2023-24 Game Thread: Knicks @ Nets (East Coast Return Opener, which is not a thing)

It’s kind of douchey having their first game back on the East Coast be on the road, right?

After a successful tough West Coast trip, the Knicks have to be lookin forward to a mediocre Nets team.

Let’s go, Knicks!

Cam Thomas will probably have a huge game because that would maximize Knickerblogger discourse chaos

These Nets jerseys are fucking hideous. What the fuck was anyone thinking with them?

Trying to figure out how to get RJ to never shoot unless it’s a foul shot…

I wholeheartedly thank Taj Gibson for his service but there has got to be a more creative solution than rousting the guy from his couch when a couple of bigs get hurt

Brooklynettes not as good as the Knicks City Dancers, but they’re the second best I’ve seen (stuck on Nets announcers due to Fubo…). Probably due to the good choreographers in NYC as anything.

The good news is that the Nets have no one who can guard Randle… the bad news is that they have 10 different guys who can guard our wings and guards.

What’s up with IQ suddenly forgetting he’s allowed to pass the ball?

The lane was definitely clogged for RJ there but it was with 3 Nets guys and 0 Knicks guys

It’s zero points but it sure shows a lot of moxie

i’m probably in the minority, but i think bringing in taj was a good move…

his familiarity with thibs helps him fit in smoothly and easily…

he’s totally adequate as the backup center…

this is gonna be one of those painfully close games to watch…

it’s gonna be a tough night, stay rock steady kb’ers…

Breen keeps referring to Mikal Bridges as the Nets promising young player. The guy is Brunson’s age and older than 3/5 of the Knicks’ starting lineup!

Randle is learning the Obi leak out. Hope it doesn’t hurt his rebounding. IQ would fit nicely with Brooklyn, if they don’t land Mitchell.

Randle is a very good basketball player.

Barrett is a very good foul shooter.

I will not stand for Mike Breen slander!

LOL!! It’s not Breen’s fault. It’s just the stupid from Wally is wafting over Mike and making his brain a little fuzzy. Doesn’t everyone here feel a little dumber after listening to Wally for a whole game? 😉

I also blame Wally.

I really like Mikal, but it’s not like he’s a prospect. He is what he is at this point.

I don’t mind bringing in Taj. I agree he’s useful and knows our system. But I think it’s an indictment of the Knicks filling out the back end of their roster with players like Windler who aren’t so young anymore and didn’t catch on with other NBA teams. He wasn’t good enough to be a backup’s backup so why have him? Untested youngsters who be developed would be a better use of a roster spot.

Divo continues to impress. Jumping the passing lane, going to the far side of the rim for the layup to avoid getting blocked. He’s quick and has springs. Plus he shoots threes.

Friend of mine teaches 5th grade in Brooklyn and one of his students-who thinks Cam Thomas is a sure fire future hall of famer-is at the game tonight hoping to get Cam’s autograph. At least he’s seen some buckets

Yeah I didn’t mean that as a slight against Taj, who shows up and plays professionally. It’s more of a generalized complaint about the hopelessness of the back end of the roster. Get some guys with at least a tiny chance of some upside! Take a flyer on a busted lotto pick or something. We have like six victory cigars hanging around at the back of the roster.

breen and wally mentioned the arena noise/sound being constant and way too loud…

i’m at home and i concur…turn it down and stop trying so hard to hype stuff up…

for the record JK, from what i notice, you are pretty much always reasonable, and much more often than not, correct in your observations…

if anything, maybe you’re a little too fair and reasonable…i like fiesty jk, go ahead, let it all hang out 🙃

RJ is such a slog to watch. You knew there was no chance he would pass as soon as he got that ball.

Meanwhile, if our pal RJ played every game like this, it would be fine. Not great, maybe only slightly better than replacement player, but that is enough for now.

Man DDV was really a nice pickup. Two way player, plays aggressively and fearlessly. Guy can ball

Meanwhile, Philly is pretty damn impressive. Pulling away from Minny – that’s a good team.

Yeah Philly is a serious title contender. They have enough chrome and leather in Embiid and Maxey, and traded Harden for surprisingly useful nuts and bolts. They’re a handful.

DFS so impressive with that dunk, such power, then Jalen just kind of waltzes down the lane and tosses it in

I forgot about Ben Simmons lol

The Nets have him, Dennis Smith Jr (who’s actually an okay player now) and another useful player hurt right now…

Depsite going all in a couple of times during the last decade – and failing spectacularly – they still have a fairly decent roster…

The Nets aren’t bad. They certainly aren’t good, but considering all their crazy move making it’s kind of impressive

I don’t think they are the favorite to win it all but I love the value I got on them to win it all after watching the first couple of games and seeing that Maxey was ready to be #2.

Magic lost again, that’s nice. It would be really good if we could at least split with the Bucks

Knicks now just 1/2 game behind the overrated will be a play-in team Orlando Magic.

I need to watch them more before I write them off. As said, I predicted them to finish in the play-in, so their success has been a surprise. But they may be more ready than I thought if they can play D.

Besides, victory laps will be meaningless after we lose the next 2 to the Bucks.

Knicks are clearly better than the Nets and other lower to mid-level EC teams, and it showed again tonight. However, it is the next two games that will show us how much better, how high we can aim. At the very least, we should go 1-1. We already lost five consecutive games to the Bucks and Celts, the two teams we want to measure up to.

i love the new eye massager thing i got off of qvc, it’s got like air compression and vibration around the temple, and a cooling feature across each eye/eyelid…

love is such a splendid thing…

That’s why the Utah loss was such a shocker, and also why I picked them to win 53 games. They just don’t lose to mediocre/bad teams. It’s a nice treat to know they’ll almost certainly win every game against a mediocre/bad team.

Even the great teams out there today repeatedly take their pedal off the gas against mediocre/bad teams, so you see the Celtics lose to, like, the Hornets or whatever.

Not the Knicks, though.

We are running out of things to complain about. We may need a thread where we all complain about having nothing to complain about.

if we lose the next two games, it means next to nothing…the Bucks aer better than us, so whatever. A win would be nice, but we’re supposed to lose.

As long as we don’t show the same defensive pathologies that were on display the last few weeks until the Lakers game. How can on feel good if the Bucks blow us out twice in MSG with 20+ 3-pointers each time?

Come on Z-man! At some point we gotta beat these teams. Fuck the bucks!

Gotta say, we’ll see how they stack up against the bucks but iHart plus DDV in the starting line up gives that unit some extra passing and a more up tempo style that might be good for us. Grimes is better off the bench cause there’s less pressure on him and I think IQ can look to get him more involved. If they do well like this I could see Mitch being relegated to the bench permanently. His defense and offensive rebounding is elite but you don’t lose that much with iHart and iHart’s offense and passing is so much better. Plus, you know, free throws.

We are running out of things to complain about.

Well, now they’re saying Mitch will be out for the rest of the year, and we are applying for a player exception… so…

Does applying for the exception mean Mitch cannot return? Heartbreaking. My favorite Knick.

Who is the best rim protector, offensive rebounder and screen setter that my be available for ~ two second round picks?

“Does applying for the exception mean Mitch cannot return?”

From what I understand, teams can apply for the exception if they think the player is very likely to miss the entire season, then the NBA will designate a doctor to look into the injury and determine if that’s true, and if he does, then the exception is granted.

So while this is not a guarantee per se that Mitch is done for the season, I’d say it’s very, very likely that that’s the case, otherwise the Knicks wouldn’t even bother applying for it just to be rejected.

Very sad news and a big loss, let’s see if they can find at least a decent backup for Hart with this.

Who is the best rim protector, offensive rebounder and screen setter that my be available for ~ two second round picks?

Maybe Andre Drummond?

Could probably get Capela off the Hawks but he’s on big money for next year. idk, Hart is a very nice player himself, we really just need to get a solid backup-Sims and Taj aren’t really what you want

Boogie Cousins had a pretty good 2020-21 season and may have something left in the tank… and wouldn’t cost us anything.

I bet they just try to wait it out with Taj for ~ two weeks till Simms get healthy and then give him another look at relieving iHart but against back ups this time.

Damn, Damn, Damn!

I’m in favor of rolling with Sims. It’s a good time to evaluate him to see if he can make it, or if we need to move on. Nate Knight is also still available. So is Noel.

I read that he was having an issue before the injury game. I wonder if playing with an undiagnosed injury made it worse?

Honestly, I don’t think we are going to lose that much in the starting lineup, but we need a better quality backup than Sims or Taj. What if I-Hart misses games. We need someone.

Yeah, you can still return after a team has asked for an injury exemption, but it’s extremely unlikely.

Well, that’s very unfortunate.

I read that he was having an issue before the injury game. I wonder if playing with an undiagnosed injury made it worse?

Whether he was or not, he definitely was hurt in the game he came back and played a whole half on an injury now apparently so bad he’s going to miss the rest of the season, soo….not good.

I initially came on to more or less echo Brian by saying how really F’ing nice it that this team is no longer a clown show but the Mitch news has me down- I’m glad his coach is with him because it’s got to really suck for him given how well he was playing. Unless Noel really rubbed people here the wrong way you have to think they’d bring him back since he already knows the system.

KP 24 points, 9 rebounds, 6 blocks in 29 minutes.

7/11; 3/4; 7/8

He played well with Melo, Beal and now Tatum and Brown. Celtics fans love him. His teammates love him. But he took all the blame for it not working out with the ball hog that kept looking him off in Dallas. 🤣🤣🤣

There’s no telling how good he would be if he didn’t miss all that development time and lose a little athleticism with serious injuries.

And he hobbled off the court again tonight with an ankle injury.

It’s too bad the injured player exception is so high. I was hoping it would be exactly 20% of Mitch’s salary, for the sake of science.

Although the entire injury scenario sounded fishy from the start. The Knicks suck at being straightforward with the public/media about injury specifics. But those non-contact/non-incident injuries that result in surgery never seem to have a short timeline. It also raises questions about whether Mitch’s feet and ankles are tolerating his weight gain. It’s too early to chalk him up as injury-prone, but it would be nice to see him play 2000 minutes in a season…

Obviously a healthy version of Nerlens would be a perfect fit for the backup role, but he has played a total of 195 minutes in the NBA since leaving the Knicks so it’s doubtful that he is either healthy or in shape enough to be anything close to what he was in 2020-21. He is only 29, though.

Detroit has a bunch of bigs, any one of them would probably help. Maybe Thibs could fix James Wiseman…
