I worry that now that Dallas’ odds of making the play-in are so low, Luka and Kyrie might just get shut down. That’s why I was rooting for Utah last night.

I worry that now that Dallas’ odds of making the play-in are so low, Luka and Kyrie might just get shut down. That’s why I was rooting for Utah last night.

it’s a risk. but cheer up. tonight is the second annual ‘i feel slovenia night’ in dallas. if lauri is going to boot camp, luka probably wants to play.

“Okay, so now that OKC has defeated the Jazz, we now want OKC to lose its remaining game?”

I say yes. I don’t think there is much difference between the 11th or 12th pick, so whatever helps us get the pick to convey to us is a good thing. The only things left to root for:
DAL beats CHI (who has nothing to play for and might benefit if they lose)
DAL wins its last game vs. SAS
OKC loses to MEM (who probably will have nothing to play for and might rest everyone)
CHI loses to DET (who has no reason to lose, they already have the worst record locked up)

But the most imperative of all of these games is tonight’s DAL vs. CHI matchup. It’s a home game for DAL against a team with zero on the line and play-in games coming, so they would literally have to roll over to lose. Winning that game would *almost* guarantee that DAL would have at least a coin flip for the #10 pick *unless* the Bulls won two play-in games on the road.

One other thing if DAL wins is that both DAL and OKC play on Sunday afternoon, so at least DAL would have a reason to try to win going into that game. I would think that Mark Cuban is aware of this, and if OKC looks like they are going to beat a resting MEM team, DAL might pull the plug at halftime.

Kevin Knox is doing his best to convince the Blazers to take his option for next year.

I wish the kid the best.

Anyway Kev, you can be a superstar in Europe, think about it… 😉

DAL might pull the plug at halftime.

That could set up the Frank revenge game…

You know, I recall that when Kevin Knox was drafted, it was reported that he was considered a project and would take a while to develop as a player. I thought, ok, it might take a couple of years. But it looks like it took five years. Of course, as a Knicks fan I didn’t have much opportunity of watching picks develop, so I didn’t have an experience base to think differently. But now I think five years isn’t so abnormal for young players. Maybe Knox really will be pretty good one day.

You guys keep trying to deny what i predicted, but probably it’ll be in vain. Dallas will win the remaining 2 games. 😛 And i hope OKC does it too, because i fear Dallas will go to the playoffs if they reach the play-in and then the pick would be 15th or 16th in that case. Either way, i’m feeling great that (most likely) we’ll have a pick, be it 11th, 12th, 15th or 16th.

Re: Knox, the end of the season is extended garbage time for some teams, like Portland. I wouldn’t conclude that Knox has turned the corner until i see him doing this consistently when games really matter. I haven’t seen him in Portland, is he a better defender than before? Because if he’s still at the level of defense that he was on the Knicks (very bad), he won’t have a future in this league.

Has anyone cared to go to BRef and see Knox’s stats outside his most recent game? I did and in the 9 games that he’s playing consistent time (26 MPG), he’s at FG% .425, 3P% .267, FT% .667 and except 5.1 rebounds per game he has nothing else going for him. I don’t think he has turned a corner even in the extended garbage time that this Blazers games to end the season are.

Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina, and Cam Reddish have combined for nearly 15,000 minutes and a -12.0 BPM. They are the very scrubbiest of all the lottery scrubs who have ever donned the orange and blue, or any other NBA uniform. But hey, they’re still young!

I don’t know if Knox will be good, but I worry more about his defense than his shooting. His career three point percentage is 34%. Not star material, but ok. He’s only taken 53 three point shots this year and made 15 of them. If he’d made three more of them he’d match his career average. That’s not really significant statistically.

I’ve given up on Ntilikina (he seems to have regressed under Kidd), I have no idea about Reddish, but I still have some hope for Knox to be a serviceable backup.

Glad Knox has developed from worst player in the league into only maybe the worst player in the league

“Kevin Knox, Frank Ntilikina, and Cam Reddish have combined for nearly 15,000 minutes and a -12.0 BPM. They are the very scrubbiest of all the lottery scrubs who have ever donned the orange and blue, or any other NBA uniform. But hey, they’re still young!”

    Don’t forget RJ’s -2.4 after 9000 minutes. It’s not much better.

I sometimes wonder if we could have pushed for the Mavs pick to be unprotected in the Porzingis trade. I mean they had Luka at that point, I don’t think anyone believed they’d be less than a perennial playoff team.

So I guess a shrewd move by Dallas, but it sure would be nice to not sweat out the pick with these final few games.

I hope Mavs’ players will know what’s up when Mark Cuban uncharacteristically offers team dinner in the locker room later.

It does, and my guess is that Cuban would have caved. But in reality, none of us expected that even an unprotected pick would convey in the top 10 while Doncic was on the team, so kicking out the pick for another year is not the worst outcome in the world.

They got way less than market value for Porzingis. I mean, they just did. It’s barely debatable. You guys are awesome, KB is awesome, we’re all awesome, but it’s the current nature of things that the herd mentality and its curated internet overreaction sometimes kick in on questions of this type … and this is one of those times. This is absolutely, positively one of those times.

As the old saying goes, it is what it is. We move on. Playoffs beckon.

Some thoughts about what’s left of the regular season:
    1. The east seems settled, with only Heat and Raptors with a little chance to pass the team ahead, but i don’t think it’ll happen as Nets have an easy game hosting Orlando (more on them later) to shut down Heat’s chances, and Raptors have a tough schedule (@BOS, vs MIL) to pass Atlanta.
    2. Out west, only the Top4 teams are settled, and then there’s 5 teams that can all go 5th through 9th in the end!? Wolves have little chances to be Top6 and Clippers to be lower than 7th, but still just having 5 teams fighting for 5 positions and having the chance to be in every position is bonkers! 🙂
    3. I have a feeling Clippers and Warriors would prefer to be 6th to play the Kings instead of being 5th and playing CP3, Book and KD’s Suns, but it’s a tight race and they probably can’t think about it. Specifically the Warriors would probably be ecstatic to play the Kings as a 88 mile drive to Sacramento will turn the series into a 7 game home stand. 😛
    4. Since i asked what was Portland doing, they’ve doing the perfect tank and will get the best position that they could aim as late tankers (5th).
    5. Then there’s the 3 teams out of the play-in in the east (Pacers, Wizards and Magic) all tied at 34-46 that’ll be interesting to follow. We used to be here and we used to lose the race. Oh, the good times! 😀
    6. I don’t think there’s games where both teams would try to lose, except one. Wizards host the Rockets to end the season and probably both would prefer to lose, the Rockets to be 2nd alone avoiding a tie with the Spurs, and Wizards to not lose the tie for 6th falling to the 8th best odds. One of these 2 teams will be Mo NDour’ed! 😀

E, I agreed at the time (and so did many others) that we got less than we could have for KP, even with the relatively tight window. The counterargument was that KP was grossly overvalued relative to his productivity and we got a fair return. I think that both POVs actually aged pretty well. At the end of the day, it definitely turned out better than I had feared because KP has largely sucked for the entirety of DAL’s contract and was traded in disgrace as an admission that it was a terrible deal for them. But in the moment, to this day I feel like we could have gotten more in return for the “hype” of KP, even with the ACL.

Beyond that, I don’t think you get that the contention of some sort of “herd mentality” here at KB is insulting, intentionally (my guess) or not. Just because folks agree on things doesn’t mean that they are not coming to their conclusions independently. Frankly, it’s sort of a bobneptune-ish thing to say.

As always, the sin wasn’t trading KP. It was essentially using KP as a sweetener to unload other contracts to clear cap space for signing two guys who went to Brooklyn instead. And even then, it might have been okay if we’d insisted on Brunson as the young player, rather than DSJ.

    @ShamsCharania
Bucks star Khris Middleton underwent an MRI on his knee Thursday and he is expected to rehab for the next week or so in hopes of being ready for start of the playoffs, sources say.

    Not great news for Milwaukee.

We put Julius Randle and Marcus Morris into the cap space. Marcus Morris led to IQ. Quentin Grimes was selected with the first pick & we are about to get an 11th pick with the second one.

I, Hubert of the Herd, stand by my assessment that it was an excellent return.

A real mystery why the Knicks couldn’t get anything more for an injury prone player who had never done anything in the league, was an inefficient chucker about to miss a year and a half of basketball with a torn ACL, and going to get paid the max didn’t fetch a superstar package. The Knicks must’ve fucked up.

But at least KP played 60 great games this year after getting salary dumped. Right on time to get another max deal.

some notes on knicks-cavs jan 24. this is the game when mitchell missed at the rim aganst ihart to lose by 2.

start with the cavs on defense

okoro guarded brunson every second they were both in and was extremely effective. they doubled brunson on the 1st play (he drew a foul anyway) but less so after. although mobley was mostly guarding randle, he regularly strayed very far off him to help, almost like he was jjj guarding herb jones. randle, in turn, hit 8-12 from 3, mostly offball — that shooting was the difference in a game where the cavs otherwise outplayed the knicks. the knicks were missing mitch and of course hart. mobley was actually very good against randle on ball and as a helper inside. allen also guarded randle at times and did pretty well. randle was mostly a high volume off-ball player in this game.

the cavs started both halves with garland on rj but then quickly switched to mitchell on rj, garland on grimes. they would help when he iso posted against garland, but mostly let mitchell guard him. rj has some advantages against mitchell but overall it’s a honeytrap for us. levert guarded brunson with okoro out and he is far less effective. kevin love is also a problem for them on defense on almost every play he is in. mitchell on grimes is not great for them because he back cuts and mitchell cheats and wanders a lot. iq looks pretty comfortable on offense against all of levert, garland, mitchell, but mitchell is not a crazy mismatch for him. okoro didn’t guard him. overall it was a bad offensive game for us masked by insane randle 3pt shooting and kevin love’s acute struggles. but we didn’t have mitch and sims was an offensive albatross. at the end of the game, we tried harder to get mitchell to switch onto brunson but rarely succeeded. when we did, brunson went at him every time.

rj tried to iso almost every cav at least once, and outside of garland it was usually a bad idea. the most striking attempt was against mobley, where he looked like he might be good for a 30% or so TS in the long run. using just this one game, okoro’s health seems pretty important for the cav’s defense in this series. we didn’t go to randle to initiated very much against either mobley or allen.

    (continued…)

I dunno, maybe you could have squeezed more value out of KP at the time, that’s a reasonably fair critique, but it panned out just fine. He wasn’t worth the megamax contract he got, and he also appears to be an asshole who is almost impossible to root for. Finally managed to play 2000 minutes this year though!

I wouldn’t want to be part of a contract that starts at age 28 for that guy. Seems pretty likely we’ve just seen his career year.

The only thing I will add to the KP return debate is the history of Mills acting too quickly when faced adversity—panicking by signing THJ and hustlebunny after Phil left, filling all our cap space almost immediately after KD spurned us, and faced with KP’s brother’s ultimatum, trading him very very soon thereafter.

If Randle is out, I’m wondering if the Cavs just stick Mobley on Brunson (assuming Okoro misses games).

Or they’ll just plant Mobley in the paint and dare Obi to hit 3s.

Wow, the idea of clusters of internet “herding” is insulting?? It certainly wasn’t intended that way and it’s hardly an original observation. It’s not even really all that interesting an observation.

In any event, not really worth re-litigating. Steve Mills sucked and the KP fiasco was in the direct spirit of his general suckitude. He basically had a hissy fit and panicked. And then, as a natural result, got completely rolled.

It’s four years ago and playoffs beckon.

    (2)

    knicks on defense

we were deadset on having grimes on mitchell as much as possible. so much so that when bickerstaff suddenly subbed mitchell and garland in for the last possession of the first, thibs lassoed grimes off the bench to guard him. grimes did a solid job on mitchell. he’s not a mitchell kryptonite the way okoro looked against brunson on this one night, just solid. several times late in the game the cavs got iq to switch onto mitchell by screening with garland. iq was fine against mitchell, though he hit a couple of contested step back threes. on the critical last play, they got randle to switch onto mitchell and mitchell beat him right, but slowly enough to allow for help.

the knicks were keeping rj on garland and brunson hiding on okoro. rj on garland is a pretty bad matchup for us defensively and reliably got us into tough spots. the fact is we don’t have a great matchup for garland, as even iq is not really born for that job. when randle played mobley the cavs did not go at it at all, but the few times they got obi on him (not by design, thibs was hiding mobley on stevens and putting ihart on mobley) the cavs went at him. deuce does guard mitchell for a few possessions with grimes out (and rj and iq in) and looks pretty decent against him.

jarrett allen hurts us quite a bit inside, especially on his rolls, both with sims and ihart in the game, but especially the former. mitch would have helped. randle as is the way of the world was just not there as a help defender at the rim. and garland often forced our 5 to help.

overall the defense looked pretty good considering we were missing mitch and hart. grimes is a decent mitchell defender, though we don’t really have an answer for garland. i think iq could be okay, but i don’t think josh hart changes much on that front. rj on garland isn’t great. mobley was very passive and his offense started to pick up a lot more late in the season.

Anyone who thinks the Warriors would have a home court advantage playing in Sacto is probably too young to remember what that place is like when they have a good team.

***Kevin Knox is doing his best to convince the Blazers to take his option for next year.***

The Blazers are 6-19 since the deadline. They went from being securely in the play-in to falling swiftly out of contention, despite having a guy literally scoring 70 points a game during that fall. If Brian’s cousin is convinced that what he’s seen deserves an encore next season, then lolPortland is the new Knicks.

Wish me luck today, KB. I’m doing a songwriting session on which we’re going to be writing stuff to pitch directly to one of the biggest artists in the world. Like top 5 in the world big. This is an extremely fortunate situation to be in, as I’m pretty much guaranteed that this massive artist is personally going to hear whatever we create today.

If I get some cuts on this record it’s going to be life changing. Fingers crossed!

If it’s Lana del Rey, tell her Ricky from Queen’s Court says hi and that I’m disappointed she ghosted me after she went on SNL for the first time.

Anyone who thinks the Warriors would have a home court advantage playing in Sacto is probably too young to remember what that place is like when they have a good team.

Sacto fans are going to go nuts.

It’s not Lana. But I will say: that song “A&W” from her new record is fucking brilliant. My favorite song of the year probably.

If it’s Lana del Rey, tell her Ricky from Queen’s Court says hi and that I’m disappointed she ghosted me after she went on SNL for the first time.

You should tell them this even if it isn’t Lana

fame is nothing more than the sum of misunderstandings gathering around a new name

Go JK! If it’s “T Swift” as Jackdaw calls her, which I’m being forced to listen to in the car of late, feel free to write something that’s not whiny and self-absorbed. Just for a change.

Anyone else wondering about the Suns being 8-0 with Durant?

JK, as long as you expunge the 94 classic Go New York Go from your memory I suspect you may nail it. Good luck!

Oh, FFS: “Kyrie Irving (right foot injury recovery), Josh Green (rest), Tim Hardaway Jr. (left ankle soreness), Maxi Kleber (right hamstring injury recovery) and Christian Wood (rest) will all miss tonight’s game against the Bulls.”

oh wow – so excited for you JK 🙂

of course, be yourself (the best version at least), and be confident…

carry something on your person that will ground you – a toy from your son, rosary beads – something to act as a talisman to help you remember who you are…maybe it’s a certain pic on your phone…

every once in a while, grab hold and connect with that thing to stay present and connected…

Anyone else wondering about the Suns being 8-0 with Durant?

They’re gonna be scary. But I’ll also say they’ve beaten the Spurs, the Hornets, the Kyrie Mavs, and twice beat a Joker-less Nuggets.

I guess we did need OKC to lose. Maybe Luka can pull it out by himself against a Bulls team that’s supposedly also resting

I have been a Dallas Cowboys fan since Darrell Green tracked Tony Dorsett down and robbed me of my excitement lol…but today? FUCK DALLAS

Bastards. They are purposely avoiding giving us the 1st they owe us. I hope the lottery gods see this fuckery and hands us #11 so we can draft someone like Gradey(yeah..not calling him by his last name lol).

Nowadays, Cuban makes me glad Dolan runs the Knicks

A&W is a killer song, I feel vindicated that someone who knows so much more music than me also shares the same opinion lol.

    Good luck JK!

Good Luck, JK! Thanks for the detailed post about Knicks-D, ptmilo. I hope Thibs is reading.

***This is an extremely fortunate situation to be in, as I’m pretty much guaranteed that this massive artist is personally going to hear whatever we create today. If I get some cuts on this record it’s going to be life changing.***

You finally secured a meeting with Dolan and you’re going to spend it pitching him songs??? Winning has softened you.

Best of luck JK, the mystery artist would be lucky to have ya.

Maybe it’s just my saltiness talking but I genuinely think if you have Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving (and might not have the latter next year) you should uh try to make the fucking playoffs! Pathetic.

Really good stuff pt, it sounds like we can throw a pretty good cast of characters at Mitchell. Of course, he’s the kind of guy who can be defended perfectly and still give you an efficient 40. RJ’s role in this series will be fascinating in a perhaps-not-so-good way. I mean, if he’s not adding value on either end are we really going to keep playing him for “development?” We’re probably looking to trade him this offseason! Wouldn’t shock me if he has a ~19 minute game(s) at some point.

During the time Porzingis would’ve been signed to a max contract for us, he played 216 of a possible 311 games. The transaction tree we got from him is a minor miracle. Literally the only good thing the Perry/Mills regime did.

I mean, 30 GMs are probably taking Quickley alone over that putz.

I really think Luka is enough tonight. So things will work out. If he sat, then yeah, shenanigans, but he’s playing.

The interesting thing is that the Bulls get their pick if it finishes in the Top 4, so they have a good reason to want to be the 10th pick, right? Much better odds than #11 (neither are good odds, but definitely better).

San Antonio can also still tie Houston for the second-worst record, so they’ll be inclined to want to lose to Dallas in the final game. Meanwhile, Detroit has no reason not to try to win against Chicago in their finale. Things are still looking very good for the Knicks getting the Dallas pick!

Looks like the sports books still have the Mavs favored. Either that’s a great money making opportunity or perhaps the dream is still alive.

If not, there’s always a 20% chance they get jumped

@jk I hear I-III-VI-IV is a popular change. I just keep in mind that if you use it I expect 50% of your royalties.

Jk, JK. You already got this. In a solid state universe it’s already happened.

@ptmilo appreciate the analysis. At full strength these teams should have a lot of options. Okoro is key. And RJ not getting too many minutes….

JK, if it’s Dua Lipa, can you pitch her the lead role in my film production “One Night With Ess-Dog”? Thanks…

    Mercus Morris.

I hate myself for not having thought of that two years ago.

My sister in law is obsessed with Bad Bunny so I hope JK hooks him up with a good beat!

    Rokas Update:

I’m just back from watching him play live for the second time.

What can I say? I knew that by numbers (and from what I’ve seen on TV) he isn’t having a good season so I can’t be too disappointed, but…

He played around 15-16 minutes (most of the 2nd, the end of the 3rd, and the last, mostly meaningless, minutes of the 4th) missed all his FGs (0-4 2FG, 0-1 3FG) and half of his FTs (2-4), grabbed some rebounds and dished some good passes.
    And Barcelona lost 🙂

Passing was his stronger skill last year and it still is, defense looks like last year, shooting is still meh.

To sum it up, a year after my first “eye-test” I couldn’t see any progress.

I can be totally wrong and maybe he’s saving his best for the Association, but right now to trying to be in competition for an end-of-rotation spot (for instance with Deuce) he needs to raise his level by at least a couple of notches and I don’t know if he has it.

RJ’s role in this series will be fascinating in a perhaps-not-so-good way.

it’s not an ideal spot for him, especially if you try to stick him on garland as we did so often in the regular season. you could even imagine an adjustment where thibs goes for deuce in select spots on garland (he was decent against him in a couple of games) instead and sits rj a bit more. i don’t think he’s ideal on mitchell, but i think he’s more useful spelling grimes on mitchell than he is on garland.

on offense rj can be effective posting garland if he is willing to pass liberally on the double. he has to kick the urge to attack allen or mobley on perimeter switches. they can also get him going left downhill with mitch on those motion dhos at the nail, especially if levert is on him and only one of allen/mobley is in. it would be a huge bonus if he could help get one of their bigs in foul trouble a couple of times, but it seems like a lot to hope for. better goal might be do no harm.

better goal might be do no harm.

    I agree PT.

He enters the series as our weak link so while I know is “settle for little” I’d be okay with RJ just being “neutral” with everything above it being gravy.

So DeRozan, LaVine and Beverley are all out vs. the Mavs tonight.

    Should be a helluva game…

This is getting ridiculous, according to McMahon Luka will play only the 1st quarter and then sit.

Meanwhile RJ Barrett is a game time decision (again!).

    Bulls vs. Mavs

On that fateful day, Dr. Liston was performing another leg amputation. As he moved with lightning speed, he accidentally cut off the fingers of the assistant who had been holding the patient down. Then as he brought his knife back up, he slashed the coat of a spectator.

The spectator fell over, dying immediately of fright. Though the assistant and patient survived the immediate procedure, they died not long after from infection. Thus, despite Dr. Liston’s successes, he became the only surgeon in known history to have a 300% mortality rate from a single operation.

Interesting that the Ringer 125 best NBA players has RJ at 105. Between KCP and Portis. With Grimes at 115.

RJ’s description is “Committed driver still waiting on the rest of his game to catch up—and on the Knicks to give him real room to operate.” As if it’s somehow the Knicks’ fault that he sucks.

It does suggest that the rest of the league hasn’t quite caught up with reality. Which gives hope that he might still be useful in a trade.

I wish RJ was less of a committed driver, if he passed once in awhile it might fix the alleged spacing issue

would have been exquisite if cuban had won his protest and then failed to successfully tank the rerun

Reggie Bullock pulling the Ndour tonight will officially reverse the curse on the Knick franchise.

I’m not young, but i’m not feeling that the days of Chris Webber,
Mike Bibby, Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic are back. Maybe they need another season or two to feel really confident about their potential. Or maybe they’ll step up in the playoffs and bring that atmosphere back. But for now i’m not feeling it. And the Warriors were bad at the time of those very good Kings’ teams, so if it happens we’ll see how many Warriors fans make the short trip there.

Best of luck, JK. I hope you can be on the record. 😉 Does life changing means you’re going to buy the Knicks at some point? 😀
