Vaguely interesting that the team is still working out draft prospects. The guy in the linked article above sounds like he might be a UDFA, but I still suspect Leon is going to try to either buy a second round pick or trade into the mid-late first.

Given that up to lottery day they still had a chance to get 1 pick, might as well have the scouting area finish all the work they did. Would be quite the reversal if we traded into the draft!

I like that Middleton idea in the article linked above, but only if he replaces RJ. I’m not crazy about it, but I like it. A starting 5 of Mitch/Randle/Middleton/Grimes/Brunson balances really well. Alas- even if we use RJ in a S&T, the price tag for Middleton is too high at this stage of his career. Plus..RJ has left me very excited for his future again after his improvements in the playoffs.

Bottom line is still the fact that RJ & Randle can’t be in the same lineup. It’s just a matter of who you have more faith in moving forward. For me, it’s a hard choice. Let’s not forget that Randle, for what it’s worth, is a walking 20-10-5. This should make for an interesting offseason

Need advice from the Mets fans: a coworker has extra tickets to tomorrows game and invited me and the family. Any suggestions on what to see/eat while we’re there? We’re driving in and I got a spot at a garage a few blocks away. Any and all advice on the experience is appreciated. Especially since none of us are Mets fans and the kids don’t care about baseball at all.

Alan- it’ll be a nice event for Mets fans and probably a good game. Would have been better if last night’s pitching matchup were today’s matchup. Last night was painful btw…to see Bassit dominate Mets bats in his return to Citi. Anyways..the team is supposed to honor a few guys from their past. HoJo..Horowitz..I think. I can’t remember who else. Nice weather..seems like a fun day at the park. I still have yet to make it to Citi Field for a game, but it looks like a really good stadium to be in. Go for it

I’ve been thinking about Steve Nash lately. I know there hasn’t been much news about Bryant being interviewed anywhere, but if for some reason he decides to move on- I’d be interested in bringing Nash on board. I think he’d work very well with RJ, Brunson, Grimes, and Quickley at bare minimum. And all equally too.

I’m in a twitter chat with a lot of serious Mets fans and they suggest the kids fan fest by the center field shake shack

The Randle vs RJ debate is a tough one, but I think you can’t do it in isolation. You have to take into account who is playing C and who the replacement players are. The idea is to create more space and less duplication of skill set. Even if we can’t get an individual upgrade, a better fit will improve the team.

I get the feeling we are either going to do almost nothing except upgrade the bench/depth a little (maybe add a pick) OR possibly make TWO pretty big moves like maybe moving Mitch and one of either RJ or Randle.

I would still like to see him healthy in the playoffs with Brunson next to him before giving up on him.

    Agree with this.

Also want to see him in a lineup that doesn’t have major spacing problems before declaring he can’t get it done in the playoffs.

I suspect there would be quite a difference if we played Brunson & Randle with OG & Lopez instead of RJ & Mitch.

The Randle vs RJ debate is a tough one

Randle is very good. RJ isn’t.

    IMO Middleton is too old.

We are trying to improve the team, compete and hopefully contend soon, but we are not in a position to say a 31-32 year old guy is the final piece. He would make us better now but he would also shorten the window of an unfinished team and then we’d have to start retooling again faster.

We are trying to improve now but also keep a solid longer term plan intact.

“Randle is very good. RJ isn’t.”

Randle is a confirmed head case and RJ is very young and will almost certainly get better, maybe quite a bit.

I hate the two of them together. They are too similar and even Brunson/JHart can’t improve the basketball IQ enough to compensate for both.

Randle just had ankle surgery, which I guess confirms he’s a headcase

Randle just had ankle surgery, which I guess confirms he’s a headcase

The impact of his ankle issue on his playoff performance this year has nothing to do with my opinion of him. I’m the first guy here to excuse subpar periods due to injuries and layoffs. His previous years as a Knick demonstrate what he is and it continued into the playoffs this year. He’s too up and down emotionally and his effort level matches his emotions. Since he’s not a good fit with RJ and Brunson, imo someone has to go and it’s not going to be Brunson. Like I said previously, which of RJ and Randle should go is dependent on who comes back and who is playing C.

If Towns is playing C, you don’t have to worry about scoring, but you need a high level defender and spacer at PF.

If Mitch is playing C, you can’t trade Randle without bringing back a serious scorer.

There’s a little more flexibility trading RJ because he’s 3rd option, but you’d certainly need 3 point shooting.

Yeah I’d give Randle a bit of a pass due to the ankle. I’m more concerned with his overall play during the season than his playoff performance.

He’s definitely a “good” player but not a good outside shooter or defender. And as Brunson is now our A1 tentpole guy, we need to surround him with 3/D guys.

Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past either RJ or Randle to improve their shooting somewhat, so maybe staying put, more or less, is enough if we add a bench shooter or two…

And yes, RJ was clearly the problem during the regular season, and swapping his minutes with OG minutes would be an easy short-term fix. But is it worth aging the roster and depleting your stash of picks? I’m not entirely sure.

i like just walking around the park and taking in the various views… fan fest in center field has some minigames… depending on the time of day probably the best place to watch the game… there’s some areas where you can pretty close to the bullpens also….

the tom seaver statue is nice i would definitely check that out before heading in….

you’ll get decent food anywhere in the park nowadays…i haven’t had it at citi yet but pig beach is pretty decent bbq (for nyc) which i think is a new addition this year… pat lafrieda’s sandwiches are probably my favorite.. pastrami from what i hear is good too…

i dont generally eat at the park tho as i either get chinese on main st… or mexican/venezuelan in corona.. before or after the game… you have the night market in flushing meadow altho i’m not sure it’s running game days… around the stadium itself is not very happening tho… i think there might be some bars to tailgate.. but i probably prefer to hang somewhere else and head in…

the issue with Randle is that he can be healthy but being 29 and having a very physical style of play he absolutely needs to have a more consistent outside game… because eventually that physicality will wear on you and you get more injuries or you cant bully people as much….

he already had a career high 3par and it’s been trending up every year with the knicks… so it’s already happening…

every power forward goes through it and i hope we can integrate some pick n pop with brunson and randle because.. yea it makes sense to involve your two best players in action together like most teams do….

Seems like the play to me is to try to “sell high” on RJ after he looked competent in a few playoff games.

There were 190 players who qualified for the leader boards this year. RJ ranked 179th in BPM. He ranked 189th in STL% and 166th in BLK%. Also 182nd in defensive BPM.

He can’t defend. Like, at all. He’s a zero-way player. He’s good at taking and missing shots. He’s the same age as Deni Avdija and had a similar but worse season.

Trade him now while it looks like there’s a possibility he’s not terrible, before he gives everybody a lot more evidence that he’s terrible.

“There were 190 players who qualified for the leader boards this year. RJ ranked 179th in BPM. He ranked 189th in STL% and 166th in BLK%. Also 182nd in defensive BPM.”

Somebody should send this to Thibs, who clearly pays no attention to such facts.

Someone should also send this to RJ, who also clearly pays no attention to such facts.

Now would be a good time to sell high on both RJ and Julius. Whos to say Julius will keep up his All NBA production and have another down year like last season.

I saw a Mets game the other week, not sure it’ll be helpful since it was at Coors. I do recommend the mountain view at sunset.

Vogey and Nido are in the lineup today and Megill is pitching so yeah I’d focus on trying to find something good to eat

RJ/Randle is an interesting dilemma. JK is right, Randle is the much better player, but there are a couple things that give me a little pause. Trading RJ is probably a win now move (I mean we could trade him for picks, I guess, but I would be shocked). Randle is getting older and might suck again next year. But who is trading us an already good player for RJ Barrett?

RJ stinks right now. But he might be like Randle good in a couple seasons. I don’t know what to do. I think the right decision if you prioritized short term team building would be to move RJ for someone like OG, who can play defense and is at least okay on offense. That gives you a starting 5 with 3 plus defenders, Randle who isn’t as bad as he looks, and a disaster playing PG. You can make an excellent defense out of that. If Randle keeps hitting 3s we’d be pretty good on offense too, and maybe in range of being a real contender if say IQ gets better or we get one more guy who can help the team score.

But that’s a fantasy. Toronto isn’t giving us OG for RJ and a poo poo platter of picks so I don’t know what other guys would fit in

Seems like the play to me is to try to “sell high” on RJ after he looked competent in a few playoff games.

After doing a deep dive into the new CBA, I agree with this 100%.

How quickly Leon adapts to the new CBA will be huge.

I love this new CBA, btw. It’s designed to create a system of one star and one sidekick per team.

That’s great for us bc a) we need a star, and b) in Brunson we have best priced sidekick in the league. He’s a max player making non max money.

But it’s critical we don’t end up with RJ, Hart, and IQ each making over $20mm. The overpaid middle class is gonna get squeezed and if we’re left holding the bag on them, we’re fucked

Thanks for the advice, guys. I’m a Yankees fan, so the quality of the game doesn’t matter. But everything I’ve heard says that the experience and the food at Citi Field are vastly better than at that sterile shopping mall in the Bronx.

You know what the best trade I can think of for RJ is, btw? You’re gonna laugh but it makes sense…

RJ to San Antonio for the incinerated remains of the 19th pick.

But everything I’ve heard says that the experience and the food at Citi Field are vastly better than at that sterile shopping mall in the Bronx.

They are both sterile shopping malls. Mets fans are just happier about it bc their mall is an upgrade from what they had, whereas the Yankees’ mall is a downgrade from what they had.

Took the kids to the new Spiderman movie. Holy shit that is an insanely complicated plot. Since when are six year olds supposed to understand multiple dimensions?

I don’t know what to do with RJ/JR. Brock take the wheel.

I like Citi Field. Way way better than Shea. And we have reached the nostalgic for malls stage right?

New Yankees stadium is a fine enough place to sit and watch a baseball game but the food is embarrassingly awful. They are stuck in like 1996.

Time for my almost nightly comment about how amazing Aaron Judge is.

I thought the new SpiderVerse movie was fantastic. But then my son is 18, so we had fun talking about it after. Great writing and brilliant animation.

Also, yes, Aaron Judge is pretttyy pretttyy good
