    Congrats!

    Re the last, short thread:

Thinking back on yesterday, I think my HDA (High Degree of Annoyance) at Randle was based on (foolishly) watching him play defense, accent on the word ‘play’ — lazy close-outs after the shot goes up, turnstile behavior on drives, giving up on shots that bounce out thus giving the other team easily snatched rebounds, etc.

He was a massive plus on offense, but man was he putrid on D.

The Platonic Ideal of Randle (and Barrett) would make the Knicks an actual contender, in my book. I just don’t know if it’s possible to get them both to that level, much less simultaneously, for any length of time. We’ve seen it for Randle for long stretches, then not. We’ve seen it for Barrett for short stretches, then not.

It’s frustrating — I don’t feel that way about JHart, say, because he plays to what he is, and does it pretty well. Barrett and Randle run hot and cold.

    IT’S ALIVE!!!!!!

    🙂

I want RJ back on his early season PEDa.

It’s amazing the Pistons are 2-17

According to Amick, if DeRozan is traded, he wants to go to one of two teams: the Heat or the Knicks.

    What’s he worth?

    I’d say about 15 RJs.

You beat me to it, Bernie. Here’s the full story, btw:
    https://theathletic.com/5104223/2023/12/01/nba-trade-rumors-in-season-tournament-schedule/

I’m really wary of DeRozan, whose value at this stage of his career is almost entirely his skill with the ball in his hands, and inside the arc, at that. Yes, he is better than Bad RJ, but Good RJ does more things that this team needs. And if we’re looking for an upgrade, there have to be better fits out there then DeRozan.

DeRozan probably has a couple of good years left in him. I might do RJ and a pick or two for DeRozan, but I don’t think the Knicks would. Would Grimes, Fournier, and picks work cap wise? I would not include IQ under any circumstances.

Alan, actually ess-dog beat you to it (2 threads(!!) ago but only about an hour ago). I was too lazy to use the quote button so my only contribution is the 15 RJs.

Just watched, some random game-related thoughts:

    – The story about Mitch and his HS coach is fantastic, same with Monty’s words on Thibs.
I can’t say a bad word about the current Knicks’ players and coaches as human beings, they’re easy to root for.
Basketball opinions are a different matter and to me they’re never personal.

    – The Pistons went winless for a full month (0-16 in november). Between injuries to their “supposed” stabilizing veterans (Bogdanovic, Joe Harris, Monte Morris) and Monty’s “fizdalian” methods with the youngsters, they’re a hot mess, we did avoid a very embarrassing loss.

    – Are we sure Cade is such a bad player? I understand the “ehi, he was the number one pick” argument, but we’ve seen much worse. Forget about the first-pick stigma, would you swap him for RJ? I’d do it…
He’s 22 (15 months younger than RJ), plays the most difficult position in the game and needs a good coach and some team stability.

    – One of the rare stinkers of the season for IQ, but it was funny after the 25M dollars rumors. 🙂

    – Can you believe Grimes has gone from promising youngster to “kid on the milk carton” in less than 20 games?

    – Game thread qoute of the day, thanks to KBA:

Yeah, no passing to speak of tonight as far as I could tell (only saw second half). On such nights Julius scores all ISO and his line can sneak up on you.

As in previous seasons, it’s hard to tell whether the ugliness necessitates Randle scoring like that or if him scoring like that makes for such ugly basketball. 🙃

I can only say… nah, it’s not so hard 😉

    – Only 2 games left before my vesuvian-lava hot takes… 😀 😀 😀

    Standing ovation Raven 😀

I’m tempted by DeRozan, but he’s also 34 and his numbers are down this year despite shooting much better from 3 than normal.

His midrange numbers are way down and that could be fluky, so he could bounce back to his usual .590+ TS% but it’s definitely risky.

If they blow it up, I’d be interested in Caruso even though we already have 4,395 small wings/guards. His defense is on another level. Milwaukee should really go all out to try and get him though

Just needs to happen for about 8 weeks in April/May/June

I’d post more, but I get logged out pretty much every thread. Oy.

Anyway, as for Caruso, I spent a lot of time watching DDV last few games, and he doesn’t seem much below Caruso. Admittedly I don’t see a lot of the Bulls, but DV’s lateral quickness is really impressive, and he’s always anticipating moves very well, heading them off, redirecting them, picking off passes…I would have been into the idea of Caruso, but kind of feel we have a good enough approximation?

Yeah, even if Caruso is a better defender than DDV or Hart, we just have so much of that kind of player. Get me someone who’s at least 6’7″, and preferably an inch or two taller, who can shoot 3s and defend either forward spot without a worry about being at a significant size deficit.

Grimes needs to watch DDV on the court and try to emulate him especially offensively. DDV is constantly on the move and has no hesitation whatsoever when shooting 3pters. Thibs even mentioned it after the game praising DDV for never hesitating to shoot. Granted at times it feels like he forces up and rushes some 3pters but I’d rather have a player like that than whatever the hell Grimes has become offensively.

i’ve been reluctant to do this historically because i vaguely support allowing the free flowing chaos of the human spirit unshackled egress to form its own estuaries, but if anyone else suggests trading for derozan i may have to use my universal delete button

On Grimes, my ignorant eye test tells me he needs to watch Brunson and Hart as much as DeVo. Grimes is always rushing — he needs to try cruising into the paint. The kid is super quick, but it almost feels thoughtless — he sees the close-out coming, puts his head down and slams on the gas, finds himself in a bad place, and throws the ball back out. You watch Brunson and Hart, they’re never in a hurry until they see their opening — THEN they go. It feels like Grimes is going too fast to see openings.

The only players from Chicago I would even be interested in are Caruso and Ball. Ball’s career may be over and Caruso would just add to the glut we have at SG/SF. LaVine and DeRozan are pretty hard “no” for me.

We’re already quite a good defensive team, and not a fluky defensive team either. We’re generating lots of turnovers this year, rebounding the hell out of the ball and committing very few fouls. We’re the #4 defense and that isn’t driven by ISM this time. That defensive rating is even more impressive when you consider how hard we crash the offensive boards.

Our problem is the same as it has been for what seems like forever: poor eFG%. I’d love to see that change in my lifetime, because it seems like year after year after year for decades now the Knicks have a terrible team eFG%.

The last time the Knicks had an above average team eFG% was Mike Woodson’s last season here. It would be nice to someday be good at throwing the ball in the basket.

“We’re the #4 defense and that isn’t driven by ISM this time.”

…nor was it any other time.

It’s hard to have a good eFG% when you are going 4 on 5, and sometimes 3 on 5 on every possession. But Mitch does provide lots of do-overs, so there’s that…

BTW his two FTs last night were my personal highlight of game, especially the second one, which looked, well, like a FT. Maybe his old HS coach talked some cajun creole FT shootin’ wisdom to him over a mess of Jambalaya…

Fournier, Grimes and a pick for Caruso?

Would trade 2 SG’s for one much better SG. We’d still have a glut there but we’d upgrade the starting SG spot significantly and no longer have hoodie Fournier on the bench.

    A few wrestling stories.

    1. I was at Sunnyside Garden with my good friend Joe. I was probably somewhere around 10-13 years old at the time. There was a heel wrestler at the time called the Black Demon. He wore a black mask. All the fans were trying to figure out who he was. Joe and I knew where the wrestler exit was out of Sunnyside Garden. So we waited there for him figuring we could finally find out who it was. Out came the Black Demon in street clothes, but still in his mask. We casually followed him up the street to Queens Blvd and he kept the mask on. We followed him along Queens Blvd for a long time and he kept the mask on. People were looking at him like he was a nut. We followed him to the 7 train and he went up to the train station WITH THE MASK ON! We never figured it out.

    2. Same time period we were waiting outside the same exit on a big card trying to get autographs. Chief Jay Strongboy wrestled, Pedro Morales was there, Beautiful Bobby, Karl Goch and a bunch of other big names at the time. Up pulled this giant gold Cadillac. Inside was Gorilla Monsoon. He was coming to pick up one of the other wrestlers. Gorilla Monsoon was bigger than life and terrifying in the ring. He was a big man, used to fight handicap matches (2 wrestlers against him), and was dominating at the time. He was a very scary man. All the kids surrounded his car and would not let him go. They were pleading for autographs. He was blowing his horn, but the kids would not move. Finally, he got out of the car, raised his arms, and let out a signature Godzilla like roar like he was in character. Kids were yelling and screaming scattering and running away. It was hysterical. Someone got in his Caddy, he drove off and was laughing as he drove by.

    3. Joe somehow found out where Pedro Morales lived in Queens. He was world champion at the time and wildly popular. We went to his apartment building, snuck in with another tenant, and rang his bell. His girlfriend answered and said he was sleeping and we should come back later. We went back a few times and rang the bell. No one answered. Finally, we rang the bell and heard Pedro yelling and screaming in Spanish in the background. His girlfriend answered gave us 2 autographed pictures and said “Please don’t come back. He desperately needs rest for another show”.

It would be nice to someday be good at throwing the ball in the basket.

…and for that reason, I don’t hate the idea of a DDR rental in a purely hypothetical scenario in which the cost was negligible. Like Fournier/small salary filler in Jeffries/one of the bad protected picks.

The bidding will almost certainly go higher and I am truly out on anything more than that, so this is probably academic. He is old and there are worrying signs in the early numbers.

But I mean, if we’re talking about one of those protected picks that probably won’t convey, let’s see if we can have some fun this year. We could even bring him off the bench and finally start Quickley. This would of course fully remove someone from the rotation, and at this point the clearest candidate would be Grimes so djphan could collect his monopoly money.

It’s amazing the Pistons are 2-17

What’s more amazing is that some people believe the protected first we got from them is actually going to be a first round pick.

I just expressed pessimism about that pick, but 2027 is a long time from now. I’m not ruling out that the Pistons can manage to not be in the bottom 10 by 2026-2027, after probably getting a top-4 pick this year.

Prove the Knickerblogger haters wrong, Cade!

Strat, I admit I was dreading a pro wrestling thread, but those were pretty good stories. Thanks.

Meanwhile Indiana is in a bit of a funk. Maybe they should try playing defense from time to time…

Every time I talk about how I hyped up Haliburton or Sengun, remember that I watched five minutes of Scoot highlights and called him a consensus #2

Wandered past a LaVine to Lakers mention and it does make some sense. Gives them a dynamic scoring wing, which they don’t have, and who cares that he’s a hugely expensive prima donna with injury risks, as the Lakers have about six months left to win something before they have to set fire to the whole thing.

Him or DDR to the Knicks, I vote nah.

Top shelf stories Strat. Thank you very much for sharing.

I’m low key hooked when the folks at KB start telling stories of their childhood.

Made all the more fascinating that they’re taking place around the city.

May we all have another please?

Zion is good. It’s not the guys who perform just like they projected in college but underwhelm who bother me.

It’s the guys who are no shows.

All I ever saw with Scoot was a workout video where he was doing drills with his shirt off and looking just absurdly ripped. I am putting that into the Red Flag folder next to 3-on-3 and Ugly Girlfriend.

Yeah I don’t really want DeRozan either. I don’t really want anyone TBH. I do like hte idea of some trade deadline Hart like moves where we get a good/real back up PF and a good/real back up PG (to move IQ to the starting line up). But the more I think about it, those types of mezzanine moves are the ones I would be inclined to do. Just make us a super deep complete 10 person squad with a true starter and back up at each position.

Let’s put some nice cup holders and cushions in those mezzanine seats.

Julius is questionable for tonight’s game due to knee inflammation.
Our roster is build around him and Toronto’s lenght usually gives us problems even with him, bad news if he’d miss the game.

It’s fine, we’d never construct our roster such that we have no viable alternative if the guy whose injury derailed our last playoff run has to miss time.

Certainly wouldn’t trade a serviceable backup to that guy for next to nothing…

I’m looking forward to seeing OG in action against us tonight. I don’t get to see many Raptors games. I’m hoping he looks good but we figure out a way to get the win.

According to B-R, Obi currently leads the NBA in 2p% at .767.

Too bad we don’t have a backup PF with some size for occasions like these.

May we all have another please?

    Bother Love,

    Those were my best stories.

The only thing I can add is faint memories of being at my 4′ 10″ Sicilian grandmother’s house as a boy and her screaming in Italian and shaking her fist at the TV if Bruno Sammartino was fighting and someone was temporarily getting the best of him.

As a kid I used to watch some Lucha Libre on UHF channel 47 from time to time…you had to constantly fiddle with the circular antenna on the back of the TV to get something close to visible reception. Bruno Sammartino, Crusher Verdu, Haystacks Calhoun, The Fabulous Moolah, Baron Scicluna, Larry Zbyszko, Stan the Man Stasiak, The Shiek, Mr. Fuji, Ivan Koloff, Bobo Brazil, George The Animal Steele, Professor Tanaka, Sargeant Slaughter, Lou Albano and the Wild Samoans, and of course, Superstar Billy Graham…who I saw up close near the ticket booth at the premier of Apocalypse Now. Talk about juiced!

I liked it but never was interested in seeing it live and didn’t get into the whole WWE/Wreslemania thing.

It’s fine, we’d never construct our roster such that we have no viable alternative if the guy whose injury derailed our last playoff run has to miss time.

Pags, admire the bravado but you are a bit exposed here. Kudos if a Toronto loss because of no Julius, but take the L (and perhaps consider trolling somewhere else) if the Knicks win.

“Don’t worry. Hart will shift to PF from his current position of “winner”.”

Yeah, can you believe that guy Steve Kerr called him that?

“According to B-R, Obi currently leads the NBA in 2p% at .767.”

Not bad for a 6’9″ starting PF averaging 3 RPG…but hey, why should you worry about rebounds when you hardly ever miss?

Pags, admire the bravado but you are a bit exposed here. Kudos if a Toronto loss because of no Julius, but take the L (and perhaps consider trolling somewhere else).

Happy to take an L at any time, that’s a big part of what we do here as Knick fans.

However, why am I exposed exactly? I’m not the only one unhappy with the lack of foresight evident in building a roster with no viable backup to our extremely erratic starting PF… are the multiple other posters recognizing that (as well as Obi’s usefulness to IND) also trolling?

    Z-Man

Some great names in that wrestling list. I remember most of them.

George “the Animal” Steel eating the turnbuckle was always fun. He was supposedly also a school teacher.

Professor Tanaka throwing salt into his opponents eyes was a good one.

I remember a Battle Royale where a whole bunch of guys teamed up against Haystacks Calhoun and threw him out of ring because he was too heavy for any one guy to lift him. lmao

I can’t remember what I ate for breakfast, but those memories don’t seem to fade.

I was a big fan of Mil Máscaras.

According to B-R, Obi currently leads the NBA in 2p% at .767.

His three-point shooting is rounding into form as well, after shooting 22.2% over his first 8 games he has shot 36.8% over his last 9. Overall all of his stats have looked better of late (21.6 pts/36 – 71.1% efg% over that time as well). His minutes are also increasing and he is up to almost 30 minutes a game over the last 7 games.

He is by no means a complete player but he is certainly showing that when used right he is an extremely efficient and effective scorer even at higher usages. It seems that might be something we could use, especially with Randle looking to miss some time and being less effective overall.

But luckily we have 5 SGs in the rotation instead. Who needs forwards these days? SGs and centers are all this team needs.

My mom didn’t appreciate my WWE viewing habits, but eventually came around to rewarding me with figurines for good grades at PS 199. They’re still in a box somewhere in her apartment.

All my WWE consumption happened in an era you all probably deem well past the prime, and probably correctly so. My guys were John Cena (happy he’s made it somewhat big), Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero (RIP), Paul London, the Big Show, Booker T, and some others.

Eventually it all became too kitschy and weird for me, but I admire the staying power.

I genuinely have no idea what the plan is sans Randle but he should 100% not play this December game with an achy knee. I mean hey, this isn’t the In Season Tournament after all.

At least Hart’s been better lately. Hopefully he gives us plenty in the 45 minutes he’s playing tonight.

Would be nice to have Jalen Johnson…

Hopefully Thibs will just put RJ on opposing PFs tonight (or just give Hart the harder/shorter forward assignment). Hart is only listed as 6’4″ on some sites!

RJ at least has a lot of heft and muscle and is a legit 6’6″. But yeah, a 2nd real PF would be nice… maybe we can also nab Pat Williams or Torrey Craig in our inevitable DeRozan trade…

Obi is the same player he was in NY. No, he doesn’t rebound and we all know why, but we have an historically bad 2 pt %, so I would rather have him for 1 more year than 2 ridiculous seconds. I understand Obi was not a Thibs type of player, but shouldn’t they at least have kept Knight or Roby on a two-way deal for this type of situation? The back end of the roster is full of people who have no shot at ever playing for the Knicks. What’s the point of keeping them?

Seeing your team sign the star player’s college roommate, who plays the same position as you, can’t be good for the psyche. I’m starting to think they might as well “Obi” Grimes to a better situation. I’d love to see them use those upcoming draft picks to restock the back of the roster, but I doubt if Thibs would have the patience to develop them.

“Over the years I’ve come to think that an evening sitting down with either Strat or Z-man to listen to their stories would be pretty incredibly cool.”

What no love for G-Man Brother Love?

6-18 from RJ feels pretty concerning.

Grimes is a mystery who plays good defense.

We cant afford to lose Randle because we don’t have a backup PF.

Other than that, it’s a really solid team.
