It got lost last night in the shuffle of both Game 1 and the neverending Hustlebunny Discourse:

    @espn_macmahon
Adam Silver on Ja Morant: “We’ve uncovered a fair amount of additional information. We probably could have brought it to a head now, but we’ve made the decision that it would be unfair to these players and these teams to announce that decision in the middle of this series.”

This seems Very Bad to me. If it was just a minor punishment, Silver would have announced it by now. This has to be extreme for him to fear that news of it would upstage the Finals.

Also, I can’t exactly be mad at Phil for not picking a guy whom every other team in the league also passed on. And many of us were doing cartwheels over the Cleanthony Early pick as a potential steal. But it will never not be hilarious to me that Big Chief Triangle passed over perhaps the most Triangle-y player of all time.

I’ve always hated the Celtics but I always loved Larry Bird,
Jokic’s BB-IQ makes me drool, just like Larry Legend’s…

Nice game, Miami never die but they never really threatened, they looked disarmed against Denver’s size (and a team able to exploit missmatches) and Murray’s a great sidekick for the Joker.

    Martin and Strus 1-17 combined.
I remember Pelton saying something about “complementary players” being usually better at home than on the road…
Vincent on the other end did his job and so did Highsmith.
But Miami can’t win without Butler doing his Playoffs Jimmy things…

    More Silver on Ja:

This next part was the most damning.

“I guess in hindsight, I don’t know,” Silver continued. “If it had been a 12-game suspension instead of an eight-game suspension, would that have mattered? … It seemed appropriate at the time. That’s all I can say. Maybe by definition, to the extent we’ve all seen the video that it appears he’s done it again, I guess you could say maybe not. But I don’t think we yet know what it will take to change his behavior. (It’s the) same thing I said at the time; he seems to be a fine young man. In terms of my dealings with him, I think he’s clearly made some mistakes, but he’s young, and I’m hoping now —once we conclude at the end of our process what the appropriate discipline is, that it’s not just about the discipline, it’s about now what we, the Players Association, his team and he and the people around him are going to do to create better circumstances going forward.”

    From: https://theathletic.com/4574264/2023/06/02/ja-morant-adam-silver-nba-suspension/

I think Silver unintentionally did exactly what he didn’t want to do.

I am unreasonably torn with this series:
    1. I HATE MIAMI
    2. I love Jimmy Butler & Coach Spo
    3. Not a Nuggets fan.
    4. Love Jokic’s game
    5. From MD and a Georgetown fan so I also love Uncle Jeffy
    6. Also..isn’t Malone an ex-Knicks assistant?

    *sigh*
Just gonna have to find a way to enjoy this series lol

Yeah, Malone was an assistant in the early 2000s under JVG, Don Chaney, Herb Williams, Lenny Wilkens, and then Herb again. And his dad Brendan was an assistant coach for part of that period, as well as a few stints in the 80s and 90s.

It won’t be popular with the fan base, but Leon should look to dump Randle and RJ in consecutive years, starting with Randle this year.

Look, he had a “good” year, but it still wasn’t on the level of a first or even second banana on a good playoff team. He obviously sorted out his shot chart, and that’s great, but with those minutes and usage, a lot of players could put up his somewhat above average numbers.

So maybe he could be a good third banana? Possibly, but he would need to focus more on his defense, making good reads, crashing the glass, and improving his three pointer. Both finals teams have shown that, rather than a “big 3”, having a primary star surrounded by excellent shooters/willing defenders is the way to go.

Both Randle and RJ have that me-first mentality, and I just don’t see them 1. losing that attitude or 2. having the right tools to become super role players.

Doesn’t sound good on Ja. Would be a shame for him to throw his career away. It just seems so out of character with how he has presented himself. The whole thing is strange.

I think if I am the Heat I would feel pretty good about my chances in game 2. Strus/Robinson/Martin probably won’t go 2-23 again and we know Jimmy can play better.

Jokic is a marvel. The way he racks up numbers is incredible. What I love about him is that he so clearly doesn’t give a shit about his own numbers, just the team. It’s clearly infectious. He doesn’t need to shoot or to grab rebounds that are going out of bounds. He is locked in and seems to have no ego about anything. I love it.

And obviously down to trade Randle and RJ. The biggest thing I have learned from years of following b-ball stats is that being a two way player is hugely valuable. Randle and RJ are not two way players.

This seems Very Bad to me. If it was just a minor punishment, Silver would have announced it by now. This has to be extreme for him to fear that news of it would upstage the Finals.

My bet is that he’ll be suspended for the season. And frankly, it’s very serious when a player repeats a behavior that got him punished already.

If we can trade RJ and Randle for a better player, i think all KB will be behind that trade, but probably trading them for a good return is easier said than done.

Yeah, I think Ja is out for the season. It probably would take that much to make him understand the issue.

Shams says Phoenix is hiring Frank Vogel. But also:

    @BillSimmons
I’m taking the L. Was Kevin Young for a couple weeks, then Ishbia decided he wanted someone splashier and more experienced and shifted gears. What’s interesting is Booker was pushing hard for KY. But Vogel is an excellent coach. Can’t wait to find out what happened.

I guess the coaching carousel stops with Doc unemployed? Or have I forgotten about an opening?

As for trading Julius and RJ, it would be hard to replace Julius’s production, and he has shown he can be an excellent defender. Of course, most of the time he is not, and there are the other issues.

RJ, hasn’t put together a single stretch of positive play for more than 20 games in four years. I’m glad he didn’t stink in the playoffs, and yes, he’s 22 and could get better, but he had a very, very long way to go, and few tools that gives me the confidence he’ll get there. But for the same reason, I doubt there are a lot of GMs eager to chase him.

So…I don’t expect a lot of movement this off-season, even though the clock is ticking.

Wrote some idle Friday rumination about Aaron Gordon and Julius Randle but the site ate it. Not game-changing enough to repeat it. You may thank the site for its censorship of pointless drivel.

It won’t be popular with the fan base, but Leon should look to dump Randle and RJ in consecutive years, starting with Randle this year.

Maybe I am harping on the word dumped, but it sounds like you want to unload salary or get picks.

With Brunson’s emergence, we are past that point. If you can trade RJ for a big who can stretch the floor, do it bc it helps the team. But don’t just dump RJ bc you don’t like him.

OMG, pointless drivel would be a first around here, right? Right? 😀

We’ve seen that both Julius and RJ can be two-way players. They just aren’t with any consistency. When RJ is defending well, he seems to be genuinely good at it, where Julius is more a case of someone who’s just not hurting you on that end (plus his defensive rebounding is hugely useful). But at this point, you can’t rely on either to suddenly be focused every night like that.

Hubert is right, though, that neither is going out for picks and prospects. If we trade one or both, it will be to materially upgrade our chances in the here and now.

Ugh. Someone just pointed out that today is the 30th anniversary of The Charles Smith Game — the rare instance of that phrasing referring to a role player having a nightmarish game rather than a shockingly good one.

Be right back. I’m gonna go gargle with bleach.

OMG, pointless drivel would be a first around here, right? Right? 😀

I strive to keep my drivel entirely on point!

I disagree these guys clear the two way player bar. Both are negative defenders. RJ certainly is. He’s the worst regular in the NBA on stocks rate. He is slow. There are some matchups that work but for the most part he is terrible.

Julius does help on the boards. He is a tough guy to back down in the post and uses his strength well in certain matchups. Overall though he offers very little rim protection and rarely challenges shots well.

It’s hard for guys who expend a lot of energy scoring. That’s what makes true two way players special.

I don’t think we can trade either of them for anything good but I wish we could. That’s the right way to say it.

I don’t think we can trade either of them for anything good but I wish we could. That’s the right way to say it.

    Agreed

I still think the Detroit pick will convey at some point, but since a lot of you think otherwise, would it be a good idea to offer the pick back for this year’s pick #31?

Interesting summer ahead. They’ll have a new GM, which actually could mean something. Perry likely didn’t have much pull; the new guy (Rosas, probably) may have significantly more.

As to JR and RJ, I’m just going to wait and see if they’re shopped and, if so, what their market is. I’m not against the parlor game of predicting it in advance; I just don’t really have a strong care in advance. Neither are remotely untouchable and I concur with the consensus that neither is going to be moved for draft picks/prospects and that those days, for better or worse, are over.

That’s a smart trade, Cyber. But I’d only do it if #31 was on the clock and there was a player we definitely wanted.

I’m in no rush to move that pick bc it could become valuable down the road. Now it lacks the full value of a 1st, but that could change easily in 2 years if the Piston kids develop and they spend some money in free agency.

Who knows if that will happen, though? Certainly know GM worth his salt would assume it will. It’s basically a scratch off ticket. Worth less than all firsts, more than all seconds.

By “dumping” I more mean trading for assets not just cap space, but a realistic trade. Something like Randle for a role player like Jaden McDaniels and a mid-to-late first would be perfectly cromulent.

I generally like Leon, but I still think he’s undervaluing draft picks.

That said, I’m also not against giving Randle and RJ a chance to round into form next year. It seems unlikely that they will, but I’ll still root for them.

I think most people agree the DET pick is likely to convey at some point, it’s the WAS pick for which there’s real doubt. So I definitely wouldn’t trade the DET pick for #31. I mean even in the event it doesn’t convey it turns into two 2nds, so that would be another incineration.

I’ve been trying to figure out a trade with Portland since they appear desperate to improve the team around Lillard instead of rebuilding but I can’t come up with anything realistic that improves the Knicks immediately.

I’m salivating over that #3 pick. Might be available at a discount.

I mean even in the event it doesn’t convey it turns into two 2nds, so that would be another incineration.

Getting the best second round pick today for two seconds in the future is an incineration?

Also worth noting it only converts to one 2nd round pick, not two.

Also worth noting it only converts to one 2nd round pick, not two.

Yeah, it’s the Washington pick that converts into two 2nd rd picks, if it doesn’t convey until 2026. The Detroit pick converts into a single 2nd rd pick, if it doesn’t convey until 2027.

To this day for me the Charles Smith game is still the toughest, most disheartening loss I’ve dealt with as a Knicks fan.

It was brutal but I think the finger roll was worse.

Over time I have come to realize that we would have lost the next two games against Jordan anyway.

But the finger roll… we would have won that series. It was easy AF. And it was Ewing, not some bum.

Also how bad is it that we even have two to compare?

Although I guess maybe the Smith one was worse because back then we actually had hope. When Ewing missed the finger roll in ’95, we all knew it spared us watching the Knicks get pummeled by Shaq.

I take it back, BBA and Owen are right.

    Charles Smith…
    I couldn’t believe watching it then, I still can’t believe it now…

    Wowsers
I thought for sure Phoenix would go for Doc or Young with a locker room that has CP3, Booker, and KD. If the combination of CP3 and Doc can’t keep the team steady as they go through ups and downs, I don’t know who else available that can. OTOH- Vogel won a chip with LeBron and AD, albeit in the bubble. So maybe this is a good hire for them?

Budz in TOR? Maybe Clifford moves on(since he was practically a last choice hire) and Charlotte pounces on Doc or Budz? Doc’s done well as a TV analyst before, so maybe he sits out a year or 2. This coaching cycle has been different for sure..if not weird

Portland is tricky to partner with because they don’t have a lot of disposable salary to match up. The players that make a lot are the ones they need to keep to be good, and the other players don’t add up to that much as it currently stands. They have nice chips with Sharpe and the #3 but that only gets them in the door. It will be interesting to see what kid of improvement they can actually close on.

Also how bad is it that we even have two to compare?

    And we haven’t even gotten to Reggie’s 8 points in 7 seconds, Reggie’s 25 point 4th quarter, or Johnny shooting 2-18 yet…

And if Portland is going to trade that pick, it will be because they are trying to go all-in on Dame while he’s still All-NBA caliber. So they’re not trading the #3 for a bunch of future draft picks and maybe a few promising younger players. They want pieces that can help them win immediately. Even though Randle is better than Jerami Grant, they’d basically be redundant. Portland would have to really believe in RJ and/or IQ (and/or that Obi will vastly improve in an offense that uses him properly) to want to make a deal with us. The supply and demand just doesn’t seem to match.

I know how much you want Scoot, E, but I think it has only a slightly better chance of happening than Playoff Vildoza.

I think the Knicks had a very good chance in 1995 to beat Orlando, Pacers took them 7 and I’m sure at the minimum Knicks would’ve done the same. But yeah I’ll never be mad at Ewing for missing that shot especially since in Game 5 he hit the winner and had a great Game 7 playing on one leg.

1993 though man that was the chance to beat Jordan.

Charles Smith trying to hit that putback was like RJ doing one of his doomed forays against Timelord … only if RJ was 6-11 and Timelord was 6-6.

Okay, let’s just do it. Trade Julius and RJ for Jerami, Shaedon, and Scoot.

Sounds like there is a very good chance that Young remains as a lead assistant basically in charge of the offense, so that sounds almost like the best of both worlds for Phoenix, no?

Okay, let’s just do it. Trade Julius and RJ for Jerami, Shaedon, and Scoot.

Only if they throw in Cam.

Charles Smith was soft as Charmin.

    BIG FACTZ!!!

FYI I’m going to Yankees/Dodgers on Sunday!

What did Ja Morant do to get suspended for a year?

Pointing a gun at the Pacers bus. Although it is previous to the Instagram videos, they probably have reviewed that based on those.

Losing McDaniel and Riley affected knicks fans lives forever imo
Hiring Rick Brunson was Michael and Gabriel angels hanging out on MSG roof

If Ja pointed a gun at another team’s bus, and at the time that seemed like a possibility, that would be quite bad.

Feels like a half season has to be the minimum.
