Nuthin’ to say, so I’ll just paste Seth Partnow’s short discussion of our man RJ in today’s Athletic:

Before the season, Fred Katz discussed RJ Barrett’s own recognition of the importance of foul drawing, and indeed the fourth-year Knicks wing strong second half to last season was built in part upon a renewed emphasis on it. Nine of his 16 career games with 10 or more free throw attempts came in the second half of last season, a mark he has not achieved yet this season as his FTA/100 has dipped from a strong 8.4/100 to a near career-low 5.8/100.

Without that larger helping of points from the line, even career-bests in terms of rim finishing and free throw percentage haven’t been able to overcome his slow start to the season from a jump-shooting perspective. According to NBA.com tracking data, Barrett is 21-for-72 (29.2 percent) on attempts outside of 10 feet on the year. So even as the addition of Brunson has enabled a healthier shot diet — a sizable chunk of Barrett’s attempts have moved from midrange areas closer to the basket boosting his accuracy on 2-pointers a career-high-by-some-distance 50.5 percent — Barrett has not made much headway toward becoming an above-average efficiency scorer.

Did y’all see that one stat?:

After 10 games we are 5-5.
    Points: 1,120
    Points allowed: 1,120

    The definition of mediocrity.

The following is a quote from the post article linked above. There is such a big gap between the teams we beat and the teams we lost to it’s hard to tell where we stand relative to other teams in the middle.

Interestingly, the Knicks’ 5-5 record has been split evenly thus far with a 5-0 record against teams presently under .500 and 0-5 against teams above the break-even mark. They have lost to the top four teams in the East — Milwaukee, Cleveland, Boston and Atlanta — as well as Memphis, with a combined record among that quintet of 38-13 for a .745 winning percentage. The five teams the Knicks have defeated — Detroit, Orlando, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Minnesota — have a composite record of 18-37 (.327).

I hope just mentioning this doesn’t jinx us against the Nets.

Haha. Mediocre from every angle. But the season is long ….

While there are bragging rights on the line, I don’t expect to learn all that much from a W or L per se because the Knicks are still sort of in flux and trying things out. We could lose because Durant goes for 50 and Randle goes 0-12 from 3. We could win because the Nets are still a hot mess and someone on our team goes off. What I do expect to learn is something about Thibs’ decision-making, i.e whether he is going to continue to dabble with small-ball and bringing bench guys in sooner.

What I will say is that the team seems to be in a good headspace right now. Barring an explosion by a Net or two, we SHOULD win and I like our chances better than I have in a while.

More generally, I think we continue to benefit from some quirky things with other teams early on. We caught PHI and MIN at a good time. Same goes for tonight. Eventually those teams will stabilize and will be harder to beat.

The good news is that we still have some bullets in the chamber. Things that have a good chance to improve:

    -IQ’s shooting
-Chemistry with Randle-Obi small ball unit
    -Grimes’ foot
-Fournier’s comfort in a diminished role
    -Rose’s efficiency
    -defensive rebounding
    -FTr

I don’t see anything particularly outlier-ish on the positive side. Randle and RJ, while inconsistent, seem to be in a relatively sustainable place overall. Hart, Sims and Obi/Randle combo are mitigating loss of Mitch. Who knows what impact Grimes will have if he ever gets healthy, since IQ seems to be the main beneficiary of his absence and is giving us good defense.

RJ had a horrific opening night game both in shooting and decision making but has mostly been fine since then. He still forces shots and makes bad decisions going to the basket, but imo he’s heading in the right direction.

In the pre season he mentioned Jimmy Butler as the long term model for his game. That’s probably a pretty good model. Butler does a good job of being efficient without being a top 3 point shooter and is a plus defender. If RJ is improving his shot profile from inside the arc, that’s great news. That means it’s working (albeit in a frustrating way at times).

He obviously still has a lot of work to do both in skills and decision making, but as long as he’s moving forward he’ll ultimately be fine. He’s probably 4-5 years away from his peak. You have to be patient and understand he’s not going to explode forward. He’s not that kind of talent. He’s going to add a little something each year and eventually the overall package will be very good.

If there was ever a time to breakout the old testament lineup its tonight

    Immanuel
    Quentin
    Obi
    Isaiah
    Jericho

EB, been a huge fan of the Old Testament angle for the team for a while now. I’d like to think that’s how they’re making roster decisions…

And fascinating roster continuity info. Interesting that for most teams, it’s an upward trend this year. No idea what that really means, but thanks for messing with my brain.

Haha. Mediocre from every angle. But the season is long ….

Exactly. In 2020-21 we were 25-27 at April 7, and only then we went on to win 16 of the last 20 games.

In 2021-22 we were 22-22 at Jan 17 and only then we went on to lose 16 of the next 19 games…

Old Testament lineup is amazing. Get that trending. Although was there a Quentin in the Bible? There was a Quintus I think. And there is a Saint Quentin.

We can splice and dice, dissect and, uh, reinspect, but the more you look at the numbers the more these guys look like exactly what they were. Obi and RJ in particular are a combined .005 off their WS/48 numbers from last year.

Gotta use his whole first name to make it really work — Obadiah…

strat, I agree that Jimmy Butler is who RJ should try to emulate. Butler is a bit taller but their wingspans are similar and both are stronger than most guys their size. Butler might be more fast-twitch, RJ probably shoots better from 3, but there’s plenty of overlap.

Here’s a comparison of their 3rd NBA seasons (caveat: Jimmy was 24, RJ was 21)

    https://stathead.com/tiny/i5R1g

Butler’s TS% was only slightly higher than RJ’s and at a much lower usage, largely due to better FT%. Barrett had more REBs and ASTs a nd fewer TOVs, while Jimmy had more steals and blocks per 36. But overall, very similar.

And here’s a look at this season so far compared to Butler’s 4th season:

    https://stathead.com/tiny/aK632

Butler made the leap at age 25 from really good player to superstar. His USG%, TS%, and 3pt% all made major leaps, while all of his other stats held steady.

I don’t think RJ will ever be the defensive menace that Butler (5 all-defensive 2nd teams), nor do I see him becoming the offensive cold-blooded assassin that Paul Pierce became, but there is probably some hybrid of those 2 that will become RJ’s niche. In other words, I think we should be past the point of worrying about whether he will justify his far-less-than-max contract.

A 500 mediocre team that can make the playoffs, has a ton of first round picks, a ton of young players and no super bad contracts is an amazing position for The Knicks to be in.

In 2021-22 we were 22-22 at Jan 17 and only then we went on to lose 16 of the next 19 games…

Yeah, that can happen too. Right now, we have some positives and some negatives, as probably every .500 team has. At least we’re giving chances to all players that we need to evaluate, and we have to keep doing it until we know what we have. Then the trade deadline will come and we can make one or two adjustments to the team. Until a star becomes available, i think the plan is like this. It’s a long season and a lot can (will?) happen.

“We can splice and dice, dissect and, uh, reinspect, but the more you look at the numbers the more these guys look like exactly what they were. Obi and RJ in particular are a combined .005 off their WS/48 numbers from last year.”

There are things within the numbers that are substantially different, and in developing 22yo’s and 3rd year players, trends in those things are probably meaningful, especially given that Brunson is now running the offense.

In four November games, RJ has a TS% of .597, a 3pt% of .385, and a FT% of .842. For the season, he’s shooting over 50% from 2. He seems to be shooting the 3 with more confidence after a 4-28 start. There is room for some settling of those numbers that would get his advanced stats to show significant improvement from last year.

As to Obi, his BPM jumped from 2.0 to 4.2, which is a significant jump. He’s at a meaningfully higher usage, is hitting 3’s at a 42% on 9 attempts per 36.

Butler was an electric athlete when he came up. And he was a very good player when you include his defense for the three years before his breakout. A much better player than RJ has been.

If RJ is ever a .200 ws/48 guy that would be amazing but I can’t think of too many guys rocking a .45 in their fourth year who have gotten there. And Jimmy B is there right now.

Z-Man – I agree, especially on Obi. But from a 30,000 foot level, there is less change than you might expect. And RJ has had plenty of good runs already.

Just to keep the ball rolling on the potential KB meetup:

    Thanksgiving games:

    – Mon, Nov 21 @ OKC
    – Fri, Nov 25 vs POR
‐ Sun, Nov 27 vs MEM

Any of those days work for people? Probably not the ideal days.

    Christmas/Hanukkah games:

    – Tue 12/20 vs GS
    – Wed 12/21 vs TOR
    – Fri 12/23 vs CHI
    – Tue 12/27 @ DAL
    – Thu 12/29 @ SA

I’d think the Xmas schedule is likely to work better. I could also post a Calendly poll or whatever people use now.

Thanks to Unbearable Knicksiness for the suggestion!

Jimmy Butler was RJ’s current age when he came up. There’s lots of time for RJ to close the gap at least somewhat.

That said, the point isn’t that RJ is going to become the next Jimmy Butler. It is that he should model his game after Jimmy’s. Butler is a no-doubt HOFer. Even 70% of Jimmy Butler is still a really good player.

In other words, I’m suggesting that RJ’s contract is analogous to Brunson’s and that level of play, while far from max-level, is more than enough to justify the contract extension he just signed. Brunson is not ever going to be Curry, or CP3, or Lillard or Trae, or Parker, but he can model his game after one or more of them. He’s a valuable player at $25-30M AAV, and RJ can be too if he improves reasonably in certain areas.

It is really interesting that RJ’s numbers are more or less the same, which is a bad thing, but he’s getting them in pretty different ways.

We’ve discussed his improved numbers at the rim, but on the flip side his FTr has cratered. Annoying timing considering he’s finally hitting free throws at a good rate.

Guess the question is whether these two things are connected–is he trading some foul drawing for accuracy for some reason? Requires a much better scout’s eye than my own to answer.

If you assume he’ll start getting more calls, I agree with Z-Man that he’s giving us some early assurance his contract won’t be hindrance. I suppose I’m less positive that’s a 100% safe assumption.

Regarding RJ not getting foul calls, there’s definitely been a crackdown on players doing bullshit stuff to draw fouls (see Trae, Harden, etc.) and RJ unfortunately is a bit of a victim of that trend. He tends to throw his body at the defender while putting up low % shots, and I think referees don’t want to reward that.

Having said all that, I still don’t think he gets much respect from the refs and should be getting to the line more.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the scouting report on RJ is to NOT foul him, just let him miss or goad him into a TO, and he is trying to adjust to that.

I’m glad that hunting fouls is not being rewarded. The take foul rule is paying off, as has the sweep rule.

OTOH, the continuation rule seems inconsistently applied, but anything that stops Hardenesque flailing and flopping, I can live with.

Jalen has been amazing. I have a lot of confidence in that contract right now. He has been, by far, our best player, and at a very reasonable price. I honestly don’t know why people aren’t more excited about him.

I would love to see a good paper on how much age matters vs NBA experience. How do the growth curves differ for guys who spend 2-3 years in college?

I don’t believe RJ has any projection left physically. And he has played a crapload of NBA minutes. I don’t see why a light switch will go on after 6000 minutes. But it could happen and I hope it will.

On a separate note, TNFH, I know someone who lives in that building that caught fire in Midtown over the weekend and I will just say let’s hope for the sake of tenants rights that the NY Post doesn’t dig too deep.

Do you have any advice for a renter displaced by a fire caused by landlord negligence? Do people have any rights that are relevant in that kind of situation?

All legal advice will get you at least one beer at the meetup. And I would vote for something in January. Holidays don’t work that well on my end.

I was thinking of going to the Grizz game, we could meet at that time, or at a bar for the Portland game. When I’m in town my schedule is fairly flexible though, so I can really do any date, so long as I’m around. For Christmastime I won’t be around come January, so for me it would have to be before the 28th or so, unless we wanted to do multiple KB meetups (which would be great!)

Also, I’m going to the Knicks Sixers game on Christmas 🙂

I’m more worried about RJ’s defense, this season he’s been kind of bad on that side. We need a defensive stopper for this team to make some sense. Will Grimes be healthy? And can he do it? I’d like to know the answers to these questions.

“I would love to see a good paper on how much age matters vs NBA experience. How do the growth curves differ for guys who spend 2-3 years in college?

I don’t see anyway to eliminate major bias from such a study. How can you possibly tell how RJ would have fared if he had stayed in college for 3-4 years, or how Jimmy Butler would have done in the NBA at age 19? Or Brunson, for that matter.

Even if there was a way to control for specific player types, the nature of both the way the NBA game is played and of the draft pool itself has changed so dramatically over the past decade or so. Offenses and defenses are so geared towards positionless basketball and three point shooting that it may take longer to acclimate and find a niche.

I think that strat’s points about RJ are very reasonable. Because he possesses neither elite athleticism or skills, his improvement path would be more incremental than involving a big leap.

I agree that he isn’t likely to get much bigger, stronger, faster, etc. But can he improve his handle? 3pt shooting? FT shooting? Finishing? Decision-making? Defensive technique? Will having better players like Brunson around him help?

Personally, I am not sure what his ceiling is, but I am no longer concerned about his floor.

Owen, sorry to hear that. With the obligatory “this is not legal advice” caveat, my impression is renters absolutely have rights in that situation. Landlords have a duty to keep their premises habitable and safe, so if there’s evidence their negligence led to a fire, well, that’s pretty clear evidence they did not do that.

The remedy here would be a suit for damages, which is not my area of expertise (these occur outside of housing court) but the claim is pretty straightforward: your friend is entitled to recover any losses resulting from the fire, plus the possibility of punitive damages.

Side note: renter’s insurance is relatively cheap and well worth it whether you live in a slumlord’s hovel or a new “luxury” cube.

I just turned on ESPN. I listened for about 2 minutes. Then Stephen A. Smith talked.

    I muted the game.
