    Nice!!! I love clowns.

Djokovic v Alcaraz starts shortly. Perhaps the best tennis match of the year.

Woke up at 5:30 PST for this match.

To be fair I normally wake up at 5am PST.

Semi-interesting Hollinger Q&A in The Athletic this morning about the Rockets’ choices this summer. Read it with an eye toward Knicks’ options, with not much there but interesting to see who he thinks is available and maybe not bad choices for trades.

I’m ignorant and thus agnostic and stay out of the draft pick arguments, but I thought this was an interesting take on the Rockets’ situation, perhaps it has some resonance with the Knicks.

‘As for trading the 20th pick, Houston should look very hard at swapping this for a protected future first. They just don’t need another Garuba/Christopher/Washington type soaking up roster spots and development minutes. The Rockets might also look at trading 20 for a productive veteran, especially in the backcourt.’

Hey, if Houston needs to spend $47 million this offseason, Evan Fournier would take them nearly halfway there. Just saying…

I thought this was an interesting take on the Rockets’ situation, perhaps it has some resonance with the Knicks.

‘As for trading the 20th pick, Houston should look very hard at swapping this for a protected future first

Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. In revenge, she brought a golden apple, inscribed “to the fairest one”, which she threw into the reception.

Speaking of the Judgement of Paris and Greek myths, I highly recommend the podcast Greeking Out for anyone with kids in the 6-12 age group. It’s absolutely fantastic.

As for trading the 20th pick, Houston should look very hard at swapping this for a protected future first. They just don’t need another Garuba/Christopher/Washington type soaking up roster spots and development minutes.

That’s just dumb as fuck. Perfect example of too much “thinking” and too much “analysis.” Not every question requires “thought” or “analysis” and “thinking” and “analyzing” for the mere sake of it leads to bogdown.(*)

“We suck and we have the 20th pick in the draft. Should we draft someone?”

    Yes.

    Done.

Not only can you get the right answer that way, but you’ll have plenty of time left over for mahjong.

(*) Now, see, I don’t really even mind dumb. The world has a lot of dumb people in it and the vast majority of them are perfectly fine, if not excellent, people. I grew up and went to school with many of them; I have some family members that snugly fit the term. I wish dumb people nothing but the best. What really irks, though, is dumb wrapped in the pretense of smart — and especially dumb wrapped in the pretense of “analytical.” That’s an entirely different species.

Awesome stuff Alan, definitely adding Reservation Dogs to my list.

6'10" LSU big KJ Williams worked out for the Knicks according to his IG. As with most reported Knicks workouts thus far, Williams is likely to go undrafted pic.twitter.com/VinIk2atBr— New York Basketball (@NBA_NewYork) June 9, 2023

For what it’s worth (probably very little), I like the numbers on this guy!

Also, 6’7” forward Chris Livingston from Kentucky recently pulled out of workouts, leading execs to believe he has been promised a 2-way contract, as he is likely to go undrafted.

    Hmmm… Kentucky…

I think I encouraged geeking out a little too much…my daughter is majoring in Classics at the moment. Latin, Ancient Greek, all the useful things…. I now understand my father’s irritation when he asked what I’d do with a degree in English Literature. “Read books.” Though I guess it all worked out.

As for whether Brunson is 1A or not, some stats from this last season against a player universally considered “1A” from the same-age season:

    TS
    .597 v .592

    FTR
    .328 v .197

    USG
    27.2 v 29.6

    AST
    28.7 v 35.0

    TOV
    9.4 v 11.4

First player is Brunson. Significant edge in free throw rate, significantly inferior as a distributor (though that’s compensated for with the ridiculously low turnover rate). The only meaningful difference is usage, but as we saw in the playoffs, his numbers don’t generally dip with higher usage than he had during the regular season. As with all great players, you can’t really contain him with a good game plan. He could sustain higher usage if that’s what the team needed. (E.g. in the absence of a certain power forward.)

It’s definitely true that his defense prevents him from being a total superstar, but we’re talking about the difference between all-time great vs. “1A player,” which is what my argument is. Yes, Spoelstra gave Jalen his props, but most of the talking heads – and many on this site, including the redoubtable Cybersoze – still consider him 2A at best. Considering the intangibles he brings (the “immaculate vibes” weren’t due to Julius or RJ!), that’s enough to comfortably call him the lead dog on a good team. If you don’t think of him as 1A, you’re letting the eye test (small dude, limited athleticism, not a highlight player) mislead you.

now understand my father’s irritation when he asked what I’d do with a degree in English Literature.

My dad (an accountant) was also deeply annoyed when I chose English as my major.

I currently work for the most prestigious wealth management firm in the world, and last week they tapped me to teach a room full of SpaceX rocket scientists how to raise financially literate children.

    Life is funny.

Nice, Hubert. And familiar. Life is full of surprises…some of them even good…

Yeah, the shotmaking in that set was downright absurd. Absolutely out of this world. And I have a long meeting to go to. Killing me….

Tennis is brutal when people get booed. There’s no home court advantage and no teammates. They just really hate your ass. Novak reaping what he sows.

My dad (an accountant) was also deeply annoyed when I chose English as my major

I’m telling my kids to major in art history or anything other than what’s practical. Enjoy your education. Job skills can be developed.

I don’t like Djoker and I absolutely and obviously love Carlos but Novak catches too much flack in my book, especially at this stage having been a good citizen for years now. He is a pure tennis genius and from what I understand a pretty good dude in private. Know people who know him well.

Once a player has repeatedly demonstrated in the playoffs he can lead a team down the stretch of important games and come up with huge performances when required, he’ll get the credit for being a #1.

I’d say Brunson is on that path. People are now recognizing that those playoff games in Dallas last year were not a fluke because he came up big again this year. He may not have everyone on board yet because there’s still not enough of a record, but once coaches and other players start saying it, you know you are pretty much there.

Also, there are clearly levels to #1 options.

Some guys are virtually unstoppable. Some can at least be slowed a bit.

    @wojespn
NBA Finals trade: The Denver Nuggets are acquiring the least favorable of Oklahoma City’s first-round picks in 2024, the 37th pick in the 2023 draft and 2024 second-round pick for a protected 2029 first-round, sources tell ESPN.

Interesting move. Denver already owes OKC a top-5 protected pick in 2027.

Thanks for the shoutout, and you’re one of the (few?) KBers that goes to the last thread to read what you’ve missed. Congrats for that.
I don’t know if i’m using the tiers well (1A, 1B, 2A, …), but i think 1A is a player that you can surround with good players that aren’t stars while still being a contender. Giannis? Jokic? Kawhi? I have my doubts KD can win a championship without another star by his side. Those days are over for Lebron, maybe Jimmy can do it, we’ll see. So in that sense i think Brunson is 1B, but maybe i’m misunderstading the tiers. And that means i think Brunson can be the leader, yeah, but he’ll need at least one star by his side. And i’m a little skeptical if Randle qualifies as the needed star. I think we need to upgrade Randle and RJ to the star i’m talking about. Who can that star be? I don’t know and until now i’m not a fan of the names we’ve been talking about here.

Interesting move. Denver already owes OKC a top-5 protected pick in 2027.

Is this because of the new CBA? To have the ability to fill the roster with contracts cheaper than the veteran’s minimum.

    Life is funny.

The best advice I give my students is that the most valuable skill you can develop in your education is learning how to learn. I would imagine that at least 27 high-volume respected KB posters would be evidence of that. Each and every one of that group is self-taught in basketball analytics.
Edit: Query: Whose head will roll because Uncle Steve’s ROI is awful?

College/university is there to get an education in humanism, not as vocational preparation for the needs and whims of capital.

We’ve gone badly off the rails if people are feeling guilty or apologetic for majoring in English Literature.

Is this because of the new CBA? To have the ability to fill the roster with contracts cheaper than the veteran’s minimum.

    For Denver, yeah.

They’re also losing Bruce Brown this offseason unless he wants to give up a large chunk of money. So pick 37 gives them a chance to replace him.

And now for the prediction you’ve all been waiting for: who will win G4, based on the media effect on players’ psyche.

Denver is lionized obviously, with Murray getting the elite superstar label, and Braun celebrated as a brilliant late 1st draft pic. But none of this is crazy exaggerated.

On the other side Miami did not lose respect following their G3 collapse. Nobody is saying they’re done. I don’t think they’ll have the “I’ll show you” edge tonight, but they will be more focused, and maybe go after Jokic and attack the rim more.

So in terms of who will be hungrier I think Miami has the edge, and since this is my only criteria I predict they’ll win a close game.

(So far in the finals I’m 2:1. Either Miami makes me 3:1, or Denver drops me to 2:2).

    (Personal preference: go Nuggets!)

College/university is there to get an education in humanism, not as vocational preparation for the needs and whims of capital.

I was assigned a bloviating philosophy major as a roommate my sophomore year, and thankfully he imparted this wisdom on me when there was still enough time for me to drop out of business school and switch majors.

i think 1A is a player that you can surround with good players that aren’t stars while still being a contender. Giannis? Jokic? Kawhi?

You’re setting the bar REALLY REALLY high. A 1.A. is the best player on a contender, but doesn’t have to make the team a contender on his own. I mean, even Jokic can’t do that. For that matter, the only one who comes to mind who DID do that is Lebron. Even Jordan couldn’t do more than the playoffs without real help. Luke couldn’t even lead his team to the playoffs! Is he not a 1.A?

Disappointing two sets. It’s like the tennis gods didn’t want Owen to miss anything.

Brunson had a 7.7 bpm in the playoffs and he wasn’t even 100%. I don’t know what tier that is, but its not likely we can acquire anyone better.

I was hoping we could acquire a pick from OKC. They are realizing that you can only roster and play so many young players. That’s why they’ve had to dump solid prospects like Bazely and Roby. I’m sure there will be more to come.

The Katz article is a very good primer on how the new CBA could affect the Knicks specifically. I’ve had the same thought about Derrick Rose, it would seem to be a waste of a potentially valuable salary slot to just let him come off the books.

I would add that now seems to be a better time than ever to have extra first-round picks of questionable quality lying around–the trade that just took place seems to speak to that. I won’t say too much more on the matter because it’s an oddly controversial topic around here.

Brunson probably can’t be the “best” player on a championship team because of his size and defensive limitations, but I do think he can be the first guy a championship team turns to when it really needs a bucket.

The Bucks for example often went to Middleton over Giannis in those situations. Giannis is, obviously, the far superior player overall, but Middleton’s skillset lent itself better to nut crunching time.

If we got, say, Embiid, he’d obviously be our best player. But we’d still want the ball in Brunson’s hands down the stretch.

I love Brunson, but i think we need at least one more player at his level. I’m not saying there’s players that can win without help, it’s just that some selected few can win with less help than usual. And those guys really standout as the best on their teams, like Giannis, i think no one will dispute that he’s a tier above all his teammates. Kawhi had Lowry and Siakam, i’m not seeing a lot of players that could win with those two as his sidekicks. I don’t think Brunson could do it. But instead of 1A, 1B, 2A, etc, please tell me if you think we can be champions with Randle and RJ as Brunson’s help. And if not, how good the help should be?

Thought exercise, Cyber: imagine if we ran back this year’s roster, only we replaced RJ with Mikal Bridges(*). What do you think the ceiling of that team is?

(*) Narrator: we will not be replacing RJ with Mikal Bridges.

I would add that now seems to be a better time than ever to have extra first-round picks of questionable quality lying around–the trade that just took place seems to speak to that. I won’t say too much more on the matter because it’s an oddly controversial topic around here.

I agree, the new CBA will add value to our protected picks. And also about the new CBA, i think people aren’t yet aware that we can avoid using the MLE during the offseason because it can be used as a trade exception later on.

Well, I’ve been clear for a long time that RJ is the problem. I just never believed he had the athleticism, the shot, the court-vision, etc to be a #1 or even a #2. I desperately wanted to trade him before the extension. Now I don’t think we can get any real value for him – but he’s clearly the weak link. No, I don’t believe in Julius as a #1, but #3, sure. Especially because he’s shown that he can be a plus defender, which compensates for his issues imo.

Oops, didn’t mean to delete my comment.

My English MA pays me handsomely, to the tune of 71 times what I made teaching a 12-week class as an adjunct. I don’t think I could have taught 71 classes in a calendar year, but you really have to dig into that sigma grindset mode to make it as a hustler-adjunct.

Tennis: what a disappointment. As soon as he forfeited a service game for a few minutes of massage, I knew it was over. Would have been even worse had he not been spraying UFE all over the court in set 1.

Now we have to root for a guy who has never won a title at the 500, 1000 or Slam level, or an accused domestic abuser who probably has a better shot at keeping Djokovic from #23. Sucks.

Thought exercise, Cyber: imagine if we ran back this year’s roster, only we replaced RJ with Mikal Bridges(*). What do you think the ceiling of that team is?

I think we’d be contenders, yeah. But it’s a case where we’re picking the ideal player to make this work, like the 2004 Pistons. No superstars, but all players were a perfect fit with one another. Well, all except Prince, i think he was easily replaceable without losing their contending status. And please, i’ve seen written here that the Pistons had “luck”, but i don’t think a sequence of ECF, Champions, NBA Finals (losing in 7), ECF (losing to the eventual champions and referee darlings – Heat) shows that they were lucky. So i think we have a good team, and Leon can elevate us to contending status, but if Brunson is still the best player on the team then our upgrade has to be with the perfect fit player, which is Mikal and i don’t know if there’s another player as perfect as him to do it without being a star.

We’ve gone badly off the rails if people are feeling guilty or apologetic for majoring in English Literature.

The problem is cost. The tuition for a public 4-year degree has nearly doubled since 2000, adjusting for inflation. Housing costs are likewise through the roof, with college students basically becoming fish in barrels for predatory rental groups and first- and second-home boomer-owned rentals.

My advisor/mentor made a strident argument about the humanist angle back in 2010, and I still argued that she had never had to pay back that kind of debt, having gone to college in the early 90s. It’s even worse now.

The skyrocketing cost/debt for going to college is very much in capital’s interest — as is anything that gives people options beyond subjugation to capital’s whims and dictates.

Indeed, the reason most people think they “have to go to college” in the first place is that they think they need to in order to be competitive in capital’s labor market.

In terms of housing costs, they’ve gone way up in all the really appealing places in the country, and college towns are typically really appealing places. One way around that is to not have the expectation that you have some cosmos-bestowed right to live in one of the really appealing places. (In the late 80s/early 90s, the cities hadn’t been gentrified yet and they weren’t really that appealing. That’s the main reason that looking back, they seemed so “affordable.” But they sucked compared to what they are today.)

I studied cultural geography in school…I loved it…

I got incredibly lucky though that a general engineering major was mandatory in addition…

an engineering background has been by far the most useful stuff I ever learned…just a good way of looking at things…especially for someone with such a loose mind (even before I got hit in the head i was pretty goofy)…

My dad (an accountant) was also deeply annoyed when I chose English as my major.

I currently work for the most prestigious wealth management firm in the world, and last week they tapped me to teach a room full of SpaceX rocket scientists how to raise financially literate children.

    Life is funny.

As the urbanistas say, Hubie… U ain’t neva lied!

From my mid-teens til I was 30, my dad heavily insisted I join the Air Force, NYPD, or become a teacher in the city. He pounded the drum of “stable money and benefits” despite me telling him at every turn that I had no interest in any of those paths. I don’t do guns, I had no interest in military discipline, and despite being a sub for 3 months at age 23 (a middle school near Parkchester – that’s all I remember) I knew I had no interest in teaching at the grade school level. He couldn’t allow himself to understand why I chose broadcast media and sportscasting, couldn’t understand why I enjoyed watching sports and not playing them (I have no coordination lol). Extremely frustrating to explain your reasoning to someone for over 10 years straight only for them to “un”understand or just circle back to their same talking points regardless of what you say.

When I joined ELAC and LACCD in 2017, I had since set aside my media desires. My wife was already with them and had been selling me on all the benefits and solid pay, which coming from recently living in Syracuse sounded like a huge boon. I had already pivoted twds real estate investing earlier in the decade and had my duplex in Syracuse for a year and a half. I just needed a more stable 9-5 to help support my living in LA and building a life w/the wife and her kids. It was actually my customer service experience that helped sell myself on joining the counseling department as an office assistant (to be the main guy working their front desk and appt scheduling).

So there I was, a fledgling investor and customer service professional joining higher ed. Not knowing much about the kinds of other jobs the district had, I one day browse the internal job site during some down time and I come across something called a Sports Information Specialist. At the same time, one of the athletic counselors walks by me, and I ask her “hey, do you what this position is?” Out of the blue, she gives me this whole backstory on how the Athletics Dept has needed one for awhile but the then-AD (that’s #lolKnicksSupv predecessor) wouldn’t ask the school to open the position. She then asked me if I was interested.

That’s how the journey to my current position started. Back-doored my ass into a position that a culmination of my sports media, professional and educational background. While working in higher ed. Go fuckin’ figure…

The way the adults have monitized the need/want of American kids to go to college and put all that money in their pockets while the kids are saddled in debt is a national disgrace.

As Jowles said, they’re captives. When that happens, you can do one of two things. You can either hold to some set of norms and decency and forbearance and keep costs low, middle management and useless bureaucracy low, all agree that college is something more profound and useful than mere lucre and commerce, and carry on accordingly …. or you can take full advantage of that captivity, squeeze them for every last dollar and put it in your pockets.

For a long time, we chose the former. In recent years, we’ve chosen the latter. Shameful.

(Pro and college sports in terms of audience/customer captivity are kind of the same thing, though nowhere near as important — and we’ve seen pretty much exactly the same thing happen. I dissent.)

Wasn’t Prince like their best perimeter defender or something though?

    I’m getting scared… I’ve found myself agreeing with E lately 😉

We’ve started a 529 for the lil man. I sold my duplex in April (what a fucking headache, but at the same time sold it before the prices started to really sink in ‘Cuse) and set aside some scrilla to offset these first year of life costs. We’re in a good place with him, and we’re blessed for that.

I don’t know if we’ll still be in CA once he gets to HS (and at the rate things are going I don’t know if we’ll be here when hits MS, shit lol), but with the structure of the CA community college system, I wouldn’t have an issue with him going the CC route if he doesn’t get any legit scholarships to go straight to a 4-year. It’d be way cheaper, and give him more opportunities to get funding for a 4-year when he transfers on.

I would add that now seems to be a better time than ever to have extra first-round picks of questionable quality lying around–the trade that just took place seems to speak to that. I won’t say too much more on the matter because it’s an oddly controversial topic around here.

Now would be a pretty good time to have Jalen Williams, too. Hence the controversy you surprisingly deem odd.

Another interesting note from the Katz article was Hart possibly picking up his player option then signing a contract extension with the Knicks and thus keeping his 2023-24 salary at only 13m.

…. or you can take full advantage of that captivity, squeeze them for every last dollar and put it in your pockets.

Speaking of ‘Cuse, there’s a reason why houses in the Westscott neighborhood go for at least 100K more than in most places in the city.

Wasn’t Prince like their best perimeter defender or something though?

    Yup.
He was the perfect glue guy for that team, with his size and lenght he always covered the most dangerous wing players, saving Rip Hamilton’s energy free to run miles on offense in his never ending motion…

Prime Chauncey, Sheed, Big Ben and Prince… that Pistons’ team defense was stifling!

Now would be a pretty good time to have Jalen Williams, too. Hence the controversy you surprisingly deem odd.

And last night we were told that signing Josh Hart to a $20M per year contract would help “facilitate trades,” when all this time I thought it was first round picks that facilitate trades … and they gave up a first round pick to get and then sign Josh Hart.

The world does move at a fast pace sometimes, to be sure … but this pace is crazy!

Cdiggy, I love that career path story. I’ve always felt luck favors the prepared, or perhaps it’s knowing kinda what you want to do and grabbing at it when it floats by. I too wandered and grabbed (multiple times, really), so your story resonates.

The way the adults have monitized the need/want of American kids to go to college and put all that money in their pockets while the kids are saddled in debt is a national disgrace.

I’ve said for awhile now that the problem isn’t the college degree itself, even if you major in something “useless” like philosophy or english. I majored in theater and have done just fine. Hence, me putting useless in quotations.

The problem is the debt kids are saddled with. And it’s absolutely ridiculous that so many decent paying white collar office jobs require a college degree. I didn’t learn a single “office” skill in college beyond learning how to write well. No one majors in Microsoft Office or Excel LOL.

My fear is we now have a whole generation of young parents who are going to actively discourage their kids from going to college. Not everyone can go into a trade. There’s a perception growing now that becoming a plumber or electrician is the way to go, as if that is easy and anyone can do it. They might require less formal schooling but often require years of learning the skill before being good enough to make money off of it. And a lot of those jobs are not easy, physically very demanding. Plumbers might make bank but it’s hard to be on your knees and back every day once you hit your mid 40’s.

I don’t know what the answer is. I’m saving up for college for my little one but I plan on being super real with her when that time comes. Go in state and mom and dad can probably help you pay for most of it with your college fund and you can major in whatever you want. But out of state or private school, you better get a full ride scholarship cause we might only be able to cover one year at the rate we’re going.

The way the adults have monitized the need/want of American kids to go to college and put all that money in their pockets while the kids are saddled in debt is a national disgrace.

you make it sound like barely brindled capitalism (as a societal guide) is a bad thing…where is your love for the american entrepreneurial spirit…accumulate as much as possible…

shoot, next you’re gonna start with that crazy talk about how marketing firearms and nicotine to kids is like a bad thing…ugh, snowflake 🙂

I’m probably not the best source for advice on college since I quit college to spend more time shooting pool and playing horses. 😉

Somehow, I did wildly better than I imagined when I was a kid wearing hand me down clothes, had a TV that didn’t work unless you put tin foil on the antennae, thought going to the Catskills from Queens once every few years was considered traveling, drove in a car that was 50-50 to break down every time I was in it etc..

If I was to do it over (or had kids), I’d see college as BOTH a way to get an education that could help me make a living and an opportunity to expand my thinking and pursue my interests. You can pursue other things even if you are majoring in something more geared to a future career.

If my kids weren’t suited to solid success at higher education I’d probably encourage a trade. In other words, my thinking on it would be exactly the same as it was decades ago for many families.

The much greater financial burden is problematical. IMO it should change the way you weight your options and desires. For many, taking on the burden still makes sense, but probably for fewer now than years ago. But if you do miss college, it’s not going to stop you from getting an education if you want one. It’s monstrously easier to educate yourself now than years ago if you are determined to accumulate knowledge on any subject. Monstrously may be an understatement.

reading about the different “cultures” that were in existence between 20k bp and 12k bp…not “civilizations” – cultures…

reading about the ones in europe now (the cave paintings and artifacts in Lascaux got me started)…

you know, i don’t why those folks weren’t able to reproduce at a greater pace, or figure out how to make a cell phone, telegraph, microwave oven – a freaking wheel…how do you not notice that round wood rolls…

where is your love for the american entrepreneurial spirit

    Incinerated.

You can pursue other things even if you are majoring in something more geared to a future career.

This is so true. I don’t regret majoring in theater. But I could have majored in something more “useful” still minored in theater and been involved in just as many school productions in my spare time. Could have easily done internships or taken acting classes in the summer if I wanted. I moved to NYC right after college and fact is, I could have not done a single thing related to theater in college and once I got to NYC, would have been able to take classes, intern or work at any number of theaters.

Especially if you are going down the creative path, I think education is important but there are ways to get that education without “majoring” in that thing.

I think that is the biggest thing a lot of people don’t convey to young people. You can literally learn or do whatever you want however you want. You don’t have to major in it or go down some specific career path to learn about something. Volunteer some place, get an internship, get the most entry level job possible at some place you find interesting. All that really matters is being near the people you want to learn from and being inside the places you want to learn from. And it never ends.

Agree with Strat’s last graf. Depending on a family’s social and financial status, parents must weigh a college education’s cost-benefit. For many in the upper economic strata, it is the credential and social network that going to a brand-name school confers. In many sectors of commerce( and the Supreme Court)` there is a bias towards brand name schools that confers opportunities foreclosed to those who don’t matriculate to these places. That said, unless your child desires a career in a highly technical field ( engineering, medicine), there are more cost-effective ways to carve out a rewarding career path. For example, my wife ( A pre-TNFH Stuy Hi grad) has a degree in Russian literature, apprenticed on Wall Street while in high school and after college, then became one of the few female traders on Wall Street in the ’80s. She’s been running a charter school for SpEd students for 15 years, totally learning about education from her college friend, who founded the school. I have no doubt that many of you have done career pivots and have found success in disparate fields.
If you’re lucky enough to find a mentor ( maybe Donnie Walsh will mentor the replacement for Bob Iger), that is an equally plausible path.

oh yeah, and just to add about our stone(d) age ancestors – i’m like a 100% sure that if it was like 15,000 years ago, and i was just chilling around a fire getting high off of whatever was available i’d have figured out the whole hot air balloon thing…

seriously, sew up some leathers, fill it with some hot air and off you go…

some strings and cups, and heck, you got commo village to village…

As someone that went from zero to a lot in America, you aren’t going to get me to bash business, markets, etc… However, imo what we have now is a wildly corrupt variation on what we had decades ago. IMO, there are a lot of villains in this change. It started in the 80s, got worse in the 90s, and we’ve been trying salvage the system ever since then creating ever greater excesses and corruption to keep it afloat. Now it’s an unsustainable cesspool. I primarily blame the unholy relationship between Wall St, the Fed and the government. That relationship is not about markets, business, merit, improving standards of living, or anything even remotely resembling what the “intent” should be. That relationship is straight from the bowels of hell. And this is coming from someone that worked on Wall St for decades and made most of his net worth in the stock market. There are loads of good people there, but the system is corrupt.

I dropped out of Columbia to work on Wall Street. I always felt like it dramatically reduced my opportunities to pivot to something else. My advice would be to get a BA in whatever field you are passionate about and worry about job skills later. I work with people with all types of educational backgrounds.

while i was at this prep school i applied to columbia…i remember the admissions’ lady suggesting not to even bother…i thought it would be cool though to go to school in the city…

They were really looking for minorities in the early 80’s so I got a full scholarship. I just got too caught up in the NYC nightlife to focus on school. I really should have gone to someplace like Dartmouth, where there would have been nothing else to do but study. I didn’t get the degree, but I had 0 student loans so it wasn’t so bad for me.

I really should have gone to someplace like Dartmouth, where there would have been nothing else to do but study.

The only other thing to do at Dartmouth is drink, so I imagine things might have gone the same direction…! Or worse …

It’s a massive bummer Alcaraz cramped. Was setting up to be an all timer. Still, no shame in losing a semi at a major. It’s truly incredible that Djoker can outwork a 20 year old – all credit to him.

My sense of the men’s game is that it requires a couple of years of strengthening the body. I think Carlos will get there.

Love the stories as well. We need to build a lot more housing for students and everyone else.

“The only other thing to do at Dartmouth is drink, so I imagine things might have gone the same direction…! Or worse …”

Lol! I have a couple of friends who went there. They seemed to do better academically, but I got to live rent free on the upper west side for 4 years and party my ass off.

Jamal Murray has a career BPM of 0.5 over 12k nba minutes, and a playoff BPM of 5.0 over about 2k minutes. People talk about playoff Jimmy but they should be talking about playoff Jamal. (if you want to toss out his first couple of NBA seasons he’s better, but like a 1.5 or so BPM in the regular season)

Wow, that is super interesting and surprising. Not normal for guys to outperform like that over a decent sample now.

Sorry to break up the pedagogy party, but apparently Phoenix is HOT for Quickley, according to Yahoo.

Seems as if many teams are. Maybe we should start him? That said, does Phoenix even have a package that would make sense for us?

Phoenix isn’t trading Booker or Durant. They gave up all their draft equity to Brooklyn. So that basically leaves Ayton and/or CP3. And… no thank you?

If you think Ayton can sustain more usage and create through post-ups, he might be an interesting player. He didn’t get much of a chance to show his stuff with Booker and Paul running the show.

And definitely not for IQ who makes less than 1/10 of what Ayton does.

IQ should be close to untouchable until his next contract kicks in.

If Phoenix is willing to swap Booker for IQ straight up I can maybe think about it…

Seriously, Ayton maybe can be better in a different environment, but outside of the “big-4” the Suns’ roster is barren and they have no picks to trade…

Knicks need to keep these workouts private. Otherwise, they will see their targets getting drafted.

Without researching, I think the Jamal Murray thing could just be timing.

I vaguely recall that he broke out in the playoffs. Then he got injured, so he didn’t have time for his breakout to impact his regular season numbers. And now he’s back in the playoffs.

This is probably who he is, I just think the timing of his injury created a weird discrepancy.

i’m like a 100% sure that if it was like 15,000 years ago, and i was just chilling around a fire getting high off of whatever was available i’d have figured out the whole hot air balloon thing…

    I love you, man

I actually like Ruud so the Final will have some rooting interest for me. Amazing he has never won a title….

The Murray conversation may have been spurred by an Athletic piece on him. It’s pretty wild.

“Seven players have averaged 25 points, five rebounds and five assists per game in the playoffs for their career and have at least career 50 playoff games. The first five are all-time, pantheon greats: Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Jerry West, Stephen Curry and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The sixth is on his way to joining them, with these finals serving as a coronation: Nikola Jokić. That’s five multiple MVPs and The Logo. ‘Nuff said.

The seventh player on that list has never appeared in an All-Star Game, much less an MVP conversation. In seven seasons as a pro, he’s never won any major award of any kind, actually, except for being named second-team All-Rookie in 2017.

    His name is Jamal Murray.”

I believe the piece also says Murray has the greatest differential between regular season and playoff stats.

Nuff said about Playoff Jimmy. It’s Playoff Jamal!

The weird part with Murray is that his regular season numbers are almost identical to his other seasons other than an uptick in assists.

He didn’t seem to be playing all that much better post-ASB either. Assists were up again but his TS% was down (though he did miss time right around the ASB).

Definitely curious to see how he does next season.

Very nice thread about non-basketball topics, i love it. And about today’s topic, with the information i’m about to give you’ll wish you were born portuguese, college is free* here in Portugal.
    * – except for a small yearly fee of about 1.5k

So Ramahawk, who was the player you compared Brunson to?

you were right hubie, I should have lawyered up right away…

the legal process I encountered a few years ago in family court while trying to help protect the kids and their mom took a lot out of me…

it was very confusing and took me nearly a year to figure out the right forms/processes/verbiage to accomplish what was necessary…

the VA lawyer process stuff from a couple of years ago was even more physically/mentally/emotionally tough, even with counsel…

I really needed to buy myself time…I tried to stay disciplined in the narrative, data and details I shared with the company trying to get them to work with me, to no avial…

hopefully I didn’t make the process more difficult for whomever picks this up… the good part is I recently shared the story with a patient advocate rep at the VA clinic- and they pretty much got the gist of the situation in less than 5 minutes…

not looking forward to having to re-live the last couple of months…not a good time with my health…

I take long walks with the dog to refine data, details, the timeline and narrative…

in the last meeting on wednesday with an hr person – she actually fucking asked me if I was recording the conversation…

after all the shit that’s gone down – she questioned my integrity…

daughter thinks she may have just been trying to trigger me…

i feel like I’m still spending way to much time in bed: “resting”…my strength is returning though…taking care of the basics, focusing on family…

Oh sure, but on the other hand I bet your health insurance is free too

Pretty sure at least $1.5K of my tuition went to building a buffalo shaped swimming pool

Learn whatever you want but learn how to code on the side, or just learn how to code and skip the tuition

Oh sure, but on the other hand I bet your health insurance is free too

Oh, you’re a connoisseur. 😉 But to be frank, health insurance is a mixed bag, we have it free but in some areas we have long waiting lists, so everybody that can afford to pay the health insurance to be able to go private care to avoid the waiting, does it.

How much is the private insurance?

For 3k a year you can have a lot of stuff included and then when you go to the private hospital you’ll only pay a small fee, the rest is covered by the insurance. But we have lower salaries here than you have in america so it isn’t as cheap for us as it looks from your perspective. But i think we have access to good care and with reasonable prices for what the salaries are here. Of course everybody complains, because we have the public free care, whenever we have to pay we think it’s super expensive, but comparing to other countries i don’t think it is. I don’t know why we don’t have like health-vacation, where people could come here be well treated and spend some time recovering on a nice country, and in the end the bill will be lower.

I’ve read Portugal is a great place for US citizens to retire to.

I just saw a piece about how the trend of US people retiring to Portugal is reversing a bit. Still want to go.

Going to be a battle tonight, that’s my initial read.

Geo, best of luck being strong. Lady Raven is a lawyer, and whenever I tell her to sue someone (at least once a month) she reminds me how much I’d hate-hate-hate the experience. She knows me well.

Cyber, got an extra bedroom for my son? And does he have to speak Portuguese?

Kfinj – the other player is Kyrie in his age 26 season ( same as Brunson).

My Heat fan buddy says Jimmy has to shove for them to win. Seems like that’s the plan.

You mean there’s another $6mm Josh Hart that didn’t cost a first round pick?

If the Mets just released all of their pitchers and allowed the opposing team to hit off a tee they’d probably get better results

Jokic should be called the Chef with how he feeds everyone.

I wish someone would feed Mitch like this

The nuggets are not making shots and the Heat are not catching up. That’s not a good sign for Miami.

Shame about Alcaraz. The second set was tremendous. Was rooting for Novak, but not to win like that, and would happily have taken either in the final. Casper Ruud is like paint drying, manifest in human form.

Alcaraz is a delight and he’s going to be collecting these trophies en masse before long. I wonder if he has the competitive fire to get into the Big Three’s stratosphere. Seems like it at times but I also wonder if he’s not sociopathic enough.

And Zverev is trash, glad he’s out.

Caleb Martin’s regression to the mean has been tough for the Heat.

These teams deserve to be here. So well-coached, so cohesive, so clutch.

Yeah. Both fairly admirable if you can get past the utterly cynical way the Heat practice the dark arts.

“What can Brown do for you.” Not bad Mark.

Brown was awesome. Their role players really showed up
