life, liberty and the pursuit of endless content…inalienable rights…
I have no idea what inalienable means…I’m not looking it up either…

Hahaha, God bless you, Geo! 😉
I’m not going to look it up either, i’m going with it’s the rights that the aliens can’t take away from us!! 😀

I know this isn’t Metsblogger, but please allow this short rant lol

HWHAT IN THE ENTIRE FUCK? I mean..Verlander and Scherzer seemingly forgetting how to pitch(they can no longer blame the pitch clock since every other pitcher adjusted long ago)? Alonso mashing but batting sub .220? Lindor batting sub .240? Squirrel racking up strikeouts and batting sub .260? What the hell? Senga is the only pitcher out there dealing, and they can’t get a freaking hit! As a Mets fan, I know this season is over- and it hurts. The season has been over since the last series that we lost to Philly. I think they can sell and retool on the fly. The minor league system is stocked fairly well, so I’d listen to offers on everyone except Lindor, Alonso, Baty, Alvarez, Senga, Robertson, and I’d probably keep one of Nimmo or Marte around. I’d also take offers for Vientos and maybe Parada- but it would take a really good offer to move off of Parada right now. I am so sick over this. It’s like the whole team has the yips or some shit!

Rant over. Back to the Knicks lol

I still get invested in SL games. I found myself last night critiquing defensive footwork and lack of body movement on offense when Peterson got the ball. I swear I looked in the mirror and almost had a Thibs style comb-over until I rubbed my eyes to see that I was still me lol. Guys had their feet goin one way and lunging for the ball in another direction…no body was using their wingspan to try to crowd space..it was awful. But that’s just the fundamental basketball side of me coming out. There’s a reason those guys were out there in the final game of SL. They have no shot at playing NBA level ball. Maybe Peterson as a microwave scoring 3rd PG on a rebuilding team’s roster. Skapintsev was out there too because he was the only true C, but they weren’t getting him involved. When Shriver checked in, it looked like they just gave a fan in the stands a jersey- he did not look like a basketball player. Nice jumper though. Anyways, watching that game made me understand exactly why a Thibs defense devalues steals. I didn’t understand exactly why until I saw some of those guys body positioning as they were trying to pick pockets. It made me appreciate Thibs’ defensive scheme a little more- when executed properly.

I’m extremely disappointed in Roby. At one point, he got regular minutes in the NBA- but he looked out of sorts in the summer league. I guess he’s fine as a break in case of emergency PF, but I’d rather give his spot to a hungrier player at the same position. We could look into Tshiebwe if he doesn’t stick on Indy’s G League squad. I’d like Watford, but he’d probably force Thibs into a 10 man rotation, and the more I think about it- I kinda wanna see Hart and RJ stretch out and play some small ball 4. It’ll definitely do RJ some good if he embraces it

I know this isn’t Tennisblogger but it’s killing me that Carlitos isn’t quite ready

Poindexter, I feel you. Been years since I cared about baseball, but I casually cheer (sic) for the Mets and Mariners, and this year has been a very long summer.

Meanwhile, I presume the rest of you are glued to the screen watching tennis…

I didn’t really watch summer league but to stick up for Roby he was only cleared to play basketball two weeks ago so that’s probably why he looks out of sorts.

I know this isn’t waterpoloblogger, but come on, Spain?? They could barely shoot from beyond the 6 and sometimes even swam the ball during their counter attacks. How did they come out on top in Zagreb?

Carlitos probably gave them a motivational pep talk about winning against the odds vs Serbians

I know this isn’t Owenblogger but I can’t believe he wrote off Carlitos after the first set.

Lindor, despite the ugly BA, is still the best player on the Mets because he has the great glove. Nimmo is still a good player but might need to be moved to a corner OF spot soon. Alvarez has been a revelation: he’s an unexpectedly outstanding defensive catcher who has 70+ power and is only 21. Alonso is a fun but one dimensional player who is probably about to get overpaid.

Everybody else can take a hike, on the offensive side. Baty is a ground ball machine and it doesn’t appear that his swing is fixable. McNeil has stunk all season, hitting tons of popups. Looks overmatched against MLB fastballs. Marte is unplayable. Pham has had a great season but should be moved at the deadline.

The pitching sucks and will take years to fix, as there are no good arms above A ball. The Mets’ best pitcher in the high minors is Vasil, who looks like a back of rotation guy. There are no hitting prospects in the high minors either. You have to go down to A ball to find a top 100 hitting prospect (Parada). I like Jett Williams but he’s many years away.

Eppler has mostly failed at his job, as the Mets’ long-term situation just does not look great.

It probably won’t happen, but I hope we take a chance on Harry Giles for the backup PF spot. He was a monster out of high school and could always shoot a bit. Now it looks like he can hit threes.

I’m just impressed that Harry Giles has had such a surprising solo career after his years in One Direction

That the Mets have regressed isn’t a surprise…I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if they’d won like 88-90 games or so this year. The 101 last year was a bit of a fluke. They still might make a run of sorts, but 90 wins seems like a pipe dream at this point.

To regress so much so suddenly is kind of shocking. One cause is a number of players aging rather suddenly, especially obvious in the cases of Scherzer, Verlander, and Marte (who might still be hurting a bit from his groin issues).

The McNeil thing is weird. Maybe getting “paid” caused him to lose his edge or something? That’s happened to lots of pro athletes over the years, but he doesn’t seem like the type.

A few games before the AS break, Gary Cohen cited an amazing stat. He said, IIRC, that the Mets were something like 24-4 in games where their starting pitcher completed at least 6 innings. So, that’s on Scherzer, Verlander, Quintana (hurt in the first half), and the crappy assortment of back end duds they keep throwing out there.

Short term, just keep throwing Baty out there, but yeah, he’s overmatched right now. Sell what you can (Robertson, Pham, maybe Scherzer if they eat a bunch of money). STOP trading away pitching prospects — try to build some minor league depth there. The Escobar trade was a step in the right direction.

Long term, they need to figure out what to do with Alonso. The guy has become a modern Dave Kingman (better glove than Kingman, but an inaccurate arm like we saw in last night’s game). Lindor is what he is, a quality (though a bit overpaid) SS who will gradually become grossly overpaid in a few years. Nimmo’s fine now, but like Lindor the back end of his long deal will probably become increasingly ugly.

Nimmo has “old man” skills so he should still be a good high OBP player when he has to move to a corner. Eight years for him was insane, but he probably has 3-5 good years left.

So wait, is Devin Booker and/or Bradley Beal the de facto PG in Phoenix? I’m not sure that’s a great idea—but then again, maybe it is?

JK47, a few other short term moves. Trade or cut Carrasco, please. He’s total garbage. Because he’s a lefty, Brooks Raley might yield a decent minor league reliever in a trade. Your buddy Vogelbach is way overdue to be cut…just bring Vientos back up for a long look at DH and 1b. Maybe someone would like Canha as a solid 4th OF.

They’re not going to get any blue chip prospects back. Just grab some A ball arms if possible. I just doubt that Eppler is the guy to carry out this mission, but I hope I’m wrong. All he excels at is spending owners’ money. Lots of money.

It’s interesting… even though we have only improved our roster marginally—at best—pretty much every team in the Atlantic has gotten worse in the short term except the Celtics (and you could argue that they didn’t get very much better). Many of these teams could still have moves planned, though, but then again, so could we. It seems like a prime season to take the over, but this is the Knicks organization after all…

It’ll be fascinating to see Cohen’s next steps. You’d think he’s pretty much tapped out money wise…but are we sure?

Baseball remains the one sport in which you can truly buy your way out of trouble if you want. The luxury tax gets onerous as hell, but there is nothing stopping Cohen from putting in another $200M if he so pleases.

Interesting Mets season, the pitching being bad is not surprising given the age of their two aces, but the entire lineup except for the kid catcher underperforming is pretty weird

    VAMOS CARLOS!!

What Jordan did for basketball is what I did for reverse jinxing.

What Jordan did for basketball is what I did for reverse jinxing

Gabe Vincent’s 20-point performance in game 1 must have been your 1996 series against Orlando.

The gap at that level of tennis is so small, even barely perceptible decline or improvement will cause elite players to switch places. Novak may still beat him here or there over the next year or so, but father time is undefeated. The bigger question is who can challenge the kid long term.

One possible advantage of Cohen’s money here might be his willingness to eat salary in a trade, as they recently did with the Escobar and Seattle trades. No one wants Scherzer or Velander at $43m per for the rest of this year and next. However, if Cohen is willing to eat half of that or more, they might be able to deal even those guys, if they want.

They were just penalized 10 spots in the first round of the draft b/c of the team’s combined salaries. They still got a good player at #32, but it cost them over $700k in available money to pay draft picks.

Hey, on the bright side, Cano, McCann, and Ruf come off the books next year, I think. That’s like $34 million less for next year. I wonder how much of that Pete Alonso might be getting?

This sets up one of the most interesting US Open’s we’ve had in a while.

Having the Grand Slam on the line would have made it extra spicy but this US Open is going to be spectacular no matter what.

I was at Carlos’ breakout match against Tsitsipas at the Open two years ago and it was evident he was the next great one. Didn’t expect it to happen this quickly though. Father Time may be undefeated but Novak hadn’t lost a match at Wimbledon in a long time.

I think in a way the pressure may be off Carlos.

I think in a way the pressure may be off Carlos.

    Agree.

Beating Novak in a major on grass is a giant confidence booster. Mentally it’s going take him to the next level. He also has to know that at 36, Novak is already past his peak. It’s incredible that any slippage by Novak can’t be even be seen or measured easily. But from here Novak is going to slip very slowly and he’s going to keep getting better. So even if Novak wins a major or two from here, the inevitability of his own dominance over him is close. He has no pressure other than wanting that day to come sooner.

It’s interesting… even though we have only improved our roster marginally—at best—pretty much every team in the Atlantic has gotten worse in the short term except the Celtics (and you could argue that they didn’t get very much better).

Ess-dog, I’m not sure about Cleveland. They didn’t do a major move, but they tried to fix some holes in their line up and may have succeeded.

Otherwise, you make a good point.

As Carlos peaks, Novak will already be gone. Unless someone else young can break through to that elite level, he’s going to be on his own for years piling up majors and becoming a VERY serious threat for a Grand Slam because Nadal won’t be preventing it at the French. Guys like Roger and Novak were versatile and consistent enough on all 3 surfaces to win a Grand Slam , but they were blocking each other and Rafa was always there to pick up a non clay major and block the French if one of them was having a standout year. With those 3 on their way out and this kid versatile enough to handle all 3 surfaces, a Grand Slam seem almost inevitable.

The Mets are 29th in MLB in pitching WAR, and Oakland isn’t even attempting to field a major league team, so the Mets have assembled the worst pitching staff in baseball really. You can get rid of Scherzer and Verlander but there’s still nobody left who can get anybody out.

If they want to compete they need to look at those two as back of rotation innings eaters and find real #1 and #2 starters. You could tell the bullpen was going to stink just looking at it on paper, so that also needs a complete overhaul.

    Love this from Novak…

Novak Djokovic says he’s never played a player like Carlos Alcaraz:

“People have been talking about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, & myself. I’d agree with that. He’s basically got the best of all 3 worlds… I haven’t played a player like him ever.”

I doubt there will be a better tennis match for a few years.

Ess-dog, I’m not sure about Cleveland. They didn’t do a major move, but they tried to fix some holes in their line up and may have succeeded.

Otherwise, you make a good point.

Cleveland’s not in the Atlantic. 😉

The gap between us and the top two teams in the Atlantic is very large, though. They can afford plenty of slippage without us being poised to take over.

Amazing stuff, one of the great matches.

Owen, I was lucky enough to be there. From my small sample size of the 50 people nearest to me and using the trusted ear-test, I would say the crowd was easily 90% pro-Carlos.

    Wow Bernie!!! Amazing!!!

Yeah, Carlos has a lot of Maximus energy. He rallies the crowd effortlessly. At the match I saw against Tsitsipas my wife and a few other scattered Greeks were the only people not going nuts for Carlitos.
