Damn, the Bucks really lost to Memphis. And they are healthy. If not for the Knicks and Sixers woes they’d be a 5 seed at this point.

They were missing Middleton but that’s more of a feature than a bug at this point.

Despite all their woes, though, the Bucks have at least a 35% chance of pulling a ‘99 Knicks/‘23 Heat if they get healthy and hot at the right time.

If they don’t do that, though, there’s no way Giannis decides to run it back with these guys. This team is so beneath him.

I think it was more mocking the Nets than tampering in this case.

Yeah. I’m sure he’d rather be playing for the Knicks, but all those Villanova guys tease each other regularly.

how is Nerlens Noel only 29?

Well, his knees are 41. So the average is pretty old. 😉

As we well know, tampering works. Let’s get Mikal to Manhattan where he belongs.

As we well know, tampering works. Let’s get Mikal to Manhattan where he belongs.

It would shorten his commute to work!

So Brunson and Hart are in a deep psy-op to get Nets fans to turn on Mikal.

    hilarious. thx for the links.

Just wanted to respond to someone yesterday who said why would we want to spend money on keeping Precious when we can draft someone with higher upside.

I mean…Bird in a hand, right? Obviously when it comes to retaining ANY player it’s all about how much the contract is for. But if we can keep Precious at a reasonable price for a back up PF/Center, we should do it!

He has upside! He has shown that to us already. He’s 24 years old, which is still plenty young. Thibs is now his 4th NBA coach! Maybe he didn’t flourish in Miami or Toronto because he came into the league a little too young and didn’t have that stability and wasn’t in the right situation. But maybe now he is and maybe with Thibs he can flourish?

I don’t know. Just feel like if we can keep him, why wouldn’t we? ?Back up PF is a need for us. We all think Bojan is most likely here for the playoffs and to facilitate a trade this off season. He’s done well and he is still young enough to have upside. What kind of extensive offensive game does he need as a back up big anyways? Freaking Taj Gibson developed a corner 3 eventually. He can expand his game and if given a back up role with consistent minutes, he can develop that. Thibs obviously trusts him now, so that’s good.

Just feel like…if he addresses a need, even if it’s a less important need, why not keep him if the price is right and we can use those picks somewhere else.

Well, his knees are 41. So the average is pretty old.

…but his hands are 11, bringing down the average

    Is Noel better than Taj?

Noel has been 29 forever. I think he made a deal with the devil that has allowed him to stay that age forever in exchange for not being able to catch a basketball in his hands.

There is a gentleman by the name of Tony Bradley who was a late-first round pick of the Lakers in 2017 and basically washed out of the league. I think he could give us a more cromulent 15 minutes than Taj.

    Convo w Mrs Hartenstein today:

IHart wanted to play on the road trip and the team held him out. Should play after ASB.

    Randle expected back soon

    Mitch expected back soon

Team is in good spirits and not expecting injuries to derail.

    IHart has 2 cute labs

I think we’ve all (myself included) underestimated how awesome Mitch because iHart has been great. Mitch is a next level defender, though, and when he comes back there’s going to be a major “holy shit!” factor watching this team play defense with him and OG.

Well, his knees are 41. So the average is pretty old.

…but his hands are 11, bringing down the average

lmao Thanks I needed that. 🙂

Precious is a perfectly serviceable backup big. I like him. But when we are healthy he is not in our rotation. Both Mitch and IHart are much better as are Randle and Hart. Since we cannot really play Randle at the 3 at all or Hart at the 3 next to Precious, Precious would be out of the rotation completely when we are healthy.

He will be 25 next year and on his 2nd contract, he probably wants to go somewhere he can be in a rotation and fight for real minutes. That is not here. He would be our 11th man.

That is what draft picks are for. You fill the end of your bench with cost-controlled players who do not need or expect regular, consistent minutes. Those players also have the benefit of possibly outplaying their contracts and becoming important parts of the rotation in a couple years if they develop. Precious does not really have that long-term upside. I see no world in which he is ever better than Mitch, IHart, Hart, or Randle and no world in which it makes sense to play him next to two of them.

As for this year, I think Noel could be a possibility until Randle and Mitch are back. I also like Darius Bazley and Skal Labissiere. None of them are world-beaters but they are all upgrades on Taj and probably as good as Sims.

    Heard that about Donte, too.

I don’t think the plan is to pay both Mitch and Hartenstein starting center money.

One of them is going to be part of Leon’s big move, and then Precious will be the backup C and backup PF.

Unless they are getting Embiid, I am not sure they are likely to trade one of their centers. As someone (DRed?) mentioned, it depends on the position of the star. If it’s a KAT or a Giannis, Randle would go, and they can keep the backup center. If its a Mitchell or a Booker, same for DDV. Now I can see them keeping DDV if they somehow trade for Mikal, as they might want to keep the Villanova gang together.

The front office has shown that they usually don’t want to pay too much money for backups – thus IQ and Grimes being traded (I think they see Hart as their utility player more than a backup). But I think the center position is an exception due to Thibs’ schemes relying so much on good rim protection, and because both centers have injury concerns.

Am I alone in wishing to just see this team as currently constituted for a while rather than star chasing? I know their window for a star trade is closing, but unless they get a good fit (and personally I don’t think Mitchell is one), I’d be happy to keep going with this deep roster.

Speaking of Donte, here’s some clips from his profile in The Athletic today:

Opponents pick up DiVincenzo at half court. For two hours every other night, palms angle themselves just in front of his nose. Guarding one of the league’s most particular marksmen is no longer about forcing difficult shots; it’s about keeping the ball away from him altogether.

    Not everyone has succeeded.

DiVincenzo is averaging 26.5 points and 4.0 assists since Anunoby and Randle exited the lineup on Jan. 29. He’s at 40 percent from 3-point distance in those eight games — and it’s not like he’s been picky.

DiVincenzo won’t stop shooting; he’s splashing in 5.3 long-range makes on more than 13 attempts a game. Both figures place him second in the NBA to the ageless Stephen Curry during this time. And he won’t stop playing. His 40.4 minutes a night are second in the league to teammate Precious Achiuwa over this period.

This is not the same DiVincenzo as the one who excelled as a role player in Milwaukee, Sacramento and Golden State. Heck, it’s not even the same one who knocked down better than two of every five 3s over the first couple months of this season.

Only a few weeks ago, amidst a career-best season from 3-point land, DiVincenzo shot down suggestions that he had taken some sort of leap. He wasn’t necessarily an improved shooter but he was smarter, he said. DiVincenzo understands how accurate he is from the corners and off the catch. He insisted that after six years in the league he had “nothing to prove.” So after studying what he was best at, he leaned into all his strengths.

A higher percentage of his 3-pointers than ever were from the corners. Nearly all his long balls were assisted. And the overall success rate climbed because of it.

The reason why I’m excited about the team is that we really have not seen so much of its potential:

    – The defense anchored by OG + Mitch
    – The offensive spacing with OG and this new version of DDV (I know he was good early, but as Fred Katz wrote today, defenses are now playing him differently compared to earlier in the season – once Randle is back, it will make them extremely hard to defend).
    – The bench unit with a good defensive center.
    – Hart, Bojan and Burks reduced to the roles they are supposed to play (Deuce/Burks/Hart/Bojan/good center is a really unit that can probably do well against any other bench unit in the league. It’s also interesting because it emulates the starting lineup: excellent defenders at the 3 and 5 position; at least one good defensive guard; which all help to cover their weak defensive 4s).

This is not the same, spot-up savant that once lined the periphery of the Knicks’ offense — and of opponents’ scouting reports.

Coaching staffs going up against the Knicks now game plan for him with extra oomph. Teams preparing for New York have spent long portions of game-day shootaround scheming how to bother a seemingly unperturbed scorer.

Over this eight-game heater, DiVincenzo has shot 43 percent on pull-up 3s, according to Second Spectrum. He’s running more pick-and-rolls and getting to the basket more. Without Randle, the father of more 3-pointers than anyone else on the team, DiVincenzo has to create them himself — or generate ones for teammates.

Brunson is driving to the basket 24.5 times a game during the nine games without Randle and Anunoby, per Second Spectrum, the second most in the NBA during that time and up from 17.6 before it. Yet, the sharpest difference on the team belongs to DiVincenzo, who is driving four times more often since Randle got hurt.

The ball hits the ground when DiVincenzo runs a pick-and-roll — or because of those frantic defenders who fly at one of the world’s most uninhibited shooters, hoping to deter a jumper.

But DiVincenzo’s evolution goes even deeper than just handling the basketball more. He’s not even occupying the same places on the court.

Am I alone in wishing to just see this team as currently constituted for a while rather than star chasing?

If it’s Giannis, you gotta get him.

If it’s anyone else, I’m with you.

The backcourt is set. Donte is a star now, people just haven’t accepted it yet. OG is set. Center is set.

Randle is the big question mark. Obviously I want to give him a chance but that seems like the position to improve to get the other 4 guys to the next level.

One thing I like about Donte is he can miss badly on 2-3 shots in a row and will come back firing. He truly doesn’t think about it.

Randle is the big question mark. Obviously I want to give him a chance but that seems like the position to improve to get the other 4 guys to the next level.

I feel the same way. I could see a short-of-star upgrade by getting a guy like Markkaken (imagine the shooting), but I’d still like to see a healthy Randle with this group. Plus Markkaken will command a top-10 player price. I also worry about the Knicks losing some of their bully-ball mentality without Randle, which really seems to affect opposing teams.

I’m with you on the overall feeling, though. The best version of this team (i.e. one with Peak Julius) can win a championship, and I’d enjoy winning with Randle more than with Giannis.

    Yup.

And if this team is truly contender status with a healthy Randle and we don’t have to blow out picks on a big start trade, then Leon can stock the 11 through 15 spots on the roster with picks that we develop while the team competes and those draft picks can, theoretically, eventually replace players once they age out or get too expensive.

There’s a slim chance here we could set up a NICE window of contention and relevance.

howdy pepper…i hope things are well with yourself and the family…

by any chance, did you ever catch any of Disney’s What If series?

there’s this phenomenal episode (season 1, episode 2) with chadwick boseman as: Star Lord…

it’s hilarious, in particular with nebulas’ and thanos’ interaction…thanos has like the ultimate pickup line…

was going through season 2 and saw the episode titled: 1602, and something about the avengers getting together…

i don’t want to say i got excited for nothing…it was a great captain carter episode…

what it wasn’t though was Marvel 1602 by neil gaiman…phenomenally story…a little different graphics from what i would have normally read then, but the first issue really stood out on the rack…i’m not sure, i think they may have done variant covers also…

It’s amazing how Brunson’s leap has really changed the trajectory of this team.

How many players in the EC are better on offense than Jalen Brunson? Am I crazy for thinking it’s zero?

And if you’re taking a last second shot, are you choosing any of them over Brunson?

How many players in the EC are better on offense than Jalen Brunson? Am I crazy for thinking it’s zero?

Ok I love Brunson too but I think we’re getting carried away with this stuff.

There is a guy in the conference putting up 35 ppg on 65% TS.
Another guy is doing 31 PPG on 65%.

Another PG is doing 22 and 12 assists on 63% and leading the best offense in the league. 8.3 BPM

Brunson isn’t better on offense than those players, as much as we rightfully love the guy.

And for the 2nd question, which of those guys do you want taking the last shot over Brunson?

I don’t think I’d want anyone but Dame taking the last shot for me (we even saw a bit of it earlier this season when Dame beat the Knicks with, like, 19 points in five seconds or some shit). But Brunson is amazing!

For Giannis & Embiid, I’ll just say that their TS% is inflated from hanging around the rim and receiving passes from Dame & Maxey. Some portion of those are free points & percentage bumps that any tall-ish player could get. Both are assisted on over 50% of their 2pt makes.

Hali, Donovan, & Brunson have only 20-28% of their 2pm assisted.

OEPM puts Brunson in a virtual tie for 7th in the league with Giannis and Booker. That’s T-3 in the East after Hali & Embiid.

I’ll take the loss on Donte. I didn’t like the signing. I was worried his shooting in Golden State was a mirage and he wouldn’t be an improvement over IQ and Grimes. I was wrong. He has been fantastic.

I was also worried it meant the front office wasn’t committed to keeping IQ and Grimes which I was correct about. The IQ trade was ultimately worth it because OG is absolutely an improvement and a perfect fit but it didn’t seem we tried too hard to keep IQ out of the trade and then we couldn’t ship out Grimes fast enough. Moving him for mediocre bench depth.

So while the role for an additional bench guard in DDV was limited there was at least minutes and then he far surpassed expectations. There are no minutes for Precious and we’ve had a lot of minutes with him this year so I doubt there is some next level where he ends up better than IHart or Hart or Mitch or Randle.

I may be endowment effecting myself into this, but I don’t think Haliburton’s offense will translate as well in a slower, higher pressure playoff environment. He gets to the rim pretty well, but he doesn’t really have a bag to resort to if the three isn’t falling and the defense is tight. I think Brunson’s game is essentially built for the playoffs, even if it doesn’t yield the highest all in one offensive stats. He’s certainly got the most diverse ways of scoring the basketball in the eastern conference, and he’s at least in the conversation with Lillard for clutchest player in the league. Tampering works!

hey Geo…we’re doing ok…think I finally sold my house in CA today..its a big relief…hope all is well with you…seems like you had a tough week last week…

I haven’t see that show…I will check it out…running out of stuff to watch…just finished The Brothers Sun…good martial arts choreography in there..pretty funny also…

Watched Equalizer 3 the other night…that had some good close in fighting/weapon usage…pretty nice scenery to there on the Amalfi Coast..Denzel did a nice job…weird that Dakota Fanning is in there…they did a movie together Man on Fire (which is always a good watch) when she was a little kid…now she’s all grown up…

The IQ trade was ultimately worth it because OG is absolutely an improvement and a perfect fit but it didn’t seem we tried too hard to keep IQ out of the trade

Seems very likely we could have used Grimes and two 1sts instead of IQ but we were just dying to get rid of him. Damn shame.

I dunno, Hali seems pretty damn legit to me. I think he’ll do just fine under playoff pressure.

“I was also worried it meant the front office wasn’t committed to keeping IQ and Grimes which I was correct about.”

But the question is, was the FO correct to not be all that committed to keeping them? It depends on how good they turn out to be, doesn’t it? And in IQ’s case, it depends on how much he signs for, doesn’t it? Because my take is that they felt that IQ was not worth signing for the $25M he wanted, and if they offered any less, he was going to become a RFA, and then who knows, maybe someone offers him $30M? Then you risk either overpaying him or losing him for nothing.

I think the moment that IQ chose not to sign for what the Knicks offered, he was likely to be traded, so it was just a question of return. As to the OG trade, it all depends on how much you value RJ. If he keeps putting up a $600+ TS%, IQ may become an afterthought. But I think Knicks management wanted OG desperately and were not as high on IQ as many here are, and were probably a bit out on RJ and his contract. I also think they were frustrated with Grimes’ lack of further development, and did not think he was worth waiting on any longer.

It might be a while before we know how it works out, since stat-padding in big roles on shitty teams doesn’t do much for me.

I did some interview questions for a documentary our old buddy, Robert Silverman, is working on. That was fun to have a Knickerblogger reunion there.
