On the one hand, that sucked. On the other, playing this short-handed was going to catch up to us eventually. More importantly, it just underlines the fact that the team needs to make at least one pre-deadline move for more firepower and/or playmaking. I imagine the FO knew this anyway, but it’s a bit harder to shake things up when you’re on a scorching winning streak than after you lost on national TV for the exact reasons we’ve been aware of since the trade. Randle and OG being out has exacerbated the problem, but still. Bring in Brogdon, or somebody who can run a damn offense with the second unit, and who can reliably score when opponents swarm Brunson to that degree.

If we were going to lose, I’m glad we lost this way. Doubling Brunson 30 feet away is what opponents are going to do to us in the playoffs. The coaching staff needs to start preparing.

Those doubles would end very differently if we had Randle and OG on the team, so I’m still pretty confident.

Anthony Davis also had a majestic performance defensively, so that sucked, Brunson was having to settle for midrange shots much more often than the floaters / layups he likes to do because Davis is such a force inside.

It really does seem like Brogdon, on paper, fits our exact need. And after the truce with Klutch, maybe it’s possible to do this trade without Grimes going back?

    +1

Doubling Brunson 30 feet away is what opponents are going to do to us in the playoffs

They’re not going to wait til the playoffs. They’re going to do it every game until Randle gets back. And they’re probably going to do it for… I don’t know… how long is Josh Hart’s contract?

The return of OG and Grimes will mitigate this issue and hopefully give Leon more time to let the market for Brogdon or others play out. Portland has no incentive to deal Brogdon right now absent a Godfather offer, which in the long term is not in the Knick’s interest. I’d trade off some losses now for keeping our powder drier.

I think they need a ball handler/shot maker more than a playmaker. Would Bruce Brown have made a difference in a game like yesterday? Not really. Give me someone who can put the ball in the basket. For me right now, Brogdon > DLo (sigh) > Burks > Brown > Clarkson.

I thought about reaction to the Doris Burke bashing last night and I agree that it was unkind and over the top for me to employ the term “misogynistic”. That word has become maybe a bit too much of a catchphrase for any kind of bias regarding women, and I used it out of laziness rather than anything else.

My larger point is that Doris Burke is a pioneer and a hall-of-famer and entitled to more respect than she gets from fans. When I hear her talked about as if she’s in the same group with Mark Jackson, i.e. that she kinda ruins a broadcast, it just seems undeserved and disrespectful, considering a) how hard it is to be a pioneering female voice in a world where almost every other voice is male…and what it took to be essentially the first (and that’s as a sidekick…is there a full-time female Mike Breen for any NBA team? I don’t recall hearing one…) and b) how bad some of her male counterparts are, not only nationally but locally, like our boy Wally. Maybe I was reacting to Fred Katz specifically shouting out how universally respected she is for her knowledge and work ethic among her peer journalists. So whatever I was trying to say, it didn’t come out as intended, and I apologize for that to anyone who was taken aback.

I recently listened to Monica McNutt on a radio broadcast and she was pretty good! I like Hahn better but she’s way better than Wally.

As to the game, it was a competitive loss against a decent team to end a 9-game winning streak. The Lakers did a nice job of bottling Brunson up and there was no one else to go to. It’s definitely a game where a healthy and engaged Fournier might have helped, so that’s a demerit for Thibs. But since I don’t expect us to win all of our remaining games, and since we have two nights off for OG and Grimes to get healthy and a trade deadline coming up, it’s really no biggie.

As someone who tends to react on the fly the same way, Z-man, I totally understand you. Sometimes we end up just using the buzz words in unkind or unjustified ways.

The way I try to solve this in my head and my work is to try to separate structural misogyny, which is absolutely a thing, to specific instances of misogyny. What I mean by this is trying to remain as aware as possible of the ways centuries of misogyny have molded our actions and our speech, while also understanding that particular actions or opinions, while obviously to some degree influenced by that, can still have no misogyny intended on them.

It’s not a perfect solution, but I think it can work with a little good faith, and I don’t think you accused anyone in bad faith.

Thanks Bruno. As I said, or tried to, there is the matter of taste i.e folks should be free to judge what they like and don’t like, and the matter of incorporating context into one’s standards. One can find Doris grating while having some measured tolerance for her in appreciation for how hard she has had to work compared to her male peers, especially for what shouldn’t be all that big of a deal in the first place.

PS Bruno, I just ran the scenario by my lovely wife and she said, “Don’t apologize, it was fucking misogynistic!” Bless her heart!

At some point we’d have to lose, right? And we’re 9-1 in the last 10 so things are (still) going great.

Bring in Brogdon, or somebody who can run a damn offense with the second unit, and who can reliably score when opponents swarm Brunson to that degree.

I’d prefer Brogdon, because i think he’s the best option and also because Hubert wouldn’t have to think of a name for his next son. 😀

For me right now, Brogdon > DLo (sigh) > Burks > Brown > Clarkson.

In my case, Brogdon > Burks > DLo (sigh) > Brown > Stand pat > Clarkson.

Sorry to disagree, Z-Man, but i don’t like Doris Burke, i guess i find her annoying. Otoh, i love Monica McNutt and i was among the ones pushing for Becky to be the first female NBA coach with the Knicks. I don’t know where does that leave me, but it’s my opinion.

“In my case, Brogdon > Burks > DLo (sigh) > Brown > Stand pat > Clarkson.”

In my case, Brogdon > Burks > Stand pat >food poisoning>DLo>Clarkson.

“Sorry to disagree, Z-Man, but i don’t like Doris Burke, i guess i find her annoying.”

I’m telling my wife, and we might go to Portugal/Spain in the fall, so watch out!

I’m telling my wife, and we might go to Portugal/Spain in the fall, so watch out!

Oh man, you should have warned me sooner, is it too late for me to retract? 😀

I just ran the scenario by my lovely wife and she said, “Don’t apologize, it was fucking misogynistic!” Bless her heart!

I would very much be in the same camp as your wife then hahaha, I also tend to be very heavy handed when criticizing people for misogyny, racism, homophobia etc, because I believe it’s important to place lines. It’s better that one person feels ashamed and angry for being called out, than it is to tolerate discrimination and dismiss it. But as always, nuance and context have to be taken into consideration.

Even fully healthy we need some scoring and/or playmaking punch for the bench, so yeah, down 3-4 starters it’s going to look bad and our expectations should be tempered.

That said, I am going to repeat my petty grievance about the way we use fringe roster spots. I don’t get it, because Rose, Aller, et al. seem to understand the importance of asset utilization in every other context.

There are basically two ways you can use these spots: as a “farm system” of sorts, or to keep players you trust to some extent in the wings in the event that…3-4 of your starters get injured.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t get the impression anyone thinks we’re “developing” Duane Washington and Charlie Brown. I mean, Brown is 27 years-old. If he can’t help us on nights like last night he shouldn’t be on the team.

TNFH it’s certainly frustrating that our end of the bench mob is so lacking in potential. It would be nice if Leon actually makes some picks this year…

I’m also hoping that we keep a close eye on the waiver wire post-deadline…we could especially use an undersized pace-changing PG, someone like McConnell or Alvarado…any ideas on that front? Or maybe even a microwave-type scorer like Bones. Not that Thibs would ever use someone like that…

Our shooting issues last night were compounded by AD shutting down the paint. We had a lot of shots blocked or altered on top of several players just avoiding the paint altogether.

Hartenstein and Precious were equally terrible putting the ball in the basket too. Against non-AD level defenders it should be much easier even if you have 2-3 guys in the paint every play (not necessarily easy, but easier).

Hartenstein getting in foul trouble was another big issue. He’s very capable as an outlet in the high-post. By no means is Sims qualified to man that post (or really any in the NBA).

We could really use an Isaiah Roby-esque player at the 4 right now. He hasn’t been playing in Westchester, so I’m not sure if he’s injured or got cut. Maybe DaQuan Jeffries should get a call-up.

I think you have to blame Thibs for not ever using the end of the roster. We know that Fournier was a decent NBA player. Brown, Washington, Roby, etc have all played well in the G League and shown flashes in the NBA. That Thibs refuses to use them at all and instead, wears out his regular rotation players is his biggest failing

Having one Archie, even two, at the end of the bench is fine. But I agree we had more genuine prospects as the either the 13th/14th man or on a two-way.

The really disappointing part of last night was how poorly our defense played. You expect that rotation to struggle on offense, but a 121 DRtg isn’t acceptable.

first, i asked my wife and she thinks you are a fucking idiot…so there…

but really, you have no idea who i am and what i do on a daily basis and to point the internet finger at me and say because (like some other on here) i don’t like that announcer…i am a misogynist…and you can’t see how out of place that is and then run to your freaking wife to get an affirmation…nuff said…

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t get the impression anyone thinks we’re “developing” Duane Washington and Charlie Brown. I mean, Brown is 27 years-old. If he can’t help us on nights like last night he shouldn’t be on the team.

Duane isn’t quite 24, I’m not sure why we couldn’t be developing him. When you get to the end of the bench, that’s probably not far off from the level of prospect you’re getting when you’ve moved several of your recent picks/Dallas tanks you out of one.

    Charlie Brown… idk

Hartenstein getting in foul trouble was another big issue. He’s very capable as an outlet in the high-post. By no means is Sims qualified to man that post (or really any in the NBA).

This. But, even with iHeart out, we should still run the high post with Precious and even Sims (ducks). Point being: Let them make turnovers in February; they will be much better come April. Teams are gonna double Brunson. We all know it. So we should practice all options to counter. Hell, even Mitch should be studying the same play every day when he’s not playing Call of Duty on his couch.

The absurdly short rotations and doghousing of potentially useful players is the most frustrating part of the Thibs experience. Related to that is the fact that there’s a very narrow type of definition of a “Thibs player,” meaning a player he will actually play. So you might as well not even bother acquiring certain potentially useful players, because they will just rot on the bench.

This was similarly frustrating under Phil, when we constantly had to ask “but does he triangle” every time we were thinking of acquiring somebody. Having this narrow kind of definition of what makes a good player means that by definition you shrink the pool of players available to you.

We should keep in mind that we almost won.

For all the kvetching about the 13-15th men, most teams get blown out in this situation playing their 10th-12th guys.

Charlie Brown is on the roster. There are situations, such as last night, where he should play.

I know we are incredibly shorthanded but I think putting 3 non-shooters out there the majority of the time is a mistake.

McBride should have gotten more minutes and probably a bit more for Flynn as well. Hart is great but teams don’t respect him from 3 so when we put him with two other players who are zero threat from deep it is way too easy for teams to both double Brunson and clog the paint. Until we get healthy, when Precious is at the 4 we need to play McBride, Brunson, and DDV. Or more Flynn, or dust off Fournier, Washington Jr., even Archie. We need players they will at least think about not abandoning at the 3-point line.

Once OG and Grimes get back we add two more shooters and it probably moves players back to their natural roles. But the last couple of games have been unacceptable. Regardless of being shorthanded, we cannot have so little shooting out there ever.

As for pickups, Brogdon would be fine but not for Grimes and not for anything more than a protected 1st and Fournier. The Washington one, or maybe the worse of our two this year.

I like Tyus Jones even more, I think he would be a good fit and if he is truly available for 2 2nds that is worth it. If we are worried about the continuous soup we can just resign him this summer, since we would probably want to keep him long-term anyway. He is a great fit as a backup PG, is the right age, is a great shooter, and is a solid defender. Play him, McBride, and Grimes together.

A bench of Jones, McBride, Grimes, Hart, and iHart seems perfect long-term. If we are going to make a move let’s make one with more than just this year in mind.

“first, i asked my wife and she thinks you are a fucking idiot…so there…

That’s fine, pepper. My apology/explanation stands as is, accept it or don’t, no worries either way. As to my wife’s 2 cents, that’s just who she is, we disagree on many things, including this to a degree. But I’ll pass along your best wishes!

It’s better that one person feels ashamed and angry for being called out, than it is to tolerate discrimination and dismiss it.

Wait so you think not liking Doris Burke is intolerable discrimination? I mean, I kinda find her commentary to be a little overwhelming and often distracting.

One other thing to keep in mind: we did almost win.

Absolutely. LA’s top two guys — LeBron & AD — are/were just better than our top two — Jalen and Devo. On any given night we prolly lose that comparison, maybe even with Randle and OG on the floor.

On paper we might make that up with Team Basketball, but Reaves outplayed Hart; Deuce didn’t really show; we had no Grimes; yada, yada. I also don’t think E4 was the answer (speaking as someone who still owns a time share on Fournier Island).

The strangest thing (pollyanna-eye-test) may be that Flynn looked passable out there. Maybe he gets more burn going forward. And I remain pleasantly surprised by Precious. Guys here are clamoring for another creator. We’ll know in a few days. I’m mostly clamoring to see our full roster on the floor again.

One more thing, I think McBride is primarily a shooting guard and in that role, he is quite good. He is only two inches shorter than DDV with a longer wingspan and more standing reach.

We need to play him more next to Brunson or even with both DDV and Brunson especially when we are shorthanded. As a 3 and D SG, he is really good and should play more. As a backup PG, he is still very much a work in progress, and I understand people’s urge to upgrade.

I agree with Hubert that Hart should play a bit less. I am not as down on him, but he really needs to only play the 4. He can never be the 3rd best shooter on the court, ever. He does not fit next to Randle or Precious when we have a center on the court as well.

I wonder if they’re sitting Fournier because the deadline is so close. He normally gets burn when we’re shorthanded — not that he’s ever good when he does.

“I wonder if they’re sitting Fournier because the deadline is so close. He normally gets burn when we’re shorthanded — not that he’s ever good when he does.”

I wondered the same thing…and also whether Grimes might have played if this game was post-deadline….

But no strong feelings either way…

I wonder if they’re sitting Fournier because the deadline is so close.

Thinking the same, for injury protection, and especially b/c the last time Fournier did play, it prolly added a draft pick to what it will take to get rid of him 😉 — E4 v Wash — 6 min, 0/4, 0/3 from three, 2PF.

    My two cents on Doris:

Most announcers are terrible. The Jazz and the Hawks announcers are just two that come to mind, and those guys probably played ball themselves or whatever and are MUCH worse than Burke.

That said, I prefer not to listen to Burke, if possible, although I do think she has improved over the years.

Idk what the original comment was, so I’m not sure if it qualifies as Misogynist.

On a related note, because of my daughters, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my general preference for male singers (“old man music” as they call it) and wondering if I have a built-in or chosen misogyny there.

Ultimately, I think we often relate more to people who mirror us in multiple ways, which maybe includes preferring to hear someone of your natural or chosen sex. Idk just a thought, maybe relating to Burke or not.

He does not fit next to Randle or Precious when we have a center on the court as well.

Hart is such a unique player because he is a wing on defense but he’s actually an undersized center on offense. There’s a right way to use him and I love him when he’s effective but he needs to be deployed with tactical acumen.

We talked last night about how underdeveloped most teams’ depth players are but we have a legitimate professional wing in Fournier who probably should be getting minutes right now. At the very least he can stand in the corner and not be ignored.

As predicted, social media is praising the Lakers and says the league now knows how to stop Brunson and the Knicks.

I really should ignore the clickbait and dumb, lazy takes but it is all over the place now.

Last night was proof when OG returns he needs to start at PF until Randle is healthy, these lineups with Precious at PF is not sustainable on offense.

Lol, the Pacers tried doubling Brunson for large parts of last game and he dropped 40 on them. Putting up 36 & 10 isn’t exactly stopping him either.

Last night was proof when OG returns he needs to start at PF until Randle is healthy, these lineups with Precious at PF is not sustainable on offense.

They weren’t doubling off Precious every time Brunson touched the ball.

Putting up 36 & 10 isn’t exactly stopping him either.

And wait til Thibs unveils Precious in the pinch post 😉

“Ultimately, I think we often relate more to people who mirror us in multiple ways, which maybe includes preferring to hear someone of your natural or chosen sex. Idk just a thought, maybe relating to Burke or not.”

I think that in the world of men’s team sports in general, and NBA basketball in particular, it’s especially complicated. Obviously things have come far when it comes to sideline reporters and talking heads on pre-post-halftime shows, but for my entire lifetime, the play-by-play booth has been dominated by male voices to a far greater degree than pretty much any other journalism/communication venue. I think that there is a degree to which, as longtime fans, we are conditioned to hearing male voices. So someone like Doris has had to overcome that conditioning, and I think it is extremely hard to do because, unlike the sideline gigs, etc., it last the entire 2-3 hours of the game and is infused into every play.

This doesn’t mean that she should be beyond objective criticism or the whims of tastes and preferences. But I do think that until there is a preponderance of female play-by-play/commentators in the booths across the NBA, she’s deserving of some special grace and respect as a pioneer. And quite honestly and objectively, I don’t see how anyone can think that she is either “awful, terrible, etc.” or undeserving of or unqualified for co-announcing a NBA finals game, to the point that she would tarnish the experience of watching the game. But saying that holding that opinion is misogynistic is uncalled for, hence my apology.

Precious the past couple of games is shooting 9 for 27 including 0 for 6 from 3pt range. If you also include the Utah game where he did shoot well overall but was also 0 for 3 from 3pt range. In 3 starts he’s 0 for 9 from 3pt range, he’s spotting up from out there way too much.

Precious seems to have some NBA skills, important ones even! He’s an impressively stout defender and gets a lot of tough rebounds.

He’s also god awful at putting the ball in the rim from anywhere on the court, so yeah, he probably shouldn’t start when OG is back.

Precious is 21-46 since Randle & OG went down, including 1-10 from 3. His eFG% is 47%. That’s not good.

    Josh Hart 11-39, including 2-15 from 3. His eFG% is 30%. That’s worst-player-in-professional-basketball bad.

Mind you that doesn’t include all the open shots Hart passes up bc he’s got the yips, nor does it factor in that he’s putting up those terrible numbers even though no one is guarding him half the time!

It is abundantly clear who needs to go to the bench when OG comes back.

    Trading Grimes is very tricky

He is a wing that opposing teams must keep an eye on from 3. Trading him will only mess with the teams spacing more by giving thibs no other choice but to keep playing Hart

Not to mention that benching Hart instead of Precious allows OG to play his optimal position.

I personally think both Hart and Precious should go to the bench. Once OG and Grimes are back they should both start.

I don’t think OG suffers even a little by playing the 4.

Part of doubling off Hart could be the preference of keeping a bigger player near the basket to shotblock/rebound and a wing on the perimeter to stick with Brunson.

Precious also has the advantage of taking assisted shots right under the basket, which Hart doesn’t do nearly as often.

Last night’s game was irrelevant to what we should be trying to do this week before the trade deadline other than to make it more obvious than it already was what our needs are even while we were reeling off wins.

I personally think both Hart and Precious should go to the bench. Once OG and Grimes are back they should both start.

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the OG/Grimes combo defensively. I’m not sure how much we should use it while Randle is out but we should be using it.

Hart’s 3 point shot look so busted. He slingshots them like a kid who isn’t strong enough to reach the rim.

At least he can hit layups, unlike Precious. Precious seriously reminds me of Jared Jeffries with how shockingly uncoordinated his hands are.

“Precious seriously reminds me of Jared Jeffries with how shockingly uncoordinated his hands are.”

    Not a bad comp…

Josh could probably really use like 2 weeks off but unfortunately we’re stuck playing him a lot.

Fournier is shooting sub 30% on his last 130 3 point attempts, I’m not sure he needs to be guarded anymore. LIke, fuck it, throw him out there for a few games I don’t care but he might just be kinda shot.

The Mavs are not playing particularly well. They are no shoe in for the playoffs or even the play-in if they keep playing like this up. Kyrie is constantly hurt, Doncic has been in and out with injuries, and even though they have a better supporting cast than last year, they do not use it very well. You have to question Kidd. I’m actually hoping they make a sensible trade at the deadline because I’d hate for that pick to not come our way this off season. We know Cuban WILL tank to keep that pick if he’s not encouraged by what he’s seeing, especially if Doncic keeps ailing a bit.

He may be gone before we can try that.

I refuse to believe he can’t shoot anymore. I think on the rare occasions he gets in he’s pressing and throwing up shots he would normally not take if he was in the rotation instead of fighting for his NBA career. And of course, there’s always greater volatility with 3s.

“I’m actually hoping they make a sensible trade at the deadline because I’d hate for that pick to not come our way this off season. We know Cuban WILL tank to keep that pick if he’s not encouraged by what he’s seeing, especially if Doncic keeps ailing a bit.”

Wouldn’t he run the risk of Doncic demanding a trade? Luka did not seem all that amused at the end of last year…if they “purposely” miss the playoffs again, I think he’ll be very, very upset.

Brunson and Josh Hart are starting a podcast together, called The Roommates Show. Whatever flaws Hart has on the court, he and Brunson as a comedy duo are delightful. Looking forward to this.

Wouldn’t he run the risk of Doncic demanding a trade?

I’ve already heard rumors he’s privately not happy playing with Kyrie but there’s no trade market for Kyrie.

They have a mess over there. They keep overpaying, selling low, and generally behaving desperately trying to keep him happy. Cuban has been horrible.

He apparently doesn’t like playing with almost anyone unless all they do is stand outside and shoot 3s or occasionally cut for a lob while he does everything else…except play defense. 🙂

They need to make a smart move and get their act together or he could be available eventually. In the mean time we need that pick!

If there was any time to give Fournier some run, it’s now. We’re at risk of running the patchwork rotation of 7 guys into the ground as it is. Maybe we’ll lose a game or two while Fournier knocks the rust off, but the alternative is that the 7 guys run out of gas and we lose games anyway.

Feels like we’ve had terrible injury luck but the Grizzlies are playing the Celtics with 13 guys unavailable due to injury

Embiid having surgery and will be out an extended period of time, looks like the Knicks will have homecourt advantage in the 1st rd.

Embiid is getting surgery. Poor dude can’t stay healthy, he was really playing incredible ball this year

It’s a shame, both for him and for the NBA. That said, I’m sure glad we didn’t trade all of our assets and all of our picks for him. Hopefully he stays in Philly until either the price comes way down or someone else pays it.

bad: clueless thibs was holding RJ back
good: smart thibs was the only one who knew how to use IQ

I wonder if IQ is just plain miserable in Toronto. Maybe he should just take the qualifying offer and control his destiny…

Embiid sat out the game vs Denver then rushed back after backlash and getting closer to that 65 game limit to qualify for MVP…now out for a while not a good look for the league

“Embiid sat out the game vs Denver then rushed back after backlash and getting closer to that 65 game limit to qualify for MVP…now out for a while not a good look for the league”

Or alternatively, not a good look for Embiid if he put chasing an MVP award over his taking care of his health…

To be fair, the Embiid injury seemed to be a bit freaky, he was on the floor going for a loose ball and a guy fell backwards onto his knee. Could have happened to anyone, and probably had nothing to do with overuse.

I like Monica a lot. I like Sarah Kustok.

And I do think she is knowledgeable and well prepared. She isn’t my cup of tea is all.

Embiid before Kuminga fell on his knee looked awful in that game..he couldn’t move at all and looked stiff. I was wondering why the Sixers were still pushing him during the game

Monica is a star, 100%. In a few years she’ll be a national phenomenon.

Also, as I said in the game thread last night, Doris on the radio is still as great as ever. I just don’t like how she’s watered down her style on TV to appeal to general audiences.

I wonder if the Rockets will cash out on Jalen Greens potential, I’m not really a fan of his game and some team could he willing to pay up

I grew up listening to Suzyn Waldman call Yankees games on WPIX (I think), way back in the mid-90s. It seemed very natural. So natural, in fact, that I grew up oblivious that the patriarchy was even a thing in this world.

that’s interesting to hear you mention the purposeful transition in style for Doris, Doug…

i think it was you whom mentioned Doris 2019 and Doris 2024 were different…

i don’t really enjoy that fanboy style of broadcasting…way too sugary…

kind of like the “always” negative/critical style can be tedious…

it is what makes clyde so special…how to critique without being a dick…

a lesson i too would like to learn…

Brogdon didn’t play for Portland tonight (listed as a knee injury). He is injury-prone but maybe something brewing? It can’t be a coincidence Leon and crew made peace with Klutch recently…

Pointless to complain about it, but it’s really pissing me off how coverage of the Knicks/Lakers is completely plotting the fact that more than half the (meaningful) roster is injured and out. All those pieces about your Vanderbilt is so important to the Lakers defense blah blah. Not a word about OG. Then I just saw the Athletic article – Lakers stun red hot Knicks. Are you kidding me??? We started Precious Achiuwa, Josh Hart, and Isaiah Hartenstein!! No one was stunned! It’s so, so irritating.

These people got to get clicks somehow

Nothing is based on actual analysis anymore
