2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Sixers – Quentin Grimes Is Starting, People! This is Not a Drill!

The Knicks head to Philadelphia to take on the Sixers, a game after Philly discovered that James Harden will be out for a month with a tendon injury in his foot. Joel Embiid is also OUT tonight.

The Sixers’ lineup will be:

Tyrese Maxey
De’Anthony Melton
Montrezl Harrell
Tobias Harris
PJ Tucker

Expect Maxey to shoot the ball about 100 times.

If the Knicks can’t beat this lineup then, well, I dunno, man.

Let’s go, Knicks!

They can’t lose this game and Thibs can’t lose this game, the basketball gods are still protecting him…

Let’s Go Knicks!

Maxey is a poor man’s IQ!! Let’s go Knicks.

Oh and —

Which sucks for me, because it’s my best promotional platform

Dunno, Alan. I bought your book because of a little site called knickerblogger.net 😉

I have the feeling we don’t do well on friday night Knicks, but maybe it’s only because the last two decades we lost a lot no matter what day of the week. 😀

I read somewhere Thibs said Grimes is in the best shape of anyone on the team. Doesn’t pass the eye-test, but … sure?

If both teams combined only score one point per minute, we can win this thing.

Grimes right away making an impact.

Randle is back at throwing long 2s !? Of course if it goes in, it’s a good shot, but i’m pretty sure it won’t go in at a good rate.

Brian, whatever you’re watching seems about 30 seconds ahead of the NBA League Pass I’m watching…

My roommate who doesn’t follow basketball just said “both these teams suck,” which is funny because it’s true, but one of them is missing two MVP caliber players and the other is unusually healthy

Funny, the unofficial play-by-play didn’t give Randle a TO but an offensive board to Tucker… home cooking in Philly 🙂

If Randle gets to double digits i’m certain he’ll have a double-double, because TOs will be high for sure.

Randle getting the naughty-bits whack while spinning pointlessly foul out of the way early…

Barrett getting the dumbest-made-layup-against-multiple-defenders shot out of the way early…

So almost the entire bench mob is in there, Randle is playing one of his worst quarters so far (which is saying something), and where’s Obi?

Obi missed a dunk last game. Might mean the Thibs-doghouse. I was hoping no, but …

I think we should bench Brunson just so his plus/minus doesn’t get tanked by the two players we’ve all collectively agreed to call “the starting lineup” to be polite

1st quarter has yet to end and Randle already has 4 turnovers (plus the one not counted after the DReb)…

Imagine how long Obi would be benched if he pulled down an offensive rebound, stubbornly refused to pass out of a double team, dribbled into the lane, ignored an open Hart and traveled while attempting to put up a contested fadeaway

I know a lot of people are really pushing for Obi to play, but he’s not better than Randle. Maybe, if he is consistent with his 3pt shot and learns to handle the ball, he’ll deserve to be a starter.

GoNY, Obi is hitting 45.8% of his three-pointers so far. Small sample size of course, but what more do you want???

“Imagine how long Obi would be benched if he pulled down an offensive rebound, stubbornly refused to pass out of a double team, dribbled into the lane, ignored an open Hart and traveled while attempting to put up a contested fadeaway”

LOL.

Obi with his first dunk in .05 seconds of play. And I think (I think) I just saw him box out on the defensive glass.

I think we should bench Brunson just so his plus/minus doesn’t get tanked by the two players we’ve all collectively agreed to call “the starting lineup” to be polite

I was legit just thinking that with regards to some of these Hart moves! He should be begging Thibs not to start him!

Also, just a guess, but I’m thinking Obi won’t have 4 (5) turnovers in the second the way Randle did in the first…

But well, Randle deserves more playing time because…

I had some hope for Randle the first few games, thinking Brunson was taking some of the load off of him, but he’s totally reverted to 2021-2022 Julius.

It’s really disheartening and depressing

Why would any Sixer player shoot at this point? Shouldn’t they all just go to the basket? They can’t shoot!

How is that a foul on Niang?! Obi didn’t have the ball! How is that a foul?!

They’re not Breen and Clyde, but the Sixer announcers aren’t bad. Painless to listen to.

The homers from the Philly stream… yuck! Playing this bad is awful, having to listen to these guys is the cherry on top!

“This homers from the Philly stream”

I’m confused by the complaints. Don’t you have a drop down menu in League Pass to choose Knicks stream?

“Do we have more turnovers than field goals?”

13 TO — 9FG

And amazingly we’re tied.

If we can’t beat this seriously depleted team, I don’t need 20 games to make a judgment…

We are, in fact, just as good as the very depleted Sixers.

Although just to spite GoNY, I’d say we’d be well ahead if Obi had more than 5 minutes in the first half…

I also have the Philly stream tonight, and while I miss Clyde I can at least rest assured knowing that if Fetterman can’t pull it out it won’t be because he didn’t run enough TV ads

Since I live in Florida I rely on League Pass. It took me a while to find the menu choice to switch feeds.

I genuinely love that Thibs is playing everyone and in new combinations.

Is it too much to want Svi on the floor. He’s shooting 100% from the field 100% from three 😉

Clashfan, the first quarter was a combination of certain Knicks (ahem) doing the incredibly stupid things they are known for, and incredibly quick hands from the Sixers stealing and stripping everything.

OMG, while I was typing that, Randle perhaps had the worst turnover of the game so far, which is REALLY saying something.

AND a tech. Way to help your team win, Julius.

The away stream wasn’t working, but now it is. With Clyde this will be a much better game. 🙂

That wasn’t even a good flop by Reddish. Harris just outright hit the dude.

You know how you sometimes say about a player, “He’s unconscious out there.” That seems like how Maxey just lives his life.

They’re just not turning it over every time down the floor.

I love Jalen’s scoop shot.

No one should ever ask Tobias Harris to make a decision in a game.

“I’m guessing Grimes didn’t look good out there?”

He was fine, but Reddish has been … good?

EDIT: Cam is 2/2, 1/1 from three, 2/2 FT, 2Ast, steal, block, 1 deer in headlights near turnover in the key

Reddish has been active. I think it’s more that the Sixers have been playing poorly, but he’s been fine, as well. Like that awful Tobias Harris pass he picked off wasn’t because of him, but more because Harris was dumb.

It’s pretty clear that Fournier should be the odd man out of the 10 man rotation.

The inbound to finish the half was… stupid? Fortunately, Randle was able to get the ball.

I think RJ and Cam playing fairly well on the same night is one of the 7 signs of the Apocalypse.

I wonder if Grimes is having some discomfort in his foot again. I can see Thibs not wanting to play him a lot of consecutive minutes but not coming back isn’t such a good sign. I guess we’ll see who starts the 2nd half.

Brunson and RJ with a solid half, honestly the Sixers are even worse than I thought, let’s hope we can open a nice lead so we can rest our best players for tomorrow’s Celtics game…

Mitch’s out.

Still enjoying the Sixers channel, the music has been fun (Jill Scott is one of my faves).

“Hartenstein has hit two 3pt field goals this season,” is not what I was hoping to hear in game 8

How many good games has DRose had this season?

He had a couple, but in general not a great season so far…

The Sixers think it’s great they got Tyrese Maxey with a late first round pick, little do they know they could’ve gotten a future worse pick instead.

Rose hasn’t been playing a lot of minutes. He’s a 10-12 minutes player so far, but he’s had 3-4 good games.

We’re up 2 shooting 52% against 38%…

Nike just announced the end of its business relation with Kyrie…

Good RJ game at least, though it’s been a little hard for me to tell if the process is actually better. Feels like some prayers at the rim have gone in.

“Great pass RJ to Hart!”

Yeah, saw that. Eye test says there have been many more of those this year than last. Maybe because more cutting, but maybe because RJ genuinely wants to pass well.

EDIT: RJ’s assists are actually down this year from career avg, so what do I know.

Seems like we are similar in quality to the Sixers without Embiid and Harden. Not good.

The fact that we’ve had one winning season in the last nine and still don’t have a single young player as good as Tyrese Maxey is pretty disheartening

PJ Tucker is making a case for the worst rotation player in the NBA right now. Jesus christ he looks as bad as his stats look.

The fact that we’ve had one winning season in the last nine and still don’t have a single young player as good as Tyrese Maxey is pretty disheartening

The Knicks wanted him, not Quick. But we had the 23rd pick, i think, and he went 21st. Maybe we should’ve picked Maxey at 8th instead of Obi.

Bad choice, but RJ gets no respect from the refs.

No respect, not at all, it’s annoying.

I predicted 41 wins for these guys? That’s gonna age worse than my pro-Allonzo Trier opinions.

Maybe we should’ve picked Maxey at 8th instead of Obi

I’d like to remind you that Haliburton was there and like 80% of this board wanted him

p.s. I miss the “quote” button and “night mode” — these things are severely harming the KB experience sry not sry

Quickly is not a PG. Can we please get past that particular delusion? He’s a 6th man that should primarily be playing off the ball.

Knicks just can’t shoot. It seems they really miss the assistant coach what’s his name who went to coach college ball.

Edit, I looked it up. It was Kenny Payne

I’d like to remind you that Haliburton was there and like 80% of this board wanted him

Yeah, i know. But i don’t know if they liked Hali, and Maxey they liked. It was the Kentucky connection people talked about. It would’ve been better to miss Hali for Maxey than for Obi, i think.

“I know it’s too soon but Grimes has been completely useless on the court.”

It’s probably going take about 10 games.

Well, I tuned in finally. Looks like Fournier doesn’t work on the second unit either.

Second half Obi is always worse than first half Obi, I wonder why…

Maybe he’s pissed because he’s always benched too early?

Still don’t think giving half-decent shooters some space in order to pack the paint is a tenable defensive scheme in 2022

“Well, I tuned in finally. Looks like Fournier doesn’t work on the second unit either.”

Fournier is basically sulking in a t-shirt that says, “This is better? I’m fourth into the game? Good luck with that.”

yea, i mean watching this game, and others… we look like we cant even remotely compete… we are just another one of the bottom feeders… really really disappointing… how can we feel this way less than 10 games in… there isnt even any offense getting orchestrated by Brunson… its just bad all around…

We should have known after we barely survived that Hornets game…

Until we start hitting some shots, its gonna be ugly

We’re so fucking careless with the ball. A simple inbounds play and we almost commit a backcourt violation

“yea, i mean watching this game, and others… we look like we cant even remotely compete… we are just another one of the bottom feeders… really really disappointing… how can we feel this way less than 10 games in…”

That’s exactly what happened last year within the first ten games.

Obi-Randle on the court together is great, but we need to get Randle off the court.

That three is the first time in Obi’s career I recall thinking he took an absolutely terrible shot. Definitely not much of an impact from him tonight. Or anyone else for that matter.

The Sixers’ bench is so bad I think that the Knicks can still pull this off!

My buddy in Philly loves Reed. He seems pretty good. 6 steals does anyway.

I expected Maxey to have 45 by now. And for us to have been run over by the Meltwagon. I guess Tobias still has a little juice left.

Which poster is most likely to have a giant Knicks tattoo on his pectoral? We need that poll.

Why is Thibs allowing them to take so many bad 3s?! There’s not discipline with shot selection.

I guess you guys were right after all, the process was useless… because it seems like the Sixers can beat us without Embiid too.

This has been just dreadful to watch.

“Jeez..quick and obi with some fucked up shot selection…”

Trying to get Thibs fired 😉

Isn’t Brunson supposed to be our floor general…he’s not doing jack shit out there…

Isn’t this the part where Jalen calms everyone down, hits two clutch buckets, and we start running an actual offense to close out the game?

That thud was me jumping off the obi bandwagon

Julius 31 minutes, 13 points, 6 turnovers.
Obi, 16 minutes, 11 points, 3 turnovers.

Sometimes I’m not sure what Reddish is doing on defense, but he’s very active. He’s clearly getting better on both sides, albeit with a long way to go to be a meaningful player.

ok so let reddish go the rack every play…. probably not a sixer than can play him one on one…

ThisChicanery I was just about to post that with the recommendation that we commit to letting Randle cook, make Cam Reddish the starting point guard, and start Trevor Keels at center

if they keep the energy up on defense, ill be happy

ok happy is a strong word… content

If I get off the Obi bandwagon it may be because I want to spend some time on the Reddishwagon

I know we are playing small right now, but the defensive rebounding is going kill me.

@Noble

Dude looks special, like a generational talent. Plus, this draft is supposed to be pretty deep with high-end talent.

Weak Obi game overall tonight, but I am starting to be reasonably confident when he shoots a three. Take that for data.

im not a tobias fan at all, but tonight he is basically everything we want randle or RJ to be

as mr cronin said, how many long jump shots do you have to take and miss… go sixers, keep missing

I love Clyde talking about how Thibs won’t play Obi and Randle together. But not like Wally would. More of a implied about time to try something

“ This Sixers team might be as dumb as the Knicks.”

It’s a good debate. 😂😂😂

as mr cronin said, how many long jump shots do you have to take and miss… go sixers, keep missing

It’s amazing. The Sixers’ decision-making has been the Knicks’ sixth man tonight.

I’m almost glad he hit that second free throw because if he missed the 76ers probably would have gotten the offensive rebound and converted a 3.

“Obiiii. Trade Randle!”

Maybe we can give Randle away as our penalty for tampering with Brunson.

Desperate times…forced thibs to Desperate measures…see if he learned anything tonight…

Wow, very generous foul call on Thybulle

Brian, I didn’t think that was a foul. But the refs have been calling it pretty tight against us.

Thibs throwing everything at the wall and finally finding something that sticks: Cam and the Obi-Randle smallball lineup…

Desperate times…forced thibs to Desperate measures…see if he learned anything tonight…

Absolutely, but hey, that he mixed things up in desperation is still nice to see.

I’m assuming Doc is going to go for a quick two and then just play defense.

“Desperate times…forced thibs to Desperate measures…see if he learned anything tonight…”

Yeah, in truth all this only happens b/c Mitch’s injury (sadly).

EDIT: RJ, man, WTactualF!?

I can’t believe he took that shot instead of going to the hoop. The Knicks were so lucky there.

Now, see, this is a win I can fully support. Proper lineups, proper modern offense, very little D-Rose.

They’re down two, they can’t buy an outside shot and they don’t just go to the hoop. The Knicks were very lucky there.

I can’t believe how dumb the Sixers are. It’s just astonishing that they seriously planned on Melton taking that shot.

Very smart pass by Brunson to Cam deep to end the game. Even if the Sixers steal the ball they had 1.5 secs to hit a shot fro 3/4 court. Much better than giving it up under the hoop.

This is called “barely surviving” but a win is a win.

And a win against a contender, with the reigning scoring champ and MVP favorite Embiid and the still dangerous Harden is… oh wait

Cam and Obi we’re instrumental, Randle sank 4 clutch FTs, Barrett had his 20s, Thibs mix & matched and survived another day.

Celtics next!

Am I allowed to feel a little bit hopeful about Cam? Or is it meaningless because it was against the B team?

MElton UFO

It’d be like if the Knicks drew up the game-winning shot attempt for Deuce.

Fascinating that Obi Toppin and Julius Randle shared the court against a team without a clear ability to exploit their weaknesses as a pairing and the world didn’t end

I was afraid to post this thought earlier for fear it would jinx the Knicks, but one of the Philadelphia announcers kept talking during the fourth quarter about how the quality of the Knicks shots was so much better than Philadelphia’s shots. We got lots of shots at the time and they kept taking long jumpers. I don’t think of the Knicks offense as one that generates quality shots, but at least they did it for one quarter.

I love that the NBA app has a Knicks studio stream which shows MSG pre and post game shows.

Game balls go to Pepper for getting off the Obi bandwagon at exactly the right moment.

And to BC for not saying anything positive.

We are getting into midseason form

Now the Celtics just have to find a way to lose.

Next, we’ll win against the Celtics because we have the celtic killer (Fournier).

And to BC for not saying anything positive.

I specifically said that the Knicks could make a comeback because the Sixers’ bench was so bad! So I did say something positive and the Knicks still won! So it’s not on me!

How did Rose miss two shots and have 4 turnovers in 7 minutes and still have a +4?

Celtics seem uncompliant. Nets destroyed the Wizards, holy shit. Who needs that bozo.

and 8 blocks for Mobley with Mitchell out, for those wondering who their second best player is. He might be their best player. Guy is a monster on defense.

And wow, Nike dropping the hammer on Kyrie too. Before any player in the NBA.

Minutes -> data. Thibs did well (again). Some by design; some by necessity. This is a long beautiful list.

Randle 37
RJ 37
Brunson 36
Hart 21
IQ 21
Obi 20
Cam 15
Grimes 15
E4 14
Mitch 12 (injury)
Rose 7
Sims 5

kids shot 50% or better
RJ 8/16
Obi 6/10
Cam 4/4 (!)
Hart 4/8
IQ 1/7 being the only poor outlier among the under 25 year olds. Gotta fix that.

More games please.

“Bing mother efing Bong my dudes”

BJ is now contractually obligated to attend all away games in Philadelphia.

“Fascinating that Obi Toppin and Julius Randle shared the court against a team without a clear ability to exploit their weaknesses as a pairing and the world didn’t end”

With Embiid out and no other big man to dominate, it was a good time to try it. But the defensive rebounding has been an issue for the team as is. I think they scored 20 or so points of OREBs tonight. That combo has to be used selectively.
