn’t try to play Burks. If he keeps playing bad, take him out after 2 or 3 mins. By not playing him, we* don’t know for sure if we could’ve used him.

    *Thibs included

    I have Landry Fields as being a smart guy. It’s obvious he’s trading Trae. With that move DJM can play PG again, where he excels, and they’ll have a lineup like this: DJM, ?, Bogdan, Jalen Johnson, Capela;
He just needs to find a good SG and that’s a very good lineup.

Alan, i behaved good and didn’t mention the player who cannot be named. You know? The argentinian that rhymes with Mendoza. 😀

Did not realise Trae makes 43million. That is a chunk even if you believe he may be the missing piece, given his history of fit issues with teammates and coaches. Stephon 2.0?

a good dozen candidates for best all time goalie….but I think Brodeur has an argument based on longevity and his numbers…

on van biesbrouck vs richter…i do recall that being an issue (like montana and young)…but believe it was settled by trading beloved JVB…

I’d love to know what bettors think about the Celtics chances.

Prohibitive favorite, odds down to minus-115 — bet 115 to win 100. Implosion of the Nuggets has moved the Celtics’ number pretty significantly.

    Current odds:

    Celtics: -115
    Wolves: +300
    Thunder: +650
    Knicks: +1100
    Nuggets: +1600
    Mavs: +1800

Don’t know if Josh Hart is my favorite Knick, but he’s far and away my favorite interview:

“Point guard TJ McConnell, who Josh Hart so affectionately referred to as “an annoying little s—” earlier this week…”

It really sucks, but given our injury situation I think there’s such an enormous delta between us and Boston, Denver, and Minnesota I essentially think we have no chance despite being well-positioned to make the conference finals. Normally the difference in team quality isn’t so vast once the league is whittled down to four, but that’s what losing 3 crucial rotation players can do. Needless to say, there is nothing I would love to be wrong about more than this. I just see no scenario in which we can beat any of those teams 4 times out of 7, let alone do it twice.

Still, making the conference finals would be a great accomplishment and these guys deserve it, not to mention any positive impressions it may leave on stars with wandering eyes. Also, I am having a blast watching Jalen Brunson put up literal Wilt numbers and hope to take in as much of that as possible.

Here’s how our current 7th, 8th, and 9th men match up against the rest of the league’s:

    Knicks: Precious, Burks, Milton
    Pacers: Toppin, Sheppard, Jackson
    Celtics: Kornet, Hauser, Pritchard
    Cavs: LeVert, Thompson, Morris
    Wolves: Anderson, Alexander-Walker, Morris
    Nuggets: Jackson, Braun, Watson
    Thunder: Joe, Wiggins, Williams
    Mavs: Hardaway, Lively, Exum

Our guys, if Shake can show some semblance of his game prior to this year, is still better than Denver’s bench. Cleveland’s bench after LeVert is dismal. The rest blow ours out of the water.

Also want to note that Jarrett Allen & KP are both out and have made Levert & Hauser the 6th men on their teams right now.

Anyway, big game tonight! Macri’s newsletter today shed some interesting light on how Thibs might think about the bench minutes, or lack thereof:

Yet against the Pacers, Thibodeau played his starters together for 32 minutes – an unheard of total that one might expect to see in Game 7 of the Finals.

And yet again, to Thibodeau’s credit, those five starters as a group outscored Indiana by 13 points in a game they won by four.

It begs the question: how wise is it to rob Peter to pay Paul? Clearly the thought process as of now is to keep the starters together for as long as possible and combine the reserves’ minutes into one, hopefully-not-terribly-detrimental bundle. The reserves were awful together…but it also extended the minutes that each starter could play with the other four.

This checks out…if you assume that all of the starters will always outplay all of the reserves. The problem is it leaves us SOL if a starter, or even two, god forbid three, is having a bad game.

FWIW, I happen to think the good versions of Alexei Brookfield and Shake Milton have some skills that could actually compliment some of the starters. When we’re really in a rut, is it crazy to think we could steal a run with, say, Brunson-Milton-DDV-Brumps-OG? Far from ideal, but that’s life at this point.

there’s such an enormous delta between us and Boston, Denver, and Minnesota

We beat a fully healthy Denver team — absolutely crushed them 122 to 84 — with Jericho Sims starting at C.

We’re still a very, very good team and Denver isn’t as good as people think they are, it’s showing in this Minnie series. They had a cakewalk to the championship last year and losing Bruce Brown was huge. They should be running Thibs minutes with their starters.

OKC is coming out of the West anyway.

Minny will beat OKC. Surprised people here are so bullish on the Thunder. They are excellent, but Minny’s size is a serious, serious problem for a team like that. I could see the series ending in 5.

As for rotations, I think Thibs’s ideal is 9. He tried 10 early last season and went away from it and found success, and he’s largely stuck to that since then. We’re probably 10 deep at full strength, but down 3 players that means probably only 7 will see the floor, with maybe some spot minutes for Sims or Burks depending on where we’re struggling. Hart, Brunson and Divo will be playing 43+ each again.

If we get past this round, I don’t think our bench is as much of an issue as our starting lineup. Boston’s starting lineup is special, with or without KP. Everyone except their starting C can play 40+minutes if need be. Same with Minny, Denver, OKC, and Dallas.

Barring further injury, logic would dictate that we have a hard ceiling at a fairly easy defeat at the hands of the C’s. But the Knicks don’t seem to know that, so let’s fucking GO!

With the Mitch injury, any trip to the finals is now a pipe dream, so the best we could hope for would be to sneak by Indiana … and even that is 50/50.

Edit: to be clear, I’m still happy with that, even if we do fall to Indiana. This is a good team with a lot of heart, and I’ll be excited to see what a full year with a healthy Randle and OG would look like.

The rest blow ours out of the water.

The Celtics and the Thunder blow us out of the water. No one else (including our current opponent) has great options, coaches just work with what they have.

Isaiah Jackson, for instance, was a DNP-CD for 25% of the season. But the Pacers need rebounding in this series so Carlisle gave him 13 mins.

And you guys can’t have it both ways with Obi Toppin. If he “blows our guys out of the water” then we really fucked up.

“…….watching Jalen Brunson put up literal Wilt numbers”

The word “literal” rears its ugly head again. Wilt averaged 30 points and 23 rebounds per game for his career, and our Brunson Burner is averaging 37 points and 9 assists in these playoffs. It’s an apples-to-oranges comparison, and is not really literally the same at all.

Other than that, I completely agree with your post, and in general tend to agree with you.

I’ll take OG on Tatum, Hart on Brown, iHart on KP/Horford, and Donte/Deuce on Jrue any day of the week.

Brunson is the best player in that series and can 1-on-5 them, easy.

I doubt that Thibs goes beyond his core 7 tonight, the game is just too important. Beyond that, my hope is that Thibs will eventually run a player or two out there in the first half and see how it goes. Precious is obviously going to get a lot of minutes but I can see Sims getting a 5-minute look-see at some point. It wouldn’t surprise me if Burks or Shake gets some first half burn in Indiana.

The crazy thing is that the minutes really don’t seem to be impacting our starters all that much. Hart is made of rubber and springs, and DDV seems to make big shots in the end of games no matter how tired he is. OG and Brunson seem to get spot minutes of rest so not as big of a deal.

The key guy right now is Deuce. He gave us nothing in Game 1, that can’t continue to happen.

“I’ll take OG on Tatum, Hart on Brown, iHart on KP/Horford, and Donte/Deuce on Jrue any day of the week.

Brunson is the best player in that series and can 1-on-5 them, easy.”

    I’m down for that! Alas…

On another note, I wonder if Leon will try to use his two picks in this draft to trade up a couple of spots. Is there anyone worth trading up for?

I’m guessing (as are we all), but I presume Thibs isn’t playing Burps because he’s not showing up at practice, possibly for injury reasons, possibly because he is cooked. I’m pretty sure it’s not because Thibs can’t spell his name…

I doubt that Thibs goes beyond his core 7 tonight, the game is just too important.

Then if iHart plays 36 mins and OG 42 mins, like in game 1, Precious will play 18 mins. Right?
Josh Hart keeps playing the whole game.
And Brunson and Divo played 44 mins each, but i think we should lower this number a bit, maybe 40 mins each? Then it’s 16 mins for Deuce.
Yeah, maybe this is what will happen. But i’m fearing this extended mins the starters are playing will comeback to bite us if we reach the ECF, maybe even in this series if it’s longer than 5 games.

Yeah Burks is the one guy that I trust if Thibs isn’t playing him there’s a good reason. He freakin’ started him at PG 2 seasons ago.

The Mitch injury is sad, but as others have noted he’s really been gone since G2 of the Philly series.

Now we REALLY can’t take any more injuries to any player, and may already be too shorthanded to make the ECF. I kind of expect to lose tonight because we probably should have lost the last game, but maybe the forced swap of Achiuwa for Mitch’s ineffective minutes will help us…

The Celtics will stomp us anyway. I think Derrick White might be their best player.

Just advance to the ECF. After that, who cares.

We all know the team is nowhere near 100 percent. But these playoffs have shown us that we have a true top MVP player in the league and also that the Nova TRIO is legit. That’s enough for now.

At this point Thibs has earned the right to play everyone 44 minutes if he wants. The problem now is what he does when they sit for four minutes.

Carlisle is going to destroy him when he makes bad decisions, like in game 1 when Thibs went to the dreaded two-center lineup and the Pacers just pulled their center and ran up and down the court.

i think i am going sound off tonight if reggie is on the telecast

I think we’re collectively underestimating how good we are. While Boston should be the favorite, if we win one of the first two I think the series is wide open, especially if Brunson–and, to a lesser extent, Deuce and Hart–continue their torrid play.

And yes, Derrick White is probably their best player, which is hilarious. What a trade for them.

I think Minnesota has the edge against OKC. Matchup-wise Minnesota’s size will be a problem–OKC is big but soft, as Giddey, Williams, and Chet are all more finesse than brawn. OKC’s depth will be less of a plus as the talent gap dwindles and the starters need to play more. Contrastingly, their inexperience will show more and more. Book them for the WCF for the next three years, though.

All those long reviews at the end of the Pacers game were perfectly timed for Josh Hart and company.

All those long reviews at the end of the Pacers game were perfectly timed for Josh Hart and company.

And it’s pretty much guaranteed that every close game in the last 2 minutes will have at least one review like that. Sometimes multiple ones.

i think i am going sound off tonight if reggie is on the telecast

Yes, he’s annoying, but i can’t mute the game because i need to hear the crowd.

One of my least favorite genres of commentary is that if team X was so close to winning when player Y didn’t have a good game, they will most certainly win it when player Y shows up in the next game.

You heard variations of it after the two bad Brunson games against Philly (except the Knicks won, so the argument was that they had it in the bag), and now Hali.

Some news: player Y may be better but the rest of what happened is not a constant. So yeah, Hali may play better, but maybe Indiana doesn’t grab as many rebounds? Or maybe the Knicks don’t make as many turnovers? You can’t look at it in isolation.

Ptmilo, years ago, floated the benefits of the Knicks trading for Derrick White. It’s really puzzling why he’s not in a front office (or is he?).

And, for fun, here’s a Celticblogger.net take on how the Derrick White trade was going to be a disaster because it included Romeo Langford. (We’re not the only ones who do this shit, it turns out!)

    https://www.celticsblog.com/2022/2/11/22929311/sorry-folks-derrick-white-trade-disaster-josh-richardson-jayson-tatum-jaylen-brown-romeo-langford

It’s interesting how two monumental trades that were major disappointments last year (Gobert and Irving) are now working out, a full year later. Usually players seem to either work out or they don’t. (Maybe next year Young and Murray will suddenly be the backcourt juggernaut they were intended to be in Atlanta…)

“I think we’re collectively underestimating how good we are. While Boston should be the favorite, if we win one of the first two I think the series is wide open, especially if Brunson–and, to a lesser extent, Deuce and Hart–continue their torrid play.”

I respectfully disagree. I think folks are massively underestimating how good Tatum and Brown are. White is obviously an all-NBA level two-way player and has put up an 11.1 BPM so far these playoffs. He and Jrue Holiday form the best defensive guard tandem in the NBA. Al Horford is very crafty and can probably hold the fort as a starter. Al of their players off the bench can shoot except Tillman. They were the best team in the NBA by a seven game margin. All five of their wins have been pretty much blowouts.

We, on the other hand, are decimated by injuries and have no depth. We barely beat the Sixers with a shell of Embiid, and were fortunate to pull out Game 1 vs. Indiana.

Beating them in a 7-game series would be one of the most unlikely upsets in conference finals history. I’d be pleasantly surprised if we won more than one game and downright shocked if it went 7 or we won.

Here’s to me being downright shocked!!

Donnie, you have to set up a podcast with your daughter’s play by play, i thought it was great. 😉 😀

    with a shell of Embiid

Z, I agree with most of your post re: how good Boston is but can we (not pointing out just you, using the royal we here) stop saying Embiid was decimated?

This is his excuse EVERY FUCKING PLAYOFFS. He’s never 100 percent. He played just fine against us. He had a 50 point game for god’s sake. If he wasn’t decimated would he have broken Wilt’s single game scoring record?

Yes he was tired by the 4th in most games. That’s his MO. EVERY. FUCKING. YEAR.

Just tired of that excuse for him. It’s built into his DNA as a player. He will never be 100 percent in the playoffs.

Hilarious article, Donnie. He does indeed sound like the typical sportswriter:

He’s not fast, can’t jump, doesn’t have the handle or passing to be considered a pure point guard, and lacks the bucket-getting instincts of a modern scoring guard.

swifty, whether it is inevitable or not, the fact is that Philly was compromised by his injury and were nowhere near the team that they were before Embiid had knee surgery.

And without a 90-100% Embiid, the Sixers are at most a 5-8 seed type of team, just like Orlando, Miami, Milwaukee w/o Giannis, and Indiana. None of these teams were legit contenders or anywhere near the level of the Celtics. I have no doubt that the Celtics would have crushed the Sixers.

Crazy…how much April/May in Bernabeu and Bronx in Sept/Oct have in common. Winners, – win.

I’m woried that Carlisle will figure out that he should trap JB and force him off the ball the whole game…limit him to under 10 FGAs and 6FTA. Force Josh Hart to take 12 threes. Make OG put the ball on the floor, drive to the rim and make decisions. Defend 3 vs 4. No chance we score 120+ if JB has 15pts.

I wonder that every game, and yet no one ever tries it, so I guess no one thinks it would work?

It seems like trapping Brunson is only good when iHart isn’t on the court. If he dishes to iHart it usually results in a good shot it seems like.

Yes, he’s annoying, but i can’t mute the game because i need to hear the crowd.

i remember hubie mentioning he caught a game on the ESPN + app and it featured no commentary, just arena noise…

you would think that would be a feature everyone would be in favor of, at least the availability of the option…

i was at a restaurant eating lunch when Real made the comeback but there was something blocking half the screen from where I was sitting…i just saw the fans going crazy…

You should be able to figure out how to mute the commentary but not the crowd, because Reggie knows how to mute the crowd but not the commentary.

Your comment inspired me to look up a very specific thing: we had a 108 comment thread upon not re-signing Damyean Dotson.

How about the Willy Hernangomez chronicles?

“He Got Robbed Of The ROY” Hernangomez? 😀
