    Once again the Knicks’ weren’t ready for an inferior opponent, they sank in a hole, they didn’t quit (they never do) and were able to climb back and take the lead in the 4th but then collapsed in the clutch, disappointing the home crowd.

    Iso dominated the (starters’) offense and defense was lousy except for a brief Hart Foundation fueled stretch.
    It was a bad loss and Randle’s career night was just lipstick on a pig, clouding the analysis of a very poor team performance.

    Reverse those two awful home losses and the Knicks are 1 game back of the Cavs, instead they’re down 3 (with 9 to go) and now basically the attention shift only on defending the 5th spot.

    Next game is wednesday in Miami and it’s HUGE. I’m confident they’ll be better prepared. And I hope this “it didn’t matter, they’re only bad games” do not come back to haunt us…

    Thoughts:

    – Terrible defensive game, we were a step late on closeout, were unable to stop their basic PnR, were shredded in transition, just a lackadaisical effort.

    – We can’t claim that Prince was out of his mind when one of our player just raised his career high (already in the 40s) by 11 points.
    The difference? Randle’s shots were mostly isos and high-difficult, Prince’s shots were basically catch&shoot open threes (so “better-quality” shots).

    – Yes, we can say that Conley right push shot was lucky, that Reid running sky hook was lucky and so on, but Randle unintentionally banked a three, and aside from that the Wolves drive and kick sliced our listless defense all night long, they took a TON of open shots.

    – When will we learn how to play a decent fastbreak? We botched not one but two consecutive 3-on-1 because Barrett and Randle didn’t know what they must do.

    Stats Of The Game:
    51-83 (61.4%). Wolves shooting %. Our defense helped a lot.
    68-54. Minnesota’s advantage in PiP. I’m in disbelief.

    Randle A
    I’m sad for him that this was a wasted effort.
    Great and efficient offensive performance, crazy shots, molten hot moments, his offensive talent in full display (and we know he has tons of it).
    But now I’m gonna get myself lot of enemies.
    Because we lost. So I don’t give a damn.
    On offense we couldn’t have been in this game without him.
    On defense, a crush test dummy would’ve done a better job (matador D, slow and/or missed rotations).
    Add his low assists (1) and rebounds (4) numbers, including the Wolves’ last offensive board that closed the game, plus his 4 turnovers and this looks like… I don’t know, is “empty calories on steroids” too negative?*
    Then sue me**. šŸ™‚

    23 points, 10:2 AST/TO so a good game? No, an average one and he was abused on defense all night long (the refs had some to say about this).

    Barrett C
    7 points in the first 4 minutes, then he disappeared or did mostly bad things (4 TOs) having totally lost his rhythm.
    Don’t let me start about his defense or lack of reflexes.

    Grimes C-
    One shot (And he hit it!)? 2.2 USG% (!!)?
    The first victim of Randle’s shooting bulimia, invisible in the 1st half, a shade better in the second.

    Robinson C-
    Uh! One missed shot (4.7 USG%), a couple of blocks, some rebounds but 2 unusual turnovers and Gobert drove him to big men summer camp.

    Quickley B-
    First he saved us, he was at the center of the comeback, then he shot us off the game. Plus he made 2 stupid fouls on three pointers.

    Hart B
    His coast-to-coasts, passing and steals/deflections were huge, alas he had a bad turnover and his missed layup with 3 minutes left was our last chance to stop the Wolves momentum (we were up by 3 and he was fouled!).

    Hartenstein B-
    Far from perfect but Plus/Minus’s lying, he was there during our best stretches.

    Toppin C
    Couple of baskets, no three pointers, no defense too (from now on to me he’s “Emmentaler”)

    Thibs C
    You know my personal rules: if a team isn’t ready for a game the blame fall on the coach.
    Many players didn’t help him, but it’s really strange that a “defense and motivations” coach like Thibs could let his team fall so flat two “easy” games in a row.

    * I know he hit a lot of meaningful shots, at the same time something rings dissonant to me, like Grimes’ only shots or RJ’s 8… I don’t know, I feel like the offense didn’t “naturally flow”.

    ** For the record, I have more or less the same position about Bernard’s 60 points Christmas game, with the caveat that the current team is WAY better than the one Bernard carried (Sparrow, P.Cummings, D.Walker, J.Bailey, Orr, Cavenall, E.L. Wilkins, Bannister, B.Carter, Tucker… ouch!) so King was “forced” to dominate the offense.

    2 things that I’ve heard since the game ended that really irritated me:
    1. This was a trap game.
    2. Thibs coached a bad game.

    It being a trap game SOUNDS good because we were at a home against a T-Wolves team sans Anthony Edwards and KAT- and their best credentialed threat was a damn near washed Conley. But this was simply a game where the players decided to half-ass it on defense. Pure and simple. The fact that they underestimated Minny’s ability to score and were probably looking ahead to Miami could make this a trap game. But this team took their foot off the gas. I would prefer them to come out to a roaring start so the main 9 could rest some and let the other guys carry some of the weight. Which brings me to the Thibs point..

    Way too many fans praise Thibs when whe win, only to say he’s a bad coach when we lose. If coaches coached a perfect game, the entire league would be .500. Every coach makes in game mistakes, but I don’t feel like we lost because of Thibs. Yeah you want him to have the troops up for this game, but seeing the defensive effort last night- being up for the game was at least 60% on the players. That does not make Thibs a bad coach. He’s obviously a good coach, and we Knick fans have to live with that. If a clearly better coach shakes loose, we can call for Thibs’ head with where we are on the progress chart. But it makes no sense to suggest that we move on from Thibs- at this point- in favor of an unproven coach. Thibs isn’t absolved though- as Max noted..he coached a C level game..at least in the first half. 2nd half he coached a little better..but not enough to get us over the hump

    And Julius..wowsers! Unstoppable last night. But for the sake of this team stating consistent, I’m gonna go Parcells on his night. Yeah he put the ball in the basket, but where was the defense and his usual rebounding? I understand that type of offensive explosion saps some defensive energy. But Prince shouldn’t be scoring 30 plus against him, and Randle usually gets 4 rebounds in his sleep. The rebounding effort was unacceptable. But that offense was something to behold, so kudos for that. But he has to hold himself accountable on defense. I’m sure he will bounce back on that end against Miami. But in-game, you gotta have pride as a member of a traditionally blue collar team. That’s all.

    All that said..we’re still on a good roll. Last night was pretty much a bump in the road and we didn’t lose grip on the 5th spot. So…on to Miami

    The defense was clearly lacking, but something the other team just doesn’t miss. Next.

    Every team has bad games, and this was one of ours. Let’s hope we bring our A game to Miami. If we win the next game, the Top6 will be almost guaranteed, and if the Cavs win in Brooklyn, the 5th will soon be too.

    Yes on paper we should have won, but if this was “a bad game” where we were down by 13 two different times in the first half, came back to lead in Q4 but lost by 6, and each team made 14 threes, each team had 24 FTs, each team had 7 offensive boards, and each team had 34 total boards–I’ll easily take it.

    Miami is the game that matters–to use football/soccer parlance it is a 6 pointer.

    You need to rest up for a week off?

    I mean, yeah. These guys have been grinding since October. Julius has played every game this season and leads the league in minutes.

    I’m not saying bench everyone for a week before the week off. I’m saying get those legs as fresh as possible for a 7-gamer against the league’s best and slowest defense.

    Felt like every time we had a good momentum RJ would do something stupid.

    They had 10 days off last month, and they only played two games last week. Then they have 4 straight days off next week as they begin a stretch where they play 7 games over 18 days heading into the playoffs.

    Iā€™m all for resting people that legitimately need it, but home court advantage and/or avoiding the 6 seed is probably more important to team success than resting guys just to rest them.

    I think the rest thing is WAY overblown. Resting players, load management, watching starter minutes, etc…it all makes sense over the course of a season so none of your key players get injured.

    But the idea that a player would be tired for the first round after a week off? It’s ridiculous. If Randle isn’t dealing with a nagging injury, he will be able to play just as hard or harder for the playoffs than he would in the regular season. Randle didn’t flame out against Atlanta because he was tired. He flamed out because he couldn’t handle the double teams and there was no legit second option to shoulder that responsibility. He got in his head. He wasn’t tired.

    I hope next season Thibs does go with a 10 man rotation. IT made send to go down to 9 as it turned our season around. But with McBride improving and now HART on the bench, a 10 man rotation will reduce the chance of injuries. But Randle isn’t going to be tired in the first round. If this was really a thing, then by the time the Finals happened all of the starters on the two teams in the finals would be exhausted and throwing up bricks all game.

    I would even posit that pulling starters in regular season games when they’re blowouts probably doesn’t really help keep players fresh. I mean, if you’re up 30 and there’s 10 minutes left in the game and the other team has taken their starters out, then, yes, obviously pull your key players. But again, that’s because of the injury risk.

    I was reading the comments on P&T last week during the Portland game and people were screaming about Thibs not pulling the starters when the game truly was out of reach. He actually tried to but there was no stop in the action. It was around the 3 minute mark. But the thing is…those last 3 minutes the players were literally just walking around the court and not even playing. Randle sitting for 2 minutes on the bench is going to be all that different than Randle just kind of jogging around and not really playing while he’s on the court?

    Why is avoiding the 6-seed a big deal? Still get a bye. Doesn’t matter who you play in R1 1 through 4, it’s gonna be a tough series.

    Philly is 4 games ahead of Cleveland. Both are good teams but I would posit Philly is the tougher opponent. We’re 2-2 against Philly and 2-1 against Cleveland with one to play. So record wise you could argue it’s a wash but I believe at least one of our wins against Philly they didn’t have Embiid.

    I guess I just think Philly is the tougher team. More playoff experience. They have the best overall player out of the 3 teams with Embiid and Harden is a hall of famer. Cleveland is tough and young and has Donovan but this will be their first playoff series. Philly is here every year.

    As my late father sold Willis a few cars, I was lucky enough to get to know him in the late ’60s. Besides being the bedrock of those Knicks’ teams, he was just a great guy. Years after he retired, I ran into him. He recognized me and asked about my father. RIP Captain.

    Unfortunately I wasn’t alive during the championship years but I know how much Willis Reed meant to the city and the fans. Sad to hear about his passing.

    Doesn’t really matter if the Knicks play the Cavs or Sixers; doesn’t really matter if the Rangers play the Devils or Hurricanes. Pretty dead time in the schedules; if this was NBA or NHL 2K23, I’d autoplay all the remaining games and just start up the playoffs.

    I’d assume at least a black band on the uniform, if not a “19” patch, for Willis’s passing, but Dolan’s such a tool, who knows?

    Loved him. What a dude. In my neighborhood, the big boys would pretend to be Willis and us little guys would be Clyde.

    RIP Willis. As a youngster in ā€˜72, I didnā€™t want the Knicks to win the finals because he couldnā€™t play. Foolish in the hindsight of me as an adult, but why I root for this team 50 years later was because of Willis.

    Not here to compare them as players or their Knicks legacies but for fans of my age the equivalent of Willis Reed is obviously Patrick Ewing. Ewing was always very complimentary to the legendary Knicks champions as was Reed towards Ewing.
