Did anyone watch any of the events last night? What did you think?

The skills competition seemed like a total farce. Not even worth commenting on.
The 3pt competition was by far the best event, not great but at least entertaining. All the competitors seemed to take it very seriously and were legit sharpshooters. Brunson was as good as anyone until his last rack, and had he made just one more moneyball, he would have been in a 5-way 30 second shoot-off to be one of 3 to advance to the finals, which was won by Dame on his last shot. But the irony was that Steph posted the highest total in just one attempt when he went up against Sabrina Ionescu, who was also awesome. It just underscored that the best players were not taking part in the competitions.
The dunk contest was sort of a dud. McClung is a freak of nature, his vertical is like 50 inches and I think he could compete with any dunker at any time. But the judges were kinda dopey and the competition was lame. Again, when you don’t have the Aaron Gordons out there, it takes the starch out of it. But there were definitely some nice, if redundant, dunks.
The star of the night was the glass floor, which I thought was really cool.
Dunks are one of the more exciting moments in a game, but there are only so many ways of doing them. It seems jumping over people/things is getting old, too. I mean, I guess you could do backflips all the way down the court, grab the ball on the last flip, and dunk it. Can’t think of many other options. Take a selfie of the dunk mid-dunk, maybe.
It’s why the three-point contest is more relevant. It’s a skill contest with real measurables — you make 26 out of 30, or whatever.
I feel blessed to be on a road trip and only able to see a few of the highlights.
IMO you need the very best players at each skill to be in the contest for it to generate any excitement. People want to see the very best and for merit to decide the outcome.
Maybe if they wrote All Star competition wins into player contracts that would help attract the best players.
The judges in the dunk contest were as bad as I’ve ever seen. It doesn’t help when fans don’t think merit is determining the outcome or the judges are too incompetent to be in that position to begin with.
The only thing worse than the skills competition was the Kenny Smith color commentary.
It seems that the judges don’t really have standards, nor can they look at replays, which are often incredibly revealing. I mean, look at the first McClung dunk. In real time it was pretty good, but the slo-mo replay shows how freaking awesome it really was, imho one of the great dunks in the history of the competition. And the scores were way lower than for Jaylen Brown’s rather pedestrian effort.
The judges kind of made up for it by giving him straight 50’s on his last dunk, which in my book was at best a 49. I’m just glad he didn’t get robbed like Aaron Gordon did a few years ago, or like ‘Nique did vs. Spud Webb.
I watched McLung’s first appearance, which I guess was last year(?). The thing about his dunks were that you had to watch them in slow motion to fully see and appreciate everything he was doing. To the naked eye they look a lot more mundane, and the judges didn’t get to watch replays. That’s why Nate Robinson won the event so easily. A short person dunking doesn’t need any nuance, and the judges are blown away.

Steph vs Sabrina was very fun. The dunk contest was an embarrassment. Maclung shouldn’t even be in it, but he is an excellent dunker.
Why hasn’t McClung stuck with a team yet. He has great gleague stats, played well in summer league, and has obvious nba athleticism.
Could he be a good use of one of our open roster spots or a two-way spot over Brown or Washington?
He’s 6’1″ and supposedly more of a SG than a PG. Looking at the g-league numbers, he’s getting 7.7 ast/36 but his 3.6 TOs/36 is unplayably high. He’s like a shorter Allonzo Trier.
Seems like a guy we could’ve at least tried next to Grimes/Hart/Achiuwa to give the 2nd unit some scoring punch.

unfortunately, for like every good western, there’s like 15 bad ones…
just watched about 10 minutes of The Old Way, nope couldn’t do it…Hostile Territory looked sort of interesting, read the review, nope, no thanks…
may just have to watch Deadman again for like the zillionith time…

Good show last night at the Toyota center…the tinnitus in my head is at a pretty consistent white noise level…hopefully that’ll be gone some time today…

Maclung is small, light and has short arms, he’d really have to fill it up to work in the league. That said, still kinda surprising nobody has given him a shot as a bench scorer.

I watched all the festivities for the first time in a while because I was genuinely excited for the Steph/Sab shootout, which lo and behold was the only thing worth anyone’s time. Was genuinely really cool to see her more than hold her own. Maybe Caitlin Clark gets involved next year.
There were some cool dunks–McClung can definitely throw it down. Agree with DRed that one of the garbage teams should give him a look. Would probably generate a couple of extra ticket sales and he’d get a chance, seems like a win-win.
I don’t think it topped the relatively low “it’s better to just watch the highlights later” bar though.The scoring was an atrocity. How about live fan voting? No way it could be any worse, warts and all.
Only really cared about Brunson in the regular 3PT contest, and the Skills Competition is like watching paint dry for me.
I can only hope various elbows and shoulders and achilles and hamstrings and feet were healing while it was all going on.
They should have a Ref’s Skills Challenge, where teams of in-person refs try to out-score the remote refs in Secaucus for a 5 minute scrimmage.
