Mid-August is hilarious.
“Here’s how Donovan Mitchell can still be a Knick!”
“This trade involves the Knicks and Clippers swapping stars!”
Go home, mid-August, you’re drunk.
That’s funny, Brian!
Donnie, as I rewatch some of the “classics” like The Wire and Hot Fuzz and virtually everything by Quentin Tarantino and find an awful lot that I dislike, I find myself more and more feeling like a “we” with you. Cheers to the pretentious taste of advancing age, which I like to call “discerning,” and which further alienates me from my peers as some of them dive deeper into nostalgia, mostly through self-abuse by way of Star Wars et al. adult fandom. Now, for one more viewing of L’enfant—
you mfers think you’re aging up a gentle slope of inexorable nuance toward a crescendo of basketball transcendence because buddha forgot to mention that when you finally unpluck the last shimmering particle from the subjectivity soup and you be the soup, it’s bing bong stannus maximus all over again. meanwhile the rest of us out here scrapping with entropy by rewatching justified and dialing up midjourney renderings of pablo prigioni nutmegging danny ainge. pity the we-folk and our compromises but you need us on that wall.
haha…that’s funny pt…i am deep in the shit of justified season 2 (just plowed through season 1) and i feel like i shouldn’t be watching it but i just feel compelled to reach for the pint of whatever ice cream there is in the freezer and lemming like….head to the tv and swtich it on…until the ice cream is gone…rinse and repeat..with only new epsidoes of Warrior Season 3 to break the chain…
I totally came on to say exactly what ptmilo did, so thank you for making it so I don’t have to find the words…
Justified season 2 is great
Is ESPN actually trying to explain firing Jeff Van Gundy and Marc Jackson so it doesn’t seem like another “New” Coke moment. They will fail.
While waiting on an opposing attorney I asked Midjourney to render “former NBA player Pablo Prigioni performing the ‘nutmeg’ basketball move on former NBA player Danny Ainge.” That didn’t go so well.
When I was a little more specific and went with “Pablo Prigioni successfully dribbling a basketball through the legs of Danny Ainge,” the results were…a little better?
I actually think the 2nd iteration is less accurate because Pablo has never been as angry as the picture in the bottom left
Justified also had a very good series ender, too.
I watched the first two episodes of the new limited series, but wasn’t thrilled with the second episode. I’m waiting for the season to end to just binge watch the rest of it.
Weird I am currently rewatching Justified, as well. No binging, though. I gave myself a one episode max per sitting. It’s strangely soothing to know that I have 45 minutes of Raylen Givens available at any time for the next year.
Hey Gents, Hope y’all are well. I missed the cool refreshing breeze of ptmilo’s prose.
NBA schedule is out today, so … summer is over? Win predictions? Too soon? 😉
And I have RAYLAN on my desk still waiting to be read; does that count?
you got me thinking on this one donnie…
I’m still relatively young in therapy, so it’s easy to remember my thoughts/treatment prognosis early on…
I believed I would need to significantly change my personality…going from being passion and fury guy to some kind of jedi monk…
in one of those periods of increased anxiety…about 2 weeks in, about another month to go…
even though it makes absolutely zero biological (scientifical 🙂 ) sense, for the last 4 years or so I’ve documented these 10 to 12 week periods of relative peace…still get panic attacks, but they go away after 20 minutes or so, no worries with those these days…
it’s these prolonged periods of 6 weeks or so that are challenging…difficult to maintain healthy routines…
it’s getting better…I spend about 90% of my waking moments – trying to stay fucking calm…
When do they report to training camp? – can’t take this anymore…
hi director nyc…any interest in the fiba world cup, starts august 25, runs to september 10?
i like that a lot of the “bigger” nba names aren’t there…hopefully more a highlight for younger players…
the usa team, led by our very own jalen brunson are playing well together…they have a squad of young fun to watch players…
training camps and pre-season kick off late september/early october…
The NBA hasn’t finished milking the Lillard and Harden stories.
Thanks Geo…100% agree. The FIBA games will be both fun and competitive.
Geo,
Have you discovered the triggers?
When I was having anxiety issues there was usually a gap of a week (sometimes more) between the very stressful event and when my body actually started reacting to it. I had my triggers pinned down and slowly reduced the ones under my control.
I’m not sure if you are on meds, but the very best thing I did was getting off Xanax to get through the rough periods and get some sleep. I went to a nurse practitioner on the advice of my urologist (lol). The first thing she did was beat me over the head to stop taking Xanax. After a tough withdrawal period, I finally got off it. I haven’t taken one or needed one in over two years now despite loads of potential triggers. And amazingly, the Melatonin she advised for sleep actually works. Had it not worked she had a different medication to try, but she convinced me that Xanax is the work of Satan.
Our 2023-24 schedule is out: https://www.si.com/nba/knicks/news/new-york-knicks-2024-schedule-boston-celtics-madison-square-garden-jalen-brunson-julius-randle
ESPN had an article breaking down the schedule and one question asked was to name an early NBA Finals matchup, Bobby Marks said Suns at Knicks.
I saw that Big Blue. I was shocked. Lol someone has us and Finals in the same sentence!
The schedule gets weirder and weirder. Why on earth do we play CHI 3 times in the last 9 days of the season?
The first 7 games will tell us a lot about our team. We open vs. the newfangled Celt at MSG, then go on the road vs. Trae & Co., the Pels with Zion back (maybe?), and the vengeance-seeking Cavs, and then return back to MSG vs. the Cavs on a B2B, then fly to MIL for the first in-season tournament game, then fly back to NY to play the Clips.
After that, Wemby makes his first visit to MSG…I wonder how much those tix will go for?
So Partnow’s 6 player in Tier 1 are obviously Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Doncic, Durant and Steph. He will probably have 1A and 1B, so my guess would be:
1A: Jokic, Giannis, Embiid
1B: Durant (getting old), Steph (also getting old), Doncic (still needs to develop)
I see reasons to bump Doncic up and Embiid down. I also see reasons to make Jokic the only guy in 1A and all the others in 1B.
When I look at Jokic’s B-R page, I start musing on how high in the top-10 of all time he will eventually climb. It’s absurd how dominant he is, and while Embiid had a phenomenal year, Jokic clearly was the MVP again. And there was no overall dropoff in his stats in a 20-game playoff run…slightly lower efficiency, slightly higher usage, but his BPM and WS48 were virtually unchanged.
As long as he stays healthy and has a similarly good team around him, there’s a possibility of a dynastic run for Denver. And who wouldn’t want to play with him?
The Knicks will be on national TV 25 times this year!
ESPN: 10 (including opening night vs. Celts and Christmas Day vs. Bucks, both at MSG)
TNT: 7
ABC: 3 (MIA, LAL, BOS, all at MSG)
NBA TV: 5
Only the Warriors, Lakers, Suns, Nuggets and Celtics are on more than the Knicks, all of whom are legit contenders who have gone all-in and who are virtually finished products.
Considering that just 3 years ago at this time we were projected to have the worst record in the NBA, and that we have a young roster with no one making more than $30M next year and lots of trade ammo left, that’s quite a transformation!
Not only that, in the question “The hardest first 10-game stretch for a contender?” Marks immediately named the Knicks. He takes it for granted we are a contender. Pelton also mentions us in the question about contenders. It’s mind boggling that while this board has been debating are we an actual contender, the sports pundit world is assuming yes we are.
Obviously you have to squint to see a contender in objectively sizing up our roster. Personally I don’t see it unless RJ puts it all together. But it’s nice to be respected by notable pundits.
I quote Bobby Marks:
That Marks bit is the hottest of hot takes. Pretty surprising, and not in a flattering way. Buried in that take are a bunch of assumptions:
-Brunson is a legit alpha, specifically as a scorer but more broadly as a floor general.
-The Real Julius is what we saw last regular season, and this time he will show up in the playoffs
-RJ is primed of a major leap this coming season
-JHart is capable of being an even better glue guy
-DDV is a difference maker as a 3&D combo guard
-IQ and Grimes will improve further and be more effective in the playoffs
-Mitch and iHart give the Knicks 48 minutes of elite rim protection with two somewhat different looks on offense
-The non-rotation bench (Deuce, Sims, Roby) will fill in adequately when their numbers are called
-Thibs and his staff will learn from what didn’t work vs. Miami and tweak things as necessary
If most of those things happen, then sure, we are a contender and with a few lucky breaks and bounces, we can beat anyone in the East.
But I sure as hell wouldn’t bet on it. For now, pencil me in for a MIL-DEN final.
Yeah, but it sure is nice not to start with the assumption, “If Kevin Knox takes a big leap forward…”
Bobby Marks is not tier 1. I do want to see an analysis on the success of the roster continuity approach, though I wonder if the NBA with the players’ short careers is a good testing ground.
I remember reading on ESPN that the Knicks were likely to make the playoffs in 2005-06 because Larry Brown was just that much of a winner.
So yes, I agree it’s nice to see pro-Knick hot takes, just take them with a huge grain of salt (but again, yes, better to see them than to NOT see them).
Hi Alan, hope you’re feeling better. Just want to mention that I had the same experience with Suits, it was there so I watched it, and was mildly amused and willing to keep going. But both Lady Raven (a legal eagle in her off hours) and I both became disturbed by the idea that everything the guy was doing was going to be overturned when it came out he wasn’t an actual lawyer, so we stopped. But was mildly amusing to see Megan, at least — I had no idea.
On the other hand, I finally went in and watched Russian Doll, and we both loved the first season (I have to admit a strange soft spot for such shows, from Groundhog Day to Palm Springs to Edge of Tomorrow to Source Code to Boss Level to even, gulp, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things), but I’m wondering if we’re going to be sorely disappointed with Season 2 (which we’ve started and are questioning…).
If you wrote something about it back in the day, happy to read what you said.
I can’t believe my first foray into talking television, and I killed KnickerBlogger. Damn.
Russian Doll season 2 is surprisingly good since I never thought they would be able to follow-up season 1. That said, maybe some distance between viewings wouldn’t hurt.
I have never watched Suits but I have one friend who won’t shut up about it. He’s half joking when talking it up but really loves it. He was also a big fan of Burn Notice back in the day
