Not sure why we should care about Kai Jones, who has averaged less than 3 points per game in his 67-game career. And apparently, no one does.

Although I prefer talking about Kai Jones to talking about Cro-Magnon Man and cave paintings.

Brad Stevens will be last GM to bet his job that KP will be healthy for a deep playoff run.

But even without knowing anything about a Jrue trade, that I completely underestimated what Portland would be able to get for Lillard considering his huge contract, and am in the same boat as TNFH in that regard.

So now where does Brogdon go? Cleveland? Philly? Just really layer the top of the East over us

He could be a decent get for the Nets if the cost isn’t too high

Jrue Holiday is a good get for them. They are not very deep though…

Starters: Jrue, Brown, Tatum, KP, Horford (or White)
Bench: White (or Horford), Hauser, Prichard, Kornet

    Am I missing anyone?

Now Portland can flip Brogdon for a lil something else.

He would be a great fit for the Clippers and at the right price.

Damn Boston or Bucks, who’s making it out of the East… The only bright side I can see to this is maybe it makes us more likely to get Embiid 🤷🏾‍♂️? Hopefully Jrue retires early…

Though (1) I really wanted to trade for Jrue and (2) I really really did not want him to go to the Celtics…that is a big haul that we would have had to best. Happy we passed.

Shit, they gave up a lot for Jrue. I am honestly shocked that they traded Time Lord for him. Isn’t KP, like, currently hurt? I guess Stevens figures you can pick up an Andre Drummond-type to stand in the middle for pennies so long as KP is healthy come the playoffs.

It’s OK to wake up Leon now…or just continue to let him sleep. Both Bucks and Celtics are either long in the tooth or have a bare cupboard with no depth. At least one of the two teams will blow up and fall apart due to understimating health risk. Leon and Pat will be there to cherry pick + Embiid.

Q has the best shoting form since Houston and Hubert.

He might be the real get for whatever team lands him, if they even decide to move him. He’s young enough to rebuild

Now is Portland going to play Williams and Ayton together? That could either be amazing or a disaster.

Is this Portland’s final haul for the Dame trade:
    Out: Dame, Nurkic, Little, Keon
In: Ayton, Brogdan, RWIII, Camara, MIL 2029 1st (unprotected), BOS 2029 1st (unprotected) GSW 2024 1st (top 4 protected) MIL swap rights 2028 and 2030

That’s two starters, a 6MoY candidate, two unprotected firsts in 2029, a lightly protected first in 2024, and 2 pick swaps.

That’s a tremendous job by Joe Cronin.

So Milwaukee will score like crazy against us but won’t be able to defend our guards. Boston can defend guards but will be thin down low. I have no idea how this will turn out.

Remember when this thread was about Kai Jones half an hour ago? That was a long time ago

    Who the hell is Camara?

It’s either Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints or we’ve finally taken too many liberties with Markattan:s name.

Though there was one guy drafted 52 this year who’s probably just a throw in. Maybe djphan knows something about him

Scoot/Simons/Sharpe/Timelord/Aytom could be scary in a couple years

    I forgot Knox the Inevitable

Knox, Destroyer of Summer League Game 1

Knox, The I Can’t think of Something Else Positive to Say

Is Brogdon that injured? I am not sure the upgrade from Brogdon to Jrue is worth that much.

Not for nothing, but Jrue Holiday and Malcolm Brogdan had very similar per 36 stats last year. The main difference was that Jrue averaged 3 more assists per 36, although at the cost of one more turnover.

So the Celts guard rotation in effect went from Smart, White, and Brogdan to Holiday, White and Prichard. Seems like a lateral move to me…

I prefer the alternate universe where we boldly traded Jalen for Dame to this one.

celts did well on the trade… age 33 jrue and the next extension is a bit dicey but for two low firsts and two injury risks… well worth it…

blazers… not so great.. they probably do need to flip brogdan for another first or two… timelord is also a big injury risk and probably a bench piece for the rest of his career… but maybe it could work platooning with ayton for a couple years…. it’s probably best to just trade him tho….

another deal not so good for us as it shifts yet another quality guard onto the market…. toronto probably in play in a huge way for brogdan…. which would also not be good for us…

you can not goad me in to action Doogie…I am too strong for that…

i will say though – it’s kinda neat that daughter is taking an anthropology class right now…

    they’re discussing genome stuff…

have you ever seen a map of early human migration patterns? such incredibly fascinating stuff…we’re still early on in our learning of other hominids homo sapiens mixed with…

as more and more artifacts are discovered, and older previously discovered artifacts are able to be re-examined with new technologies more and more it seems the picture of primitive hunter/gatherers from both the neolithic and even paleolithic time period that had been adopted for so long is changing…

people are smart…not all of them maybe, but enough of them, with enough continuity to have a very decent standard of living…

obviously that would vary by locational resources…

fairly recently some 300 thousand year old wood structure was found…yep, folks were chilling even then…

they used this technique called luminescence dating to verify the age…they measure like the level of photons in the surrounding soil of the artifact…

turns out trigonometry was being worked out in Babylon a thousand years before the Greek folks put stuff together…recorded trig tables on tablets from 2600 bce…that’s pretty neat…

hey doogie, do you enjoy playing music or singing?

    do you enjoy your work?

i enjoyed work…I just wasn’t able to figure out how to do so in moderation…

I hate the trade because Knicks- but it is a VERY good trade for both teams. Even better if Portland flips Brogdon and Grant somehow. Boston’s starters can compete with anyone now. Maybe even the 72 win Bulls or 73 win Dubs. I kid..but that is a very nice starting 5. They are going to have to start every game strong because teams with good benches will destroy their reserves. Nevertheless, it looks like us and Philly are gonna have to do something to move the needle now. Miami too. It’s us vs Philly as constructed for the 3rd spot. Maybe Miami if Spo continues his brilliant work with that roster. Beyond those 5 teams though..shew..the East is..whelming. Not over or underwhelming..just whelping. Orlando and Brooklyn are next up, and Orlando could end up being the team that separates itself from the rest of that pack. I don’t trust Chicago..Indy’s close..and who knows just what in the fuck with Toronto. Umm..who else is there? Oh! Cleveland lol..TOTALLY forgot about them. They probably beat out Miami for 5 unless Riley makes a strong move.

The question is- should Leon and Co continue to be patient with how things at the top of both conferences are shaking out? Or will he feel that itch to be in the conversation now? Philly is probably stuck with Harden now, and unless that sitch goes from bad to worse in a hurry, we probably have as much hope for Embiid as we do for Giannis. Hmm…
    Zion?
Siakam? Is he actually better than Randle?
No chance in hell we land Ant.
Can you trust adding a Kawhi or AD??
I still don’t want Donovan without a bigger 2 way wing next to him and Brunson.

We are going to have to find a way to continue to build this thing organically and hope RJ takes a step forward and Randle becomes more efficient.

But begrudgingly, kudos to Boston. I knew this would happen because they have too many contracts to match that happen to belong to useful players

    bravo to the blazers…

bucks have a nice starting five, celts have a nice starting five…they both got 2 stars…

definitely top heavy teams…hopefully our second unit plays really well…

Bleecher Report just ranked Knicks bench as the BEST in the NBA.
Weird but true: Thibs has a team USA starter who comes of the bench.

Leon build a young and deep team of very, very good NBA players who actually love playing with each other. I like this strategy better than grouping together veteran All-Stars on max contracts with small windows. It hasn’t worked since 2009 Boston. Health, personalities and ego tend to get in a way of optimizing talent and wining though overcoming adversity.

This is why they play the games. Is it October 25th yet?

A closeout lineup of Jrue, White, Brown, Tatum and KP – how are you scoring on that team late?

Shit, Brogdon really makes a gazillion percent sense in Toronto, doesn’t he?

I’m pleased that Morey didn’t get Jrue. I think the problem for him there is that the team he’d be flipping Harden to in that scenario likely would just take Jrue themselves for whatever they were giving up for Harden.

    thanks for that director…

i know if i was in the front office i might be a bit tempted to just – REACT!!!…

leon is gonna slow walk the whole league to death…go leon go…

where is a good fit for james harden???

miami maybe (the thought of him getting grinded by those folks there would make me smile), salt lake city (how much trouble can he really get in to there)…hmmmmm detroit perhaps…

    Am I missing anyone?

    Queta !!! 😛

Edit: Who needs RWIII when you have Queta? 🤭

Reacting would be a terrible mistake, Geo. But acting first probably would have been a really good idea.

I’m predicting the Blazers will keep rolling the dice… Brogdon to Toronto? RWII to Brooklyn? And there’s also Grant!

What’s crazy is Portland can probably stand pat now and still compete with Sacto and Dallas for the 6th spot out west. Brogdon is a great complement to Scoot and Simons starting. Sharpe might be able to play SF and Williams gives them a great backup big. If they choose to flip Brogdon, they can afford to wait for a great deal. I’m not sure which contender he’d be a perfect fit on though. Maybe the Lakers? I would say the Clips but that would give them a 3rd important player with heath concerns.

Someone posted this on r/nyk. thought it was worth a share…

Quentin Grimes was a better on-ball defender than Jrue Holiday last season and the numbers suggest it wasn’t really close

I know Knicks fans are bored waiting for the season to start, but I think people are forgetting just how good defensively Quentin Grimes was in his 2nd season in the NBA. So I wanted to present some stats just to show how elite Grimes was last season.

Grimes made a huge leap defensive last season and lead the entire league in matchup difficulty.

How big was it to lead the league in matchup difficulty? By the numbers Grimes had the 3rd highest matchup difficulty season in the past decade!. Thibs was really leaning on Grimes to guard every single player at a near historic rate. So how did Grimes do in his assignments?

Opponents only shot 31.4% // 0.72 PPP in ISO when Grimes was guarding them. In comparison opponents shot 45.2% // 0.86 PPP against Jrue Holiday in ISO.

This is due to the fact that Grimes is a versatile defender who can matchup with nearly every position in the NBA, while Jrue is mainly effective against guards and gets bullied by wings.

We saw this in the playoffs in the first round where Jimmy Butler averaged 56.5%! against Jrue on 46 FGA

Meanwhile Grimes was able to hold Donovan Mitchell to 27% in the first round and then held Jimmy 30.8% shooting when matched-up with him in the second round.

Now I know some of you will argue that Jimmy was injured but this tracks to the regular season where Jrue usually gets abused by big wings (Butler 50 FG%, Tatum 71.4 FG%, Lavine 57.1%). While Grimes holds his own (Butler 43.8 FG%, Tatum 38.9 FG%, 47.6%)

For all you parochial weenies, it appears that NY football is alive and flourishing. Y’all are just looking in the wrong place…

It makes signing DD seem pretty dumb. Doesn’t it?

It’s not the signing of DD that I have an issue with (he’s a good player), it’s just signing him and trading Obi and that being it.

Found out that Grant can’t be traded, so that means he’s not on the move and can also mean the Blazers are keeping him because they must and not because they think he’s some kind of good role model for the young players.

Jerami Grant cannot be traded until Jan 15 because he re-signed using Bird rights with a 20% raise in salary and the Trail Blazers are over the cap.

It’s not the signing of DD that I have an issue with (he’s a good player), it’s just signing him and trading Obi and that being it.

Yeah, i think we should address the backup PF hole in the current rotation. I know Hart can play there and we’re in the era of small ball basketball, but he’s undersized (6’5) to play PF.

Yeah, i think we should address the backup PF hole in the current rotation. I know Hart can play there and we’re in the era of small ball basketball, but he’s undersized (6’5) to play PF.

I agree but I also think that Thibs/Leon are comfortable playing iHart/Jericho back court when size is an issue.

They will get exposed, – if Randle calls in sick for a 15+ game stretch. He’s the only overall team health risk factor going into this season. There is a ton of lineup roster overlap and combinations possible for the remaining 4 positions.

What’s crazy is Portland can probably stand pat now and still compete with Sacto and Dallas for the 6th spot out west.

    I lied.
TOTALLY ignored Memphis. Yeahhh. I need more sleep lol

A closeout lineup of Jrue, White, Brown, Tatum and KP – how are you scoring on that team late?

    Damian Lillard maybe?

Someone posted this on r/nyk. thought it was worth a share…

I think they’re a little over-optimistic. Jrue crushes Grimes by DARKO & beats him by EPM. Part of Grimes matchup difficulty was that the alternatives were RJ & Brunson.

Of course, it’s possible the all-in-one metrics are skewed against Grimes by bad teammates or in favor of Jrue by Giannis & Lopez.

I’m never sure how valuable PPP in iso really is though. Most teams don’t run iso all game, especially against a PG like Jrue. Jrue does a lot of stuff for the team as a whole.

And, of course, if somebody beats you to score then it could easily be Mitch, or someone else, getting his PPP hurt instead of Grimes.

DD is a solid rotation player. He’s just very redundant with what we already have. On the positive side, I think Barrett, Knight, and Roby will be enough at backup 4, as long as Randle doesn’t miss much time. I’m not a fan of Hart at the 4 at all.

Celtics are adding a bunch of risk for Jrue, that starting five looks like a defensive nightmare but they still don’t have a lot of shot creation and they are maybe even more fragile then they were last year.

Maybe we’re looking to play some I-Hart at the 4? We could use someone big who Thibs will play so he doesn’t kill Julius

That Celtics team is pretty nasty on paper but KP, 37 year-old Horford and nothing else up front just isn’t enough without really exceptional health luck. Would be a minor miracle for both those guys to be upright in June and they need both otherwise it’s Kornet time.

A silver lining for the Knicks here is the Sixers weren’t able to parlay the Jrue sweepstakes into solving their Harden problem. So they’re still a total shit show and an Embiid trade demand is looking as likely as ever.

That said, both the Dame and Jrue trades clarified that we are not particularly close to genuine contention without another major move. The trades also clarified that the major move is Embiid. There’s no point in kvetching about his injury history or mixed playoff record, we don’t have a choice if he hits the market. We either get him and have a chance to do big things, or don’t and enjoy some second round exits.

Any interest in sending Fournier for Brogdon? The salary is close enough to not require any other players. Not sure what it would take in terms of pick compensation, but the injury scares me tbh and I don’t see much of an upgrade…

Also it pains me to say it, but man, the Celtics might be the best team in the NBA.

They took a team that already had the best SRS and net rating in the NBA, subtracted:

-Timelord (+1.8 EPM* in limited minutes)
    -Marcus Smart (+1.7 EPM)
    -Malcolm Brogdon (+0.2 EPM)
    -Grant Williams (-1.4 EPM)

    Added:

    -Porzingis (+5.1 EPM)
    -Jrue Holiday (+4.9 EPM)

It is much, much easier to replace the lost depth than it is to acquire these kinds of impact players. There are absolutely health and age concerns, but no team has zero question marks. With just average luck, they’re going to be an absolute menace.

*If you are going to respond with a soliloquy about how no one metric is the end-all-be-all I am going to ignore it.

I love this kind of analysis; quoth The Ringer’s trade analysis:

remember how thoroughly Holiday’s Pelicans destroyed Lillard’s Trail Blazers in a 2018 playoff sweep

remember how thoroughly six years ago that was

    Here’s some interesting stats:

Jrue Holiday has a career playoff shooting percentage of 42% in a season’s worth of minutes (2,651), including shooting under 40% in his 3 seasons with the Bucks…and 40.9% in his championship run. In his last 5 playoff runs (300+ attempts) his 3pt% was .250, .320, .303 (his championship year), .316, and .286. Jrue shoot the Bucks out of the playoffs vs. the Celts in the second round in 2021-22…36% from the field, 30% from 3, while Smart shot 41% from the field and 39% from 3. He was terrible against the Heat in the playoffs last year, especially considering how much the Bucks needed him to step up when Giannis was struggling.

KP had a very good season on a terrible team with absolutely no pressure in a small market with no media and no storied history and no entitled, insufferable fans. He has played a total of 327 playoff minutes. In his first year he got hurt after 3 games. In his second year he played all 7 games and was hardly noticable…13.1 pts, 5.4 rebs, 0.7 blocks in 33mpg, while shooting .296 from 3.
