The idea of a Brunson/Murray backcourt is really intriguing. In general, Brunson has done great when he’s playing with a second PG (or, depending on how you want to classify Luka, with a wing who handles the ball a ton). Murray is bigger than IQ, and a better one-on-one/point-of-attack defender, which takes away both of the excuses we apparently use for not just starting Quickley. And while he’s more expensive than IQ now, the gap wouldn’t be that wide once IQ gets his new contract next summer.
Even with Murray, we’d still need a better big wing than RJ. But depending on what the asset cost is beyond Quickley himself, I could be very into this.
I’m looking at Murray’s numbers and I just don’t see it. That one season in San Antonio stands out like a sore thumb, with Pop getting the absolute most out of him on a shitty team. Doesn’t seem like you can get that version of Murray in different circumstances, which is why Atlanta wants to bail.
I want the ball in Brunson’s hands and I don’t want Murray in an off ball role. So it’s a pass for me.
I’d rather have IQ, and I suspect this is all about the two extra inches Murray has over him. Thibs would trust a 6’5” guard next to Brunson who destroys the offensive spacing but he’d die before playing a 6’3” guard who makes the team better on both sides.
I’m still trying to determine if what we’re seeing from DDV is for real. The dude is killing it on both ends as a starter. Seems like Murray is not much of a shooter, so that would be another guy alongside Brunson that doesn’t space the floor. So on second thought, I’d pass…and just keep DDV and extend IQ.
murray’s offensive #s are definitely depressed playing with trae. he’s 30 and 10 per 100 on atl ex trae since the trade, which is pretty rarified air (vs. 25 and 6 with trae). on the other hand, if you’re expecting the dejounte murray defensive reputation from pre-injury spurs years when he looked like a perennial all-defense guy and you don’t watch the hawks, you’re in for a surprise. he used to slither around picks and now he just doesn’t, relying on his come from behind chops (which are still good, but not what they were and don’t make up for giving up the advantage so easily so often) instead. he’s still very disruptive in the passing lanes, but he takes a lot of bad risks and gets beat backdoor a lot. he also isn’t the maniacal defensive rebounder he used to be, and it doesn’t seem to be a scheme or teammate thing.
Yeah, pt, I might still be baking in some PTSD from the game on 11/2/2022 where he singlehandedly destroyed the Knicks at MSG…36 points, 5-12 from 3, 9 assists and 5 steals plus some clutch midrangers to ice the game iirc. He then got hurt in the opening minutes of the next game we played them and we beat them easily. Then he went on to kick our asses again on 1/20/2023…29 efficient points, 12 assists, 3 steals. At that point I recall a lot of folks here sort of wondering why we didn’t make a move for him when SA made him available.
But since then he hasn’t done anything against us…nor mostly anyone else.
DDV is probably shooting a bit over his head, but he’s a good shooter either way. 40% on 3s long term seems doable coming into his peak as long as the shot election remains good. I’m less convinced he’s a plus defender. He’s aggressive and gets impactful steals which have been helping us, but other than that I don’t see especially good defense.
Obviously the Knicks are looking for a big ball handler/defender to put next to Brunson (first Jrue, now Murray), so I’m guessing they actually want their offense to look less ugly, which is nice to know. I’m not sure if there are other options besides those two, but they should be careful not to negatively affect their 3pt shooting (DDV has been fire from 3 lately). I’m still not sure what RJ offers to this team that is so damn valuable, but maybe it will be revealed to me eventually if I just have faith…
I’d rather have Quickley than Murray if that’s the choice.
Maybe I’m wrong here, but it seems like it’s kind of impossible to fake your way to a 40 AST% season. That season where Dejounte averaged 9 assists per game looks like a massive outlier on his stat sheet, but he DID have a season where he was that effective as a passer. Then he was paired with Trae Young and that was the end of him as a true lead guard.
I think that his passing ability is an untapped skill, but it’s not like he’s going to be revealing that here in this iso-heavy offense.
Seems like Toronto or Miami could use DeJounte more than us…
I prefer keeping IQ
It’s a real problem we have here, though: If IQ isn’t starting, he’s probably not worth $25 mil per plus he probably feels he deserves to be a starter… But Thibs won’t start him.
Thibs is obviously aware of these contract issues, and I get that he doesn’t want to make on-court moves based on them, but he also has to work with Leon somewhat with an eye toward the future.
Plus, IQ plays well with Brunson! It’s one of our best lineups!
I personally think that too much is being made of the IQ starting vs. being a 6th man stuff. It’s more about his total minutes than whether he starts or not. Seems like he should be up at the 28-30 minute mark rather than just 24.
It’s interesting is that he is putting up the same per game numbers as last year in 5 less minutes….getting the same amount of shots up, hitting them at nearly identical percentages…
The thing is, DDV is just a bigger, more physical player than IQ and is currently shooting the lights out from 3, which is sorely needed in the starting lineup. I think it’s great that IQ comes in fresh for Brunson and can just get into #1 on-ball option mode from the get-go…rather than playing 4th fiddle behind Brunson, Julius, and RJ and then transitioning into backup PG after 8-10 minutes of running his ass off.
It’s not ideal but I see the logic in it. As it stands, he’s playing 24 out of the last 40 minutes or so, and more when he has it going.
I think he’s worth the $25 million, independent of his role. It’s a market-value deal or better than can be moved in a big consolidation trade, or that would justify an expanded role if he survives such a trade.
Murray’s advanced numbers are not great. Is he really that good?
It’s honestly a little discouraging to even hear this kinda stuff. Doesn’t seem like the right direction at all.
Atlanta would immediately do what Thibs is too stubborn to do, i.e. play IQ next to a lead guard. He & Trae would light it up, and Atlanta’s problem would become our problem.
And so, another Jaylen Martin era comes to an end.
Glad Skapi’s on board.
