Call me crazy, but I still think the “big in-season trade” should be Obi and Cam for Mook. We may have to add a Jeffries or Svi to make the numbers work, but I see it working for both sides. The Clips get to add inject youth and scoring into their lineups and still be all in. Plus they will still have Covington and Batum to fill in at multiple spots as glue guys who can shoot some and play some defense. While they need a backup C more than Obi, I can’t see adding Hartenstein to that deal without getting Moses Brown and a pick back. On the Knicks side- apart from the obvious that Mook is a combo forward who brings toughness and scoring- he’s a guy that Thibs can trust. Why is that important? Because then he can afford to give Randle and RJ a breather and ensure they have their legs in the 4th. Also..if Thibs continues to give Quickley extended minutes, he can give Brunson a real breather in games too. Maybe we will need to add Hartenstein as a sweetener in the end, but we still have The Simsulation, so that’s perfectly fine. If we can pull something like that off, it will be a shrewd and impressive move IMO

You mean call you crazy for saying a championship contender (or at least they think they are) would trade the player 2nd on the team in minutes played? Nah, why would we do that? 😀

I think Obi will stay, and Hart too. Leon likes continuity and i’d say he’ll get 2 guys, tops. DRose is cooked and Deuce can be a liability in the playoffs, so i expect we’ll get another guard to pair with Quick on the backup team. And then i expect Leon to send away Fournier and Cam in exchange for a backup SF.

Perfect fit, can play both the 3 and the 4, great contract (4 more years at 28 mil combined).

I’m not sure we should do anything at the trade deadline other than maybe moving Cam and Fournier. Since neither is happy with the current situation we might as well try to recoup something for Cam and give Fournier his get out of jail free card for being a good pro.

At the level Brunson is playing, this team is “an efficient RJ” away from playing at close to a 50 win team pace going forward. If he could be more efficient from a combination of better restraint and shot selection and some improvement in his shooting this is a very good team.

To be clear, neither Brunson or Randle is a true #1 option.

Brunson is small and struggles a bit with the much longer defenders. He can be shut down against some matchups.

Randle suffers from a combination of too many low basketball IQ decisions, inconsistent 3 point shooting, and not being able to handle end of game pressure.

However, on most nights this team would be too good for a lot of teams if RJ would just starting playing like a solid efficient scoring option.

Unless a #1 is available (and I don’t see anything before summer), imo they should just punt this trade deadline, keep developing RJ, Deuce, Quick, Obi, Sims, Grimes, Hart, and Mitch and see what happens in the summer.

    I approve this message. 😉

Clapping back — how in the world does someone shoot 43% from three and 46% from the free-throw line?

The season is going well so I don’t want to be a Dolan Downer, but how Knicksy is it that of all players realistically available, there is perhaps no better fit for us than Alec Burks?

Kenrich Williams would be a great pickup for us, but what could we offer them that they would accept? I think they have more picks than they can use already.

I really don’t see any deals for us until the summer. Cam’s a rfa this summer, so why give us anything when you can just wait a few months and sign him for free? Rose has fallen off a cliff this year, so I don’t think he is in demand at all. If Evian was playing well, we would keep him. He’s not, so who would be interested in this version of him at $18 million plus? Would we use draft picks on a player that Thibs may not even play? I hope not.

The best thing for the team would be for Thibs to keep looking for the best combinations of people to bring in off the bench. I’d even like to get a look at Svi.

Athletic beat writer Eric Korean is proposing potential OG trades, and Fred Katz offers his take on the hypothetical Knicks deal:

To Knicks: Anunoby, Khem Birch (two years, $13.65 million)
To Raptors: Obi Toppin (two years, $12.19 million, RFA in 2024), Evan Fournier (two years, $36.85 million, plus team option for 2024-25), better of Knicks or Mavericks 2023 first-round picks, 2024 Pistons second-round, 2025 Knicks first-round pick

The Knicks’ view: I’m intrigued, though I imagine the Knicks would grapple about that 2025 pick. This team still plans on star hunting, and if there’s one lesson to be learned from the Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and Dejounte Murray trades from this past summer, it’s that they’ll need unprotected picks to get one done. That said, such is the price of going after an excellent, two-way wing, and I could see Anunoby fitting in wonderfully to this roster. I think there could be something here. My greatest wonder is whether Toronto would do this right now, considering I think they could acquire similar value in the summer. — Fred Katz

@Raven: Kenrich only has 0.8 FTA per game, i don’t think that % makes a difference. Now 3P% at .437 on 2.1 attempts, and 2P% at .619 on 3.7 attempts, in 21.5 mins per game, seem good to me.

something worth keeping an eye on is Randle’s play of late… he’s down to about 40% assisted fg’s on 2’s and 80% on 3s… these were much higher before and more in line with what he has been with the knicks than anything before…

part of that came lately while RJ was out so some of it can be forgiveable without someone taking up usage in some of these high octane games… but this trend was starting a bit before that… he started the first month being very careful on the 3s he took and in general about his shot selection but that he’s sort of back to what he’s been during the last couple of years…

thankfully he’s still doing ok in 2pt territory and thanks to some hot shooting from 3 he’s in not terrible territory on 3s… but the last coupe of weeks is a portent when you have unbridled and irrationally confident randle… it’s very possible we see some regression from randle soon if this continues… hopefully bad randle doesn’t rear it’s ugly head and thankfully we have brunson to keep some of randle’s worst tendencies at bay…

I’m really scared thinking about giving “Starting Point Guard” Alec Burks to Thibs again…

Whose minutes will he play? Grimes? IQ? Deuce?

If we’re talking “revival”, why not sign The Plague as the backup PG then? Our coach would be very happy… 😀

the jae crowder situation is strange. he’s doing a real joan of arc things about…coming off the bench? not getting extended? how are they happy to pay him while desperately needing players under those circumstances? did they ask him to be the mascot or something?

hard to do better than fred katz as your beat writer if you’re a basketball fanatic

From Katz: The Knicks are “owning the league’s fourth-lowest turnover rate in the league.”

This is the perfect example of why the eye test is not trustworthy. Perhaps it’s because the turnovers that do happen are so gobsmackingly dumb and unforced and just glaringly embarrassing (spinning into triple teams, throwing it directly to the other team), but it sure feels that between Julius and RJ, we would lead the league in that statistic. But no…

It took this team, and this board forever to get rid of all the mercs and have a young team with a healthy cap situation and extra picks playing over .500. Why would people want players like Burks or Gordon is a great mystery.

Totally agree with darules. Plus the one thing we have an embarrassment of riches in (okay, riches might be a push) is in guards, or small wings, or whatever positionless category you may want to lump IQ, Barrett, Grimes, Brunson, even Deuce. If we’re trading for something we need it should be for a long wing (sorry Cam) or a stretch 4 if we dump Obi (which I disapprove of).

Visiting some friends in our nation’s capitol this weekend so seeing the Knicks at a heavily discounted price tonight. Hope our old friend (who has been sounding some regretful notes lately: https://www.nba.com/news/qa-kristaps-porzingis-wizards-2023) suits up.

“something worth keeping an eye on is Randle’s play of late… he’s down to about 40% assisted fg’s on 2’s and 80% on 3s… ”

Noticed this too. I think it’s been mostly forgivable especially given that some of this was accumulated without Brunson as well, but it’s definitely something to watch. I’ve enjoyed being the board’s most unlikely Randle booster this season, hope I can keep it up in good faith.

The really frustrating thing to me is that Fournier & Rose could be great for the 2nd unit if they showed any signs of life.

Kenricg Williams looks like a potentially good get. My main concern would be his rebounding if he plays the 4. Hartenstein & him would be a concerning DRebing pair
