“Quick will get his 25 mill a year ..even if the Raps balk some team like Detroit will come in with a big offer and force the Raps to match”

    It won’t be Detroit…

Spurs and Magic are both much more likely to throw a big offer sheet at IQ, given their needs for a PG and/or more outside shooting from the backcourt.

I think that on paper, PJ Washington would be an excellent pickup. He’s young, athletic, and can shoot. I think his stats are being negatively impacted by playing for a terrible team. Now to be honest, I haven’t done a deep dive on him, but I believe that I liked him in past years as a potential target based on how he looked when he played us. Again, it’s a situation where I would trust the FO’s due diligence in not wanting to mess up a good thing. At worst, it seems like a decent use of Fournier’s salary and a protected first rounder, if he could be had for that.

I dunno, I would probably take the under right now on a $25M starting salary with increases for IQ, but I guess it’s possible.

There just aren’t going to be a lot of good free agents, and several teams will have a LOT of cap space. I think IQ gets paid.

Woj reported that Brogdon is unlikely to be moved, which is weird, but Blazers will Blazer.

Looking at his stats, his shooting declined quite a bit this year. It’s looking more like his >.600 TS% in Boston is an exception. He’s been at the .560 range in 4 out of the last 5 years. It’s still an upgrade, his assist rate is quite nice, and he’s in a terrible team which might be hurting his stats. But it gave me a bit of pause, especially if the Blazers will be seeking an overpay for him.

IQ’s RFA status might be a detriment to him getting paid. Teams will either have to way overpay for him or TOR will surely match and there’s no point in even making an offer. Seriously, how many RFA’s of IQ’s caliber who a team traded a valuable asset for have then signed an offer sheet that wasn’t matched? All that would do is screw Masai into overpaying. And as such, why would any team play that game if they know that whatever they offer will surely be matched?

It kind of reminds me of when the Knicks did not go after FVV because they knew that he was just going to use TOR for leverage. Although PHX had to match Ayton’s offer sheet because they didn’t want to lose him for nothing, but the bad blood remained. In other words, nothing would really surprise me.

Zach Lowe had an interesting point in his most recent podcast: a lot of contenders will be able to trade many more picks this summer compared to now (specifically mentioned the Sixers – who will have 5 tradable firsts – Bucks, Mavs and Heat). He thinks this is giving teams with non-expiring players an incentive to hold onto them until the summer. It might explain why there have been so few rumors on the likes of Brogdon.

Something else from that podcast that kills my dream of Mikal: if the Nets ever decide to trade him, Houston would be interested and could offer the Nets all of their picks back, which is much more valuable than anything the Knicks can put together (without even going into the rivalry).

LeBron James mum on player option for 2024-25

Thought this was a link to LeBron’s mom weighing in. haha. #mrshartensteineffekt

He thinks this is giving teams with non-expiring players an incentive to hold onto them until the summer.

This is part of why I never thought we’d get Brogdon… his expiring next year will be more valuable to the Blazers.

Almost makes me think we might be better off swapping Fournier for a bad contract and a pick, if possible. Idk who that bad contract would be, though.

But I have faith that the FO will come up with some kind of machination to get us both a bit of bench help and some future draft capital at the same time.

Yeah, Marechal, and Zach added that this means the most likely players to be moved will be expiring contracts. Which would make Burks or Tyus Jones more likely than Brogdon or Bruce Brown or one of the Utah guys. And would require more complicated cap mechanics to avoid wasting Fournier’s deal on such a move.

He thinks this is giving teams with non-expiring players an incentive to hold onto them until the summer.

Not sure that holds up to logical scrutiny. Teams typically pay more if they’ll get two playoff runs out of a player than they do for a one-year rental.

Do we seriously think a team like Portland is thinking they should hold on to Brogdon bc Philadelphia’s unprotected first in 2032 is going to be available this summer? That pick isn’t for them.

I agree it’s a bit of a gamble, but with the free agency market being very dry, I could see prices increasing for trades. And yes, you can usually get more for two playoff runs, but most of these players were are talking about are not needle movers. They are more about marginal upgrades in teams where there is a fit. And in the summer there may be more teams in the market where they could fit, thus increasing their price. I could see the Bucks perhaps wanting a guy like Brogdon, but they have to wait until summer to have anything of value to trade. Then again, Brogdon’s health makes this a risky proposition.

“Of course, he was cognizant and aware that he was putting on a towel that said New York Knicks. Why would he mess with the Knicks? Because he was using the Knicks as a tool to pressure the Lakers,” Windhorst said on the Hoop Collective (four-minute mark).

I mean we’ve all had the thought but Windhorst is the guy who figured out how to actually get a nickel for every time LeBron acts preening and passive-aggressive.

Nice piece on Jokic in the New Yorker magazine. A couple bits:

Jokić touches the ball more often, per game, than any other current player does, but he rarely keeps it long: his seconds per touch—one of countless stats tracked in the increasingly analytical world of pro basketball—is not among the top hundred and fifty in the league.

A few years ago, Dejan Milojević, who coached Jokić when he played for Mega Basket, a team in Belgrade, told Sports Illustrated about a drill he used to run with his players. A big man would catch the ball, then either pass or try to score, depending on the number of fingers—odd or even—that an assistant coach, standing on the sidelines, was holding up. The drill was meant to speed up the players’ decision-making. Jokić was so good at it that Milojević enlisted two assistants to stand on opposite sides of the court; Jokić was required to look at each of them, calculate the total number of fingers the pair were holding up, and then, based on whether the number was odd or even, make his move. Jokić could do this, too, Milojević said.

    And finally this — haha.

Julius Randle, of the New York Knicks, recently recalled the first time he faced Jokić. “I’m, like, Man, why is this dude killing, bro?” Randle said. “Slow and fat. He ain’t nice like that, I guess, in my head. And, bro, he came, he played—he hit, like, twenty-five. I’m, like, Man, how the hell did this happen?”

I really hope Anunoby and Grimes are sitting tonight because it’s the Grizzlies. Otherwise we should be very concerned.

The NBA trade deadline is looming at 3:00 PM ET on Thursday. Things have been a bit slow during deadline week, and there are a number of factors for that.

One issue that that teams are finding that there isn’t a lot of interest in 2024 draft picks. The 2024 draft class is projected to be weaker than most other classes. That has teams more focused on adding future picks.

That spills over to teams being increasingly wary of trading future picks. With the NBA’s new second apron rules, many contenders are holding onto their draft picks because they’ll need them to build out their rosters.

In addition, 11 teams control 75% of all future draft picks. That much draft capital being controlled by roughly a third of the league has created somewhat of a trade logjam.

There are also far more buyers than sellers on this year’s trade market. Several teams are still in contention for the postseason, whether that’s for playoff spots or spots in the Play-In Tournament. And the handful of teams that are out of contention, are asking high prices for their players, as many of those players are on long-term deals.

    ADRIAN WOJNAROWSKI, BOBBY MARKS/ESPN

Poindexter, a lot of the off the record reporting — including from Mrs. Hartenstein — is that Grimes will be out through the All-Star break, but that it’s not serious. OG is a bit more concerning, though the hope is that they’re just being cautious during a stretch of the schedule when they can afford to be.

The problem of an expiring contract is only this summer, right? Because if we re-sign the player using bird rights, next February he’ll be available to be traded.

The changes they made to the NBA playoffs really have added a lot of spice. Not like adding the Elam ending but it’s a lot more interesting than it used to be.

The problem of an expiring contract is only this summer, right? Because if we re-sign the player using bird rights, next February he’ll be available to be traded.

Yes, but for a variety of reasons tied to both the Knicks and the league, if a Star Trade is happening, it’ll be this summer. And Fournier’s salary would be, if not essential, then hugely useful for such a deal — especially if we don’t want to give up too much of the current rotation to do it. i.e., if we’re getting a star PF somehow, I’d rather move Randle and Fournier than Randle and Mitch. Star wing, I’d rather move Fournier and another salary than Fournier and Hart, etc.

Even if there’s not a Star Trade and we’re bringing in another OG type (i.e., star in his role, very complementary to Julius and Jalen), Fournier would be really handy. Whereas having to sign and trade a Tyus Jones into such a package becomes much more complicated.

Something else from that podcast that kills my dream of Mikal: if the Nets ever decide to trade him, Houston would be interested and could offer the Nets all of their picks back, which is much more valuable than anything the Knicks can put together (without even going into the rivalry).

They also mentioned a funny, game theoretical aspect of this though: if the Nets are trading Mikal, the Rockets likely want to keep the Nets’ picks! I mean, the Nets would be woeful in that scenario.

So the Nets would have to convince the Rockets that they’ll only trade Mikal to them, which is the exact opposite of what most teams want to convey when dealing with a trade partner.

I think Sean Marks is a a good, smart executive who ran into some bad luck…but it’s hilarious he’s put the team in what one might call a Billy King adjacent situation.

I think a lot of our purported interest in Brown has to do with the fact that it’s basically a way to keep the Fournier salary slot on the books without the unpleasantness of, well, keeping the Fournier salary slot on the books. Brown’s contract is actually even more useful since he makes a little more money.

That’s not to say we don’t care about the basketball fit at all–Brown would obviously be in our rotation–but I don’t think we’d be hearing so much about this if it wasn’t for his contract.

So it all comes down to how much the Knicks are willing to pay for a guy who helps to some extent with the basketball, but helps a lot more clearly with roster planning and avoiding unpleasantness.

What about Chris Paul? – Does he makes sense as a useful backup and $30M expiring for next year. Send them Fournier and get back a draft pick. Saves them a ton of luxury tax money and they not going anywhere.

Director, we talked about Paul the other day. Sounds like Warriors would only trade him for an upgrade, rather than give him away, since they can just not pick up his option for next year, or pick it up and use him in a trade in the summer. And they have no need to pay anyone to take him off their hands.

The Warriors want Chris Paul’s trade-accommodating salary as much as we want Fournier’s.

For all the talk of overpaying for OG (they didn’t), I’m so glad they traded for him when they did, given how much of a seller’s market it has become since.

I wonder if Masai sold both him and Siakam too early…

    https://www.sny.tv/articles/knicks-trade-deadline-julius-randle-radar-targets

Begley with some trade deadline intel, which we can also discuss, but this item felt most notable to me:

As far as Grimes’ knee injury is concerned, I’m told there is no structural issue there. A hyperextension usually requires several days of rest before a player can return to the court.

On Anunoby’s elbow injury, I was told he was improving late last week. Thibodeau was asked recently if the Knicks would bring Anunoby back if there was a chance that he’d re-injure the elbow or if they would wait until he was 100 percent healed. He didn’t directly answer the question, but he suggested that the Knicks wouldn’t want to risk further injury to Anunoby’s shooting elbow.

Think sometimes we forget how young this roster is. JB 27, DDV 27, iHart 25, OG 26, Mitch 25, Grimes 23, Deuce 23, Achiuwa 24, Hart 28 & Randle the old man @ 29. This a perennial 50-55 win team, just by keeping it together.

Yeah I don’t believe the Wizards and the Pistons need an offseason to asses their futures. The Pistons have six (6!) wins.

If this were a seller’s market, sellers would be selling.

The fact that they’re not means the offers they’re getting aren’t very good.

Same old, same old from Katz’ latest:

The Knicks have spoken with the Toronto Raptors about Bruce Brown, league sources have said, but Grimes hasn’t been part of those conversations. Instead, discussions have centered around Evan Fournier and draft compensation for Brown, who could eat innings like a Liván Hernández impersonator.

The Knicks also have dipped and dabbled with the Detroit Pistons’ Alec Burks, according to league sources, who also would not command Grimes in return. The Athletic’s James Edwards III has reported that Detroit is “leaning toward keeping” Burks, a veteran on an expiring contract who has fans in New York including Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau.

An even more thorough trade deadline intel piece from Katz:

    https://theathletic.com/5254675/2024/02/06/knicks-nba-trade-deadline/?source=emp_shared_article

He discusses lots of names, details how this FO communicates with other teams about trades, and speculates on various packages. This is among the more significant passages:

Momentum has skewed away from the possibility of a Grimes trade, league sources have said. Though one is still possible, not much has enticed New York. The goal, as it has been for weeks, is not to trade Grimes no matter what the best offer is. It’s to use him to acquire someone worthwhile for the long term. The Knicks haven’t found that player, yet.

If they don’t move Grimes, they could revisit his trade market this upcoming summer, when they are targeting a big move for a star and when Grimes is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension.

    Edited to add: Jinx, Noble!

holy cow pepper, you were not kidding – it’s raining like crazy here 😳

turned on the news last night and saw just how bad things have been around the state…

hopefully all the KB cali folks are staying safe…

to be honest i didn’t leave the house too much when i was working, without work and a partner/kids in the house i’m getting out even less these days…

about the worse the weather offers for me at the moment is that the pooch ain’t so crazy about pooping in the rain…

i’ve tried counseling the dog on the benefits of a bidet, she doesn’t seem to be buying in to it though…

It feels abnormal for the trade deadline to be before the All Star break. This hasn’t always been the case, has it?

I’m wondering whether there will be any interesting buyout options beyond Kyle Lowry….

Okay, answering my own question, yeah, it seems like having the trade deadline before the All Star Game is a relatively new thing. I don’t like it.

If I recall correctly Knicks made the Van Horn-Tim Thomas trade on the actual day of the All-Star Game.

It looks like they are going to do something small to help the bench or do nothing at all and then revisit a more significant upgrade in the summer. I’m fine with that as long what they do makes sense short and long term. Sometimes the right long term upgrade is not available. #Burks #Brown

    From Macri’s substack:

Re: trade deadline, just reading the tea leaves, I think their top target is Brown but they’re holding firm at their current offer of Fournier and a first. My guess: they’ll relent on Thursday and offer a better 1st than they’re currently offering and wind up with him. If that doesn’t happen, I think Burks is their backup plan, which isn’t 100% because Detroit isn’t a rational actor, but I’d still wager even money that either Brown or Burks is a Knick after the deadline. Haven’t ruled out Clarkson, but can’t imagine the Jazz are going to come down on price. I’d assume NY has Brown above Clarkson on their wish list given relative likely amenable costs, but I can’t be sure. Don’t think anyone else is seriously in play, other than Lowry. My biggest question: where is their level of certainty on Lowry, and how much (if at all) will it push them towards upping the ante ever so slightly for one of the other primary targets.

I recall the Carmelo Anthony saga overwhelmed the 2011 game, and pretty much everyone hated that. It makes sense to have business taken care of before the showcase.

My guess: they’ll relent on Thursday and offer a better 1st than they’re currently offering and wind up with him.

That’s my guess, as well. Leon isn’t shy about ponying up and everyone knows it.

I think a lot of our purported interest in Brown has to do with the fact that it’s basically a way to keep the Fournier salary slot on the books without the unpleasantness of, well, keeping the Fournier salary slot

I was thinking the exact same thing because, let’s be honest, Brown isn’t a great shooter… and he’s small.

Also, it does seem like Lowry would be a nice fit as a buyout option. I’m all for that.

if i were guessing, leon does nothing…that seems to be the front office normal style…

the hart and OG trades were nice though…I don’t even remember the trade before that…

i like the idea of picking up roster pieces in free agency…and, now may be the time to draft this spring…

truth is though, i don’t really understand the salary cap stuff well enough to know what “pressure” may necessitate the need to trade…

jalen brunson, continuity, chemistry and thibs with an electric cattle prod up everyone’s butt seems to be our best chance at the moment to get past the first and second rounds…

It’s just so hard to know what we should do with all of the injuries, which is why doing nothing might be the wisest course.

Thing is, fully healthy (or healthy without Mitch) we were smashing teams after the OG trade and the only real weakness was not having another ball handler/PG for the bench. And even that “weakness” would be relatively unimportant in the playoffs when Brunson potentially will play the entire game. Grimes, McBride, Hart, Precious are good enough defensively that you can tread water if Grimes and McBride aren’t hitting 3’s for the few minutes each game Brunson and Randle are out. And this is without Mitch mind you.

So the best course might be to just do nothing. Like why waste a pick or even Fournier’s expiring and especially Grimes for a player you may not even need. Like if Brunson goes down we’re fucked even if we got Brogdon. And if it turns our Randle and/or OG (and to a lesser extent Mitch) are out for the season and playoffs, then we’re probablly not going much past the second round anyways, sop again why burn an assett.

We’re probably do nothing or maybe make a small move and pick up someone like Lowry off the waiver wire. And that is fine. If we end up hitting a ceiling in the post season bc of injuries, better to try and shore it all up in the off season anyways.

If we can get Burks for two or three 2nds, it’d be a nice scoring boost till Randle gets back and a strong insurance policy after. It shouldn’t affect our future trade options much either.

I could swallow Brown for a heavily protected 1st… maybe throw in a 2nd. He’s a better option at backup 4 than anyone on the roster and might run the point for that unit, 2 birds 1 stone. He can backup any position but C, which we’re already loaded at. On the other hand, he and Hart are probably unplayable together in the playoffs.

Sims is out with an illness so looks like we’ll be seeing Taj tonight.

Pretty soon it’s just going to be Brunson vs. the other team 1 on 5. And we’ll still have a good chance of winning.

Memphis might be the only team more injured than we are right now. Honestly surprised they can still field a team.

if i were guessing, leon does nothing…

I think that’s bordeline negligent. He needs to get a backup PG or we will deeply regret it in the playoffs.

Memphis had 13 players on their injury report. 13!

Knicks vs Grizzlies: Night of the Living Dead

kind of like rookie players and head coaches – rookie gm’s are gonna make some mistakes…

even at one time well thought of gm’s make mistakes..

proof comes through performance…if we re-sign OG and he develops like julius and jalen that would be a huge success this season, in conjunction with donte in the off-seaon = good year…

If the league was smart, they’d move the All Star game to accommodate the trade deadline. One is way more entertaining than the other.

I’d still like us to look further into De’Andre Hunter, he of the 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting (along with 7 rebounds) in 19 minutes last night. I know that it was a crazy high-scoring game against the Clippers, but still.

When we had a stretch of 3 games in 4 days, Thibs played OG 44 minutes, 43 mins, and 43 mins.

It’s not all medical, coach. You’re insane.

If we are desperate for more bodies why not pick up a free agent or play some of our deeper bench instead of using assets for marginal players like Burks, overrated and bad fits like DJM or Brown, or old injury risks like Brogdon.

If we need wings we could sign TJ Warren, Jaylen Nowell, or Stanley Johnson, resign DaQuan Jeffries, or maybe just play Fournier.

For bigs, we could try Nerlens Noel, JaMychal Green, or even Blake Griffin, or give Toppin some minutes.

For PGs, we could simply play Flynn or take a flyer to see what John Wall, George Hill, or Austin Rivers have left.

All these players have probably enough that they can get us through the next month or two until we are fully healthy. No reason to give up assets for players who are not as good or fit as well as our top 8-10 players anyway.

Mitch resuming on court activities after the all-star break means he should be back sometime in March, no? That’s certainly good news- hopefully OG will be back by then!

Regarding Mitch, “resuming on court activities” is suitably vague enough that it could mean anything. But hey, hopefully it actually is good news!
