Guess I’ll go first, not sure why everyone sleeps in on a Friday… I made reference to it yesterday, and yeah N=1, but 7 rebounds and 7 turnovers in 36 minutes is not a great showing for 7 foot Mr. Joel.

More concerning, however, is that his exhausted, lumbering style makes 35-year-old, 280+ lb Brook Lopez look like a ballet dancer. It did not endear me to an all-in trade.

He did score 24 points, but so did RJ…

[Reposting this from last night, with a bit more material, because I know there was interest in my take a few days ago.]

At the risk of being condemned by film bros everywhere, I didn’t love Killers of the Flower Moon? Great performances, the usual Scorsese technical brilliance, etc. But telling the story from this POV for 3.5 hours felt monotonous and frustrating. I wanted way more Lily Gladstone than we were given. Scorsese threw out his original script treatment because he realized it would be a bad idea to center this story on the heroic FBI agent who came in to investigate the murders. So instead he pivots to centering it on the two-dimensional goober who keeps making the same monstrous decisions over and over for the same reasons each time. The Leo character would be a bad protagonist even in a two hour version of this, nevermind him having to carry 206 minutes, with almost none of the story seen through the eyes of the Osage characters.

I like Scorsese, but my GOAT director is Kubrik. 🙂 Still bummed Spielberg got to do A.I. and it showed a lot on the knife scene. He needed to show us that the kid was a good kid, where Kubrik would have explored the doubts about if the kid was a danger to the mother or not.

I dunno, Cyber. A lot of critics whose work I respect (even if we don’t always agree) absolutely loved it. And there are great things in it. But I went for a very quick bathroom break at one point, checked the time, and was shocked to see there was more than 90 minutes to go, because it didn’t feel like there was enough story left, given the POV Scorsese had taken. And… there wasn’t.

    Thanks Alan!

I’d like to watch the movie but I can’t find company…

My wife refuses to sit 4 hours (movie plus the usual pre-movie trailers and commercials) no matter how confortable the sits are, and my usual cinephile gang is reluctant because the only one of them who watched the movie is telling everyone that he fell asleep for 15 minutes during a rather boring first half and the lead character (Leo) is hideous.

I’m torn between a lonely afternoon and waiting for the streaming…

    And… there wasn’t.

Yeah, i know the feeling, and it can completely destroy a movie, when it’s much longer than it needed to be.

Movies longer than it should are like the RJ Barrett experience, the good parts are very good, but we need the bad parts to not happen to fully appreciate the experience. 😀

That blown ref vs. Brunson call really sucks more and more every time I think about it.

I’m on the road tonight and need to use MSG+ to view the game, but keep getting an error message. Customer Service gave me some instructions but they don’t work. Really annoying.

Blown call complaints are a big part of Jet Nation. Apparently the NFL has “apologized” to the Jets already a couple of times this year due to bad calls they’ve suffered.

I’d rather not see that with the Knicks, too, because the genie is already out of the bottle in all those cases, but no wishes are going to be granted.

Re Killers. I read the book when it came out–fantastic read– and immediately thought it had To Kill a Mockingbird movie potential. When I heard Scorsese was directing it I was wary. A book like that does not need a genius director to reconstruct it–just get great actors to bring the characters alive without much tinkering.

Taxi driver and Good Fellas are easily
among my all time favourites but i feel that Scorsese has become too Hollywood friendly instead of a europe influenced pioneer during the last 25+ years.

DiCaprio is always playing DiCaprio and don’t even consider him as an actor.
He’s a smart model hunter with a pretty babyface.

    (Personal favourite Maestro Federico Fellini)

I just find it hard to convince myself that the guy who’s “go to actors” were De Niro, Pesci and Keitel found his alter ego in DiCaprio!
Every time i hear about a Scorsese – Di Caprio collaboration there’s a Mulholland drive line playing inside my head:
” This is the girl “

DiCaprio is an S-tier movie star, a B-tier actor. He is exceptional in Wolf of Wall Street, one of my favorite movies of the 2010s. His other work is… pretty ok.

Jowles, just gonna write something similar. I looked through his list of movies and was surprised by how few I’ve seen, partly due to not really liking him. Great in Wolf of Wall Street, and okay in The Revenant and Blood Diamond, although in both he was basically just doing the Leo brow-furrowing schtick.

I share the opinion about Leo, but i liked Revolutionary Road and Body of Lies, i think he’s good in those movies. I think his fame is above him, and he thinks he’s better than he is and because of that most of the times it looks like he doesn’t even put in the effort. Like a Kyrie Irving of actors. 😀

I tend to agree about Leo. However, I absolutely loved him in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (loved Pitt in that too).

Seeing that movie made me realize that I think Leo would have maybe done better for himself if he had tried more comedies.

I also really loved “Catch Me If You Can” but more because of the story than him.

I think a lot of his movies are good but he’s just kind of the guy who’s in it.

Also, I believe Killer of the flower moon is an apple movie. So I think it will come to streaming quicker than a typical movie release. I definitely want to see it but am definitely waiting for when it streams.

I think it’s a little criminal to put a movie that long in the theaters without an intermission.

I liked–but didn’t love–KotFM. It could’ve used some editing down to make it leaner and needed to be more focalized on Lily Gladstone’s character to serve as a foil to Leo. It’s certainly well-produced and very well-made–and I loved the surreal ending–but it’s got some sagging in the middle that should’ve been left on the cutting room floor. It also lacks the spontaneity and cinematic flourishes characteristic of Scorsese’s best work. It felt strangely clinical for a Marty movie and I think that has to do with the focus on a somewhat non-traditional Scorsese pro/antagonist in Ernest Burkhart who is, as you said, just a suggestible idiot who does what he’s told. He’s a stark contrast to the explosive tempers of the protagonists in Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, and Henry Hill.

I just find it hard to convince myself that the guy who’s “go to actors” were De Niro, Pesci and Keitel found his alter ego in DiCaprio

If Scorsese had to make the concession of casting Leonardo DiCaprio over Harvey Keitel-types to ensure his movies would be seen, and to not have to fight for the funding for his next project, then that’s a no-brainer. It’s like if an owner tells a GM “you can do anything you want and will never get fired as long as you start Steven Adams at center.” Sure, he has some limitations, but you can work around them and come out fine. It’s not like being told you need to start Enes Kanter. That’s where Martin Scorsese becomes Alan Smithee.

Last time I tried to watch Mean Streets, I found Keitel’s acting so bad that I turned it off. Especially when put up in a scene opposite De Niro, who was simply on fire throughout the 70s.

Scorsese was never my favorite, and that’s a whole lot of movie. I’ll probably skip this one like I did the Irishman.

Maybe it’s not entirely Leo’s fault but staring in absolute vomit starters like “Great Gatsby”, Beach”, “the man in the iron mask” and pseudo-complex nonsenses like “Inception” and “the departed” have solidified my opinion that he’s Not acting.
    Tastes differ tho …
Many love these movies I’ve just mentioned but personally i hate them and Leo is a Huge reason for that

There was a great and extremely demanding Greek Director called Theodore Angelopoulos who had a unique slow style that Not all could bear but many Cinephiles around the globe love.
He used Harvey Keitel once and lost the Cannes Festival biggest award only by a Kusturitsa Underground buzzer beater…

    Imo
    Harvey is an actor
Leo is acting that he’s an actor
    🙂

Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Casino are all masterpieces.

I think I might like Casino even a little bit better than Goodfellas but that’s just my personal pref. Absolutely love Sharon Stone in that movie.

The Departed was good. The other movies of his I don’t really have an opinion on.

But when you have 2 movies (Goodfellas and Raging Bull) that would make a lot of top 20 movies of all time lists…that’s pretty damn good. and I think Casino is a masterpiece.

    Kusturitsa Underground

That’s also a great movie, you’re almost there in making me go get my old DVDs from the basement. 😉
PS: Sorry about it taking the award away from your countryman.

#That’s also a great movie, you’re almost there in making me go get my old DVDs from the basement. 😉
PS: Sorry about it taking the award away from your countryman.#

Haha! Remember watching both in the cinema back in ’95 and despite loving Theo’s Masterpiece i had to admit that Underground was Superb!
Bregovic’s music elevated it to different heights!
    A Mind-blowing Cinematic Experience

Casino is just Goodfellas Pt. 2 with a much-worse script. The voiceover work is at times horrific.

Casino is just Goodfellas Pt. 2 with a much-worse script. The voiceover work is at times horrific.

Jowles, we’ve disagreed about many things Knicks related in the past but this might be a bridge too far.

CASINO FUCKING RULES. Sharon Stone was robbed of an Oscar that year.

Hahaha! Guys, trust the stats… BPM likes CASINO more, but EPM says GOODFELLAS is a lot better! 😀

    Greece vs Scorsese Fun Fact
Scorsese was Huge during the 80s in Greece and when he filmed The Last Temptation of Christ based on Nikos Kazantzakis “heretic” book i wanted to go and watch it (despite not being allowed under 18yrs old)
Unfortunately i Remember fanatic Orthodox Christians not allowing the entrance to the cinemas back then due to the non Christianly correct “script”!
The same around era that they used to cut the crosses of Timberland winter shoe soles so people do not step on the symbol of their faith!!!

Those were the times my friends…
    😉

Casino is extremely charming and enjoyable as fuck but Good Fellas is 2 levels up, sorry walker …
Hate to admit it but Jowles nailed that one!
    ;-p

and I loved the surreal ending

Love that, too. Though, without spoiling it for everyone waiting to see it, I’ll just say that that final sequence feels in some way like Scorsese admitting that he ultimately wasn’t quite up to the task of telling Mollie’s story the way it deserved to be told.

If you don’t see me active in the game thread, it’s because the dinner and drinks with my buddies from school of 35 years ago is going great! 😉 😀
See you later, good people of KB!

I can’t really watch Casino without thinking about Goodfellas. It has the same structure, uses the same devices, and casts Joe Pesci in the identical hothead role. If Goodfellas never existed Casino would be just fine but unfortunately Goodfellas exists.

Those two movies, it’s like Marty turned into Wes Anderson, just doing a paint-by-numbers kind of thing, shamelessly recycling the same tropes.

I forgot about Last Temptation of Christ and I do love that movie too.

Fair enough about Casino. Like I said…it’s just my personal pref. Probably related to the fact that I saw it in the theater on Christmas Night with my brother when it was in the theaters. And I think I may have seen it before Goodfellas.

Goodfellas truly is a perfect film. Is there any better use of a song in a movie than the piano part in Layla when all the shit starts hitting the fan?

#If you don’t see me active in the game thread, it’s because the dinner and drinks with my buddies from school of 35 years ago is going great!#

    Have Fun man!
35 yrs ago WDafoe had to choose between being a God or a Man!
Tonight is the Last Temptation of Cybersoze!
Watch the Knicks or continue the drinks!!!?????!!!!
    ;-p

it’s like Marty turned into Wes Anderson

OK, see this statement bothers me.

Does Wes Anderson do “the same thing” every film?

Um, sure. If by same thing you mean craft every shot in his movies down to the last detail in regards to staging, costumes and set so that every single shot is like a painting and he’s doing that with minimal CGI, then sure, I guess Wes Anderson does do the “same thing” every movie.

But his movies get more and more detailed and he tells what are for the most part completely original stories that aren’t like any other wide released mainstream film.

Yeah, I stan for Wes Anderson. I guess being a middle aged white hipster I’m his target audience but I get annoyed when people say this shit. His movies are visually incredible and so meticously crafted. He’s a goddamn american treasure!

and, like, how many great artists change it up with every single movie or song or painting? A great artist has a POV and aesthetic and they explore the shit out of that. Sure, the truly great ones evolve and change over time but I think Wes has done that.

On the topic of Wes Anderson, I watched the Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar with my kids last weekend on Netflix and absolutely loved it.

I read that book when I was travelling as a kid and it was my white whale. I loved it so much and could never find a copy of it again but thought about it frequently.

    Anyway, I recommend.

Idk if this has been mentioned, but Vertsberger is saying that Quickley was looking for 25 mil per year. That’s a lotta garbanzo beans!

    But is he worth it?

gangs of new york…love it…that may have more to do with bill the butcher though…

second up would be inception…i love 👁 🍬

I loved Wes Anderson’s first few films but everything from Steve Zissou on is a tough watch for me, except Moonrise Kingdom, that one I liked.

I just don’t get lost in Wes Anderson’s world, I don’t suspend my disbelief when I’m watching his movies. He constantly reminds you that he’s directing the movie, always wants you to know how clever he is. I do like some of his films but some of the lesser ones have extremely skimpy storylines and try to just twee their way to the finish line. Grand Budapest Hotel, wtf was that turd?

I’ll watch the hell out of Casino. It’s just that it stands in the shadow of Goodfellas.

And so does Wolf of Wall St., for that matter (which has the exact same thesis as Goodfellas, just about a different subculture), but I find Wolf of Wall St. significantly more fun, probably owing to the lack of violence.

ugh, it’s so hard to keep up with player valuation, the roster rules and incoming league revenue resources – I would have held the line at 23 million per year…

i don’t know, maybe 25 million for the role he plays isn’t too bad…it’s tough to pay him though with: jalen/RJ/jhart/grimes/DDV on the roster…

if he plays well this year he’ll make at least 27 million a year on his next contract…if he plays poorly, he’ll be lucky to get 18 million a year…

i wouldn’t bet against quik…shit, we probably should have just paid him…

    man, i would make a terrible gm…

Most of the people I know who saw KOTFM really enjoyed it, but I’m not sure I can sit in a theater for that long. I guess you could say I have a TV critic’s attention span for movies.

Is there any better use of a song in a movie than the piano part in Layla when all the shit starts hitting the fan?

    Nope, there isn’t.

Also a big fan of the juxtaposition of Atlantis, and Billy Batts getting violently whacked.

Death, unfortunately, has become less “cinematic” in Scorsese’s movies as he’s gotten older and I’d guess it’s the same way in the new one. There wasn’t a lot of music or fancy cinematography or mise-en-scene around the Jimmy Hoffa killing in The Irishman, or really any of them.

I’m very hard to insult, anyway. One time, Robert Smigel arrived for a TV critics press conference, with the Triumph puppet tucked under his arm. Asked if I’d be okay if he opened by taking some shots at me. I said that was fine. So then he roasted me with some fat jokes to warm up the crowd. A badge of honor.
